We describe algorithms for computing various functors for algebraic D-modules, i.e. systems of linear partial differential equations with polynomial coefficients. We will give algorithms for restriction, tensor product, localization, and local cohomology groups for all degrees.
We study restrictions on cohomology algebras of Kaehler compact manifolds, not depending on the h^{p,q} numbers or the symplectic structure. To illustrate the effectiveness of these restrictions, we give a number of examples of compact symplectic manifolds satisfying the Lefschetz property but not having the cohomology algebra of a compact Kaehler manifold. We also prove the stability of these restrictions under products.
For a normal variety X defined over an algebraically closed field with an action of the multiplicative group G_m, we consider the ``hyperbolic localization'' functor from D^b(X) to D^b(X^T), which localizes using closed supports in the directions flowing into the fixed points, and compact supports in the directions flowing out. We show that the hyperbolic localization of the intersection cohomology sheaf is a direct sum of intersection cohomology sheaves.
Given a $D$-module $M$ generated by a single element, and a polynomial $f$, one can construct several $D$-modules attached to $M$ and $f$ and can define the notion of the (generalized) $b$-function following M. Kashiwara. These modules are closely related to the localization and the local cohomology of $M$. We show that the $b$-function, if it exists, controls these modules and present general algorithms for computing these modules and the $b$-function (if it exists) without any further assumptions. For these algorithms, we reformulate the localization algorithm for $D$-modules.
Given a complex analytic function with a one-dimensional critical locus at the origin, we examine the monodromy action on the integral cohomology of the Milnor fiber. We relate this monodromy to that of a generic hyperplane slice through the origin, and to that of a generic hyperplane slice near the origin. We thereby obtain number-theoretic restrictions on the monodromy and on the cohomology of the original Milnor fiber.
We revisit the localization formulas of cohomology intersection numbers associated to a logarithmic connection. The main contribution of this paper is threefold: we prove the localization formula of the cohomology intersection number of logarithmic forms in terms of residue of a connection; we prove that the leading term of the Laurent expansion of the cohomology intersection number is Grothendieck residue when the connection is hypergeometric; and we prove that the leading term of stringy integral discussed by Arkani-Hamed, He and Lam is nothing but the self-cohomology intersection number of …
We prove a localization formula for a "holomorphic equivariant cohomology" attached to the Atiyah algebroid of an equivariant holomorphic vector bundle. This generalizes Feng-Ma, Carrell-Liebermann, Baum-Bott and K. Liu's localization formulas.
We give a brief introduction to the Berline-Vergne localization formula for the finite-dimensional setting and indicate how the Duistermaat-Heckman formula is derived from it. We consider applications of the localization formula when it is specialized to a maximal dimensional co-adjoint orbit. In particular, the case when the co-adjoint orbit is a quotient $G/T$ of a connected Lie group $G$ modulo a maximal torus $T$ is analyzed in detail. We describe also a generalization of the localization formula to non-compact group actions.
For any Bott-Samelson resolution $q_{I}:\hat{X_{I}}\rightarrow G/B$ of the flag variety $G/B$, and any torus equivariant oriented cohomology $h_T$, we compute the restriction formula of certain basis $η_L$ of $h_T(\hat{X_{I}})$ determined by the projective bundle formula. As an application, we show that $h_T(\hat{X_{I}})$ embeds into the equivariant oriented cohomology of $T$-fixed points, and the image can be characterized by using the Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson (GKM) description. Furthermore, we compute the push-forward of the basis $η_L$ onto $h_T(G/B)$, and their restriction formula.
These are detailed notes on a variant of the non-abelian cohomology developed by Minhyong Kim in arXiv:0409456 (published in Invent. Math.) to study rational points of varieties over number fields. The current variant is used in arXiv:1001.5008 to study rational points of the restriction of the universal curve to the generic point of M_{g,n}.
