Let $R$ be a {\em differentiably simple Noetherian commutative} ring of characteristic $p>0$ (then $(R, \gm)$ is local with $n:= {\rm emdim} (R)<\infty$). A short proof is given of the Theorem of Harper \cite{Harper61} on classification of differentiably simple Noetherian commutative rings in prime characteristic. The main result of the paper is that there {\em exists} a {\em nilpotent simple} derivation of the ring $R$ such that if $\d^{p^i}\neq 0$ then $\d^{p^i}(x_i)=1$ for some $x_i\in \gm$. The derivation $\d $ is given {\em explicitly}, it is {\em unique} up to the action of the group ${\rm Aut}(R)$ of {\em ring} automorphisms of $R$. Let $\nsder (R)$ be the set of all such derivations. Then $\nsder (R)\simeq {\rm Aut}(R)/{\rm Aut}(R/\gm)$. The proof is based on {\em existence} and {\em uniqueness} of an {\em iterative} $\d$-{\em descent} (for each $\d \in \nsder (R)$), i.e. a sequence $\{y^{[i]}, 0\leq i<p^n\}$ in $R$ such that $y^{[0]}:=1$, $\d(y^{[i]})=y^{[i-1]}$ and $y^{[i]}y^{[j]}={i+j\choose i}y^{[i+j]}$ for all $0\leq i,j<p^n$. For each $\d\in \nsder (R)$, $\Der_{k'}(R)=\oplus_{i=0}^{n-1}R\d^{p^i}$ and $k':= \ker (\d)\simeq R/ \gm$.
In this paper we study right $S$-Noetherian rings and modules, extending of notions introduced by Anderson and Dumitrescu in commutative algebra to noncommutative rings. Two characterizations of right $S$-Noetherian rings are given in terms of completely prime right ideals and point annihilator sets. We also prove an existence result for completely prime point annihilators of certain $S$-Noetherian modules with the following consequence in commutative algebra: If a module $M$ over a commutative ring is $S$-Noetherian with respect to a multiplicative set $S$ that contains no zero-divisors for $…
We construct a ring with the properties of the title of the paper. We also construct some other local rings of embedding dimension 4 with exotic properties. Among the methods used are the {\tt Macaulay2}-package {\tt DGAlgebras} by Frank Moore, combined with and inspired by results by Anick, Avramov, Backelin, Katthän, Lemaire, Levin, Löfwall and others.
Let R be a quotient ring of a commutative coherent regular ring by a finitely generated ideal. Hovey gave a bijection between the set of coherent subcategories of the category of finitely presented R-modules and the set of thick subcategories of the derived category of perfect R-complexes. Using this isomorphism, he proved that every coherent subcategory of finitely presented R-modules is a Serre subcategory. In this paper, it is proved that this holds whenever R is a commutative noetherian ring. This paper also yields a module version of the bijection between the set of localizing subcategori…
We introduce in this work, the class of commutative rings whose lattice of ideals forms an MTL-algebra which is not necessary a BL-algebra. The so-called class of rings will be named MTL-rings. We prove that a local commutative ring with identity is an MTL-ring if and only if it is an arithmetical ring. It is shown that a noetherian commutative ring R with an identity is an MTL-ring if and only if ideals of the localization RM at a maximal ideal M are totally ordered by the set inclusion. Remarking that noetherian MTL-rings are again BL-rings, we work outside of the noetherian case by consider…

A well-known result of Köthe and Cohen-Kaplansky states that a commutative ring $R$ has the property that every $R$-module is a direct sum of cyclic modules if and only if $R$ is an Artinian principal ideal ring. This motivated us to study commutative rings for which every ideal is a direct sum of cyclic modules. Recently, in [M. Behboodi, A. Ghorbani, A. Moradzadeh-Dehkordi, Commutative Noetherian local rings whose ideals are direct sums of cyclic modules, J. Algebra 345 (2011) 257--265] the authors considered this question in the context of finite direct products of commutative Noetherian lo…
Cohen-Macaulay dimension for modules over a commutative noetherian local ring has been defined by A. A. Gerko. That is a homological invariant sharing many properties with projective dimension and Gorenstein dimension. The main purpose of this paper is to extend the notion of Cohen-Macaulay dimension for modules over commutative noetherian local rings to that for bounded complexes over non-commutative noetherian rings.
