It is proved that for a commutative noetherian ring with dualizing complex the homotopy category of projective modules is equivalent, as a triangulated category, to the homotopy category of injective modules. Restricted to compact objects, this statement is a reinterpretation of Grothendieck's duality theorem. Using this equivalence it is proved that the (Verdier) quotient of the category of acyclic complexes of projectives by its subcategory of totally acyclic complexes and the corresponding category consisting of injective modules are equivalent. A new characterization is provided for complexes in Auslander categories and in Bass categories of such rings.
We study a notion of total acyclicity for complexes of flat sheaves over a scheme. It is Zariski-local - i.e. it can be verified on any open affine covering of the scheme - and it agrees, in their setting, with the notion studied by Murfet and Salarian for sheaves over a noetherian semi-separated scheme. As part of the study we recover, and in several cases extend the validity of, recent theorems on existence of covers and precovers in categories of sheaves. One consequence is the existence of an adjoint to the inclusion of these totally acyclic complexes into the homotopy category of complexe…
This paper studies infinite acyclic complexes of finitely generated free modules over a commutative noetherian local ring $(R,m)$ with $m^3=0$. Conclusive results are obtained on the growth of the ranks of the modules in acyclic complexes, and new sufficient conditions are given for total acyclicity. Results are also obtained on the structure of rings that admit acyclic complexes; part of this structure is exhibited by every ring $R$ that admits a non-free finitely generated non-zero module $M$ with $Ext^n(M,R)=0$ for a few $n>0$.
Let $R$ be a noetherian commutative ring, and \[ \mathbb F: ...\rightarrow F_2\rightarrow F_1\rightarrow F_0\rightarrow 0 \] a complex of flat $R$-modules. We prove that if $κ(\mathfrak p)\otimes_R\mathbb F$ is acyclic for every $\mathfrak p\in\Spec R$, then $\mathbb F$ is acyclic, and $H_0(\mathbb F)$ is $R$-flat. It follows that if $\mathbb F$ is a (possibly unbounded) complex of flat $R$-modules and $κ(\mathfrak p)\otimes_R \mathbb F$ is exact for every $\mathfrak p\in\Spec R$, then $\mathbb G\otimes_R^\bullet\mathbb F$ is exact for every $R$-complex $\mathbb G$. If, moreover, $\mathbb F$ i…
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring of prime characteristic $p$ and $f:R\to R$ the Frobenius ring homomorphism. For $e\ge 1$ let $R^{(e)}$ denote the ring $R$ viewed as an $R$-module via $f^e$. Results of Peskine, Szpiro, and Herzog state that for finitely generated modules $M$, $M$ has finite projective dimension if and only if $\operatorname{Tor}_i^R(R^{(e)},M)=0$ for all $i>0$ and all (equivalently, infinitely many) $e\ge 1$. We prove this statement holds for arbitrary modules using the theory of flat covers and minimal flat resolutions.
Foxby defined the (Krull) dimension of a complex of modules over a commutative Noetherian ring in terms of the dimension of its homology modules. In this note it is proved that the dimension of a bounded complex of free modules of finite rank can be computed directly from the matrices representing the differentials of the complex.
We define a notion of total acyclicity for complexes of flat quasi-coherent sheaves over a semi-separated noetherian scheme, generalising complete flat resolutions over a ring. By studying these complexes as objects of the pure derived category of flat sheaves we extend several results about totally acyclic complexes of projective modules to schemes; for example, we prove that a scheme is Gorenstein if and only if every acyclic complex of flat sheaves is totally acyclic. Our formalism also removes the need for a dualising complex in several known results for rings, including Jorgensen's proof …
Let M be a filtered module. Some properties of elements of M are "generic" in the following sense: (being open/stable) if an element z of M has a property P then any approximation of z has P; (being dense) any element of M is approximated by an element that has P. (Here the approximation is taken in the filtered sense.) \\ Moreover, one can often ensure an approximation with further special properties, e.g. avoiding a prescribed set of submodules. We prove that being a regular sequence is a generic property. As immediate applications we get corollaries on the generic grades of modules, heights…
A commutative noetherian ring with a dualizing complex is Gorenstein if and only if every acyclic complex of injective modules is totally acyclic. We extend this characterization, which is due to Iyengar and Krause, to arbitrary commutative noetherian rings, i.e. we remove the assumption about a dualizing complex. In this context Gorenstein, of course, means locally Gorenstein at every prime.
