The prime numbers look like a randomly chosen sequence of natural numbers, but there is still no strict theory to determine 'Randomness'. In these years, cryptography has developed a battery of statistical tests for randomness. In this paper, we just apply these methods to study the distribution of primes. Here the binary sequence constructed by second difference of primes is used as samples. We find this sequence can't reach all the 'random standard' of FIPS 140-1/2, but still show obvious random feature. The interesting self-similarity is also observed in this sequence. These results add the evidence that prime numbers is a chaos system.
In the present paper we construct normal numbers in base $q$ by concatenating $q$-ary expansions of pseudo polynomials evaluated at the primes. This extends a recent result by Tichy and the author.
In this work, we add an additional condition to strong pseudo prime test to base 2. Then, we provide theoretical and heuristics evidences showing that the resulting algorithm catches all composite numbers. Our method is based on the structure of singular cubics' Jacobian groups on which we also define an effective addition algorithm.
In this paper, we introduce a certain method to construct polynomials producing many absolute pseudoprimes. By this method, we give new polynomials producing absolute pseudoprimes with any fixed number of prime factors which can be viewed as a generalization of Chernick's result. By the similar method, we give another type of polynomials producing many absolute pseudoprimes. As concrete examples, we tabulate the counts of such numbers of our forms.
We explore two questions about pseudo-polynomials, which are functions $f:\mathbb N \to \mathbb Z$ such that $k$ divides $f(n+k) - f(n)$ for all $n,k$. First, for certain arbitrarily sparse sets $R$, we construct pseudo-polynomials $f$ with $p|f(n)$ for some $n$ only if $p \in R$. This implies that not all pseudo-polynomials satisfy an assumption of a recent paper of Kowalski and Soundararajan. We also consider $α$-primary pseudo-polynomials, where the pseudo-polynomial condition is only required for $k$ lying in a set of primes of density $α$. We show that if an $α$-primary pseudo-polynomial …
Be d_{m,n} a generic element in the infinite matrix D, with d_{1, n} defined as the n-th prime number and, for any m>1, d_{m, n} = | d_{m-1, n} - d_{m-1, n+1} | When n>1, after the first few terms the columns in the matrix appear to be constituted entirely by 0s and 2s. Here is reported a computation over about 4.55x10^8 elements of D, which suggests a pseudo-random distribution of these two values.
We provide a new algorithm for tabulating composite numbers which are pseudoprimes to both a Fermat test and a Lucas test. Our algorithm is optimized for parameter choices that minimize the occurrence of pseudoprimes, and for pseudoprimes with a fixed number of prime factors. Using this, we have confirmed that there are no PSW challenge pseudoprimes with two or three prime factors up to $2^{80}$. In the case where one is tabulating challenge pseudoprimes with a fixed number of prime factors, we prove our algorithm gives an unconditional asymptotic improvement over previous methods.
We introduce a new class of pseudoprimes-so called "overpseudoprimes" which is a special subclass of super-Poulet pseudoprimes. Denoting via h(n) the multiplicative order of 2 modulo n, we show that odd number n is overpseudoprime iff value of h(n) is invariant of all divisors d>1 of n. In particular, we prove that all composite Mersenne numbers 2^p-1,where p is prime, and squares of Wieferich primes are overpseudoprimes. We give also a generalization of the results on arbitrary base a>1 and prove that every overpseudoprime is strong pseudoprime of the same base.