Recently, tilting and cotilting classes over commutative noetherian rings have been classified in arXiv:1203.0907. We proceed and, for each n-cotilting class C, construct an n-cotilting module inducing C by an iteration of injective precovers. A further refinement of the construction yields the unique minimal n-cotilting module inducing C. Finally, we consider localization: a cotilting module is called ample, if all of its localizations are cotilting. We prove that for each 1-cotilting class, there exists an ample cotilting module inducing it, but give an example of a 2-cotilting class which f…
We classify all tilting and cotilting classes over commutative noetherian rings in terms of descending sequences of specialization closed subsets of the Zariski spectrum. Consequently, all resolving subcategories of finitely generated modules of bounded projective dimension are classified. We also relate our results to Hochster's conjecture on the existence of finitely generated maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules.
We define canonical and $n$-canonical modules on a module-finite algebra over a Noether commutative ring and study their basic properties. Using $n$-canonical modules, we generalize a theorem on $(n,C)$-syzygy by Araya and Iima which generalize a well-known theorem on syzygies by Evans and Griffith. Among others, we prove a non-commutative version of Aoyama's theorem which states that a canonical module descends with respect to a flat local homomorphism. We also prove the codimension two-argument for modules over a coherent sheaf of algebras with a $2$-canonical module, generalizing a result o…
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with unit. We classify the characters of the group $\mathrm{EL}_d (R)$ provided that $d$ is greater than the stable range of the ring $R$. It follows that every character of $\mathrm{EL}_d (R)$ is induced from a finite dimensional representation. Towards our main result we classify $\mathrm{EL}_d (R)$-invariant probability measures on the Pontryagin dual group of $R^d$.
It is proved that a ring $R$ is a right uniserial, right Noetherian centrally essential ring if and only if $R$ is a commutative discrete valuation domain or a left and right Artinian, left and right uniserial ring. It is also proved that there exist non-commutative uniserial Artinian centrally essential rings. Victor Markov is supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, project 17-01-00895-A. It is proved that a ring $A$ is a right or left Noetherian, right distributive centrally essential ring if and only if $A=A_1\times\cdots\times A_n$, where each of the rings $A_i$ is either a commutative Dedekind domain or a uniserial Artinian centrally essential (not necessarily commutative) ring. We prove that the class of Gorenstein injective modules is both enveloping and covering over a two sided noetherian ring such that the character modules of Gorenstein injective modules are Gorenstein flat. In the second part of the paper we consider the connection between the Gorenstein injective modules and the strongly cotorsion modules. We prove that when the ring R is commutative noetherian of finite Krull dimension, the class of Gorenstein injective modules coincides with that of strongly cotorsion modules if and only if the ring R is in fact Gorenstein.
For a commutative noetherian ring A, we compare the support of a complex of A-modules with the support of its cohomology. This leads to a classification of all full subcategories of A-modules which are thick (that is, closed under taking kernels, cokernels, and extensions) and closed under taking direct sums.
In a series of papers \cite{BRV1}, \cite{BRV2}, \cite{BRV3} we introduced full quivers and pseudo-quivers of representations of algebras, and used them as tools in describing PI-varieties of algebras. In this paper we apply them to obtain a complete proof of Belov's solution of Specht's problem for affine algebras over an arbitrary Noetherian ring. The inductive step relies on a theorem that enables one to find a "$\bar q$-characteristic coefficient-absorbing polynomial in each T-ideal $Γ$," i.e., a non-identity of the representable algebra $A$ arising from $Γ$, whose ideal of evaluations in $…
We initiate a unified, axiomatic study of noncommutative algebras R whose prime spectra are, in a natural way, finite unions of commutative noetherian spectra. Our results illustrate how these commutative spectra can be functorially ``sewn together'' to form Spec R. In particular, we construct a bimodule-determined functor Mod Z -> Mod R, for a suitable commutative noetherian ring Z, from which there follows a finite-to-one, continous surjection Spec Z -> Spec R. Algebras satisfying the given axiomatic framework include PI algebras finitely generated over fields, noetherian PI algebras, envelo…
Let $R$ be a commutative ring and ${\Bbb{A}}(R)$ be the set of ideals with non-zero annihilators. The annihilating-ideal graph of $R$ is defined as the graph ${\Bbb{AG}}(R)$ with vertex set ${\Bbb{A}}(R)^*={\Bbb{A}}\setminus\{(0)\}$ such that two distinct vertices $I$ and $J$ are adjacent if and only if $IJ=(0)$. We characterize commutative Noetherian rings $R$ whose annihilating-ideal graphs have finite genus $γ(\Bbb{AG}(R))$. It is shown that if $R$ is a Noetherian ring such that $0<γ(\Bbb{AG}(R))<\infty$, then $R$ has only finitely many ideals.