We construct combinatorial bases of the $T$-equivariant ($T$ is the maximal torus) cohomology $H^\bullet_T(Σ,k)$ of the Bott-Samelson variety $Σ$ under some mild restrictions on the field of coefficients $k$. This bases allow us to prove the surjectivity of the restrictions $H^\bullet_T(Σ,k)\to H^\bullet_T(π^{-1}(x),k)$ and $H^\bullet_T(Σ,k)\to H^\bullet_T(Σ\setminusπ^{-1}(x),k)$, where $π:Σ\to G/B$ is the canonical resolution. In fact, we also construct bases of the targets of these restrictions by picking up certain subsets of certain bases of $H^\bullet_T(Σ,k)$ and restricting them to $π^{-…
We say that a complex analytic space, $X$, is an intersection cohomology manifold if and only if the shifted constant sheaf on $X$ is isomorphic to intersection cohomology; this is quickly seen to be equivalent to $X$ being a homology manifold. Given an analytic function $f$ on an intersection cohomology manifold, we describe a simple relation between $V(f)$ being an intersection cohomology manifold and the vanishing cycle Milnor monodromy of $f$. We then describe how the Sebastiani-Thom isomorphism allows us to easily produce intersection cohomology manifolds with arbitrary singular sets. Fin…
Suppose that the critical locus $Σ$ of a complex analytic function $f$ on affine space is, itself, a space with an isolated singular point at the origin $\0$, and that the Milnor number of $f$ restricted to normal slices of $Σ-\{\0\}$ is constant. Then, the general theory of perverse sheaves puts severe restrictions on the cohomology of the Milnor fiber of $f$ at $\0$, and even more surprising restrictions on the cohomology of the Milnor fiber of generic hyperplane slices.
For a complex variety with a torus action we propose a new method of computing Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes. The method does not apply resolution of singularities. It is based on Localization Theorem in equivariant cohomology.
We compute Hochschild cohomology of projective hypersurfaces starting from the Gerstenhaber-Schack complex of the (restricted) structure sheaf. We are particularly interested in the second cohomology group and its relation with deformations. We show that a projective hypersurface is smooth if and only if the classical HKR decomposition holds for this group. In general, the first Hodge component describing scheme deformations has an interesting inner structure corresponding to the various ways in which first order deformations can be realized: deforming local multiplications, deforming restrict…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over a number field $F$, and let $S$ be a set (finite or infinite) of places of $F$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the surjectivity of the localization map from $H^1(F,G)$ to the "direct sum" of the sets $H^1(F_v,G)$ where $v$ runs over $S$. In the appendices, we give a new construction of the abelian Galois cohomology of a reductive group over a field of arbitrary characteristic.
We study the vanishing cycle complex $φ_fA_X$ for a holomorphic function $f$ on a reduced complex analytic space $X$ with $A$ a Dedekind domain (for instance, a localization of the ring of integers of a cyclotomic field, where the monodromy eigenvalue decomposition may hold after a localization of $A$). Assuming the perversity of the shifted constant sheaf $A_X[d_X]$, we show that the lowest possibly-non-zero vanishing cohomology at $0\in X$ can be calculated by the restriction of $φ_fA_X$ to an appropriate nearby curve in the singular locus $Y$ of $f$, which is given by intersecting $Y$ with …
We study the cohomology jump loci of rank one local systems for the plane curve germ complement by the deletion restriction method. In particular, the deletion restriction type results in this case only depend on the linking numbers between the irreducible components of the plane curve germ.
This paper is the first in a series. The main goal of the series is to present a geometric construction of certain remarkable tensor categories arising from quantum groups coresponding to the value of deformation parameter $q$ equal to a root of unity. In the present paper we study perverse sheaves over a complex affine space which are smooth along the stratification determined by a finite arrangement of complex affine hyperplanes defined by real equations. In particular, we construct explicitely (in terms of combinatorial data) complexes computing cohomology of Goresky-MacPherson extensions o…
In D-module theory, we have the notion of the restriction of a module along a smooth variety. T. Oaku and N. Takayama have described a process to compute the restriction, which starts from a free resolution adapted to the V-filtration of Kashiwara-Malgrange. By using the theory of free resolutions adapted to the (order and V)-bifiltration (from T. Oaku , N. Takayama and M. Granger), we endow the restriction with an order filtration and we show that the process of Oaku and Takayama respects the order filtration. In consequence, we compute a minimal presentation of the algebraic local cohomology…
This note is motivated by the problem of understanding Springer's remarkable action of the Weyl group $W=N_G(T)/T$ of a semi-simple complex linear algebraic group $G$, with maximal torus $T$, on the cohomology algebra of an arbitrary Springer variety in the flag variety of $G$ from the viewpoint of torus actions. Continuing the work [CK] which gave a sufficient condition for a group $\mathcal{W}$ acting on the fixed point set of an algebraic torus action $(S,X)$ on a complex projective variety $X$ to lift to a representation of $\mathcal{W}$ on the cohomology algebra $H^*(X)$ (over $\mathbb{C}…
We describe the equivariant cohomology ring of rationally smooth projective embeddings of reductive groups. These embeddings are the projectivizations of reductive monoids. Our main result describes their equivariant cohomology in terms of roots, idempotents, and underlying monoid data. Also, we characterize those embeddings whose equivariant cohomology ring is obtained via restriction to the associated toric variety. Such characterization is given in terms of the closed orbits.