From varying Egyptian fraction equations we obtain generalizations of primary pseudoperfect numbers and Giuga numbers which we call prime power psuedoperfect numbers and prime power Giuga numbers respectively. We show that a sequence of Amarnath Murthy in the OEIS is a subsequence of the sequence of prime power psuedoperfect numbers. Prime factorization conditions sufficient to imply a number is a prime power pseudoperfect number or a prime power Giuga number are given. The conditions on prime factorizations naturally give rise to a generalization of Fermat primes which we call extended Fermat…
Given a matrix $A\in \mathrm{GL}_d(\mathbb{Z})$. We study the pseudorandomness of vectors $\mathbf{u}_n$ generated by a linear recurrent relation of the form $$ \mathbf{u}_{n+1} \equiv A \mathbf{u}_n \pmod {p^t}, \qquad n = 0, 1, \ldots, $$ modulo $p^t$ with a fixed prime $p$ and sufficiently large integer $t \geq 1$. We study such sequences over very short segments of length which is not accessible via previously used methods. Our technique is based on the method of N. M. Korobov (1972) of estimating double Weyl sums and a fully explicit form of the Vinogradov mean value theorem due to K. For…
In this work we present a natural generalization of strong pseudoprime to base $b$, which we have called $q$-pseudoprime to base $b$. It allows us to present another way to define a Midy's number to base $b$ (overpseudoprime to base $b$). Besides, we count the bases $b$ such that $N$ is a $q$-probable prime base $b$ and those ones such that $N$ is a Midy's number to base $b$. Furthemore, we prove that there is not a concept analogous to Carmichael numbers to $q$-probable prime to base $b$ as with the concept of strong pseudoprimes to base $b$.
An $x$-pseudopower to base $g$ is a positive integer which is not a power of $g$ yet is so modulo $p$ for all primes $p\le x$. We improve an upper bound for the least such number due to E. Bach, R. Lukes, J. Shallit, and H. C. Williams. The method is based on a combination of some bounds of exponential sums with new results about the average behaviour of the multiplicative order of $g$ modulo prime numbers.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\F_p$ without complex multiplication, and for each prime $p$ of good reduction, let $n_E(p) = | E(\F_p) |$. Let $Q_{E,b}(x)$ be the number of primes $p \leq x$ such that $b^{n_E(p)} \equiv b\,({\rm mod}\,n_E(p))$, and $π_{E, b}^{\rm pseu}(x)$ be the number of {\it compositive} $n_E(p)$ such that $b^{n_E(p)} \equiv b\,({\rm mod}\,n_E(p))$ (also called elliptic curve pseudoprimes). Motivated by cryptography applications, we address in this paper the problem of finding upper bounds for $Q_{E,b}(x)$ and $π_{E, b}^{\rm pseu}(x)$, generalising some of the literatur…
An s-tuple of positive integers are k-wise relatively prime if any k of them are relatively prime. Exact formula is obtained for the probability that s positive integers are k-wise relatively prime.
Let $\frak{n}$ be a square-free ideal of $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$. We study the rational torsion subgroup of the Jacobian variety $J_0(\frak{n})$ of the Drinfeld modular curve $X_0(\frak{n})$. We prove that for any prime number $\ell$ not dividing $q(q-1)$, the $\ell$-primary part of this group coincides with that of the cuspidal divisor class group. We further determine the structure of the $\ell$-primary part of the cuspidal divisor class group for any prime $\ell$ not dividing $q-1$.
We describe a straightforward method to generate a random prime q such that the multiplicative group GF(q)* also has a random large prime-order subgroup. The described algorithm also yields this order p as well as a p'th primitive root of unity. The methods here are efficient asymptotically, but due to large constants may not be very useful in practical settings.
We establish an asymptotic formula for the number of k-difference twin primes associated with the Hawkins random sieve, which is a probabilistic model of the Eratosthenes sieve. The formula for k=1 was obtained by Wunderlich [Acta Arith. 26 (1974), 59--81]. We here extend this to k \geq 2 and generalize it to all l-tuples of Hawkins primes.
Let $f$ be a Rademacher or a Steinhaus random multiplicative function. Let $\varepsilon>0$ small. We prove that, as $x\rightarrow +\infty$, we almost surely have $$\bigg|\sum_{\substack{n\leq x\\ P(n)>\sqrt{x}}}f(n)\bigg|\leq\sqrt{x}(\log\log x)^{1/4+\varepsilon},$$ where $P(n)$ stands for the largest prime factor of $n$. This gives an indication of the almost sure size of the largest fluctuations of $f$.
Let pi(x) denote the number of primes smaller or equal to x. We compare sqrt{pi}(x) with sqrt{R}(x) and sqrt{li}(x), where R(x) and li(x) are the Riemann function and the logarithmic integral, respectively. We show a regularity in the distribution of the natural numbers in terms of a phase related to sqrt{pi}-sqrt{R} and indicate how li(x) can cross pi(x) for the first time.