This note concerns the still open question of representability of Noetherian PI-algebras. Extending a result of Rowen and Small (with an observation of Bergman) that every finitely generated module over a commutative Noetherian ring containing a field is representable, we provide a representability machinery for a Noetherian PI-algebra $R$ containing a field, which includes the case that $R$ is finite (as a module) over a commutative subalgebra isomorphic to $R/N$. We construct a family of non-representable PI-algebras demonstrating the sharpness of these results, as well as of some well known…
In this paper we prove that if $R$ is a commutative, reduced, local ring, then $R$ is Hopfian if and only if the ring $R[x]$ is Hopfian. This answers a question of Varadarajan, in the case when $R$ is a reduced local ring. We provide examples of non-Noetherian Hopfian commutative domains by proving that the finite dimensional domains are Hopfian. Also, we derive some general results related to Hopfian rings.
Let $S^{\cdot}$ be a noetherian graded algebra over a commutative $k$-algebra $A$, where $k$ is a commutative ring, and assume it is a module over a Lie algebroid ${\mathfrak g}_{A/k}$. If $S^\cdot$ is semi-simple over ${\mathfrak g}_{A/k}$ we prove that its ring of invariants $\bar S^{\cdot}$ is notherian. When ${\mathfrak g}_{A/k}$ is a solvable Lie algebra over $A$ we construct noetherian subalgebras of $S^\cdot$ from subsets of characters of ${\mathfrak g}_{A/k}$. We give similar results for noetherian modules over the pair $(S^{\cdot}, {\mathfrak g}_{A/k})$.
Let $V$ be a finite-dimensional positively-graded vector space. Let $b \in V \otimes V$ be a homogeneous element whose rank is $\text{dim}(V)$. Let $A=TV/(b)$, the quotient of the tensor algebra $TV$ modulo the 2-sided ideal generated by $b$. Let ${\sf gr}(A)$ be the category of finitely presented graded left $A$-modules and ${\sf fdim}(A)$ its full subcategory of finite dimensional modules. Let ${\sf qgr}(A)$ be the quotient category ${\sf gr}(A)/{\sf fdim}(A)$. We compute the Grothendieck group $K_0({\sf qgr}(A))$. In particular, if the reciprocal of the Hilbert series of $A$, which is a pol…
The Module Cancellation Problem solicits hypotheses that, when imposed on modules $K$, $L$, and $M$ over a ring $S$, afford the implication $K\oplus L\cong K\oplus M\Longrightarrow L\cong M$. In a well-known paper on basic element theory from 1973, Eisenbud and Evans lament the "great scarcity of strong results" in module cancellation research, expressing the wish that, "under some general hypothesis" on finitely generated modules over a commutative Noetherian ring, cancellation could be demonstrated. Singling out cancellation theorems by Bass and Dress that feature "large" projective modules,…
It is proved that for a commutative noetherian ring with dualizing complex the homotopy category of projective modules is equivalent, as a triangulated category, to the homotopy category of injective modules. Restricted to compact objects, this statement is a reinterpretation of Grothendieck's duality theorem. Using this equivalence it is proved that the (Verdier) quotient of the category of acyclic complexes of projectives by its subcategory of totally acyclic complexes and the corresponding category consisting of injective modules are equivalent. A new characterization is provided for comple…
In 2008, Rogalski and Zhang showed that if R is a strongly noetherian connected graded algebra over an algebraically closed field, then R has a canonical birationally commutative factor. This factor is, up to finite dimension, a twisted homogeneous coordinate ring B(X, L, s); here X is the projective parameter scheme for point modules over R, as well as tails of points in qgr-R. (As usual, s is an automorphism of X, and L is an s-ample invertible sheaf on X.) We extend this result to a large class of noetherian (but not strongly noetherian) algebras. Specifically, let R be a noetherian connect…