Cohen-Macaulay dimension for modules over a commutative noetherian local ring has been defined by A. A. Gerko. That is a homological invariant sharing many properties with projective dimension and Gorenstein dimension. The main purpose of this paper is to extend the notion of Cohen-Macaulay dimension for modules over commutative noetherian local rings to that for bounded complexes over non-commutative noetherian rings.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring. We introduce the notion of localization functors $λ^W$ with cosupports in arbitrary subsets $W$ of $\text{Spec}\, R$; it is a common generalization of localizations with respect to multiplicatively closed subsets and left derived functors of ideal-adic completion functors. We prove several results about the localization functors $λ^W$, including an explicit way to calculate $λ^W$ by the notion of Cech complexes. As an application, we can give a simpler proof of a classical theorem by Gruson and Raynaud, which states that the projective dimension of a f…
For a semi-separated noetherian scheme, we show that the category of cotorsion Gorenstein flat quasi-coherent sheaves is Frobenius and a natural non-affine analogue of the category of Gorenstein projective modules over a noetherian ring. We show that this coheres perfectly with the work of Murfet and Salarian that identifies the pure derived category of F-totally acyclic complexes of flat quasi-coherent sheaves as the natural non-affine analogue of the homotopy category of totally acyclic complexes of projective modules.
For a given class of modules $\A$, we denote by $\widetilde{\A}$ the class of exact complexes $X$ having all cycles in $\A$, and by $dw(\A)$ the class of complexes $Y$ with all components $Y_j$ in $\A$. We consider a two sided noetherian ring $R$ and we use the notations $\mathcal{GI}$ $(\mathcal{GF}, \mathcal{GP})$ for the class of Gorenstein injective (flat, projective respectively) $R$-modules. We prove (Theorem 1) that the following are equivalent: 1. Every exact complex of injective modules is totally acyclic. 2. Every exact complex of Gorenstein injective modules is in $\widetilde{\mathc…
Let R be a quotient ring of a commutative coherent regular ring by a finitely generated ideal. Hovey gave a bijection between the set of coherent subcategories of the category of finitely presented R-modules and the set of thick subcategories of the derived category of perfect R-complexes. Using this isomorphism, he proved that every coherent subcategory of finitely presented R-modules is a Serre subcategory. In this paper, it is proved that this holds whenever R is a commutative noetherian ring. This paper also yields a module version of the bijection between the set of localizing subcategori…
Let $k$ be a field, and let $X,Y$ be two locally noetherian $k$-schemes (respectively $k$-formal schemes) with dualizing complexes $R_X$ and $R_Y$ respectively. We show that $R_X \boxtimes_{k} R_Y$ (respectively its derived completion) is a dualizing complex over $X\times_{k} Y$ if and only if $X\times_{k} Y$ is locally noetherian of finite Krull dimension.
For the Cousin complex of certain modules, we investigate finiteness of cohomology modules, local duality property and injectivity of its terms. The existence of canonical modules of Noetherian non-local rings and the Cousin complexes of them with respect to the height filtration are discussed .
For a ring $A$, we consider the question whether every bounded above cochain complex of injective $A$-modules which is acyclic is null-homotopic. We show that if $A$ is left and right noetherian and has a dualizing complex, then this implies that the finitistic dimension of $A$ is finite. In the appendix, Nakamura and Thompson show that the opposite holds over any ring. Our results give several new necessary and sufficient conditions for a ring to have finite finitistic dimension in a very general setting. Applications include a generalization of a recent result of Rickard about relations betw…
We give a sufficient condition for the class of Gorenstein injective modules be precovering: if $R$ is right noetherian and if the class of Gorenstein injective modules, $\mathcal{GI}$, is closed under filtrations, then $\mathcal{GI}$ is precovering in $R-Mod$. The converse is also true when we assume that $\mathcal{GI}$ is covering. We extend our results to the category of complexes. We prove that if the class of Gorenstein injective modules is closed under filtrations then the class of Gorenstein injective complexes is precovering in $Ch(R)$. We also give a sufficient condition for the exist…
We consider the homotopy category of complexes of projective modules over a Noetherian ring. Truncation at degree zero induces a fully faithful triangle functor from the totally acyclic complexes to the stable derived category. We show that if the ring is either Artin or commutative Noetherian local, then the functor is dense if and only if the ring is Gorenstein. Motivated by this, we define the Gorenstein defect category of the ring, a category which in some sense measures how far the ring is from being Gorenstein.