We use localization to describe the restriction map from equivariant Chow cohomology to ordinary Chow cohomology for complete toric varieties in terms of piecewise polynomial functions and Minkowski weights. We compute examples showing that this map is not surjective in general, and that its kernel is not always generated in degree one. We prove a localization formula for mixed volumes of lattice polytopes and, more generally, a Bott residue formula for toric vector bundles.
By a $B$-regular variety, we mean a smooth projective variety over $C$ admitting an algebraic action of the upper triangular Borel subgroup $B \subset SL_2(C)$ such that the unipotent radical in $B$ has a unique fixed point. A result of M. Brion and the first author describes the equivariant cohomology algebra (over $C$) of a $B$-regular variety $X$ as the coordinate ring of a remarkable affine curve in $X \times P^1$. The main result of this paper uses this fact to classify the $B$-invariant subvarieties $Y$ of a $B$-regular variety $X$ for which the restriction map $i_Y:H^*(X) \to H^*(Y)$ is…
We determine the structure of the equivariant cohomology and $K$-theory of Bott towers. By restriction, we obtain similar results for Bott-Samelson varieties. This results allow us to describe more precisely the equivariant cohomology and $K$-theory of the flag variety $X$. We give an expression for the cup product in $H_T^*(X)$.
Using Deodhar's decomposition of a double Schubert cell, we study the regular representations of finite groups of Lie type arising in the cohomology of Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated to tori. We deduce that the Deligne-Lusztig restriction of a Gelfand-Graev module is a shifted Gelfand-Graev module.
We develop a theory of Cech-Bott-Chern cohomology and in this context we naturally come up with the relative Bott-Chern cohomology. In fact Bott-Chern cohomology has two relatives and they all arise from a single complex. Thus we study these three cohomologies in a unified way and obtain a long exact sequence involving the three. We then study the localization problem of characteristic classes in the relative Bott-Chern cohomology. For this we define the cup product and integration in our framework and we discuss local and global duality homomorphisms. After reviewing some materials on connect…
We introduce a new method of calculating intersections on \bar{M}_{g,n}, using localization of equivariant cohomology. As an application, we give a proof of Mirzakhani's recursion relation for calculating intersections of mixed psi and kappa_1 classes.
We prove that the p-adic local Langlands correspondence for GL_2(Q_p) appears in the etale cohomology of the Lubin-Tate tower at infinity. We use global methods using recent results of Emerton on the local-global compatibility and hence our proof applies to local Galois representations which come via a restriction from global pro-modular Galois representations. We also discuss a folklore conjecture which states that the p-adic local Langlands correspondence appears in the de Rham cohomology of the Lubin-Tate tower (Drinfeld tower). We show that a study of the de Rham cohomology for perfectoid …
We construct an algebraic-cycle based model for the motivic cohomology on the category of schemes of finite type over a field, where schemes may admit arbitrary singularities and may be non-reduced. We show that our theory is functorial on the category, that it detects nilpotence, and that its restriction to the subcategory of smooth schemes agrees with the pre-existing motivic cohomology theory, which is the higher Chow theory of S. Bloch (Adv. Math., 1986). A few structures and applications are discussed.
We employ the perverse vanishing cycles to show that each reduced cohomology group of the Milnor fiber, except the top two, can be computed from the restriction of the vanishing cycle complex to only singular strata with a certain lower bound in dimension. Guided by geometric results, we alternately use the nearby and vanishing cycle functors to derive information about the Milnor fiber cohomology via iterated slicing by generic hyperplanes. These lead to the description of the reduced cohomology groups, except the top two, in terms of the vanishing cohomology of the nearby section. We use it …
A generalization of Grothendieck's non-vanishing theorem is proved for a module which is finite over a local homomorphism. It is also proved that the Gorenstein injective dimension of such a module, if finite, is bounded below by its Krull dimension and is equal to the supremum of the depths of the localizations of the ring over primes in the support of the module.