We explore the relationship between elliptic Korselt numbers of Type I, a class of pseudoprimes introduced by Silverman in [20], and anomalous primes. We generalize a result in [20] that gives sufficient conditions for an elliptic Korselt number of Type I to be a product of anomalous primes. Finally, we prove that almost all elliptic Korselt numbers of Type I of the form n=pq are a product of anomalous primes
In recent years, computer simulations are playing a fundamental role in unveiling some of the most intriguing features of prime numbers. In this work, we define an algorithm for a deterministic walk through a two-dimensional grid that we refer to as Prime Walk. The walk is constructed from a sequence of steps dictated by and dependent on the sequence of last digits of the primes. Despite the apparent randomness of this generating sequence, the resulting structure -- both in 2d and 3d -- created by the algorithm presents remarkable properties and regularities in its pattern that we proceed to a…
Any ideal in a number field can be factored into a product of prime ideals. In this paper we study the prime ideal shortest vector problem (SVP) in the ring $ \Z[x]/(x^{2^n} + 1) $, a popular choice in the design of ideal lattice based cryptosystems. We show that a majority of rational primes lie under prime ideals admitting a polynomial time algorithm for SVP. Although the shortest vector problem of ideal lattices underpins the security of Ring-LWE cryptosystem, this work does not break Ring-LWE, since the security reduction is from the worst case ideal SVP to the average case Ring-LWE, and i…
Let $p$ be a prime number. We show that, there exists an infinite family of imaginary abelian fields such that, the Iwasawa module of the maximal multiple ${\Bbb Z}_p$-extension is non trivial and pseudo-null for each field in the family. We also discuss on an application to non-abelian Iwasawa theory in the sense of Ozaki.
Given a prime $p$, we consider the dynamical system generated by repeated exponentiations modulo $p$, that is, by the map $u \mapsto f_g(u)$, where $f_g(u) \equiv g^u \pmod p$ and $0 \le f_g(u) \le p-1$. This map is in particular used in a number of constructions of cryptographically secure pseudorandom generators. We obtain nontrivial upper bounds on the number of fixed points and short cycles in the above dynamical system.
In this paper, we analyze several variants of a simple method for generating prime numbers with fewer random bits. To generate a prime $p$ less than $x$, the basic idea is to fix a constant $q\propto x^{1-\varepsilon}$, pick a uniformly random $a<q$ coprime to $q$, and choose $p$ of the form $a+t\cdot q$, where only $t$ is updated if the primality test fails. We prove that variants of this approach provide prime generation algorithms requiring few random bits and whose output distribution is close to uniform, under less and less expensive assumptions: first a relatively strong conjecture by H.…
In 1876, Edouard Lucas showed that if an integer $b$ exists such that $b^{n-1} \equiv 1 (\mathrm{mod} \ n)$ and $b^{(n-1)/p} \not\equiv 1( \mathrm{mod} \ n)$ for all prime divisors $p$ of $n-1$ , then $n$ is prime, a result known as Lucas's converse of Fermat's little theorem. This result was considerably improved by Henry Pocklington in 1914 when he showed that it's not necessary to know all the prime factors of $n-1$ in order to determine if $n$ is prime. In this paper we optimize Pocklington's primality test for integers of the form $ap^{k}+1$ where $p$ is prime, $a<p$, $k\ge 1$. An extensi…
We investigate the race between prime numbers in many residue classes modulo $q$, assuming the standard conjectures GRH and LI. Among our results we exhibit, for the first time, prime races modulo $q$ with $n$ competitor classes where the biases do not dissolve when $n, q\to \infty$. We also study the leaders in the prime number race, obtaining asymptotic formulae for logarithmic densities when the number of competitors can be as large as a power of $q$, whereas previous methods could only allow a power of $\log q$. The proofs use harmonic analysis related to the Hardy--Littlewood circle metho…
An interesting question, known as the Gaussian moat problem, asks whether it is possible to walk to infinity on Gaussian primes with steps of bounded length. Our work examines a similar situation in the real quadratic integer ring $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{2}]$ whose primes cluster near the asymptotes $y = \pm x/\sqrt{2}$ as compared to Gaussian primes, which cluster near the origin. We construct a probabilistic model of primes in $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{2}]$ by applying the prime number theorem and a combinatorial theorem for counting the number of lattice points whose absolute values of their norms are at…