Let $R$ be a ring with identity and $\C(R)$ denote the category of complexes of $R$-modules. In this paper we study the homotopy categories arising from projective (resp. injective) complexes as well as Gorenstein projective (resp. Gorenstein injective) modules. We show that the homotopy category of projective complexes over $R$, denoted $\KPC$, is always well generated and is compactly generated provided $\KPR$ is so. Based on this result, it will be proved that the class of Gorenstein projective complexes is precovering, whenever $R$ is a commutative noetherian ring of finite Krull dimension…
Examples are given to show that the support of a complex of modules over a commutative noetherian ring may not be read off the minimal semi-injective resolution of the complex. The same examples also show that a localization of a semi-injective complex need not be semi-injective.
Let C be a semidualizing complex over a noetherian local ring A. If there exists a local homomorphism with source A satisfying some homological properties, then C is dualizing.
The strong global dimension of a ring is the supremum of the length of perfect complexes that are indecomposable in the derived category. In this note we characterize the noetherian commutative rings that have finite strong global dimension. We also give a similar characterization for arbitrary noetherian schemes.
We investigate the similarities between adic finiteness and homological finiteness for chain complexes over a commutative noetherian ring. In particular, we extend the isomorphism properties of certain natural morphisms from homologically finite complexes to adically finite complexes. We do the same for characterizations of certain homological dimensions. In addition, we study transfer of adic finiteness along ring homomorphisms, all with a view toward subsequent applications.
We define and characterise small support for complexes over non-Noetherian rings and in this context prove a vanishing theorem for modules. Our definition of support makes sense for any rigidly compactly generated tensor triangulated category. Working in this generality, we establish basic properties of support and investigate when it detects vanishing. We use pointless topology to relate support, the topology of the Balmer spectrum, and the structure of the idempotent Bousfield lattice.
We introduce the notions of Koszul $N$-complex, $\check{\mathrm{C}}$ech $N$-complex and telescope $N$-complex, explicit derived torsion and derived completion functors in the derived category $\mathbf{D}_N(R)$ of $N$-complexes using the $\check{\mathrm{C}}$ech $N$-complex and the telescope $N$-complex. Moreover, we give an equivalence between the category of cohomologically $\mathfrak{a}$-torsion $N$-complexes and the category of cohomologically $\mathfrak{a}$-adic complete $N$-complexes, and prove that over a commutative noetherian ring, via Koszul cohomology, via RHom cohomology (resp. $\oti…
Let A be a commutative noetherian ring, and \a an ideal in it. In this paper we continue the study, begun in [PSY1], of the derived \a-adic completion and the derived \a-torsion functors. Here are our results: (1) a structural characterization of bounded above cohomologically complete complexes; (2) the Cohomologically Complete Nakayama Theorem; and (3) a characterization of cohomologically cofinite complexes.
This work concerns finite free complexes over commutative noetherian rings, in particular over group algebras of elementary abelian groups. The main contribution is the construction of complexes such that the total rank of their underlying free modules, or the total length of their homology, is less than predicted by various conjectures in the theory of transformation groups and in local algebra.
We classify compactly generated co-t-structures on the derived category of a commutative noetherian ring. In order to accomplish that, we develop a theory for compactly generated Hom-orthogonal pairs (also known as torsion pairs in the literature) in triangulated categories that resembles Bousfield localization theory. Finally, we show that the category of perfect complexes over a connected commutative noetherian ring admits only the trivial co-t-structures and (de)suspensions of the canonical co-t-structure and use this to describe all silting objects in the category.
A question of Avramov and Foxby concerning injective dimension of complexes is settled in the affirmative for the class of noetherian rings. A key step in the proof is to recast the problem on hand into one about the homotopy category of complexes of injective modules. Analogous results for flat dimension and projective dimension are also established.
Let A be a noetherian AS regular Koszul quiver algebra (if A is commutative, it is essentially a polynomial ring), and grA the category of finitely generated graded left A-modules. Following Jorgensen, we define the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity reg(X) of a complex X \in D^b(grA) in terms of the local cohomologies or the minimal projective resolution of X. Let A^! be the quadratic dual ring of A. For the Koszul duality functor DG : D^b(grA) -> D^b(grA^!), we have reg(X) = max {i | H^i(DG (X)) \ne 0}. Using these concepts, we study weakly Koszul modules (= componentwise linear modules) over A^…
There is a well known link from the first topic in the title to the third one. In this paper we thread that link through the second topic. The central result is a criterion for the tensor nilpotence of morphisms of perfect complexes over commutative noetherian rings, in terms of a numerical invariant of the complexes known as their level. Applications to local rings include a strengthening of the Improved New Intersection Theorem, short direct proofs of several results equivalent to it, and lower bounds on the ranks of the modules in every finite free complex that admits a structure of differe…
Let A be a commutative ring, and \a a weakly proregular ideal in A. This includes the noetherian case: if A is noetherian then any ideal in it is weakly proregular; but there are other interesting examples. In this paper we prove the MGM equivalence, which is an equivalence between the category of cohomologically \a-adically complete complexes and the category of cohomologically \a-torsion complexes. These are triangulated subcategories of the derived category of A-modules. Our work extends earlier work by Alonso- Jeremias-Lipman, Schenzel and Dwyer-Greenlees.