We consider the question of whether the injective modules generate the unbounded derived category of a ring as a triangulated category with arbitrary coproducts. We give an example of a non-Noetherian commutative ring where they don't, but prove that they do for any Noetherian commutative ring. For non-commutative finite dimensional algebras the question is open, and we prove that if injectives generate for such an algebra, then the finitistic dimension conjecture holds for that algebra.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring and let $\mathcal D(R)$ be its (unbounded) derived category. We show that all compactly generated t-structures in $\mathcal D(R)$ associated to a left bounded filtration by supports of Spec$(R)$ have a heart which is a Grothendieck category. Moreover, we identify all compactly generated t-structures in $\mathcal D(R)$ whose heart is a module category. As geometric consequences for a compactly generated t-structure $(\mathcal{U},\mathcal{U}^\perp [1])$ in the derived category $\mathcal{D}(\mathbb{X})$ of a Noetherian scheme $\mathbb{X}$, we get the follo…
We introduce and investigate the notion of $\gc$-projective modules over (possibly non-noetherian) commutative rings, where $C$ is a semidualizing module. This extends Holm and Jørgensen's notion of $C$-Gorenstein projective modules to the non-noetherian setting and generalizes projective and Gorenstein projective modules within this setting. We then study the resulting modules of finite $\gc$-projective dimension, showing in particular that they admit $\gc$-projective approximations, a generalization of the maximal Cohen-Macaulay approximations of Auslander and Buchweitz. Over a local (noethe…
We study skew inverse power series extensions R[[y^{-1};tau,delta]], where R is a noetherian ring equipped with an automorphism tau and a tau-derivation delta. We find that these extensions share many of the well known features of commutative power series rings. As an application of our analysis, we see that the iterated skew inverse power series rings corresponding to nth Weyl algebras are complete local, noetherian, Auslander regular domains whose right Krull dimension, global dimension, and classical Krull dimension, are all equal to 2n.
The author has previously associated to each commutative ring with unit $R$ and étale groupoid $\mathscr G$ with locally compact, Hausdorff and totally disconnected unit space an $R$-algebra $R\mathscr G$. In this paper we characterize when $R\mathscr G$ is Noetherian and when it is Artinian. As corollaries, we extend the characterization of Abrams, Aranda~Pino and Siles~Molina of finite dimensional and of Noetherian Leavitt path algebras over a field to arbitrary commutative coefficient rings and we recover the characterization of Okniński of Noetherian inverse semigroup algebras and of Zelma…
For a module-finite algebra over a commutative noetherian ring, we give a complete description of flat cotorsion modules in terms of prime ideals of the algebra, as a generalization of Enochs' result for a commutative noetherian ring. As a consequence, we show that pointwise Matlis duality gives a bijective correspondence between the isoclasses of indecomposable injective left modules and the isoclasses of indecomposable flat cotorsion right modules. This correspondence is an explicit realization of Herzog's homeomorphism induced from elementary duality of Ziegler spectra.
The injective spectrum is a topological space associated to a ring $R$, which agrees with the Zariski spectrum when $R$ is commutative noetherian. We consider injective spectra of right noetherian rings (and locally noetherian Grothendieck categories) and establish some basic topological results and a functoriality result, as well as links between the topology and the Krull dimension of the ring (in the sense of Gabriel and Rentschler). Finally, we use these results to compute a number of examples.
Let $R$ be a noetherian normal domain. We investigate when $R$ admits a faithful module whose endomorphism ring has finite global dimension. This can be viewed as a non-commutative desingularization of $\Spec(R)$. We show that the existence of such modules forces stringent conditions on the Grothendieck group of finitely generated modules over $R$. In some cases those conditions are enough to imply that $\Spec(R)$ has only rational singularities.
In this note we study dual coalgebras of algebras over arbitrary (noetherian) commutative rings. We present and study a generalized notion of coreflexive comodules and use the results obtained for them to characterize the so called coreflexive coalgebras. Our approach in this note is an algebraically topological one.