Let $G$ denote a reductive algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$ and $x$ a nilpotent element of its Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. The Springer variety $\mathcal{B}_x$ is the closed subvariety of the flag variety $\mathcal{B}$ of $G$ parameterizing the Borel subalgebras of $\mathfrak{g}$ containing $x$. It has the remarkable property that the Weyl group $W$ of $G$ admits a representation on the cohomology of $\mathcal{B}_x$ even though $W$ rarely acts on $\mathcal{B}_x$ itself. Well-known constructions of this action due to Springer et al use technical machinery from algebraic geometry. The purpose o…
The aim of this paper is to describe how to obtain residue-type formulas for push-forwards in equivariant cohomology, using the Jeffrey-Kirwan nonabelian localization theorem and the related result of Guillemin and Kalkman. This paper relates the description of equivariant push-forwards for homogeneous spaces of classical Lie groups with the action of the maximal torus with symplectic geometry, using the example of projective spaces and classical Grassmannians.
We investigate the action of the Weil group on the compactly supported l-adic etale cohomology groups of rigid spaces over a local field. We prove that the alternating sum of the traces of the action is an integer and is independent of l when either the rigid space is smooth or the characteristic of the base field is equal to 0. We modify the argument of T. Saito to prove a result on l-independence for nearby cycle cohomology, which leads to our l-independence result for smooth rigid spaces. In the general case, we use the finiteness theorem of R. Huber, which requires the restriction on the c…
We give a natural filtration F on quantum cohomology QH(G/B) of G/B, which respects the quantum product structure. Its associated graded algebra is isomorphic to the tensor product of QH(G/P) and a corresponding graded algebra of QH(P/B) after localization. When the quantum parameter goes to zero, this specializes to the filtration on the classical cohomology H(G/B) from the Leray spectral sequence associated to the fibration P/B --> G/B --> G/P.
In this paper, we develop a new necessary and sufficient condition for the vanishing of 4-Massey products of elements in the mod-2 Galois cohomology of a field. This new description allows us to define a splitting variety for 4-Massey products, which is shown in the Appendix to satisfy a local-to-global principle over number fields. As a consequence, we prove that, for a number field, all such 4-Massey products vanish whenever they are defined. This provides new explicit restrictions on the structure of absolute Galois groups of number fields.
We investigate the action of the Weil group on the compactly supported l-adic cohomology groups of rigid spaces over local fields. We prove that every eigenvalue of the action is a Weil number when either a rigid space is smooth or the characteristic of the base field is equal to 0. Since a smooth rigid space is locally isomorphic to the Raynaud generic fiber of an algebraizable formal scheme, we can use the techniques of alterations and monodromy spectral sequences in the smooth case. In the general case, we use the continuity theorem of Huber, which requires the restriction on the characteri…
For a polynomial ring $R=k[x_1,...,x_n]$, we present a method to compute the characteristic cycle of the localization $R_f$ for any nonzero polynomial $f\in R$ that avoids a direct computation of $R_f$ as a $D$-module. Based on this approach, we develop an algorithm for computing the characteristic cycle of the local cohomology modules $H^r_I(R)$ for any ideal $I\subseteq R$ using the Čech complex. The algorithm, in particular, is useful for answering questions regarding vanishing of local cohomology modules and computing Lyubeznik numbers. These applications are illustrated by examples of com…
This note aims at providing evidence for the section conjecture of anabelian geometry by establishing its behaviour under Weil restriction of scalars. In particular, the etale fundamental group of the Weil restriction is determined by means of a Shapiro Lemma for non-abelian group cohomology.
We compute the $\mathbb{A}^1$-localization of several invariants of schemes namely, topological Hochschild homology ($\mathrm{THH}$), topological cyclic homology ($\mathrm{TC}$) and topological periodic cyclic homology ($\mathrm{TP}$). This procedure is quite brutal and kills the completed versions of most of these invariants. The main ingredient for the vanishing statements is the vanishing of $\mathbb{A}^1$-localization of de Rham cohomology (and, eventually, crystalline cohomology) in positive characteristics.