We prove a Cohen-Macaulay version of a result by Avramov-Golod and Frankild-Jørgensen about Gorenstein rings, showing that if a noetherian ring $A$ is Cohen-Macaulay, and $a_1,\dots,a_n$ is any sequence of elements in $A$, then the Koszul complex $K(A;a_1,\dots,a_n)$ is a Cohen-Macaulay DG-ring. We further generalize this result, showing that it also holds for commutative DG-rings. In the process of proving this, we develop a new technique to study the dimension theory of a noetherian ring $A$, by finding a Cohen-Macaulay DG-ring $B$ such that $\mathrm{H}^0(B) = A$, and using the Cohen-Macaula…
Starting from the notion of totally reflexive modules, we survey the theory of Gorenstein homological dimensions for modules over commutative rings. The account includes the theory's connections with relative homological algebra and with studies of local ring homomorphisms. It ends close to the starting point: with a characterization of Gorenstein rings in terms of total acyclicity of complexes.
For an associative ring $R$, the projective level of a complex $F$ is the smallest number of mapping cones needed to build $F$ from projective $R$-modules. We establish lower bounds for the projective level of $F$ in terms of the vanishing of homology of $F$. We then use these bounds to derive a new version of The New Intersection Theorem for level when $R$ is a commutative Noetherian local ring.
A notion of rigidity with respect to an arbitrary semidualizing complex C over a commutative noetherian ring R is introduced and studied. One of the main result characterizes C-rigid complexes. Specialized to the case when C is the relative dualizing complex of a homomorphism of rings of finite Gorenstein dimension, it leads to broad generalizations of theorems of Yekutieli and Zhang concerning rigid dualizing complexes, in the sense of Van den Bergh. Along the way, a number of new results concerning derived reflexivity with respect to C are established. Noteworthy is the statement that derive…
We investigate the set S(R) of shift-isomorphism classes of semidualizing R-complexes, ordered via the reflexivity relation, where R is a commutative noetherian local ring. Specifically, we study the question of whether S(R$ has cardinality 2^n for some n. We show that, if there is a chain of length n in S(R) and if the reflexivity ordering on S(R) is transitive, then S(R) has cardinality at least 2^n, and we explicitly describe some of its order-structure. We also show that, given a local ring homomorphism f: R\to S of finite flat dimension, if R and S admit dualizing complexes and if f is no…
Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring. We introduce a theory of formal local cohomology for complexes of R-modules. As an application, we establish some relations between formal local cohomology, local homology, local cohomology and local Tate cohomology through some natural isomorphisms. We investigate vanishing of formal local cohomology modules. Also, we give a characterization of Cohen-Macaulay complexes.
In the derived category of the category of modules over a commutative Noetherian ring $R$, we define, for an ideal $\fa$ of $R$, two different types of cohomological dimensions of a complex $X$ in a certain subcategory of the derived category, namely $\cd(\fa, X)=\sup\{\cd(\fa, \H_{\ell}(X))-\ell|\ell\in\Bbb Z\}$ and $-\inf{\mathbf R}\G_{\fa}(X)$, where $\cd(\fa, M)=\sup\{\ell\in\Bbb Z|\H^{\ell}_{\fa}(M)\neq 0\}$ for an $R$--module $M$. In this paper, it is shown, among other things, that, for any complex $X$ bounded to the left, $-\inf {\mathbf R}\G_{\fa}(X)\le\cd(\fa, X)$ and equality holds …
Let $M$ be a finite module over a noetherian ring $R$ with a free resolution of length 1. We consider the generalized Koszul complexes $\mathcal{C}_{\barλ}(t)$ associated with a map $\barλ:M\to\mathcal{H}$ into a finite free $R$-module $\mathcal{H}$ (see [IV], section 3), and investigate the homology of $\mathcal{C}_{\barλ}(t)$ in the special setup when $\grade I_M=\rank M=\dim R$. ($I_M$ is the first non-vanishing Fitting ideal of $M$.) In this case the (interesting) homology of $\mathcal{C}_{\barλ}(t)$ has finite length, and we deduce some length formulas. As an application we give a short a…