Let R be a noetherian connected graded domain of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension 3 over an uncountable algebraically closed field. Suppose that the graded quotient ring of R is a skew-Laurent ring over a field; we say that R is a birationally commutative projective surface. We classify birationally commutative projective surfaces and show that they fall into four families, parameterized by geometric data. This generalizes work of Rogalski and Stafford on birationally commutative projective surfaces generated in degree 1; our proof techniques are quite different.
Matlis showed that the injective hull of a simple module over a commutative Noetherian ring is Artinian. Many non-commutative Noetherian rings whose injective hulls of simple modules are locally Artinian have been extensively studied recently. This property had been denoted by property $(\diamond)$. In this paper we investigate, which non-Noetherian semiprimary commutative quasi-local rings $(R, m)$ satisfy property $(\diamond)$. For quasi-local rings $(R,m)$ with $m^3=0$, we prove a characterisation of this property in terms of the dual space of $Soc(R)$. Furthermore, we show that $(R,m)$ sat…
Let R be an associative ring with identity. We study an elementary generalization of the classical Zariski topology, applied to the set of isomorphism classes of simple left R-modules (or, more generally, simple objects in a complete abelian category). Under this topology the points are closed, and when R is left noetherian the corresponding topological space is noetherian. If R is commutative (or PI, or FBN) the topology is equivalent to the Zariski topology, and when R is the first Weyl algebra (in characteristic zero) we obtain a one-dimensional irreducible noetherian topological space. Com…
Let $A$ be an algebra over a commutative ring $R$. If $R$ is noetherian and $A^\circ$ is pure in $R^A$, then the categories of rational left $A$-modules and right $A^\circ$-comodules are isomorphic. In the Hopf algebra case, we can also strengthen the Blattner-Montgomery duality theorem. Finally, we give sufficient conditions to get the purity of $A^\circ$ in $R^A$.
For a finite ring $R$, not necessarily commutative, we prove that the category of $\text{VIC}(R)$-modules over a left Noetherian ring $\mathbf{k}$ is locally Noetherian, generalizing a theorem of the authors that dealt with commutative $R$. As an application, we prove a very general twisted homology stability for $\text{GL}_n(R)$ with $R$ a finite noncommutative ring.
In this short paper we study for the skew PBW (Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt) extensions some homological properties arising in non-commutative algebraic geometry, namely, Auslander-Gorenstein regularity, Cohen-Macaulayness and strongly noetherianity. Skew PBW extensions include a considerable number of non-commutative rings of polynomial type such that classical PBW extensions, quantum polynomial rings, multiplicative analogue of the Weyl algebra, some Sklyanin algebras, operator algebras, diffusion algebras, quadratic algebras in 3 variables, among many others. For some key examples we present the …
Let R be a ring with identity, (M;\leq) a commutative positive strictly ordered monoid and w_m an automorphism for each m \in M . The skew generalized power series ring R[[M,w]] is a common generalization of (skew) polynomial rings, (skew) power series rings, (skew) Laurent polynomial rings, (skew) group rings, and Mal'cev Neumann Laurent series rings. If S\subset R is a multiplicative set, then R is called right S-Noetherian, if for each ideal I of R, Is \subseteq J\subseteq I for some s\in S and some finitely generated right ideal J . Unifying and generalizing a number of known results, we s…
Let $B$ be a finitely generated algebra over a field $k$. Then $B$ is called a Jacobson algebra if every semiprime ideal of $B$ is semiprimitive. We will discuss several conditions, all involving the commutant of simple $B$-modules, which imply that $B$ is Jacobson. In particular, we will recover the well-known result that every finitely generated almost commutative algebra is Jacobson. The same holds true for $\mathbb{N}$-filtered $k$-algebras $B$ with a locally finite filtration such that the associated graded $k$-algebra is left-noetherian.
We study the "q-commutative" power series ring R:=k_q[[x_1,...,x_n]], defined by the relations x_ix_j = q_{ij}x_j x_i, for multiplicatively antisymmetric scalars q_{ij} in a field k. Our results provide a detailed account of prime ideal structure for a class of noncommutative, complete, local, noetherian domains having arbitrarily high (but finite) Krull, global, and classical Krull dimension. In particular, we prove that the prime spectrum of R is normally separated and is finitely stratified by commutative noetherian spectra. Combining this normal separation with results of Chan, Wu, Yekutie…