In 2009, Grant, Shallit, and Stoll constructed a large family of pseudorandom sequences, called generalized Rudin--Shapiro sequences, for which they established some results about the average of discrete correlation coefficients of order 2 in cases where the size of the alphabet is a prime number or a squarefree product of primes. We establish similar results for an even larger family of pseudorandom sequences, constructed via difference matrices, in the case of an alphabet of any size. The constructions generalize those from Grant et al. In the case where the size of the alphabet is squarefre…
We construct examples of projective toric surfaces whose blow-up at a general point has a non-polyhedral pseudo-effective cone, both in characteristic $0$ and in every prime characteristic $p$. As a consequence, we prove that the pseudo-effective cone of the Grothendieck-Knudsen moduli space $\overline M_{0,n}$ of stable rational curves is not polyhedral for $n\geq 10$ in characteristic $0$ and in characteristic $p$, for all primes $p$. Many of these toric surfaces are related to a very interesting class of arithmetic threefolds that we call arithmetic elliptic pairs of infinite order. Their a…
In recent work, we considered the frequencies of patterns of consecutive primes $\pmod{q}$ and numerically found biases toward certain patterns and against others. We made a conjecture explaining these biases, the dominant factor in which permits an easy description but fails to distinguish many patterns that have seemingly very different frequencies. There was a secondary factor in our conjecture accounting for this additional variation, but it was given only by a complicated expression whose distribution was not easily understood. Here, we study this term, which proves to be connected to bot…
We report a rigorous theory to show the origin of the unexpected periodic behavior seen in the consecutive differences between prime numbers. We also check numerically our findings to ensure that they hold for finite sequences of primes, that would eventually appear in applications. Finally, our theory allows us to link with three different but important topics: the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture, the statistical mechanics of spin systems, and the celebrated Sierpinski fractal.
We experiment with some topics in elementary number theory. For matrices defined by Gaussian primes we observe a circular spectral law for the eigenvalues. We look at matrices defined by Gaussian primes and look at the growth of the determinant, trace. We experiment with various Goldbach conjectures for Gaussian primes, Eisenstein primes, Hurwitz primes or Octavian primes. These conjectures relate with Landau or Bunyakovsky or Andrica type conjectures for rational primes. We also look at some graphs finite simple defined by primes. Finally we look at some spectra of almost periodic pseudo rand…
We present an assessment of the distance in total variation of \textit{arbitrary} collection of prime factor multiplicities of a random number in $[n]=\{1,\dots, n\}$ and a collection of independent geometric random variables. More precisely, we impose mild conditions on the probability law of the random sample and the aforementioned collection of prime multiplicities, for which a fast decaying bound on the distance towards a tuple of geometric variables holds. Our results generalize and complement those from Kubilius et al. which consider the particular case of uniform samples in $[n]$ and co…
In this paper we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of solutions in prime numbers to systems of simultaneous linear inequalities with algebraic coefficients. For $m$ simultaneous inequalities we require at least $m+2$ variables, improving upon existing methods, which generically require at least $2m+1$ variables. Our result also generalises the theorem of Green-Tao-Ziegler on linear equations in primes. Many of the methods presented apply for arbitrary coefficients, not just for algebraic coefficients, and we formulate a conjecture concerning the pseudorandomness of sieve weights which…

The aim of this article is to investigate how various Riemann Hypotheses would follow only from properties of the prime numbers. To this end, we consider two classes of $L$-functions, namely, non-principal Dirichlet and those based on cusp forms. The simplest example of the latter is based on the Ramanujan tau arithmetic function. For both classes we prove that if a particular trigonometric series involving sums of multiplicative characters over primes is $O(\sqrt{N})$, then the Euler product converges in the right half of the critical strip. When this result is combined with the functional eq…
