In the derived category of the category of modules over a commutative Noetherian ring $R$, we define, for an ideal $\fa$ of $R$, two different types of cohomological dimensions of a complex $X$ in a certain subcategory of the derived category, namely $\cd(\fa, X)=\sup\{\cd(\fa, \H_{\ell}(X))-\ell|\ell\in\Bbb Z\}$ and $-\inf{\mathbf R}\G_{\fa}(X)$, where $\cd(\fa, M)=\sup\{\ell\in\Bbb Z|\H^{\ell}_{\fa}(M)\neq 0\}$ for an $R$--module $M$. In this paper, it is shown, among other things, that, for any complex $X$ bounded to the left, $-\inf {\mathbf R}\G_{\fa}(X)\le\cd(\fa, X)$ and equality holds if indeed $\H(X)$ is finitely generated.
Let A be a commutative noetherian ring, and \a an ideal in it. In this paper we continue the study, begun in [PSY1], of the derived \a-adic completion and the derived \a-torsion functors. Here are our results: (1) a structural characterization of bounded above cohomologically complete complexes; (2) the Cohomologically Complete Nakayama Theorem; and (3) a characterization of cohomologically cofinite complexes.
We introduce the notions of Koszul $N$-complex, $\check{\mathrm{C}}$ech $N$-complex and telescope $N$-complex, explicit derived torsion and derived completion functors in the derived category $\mathbf{D}_N(R)$ of $N$-complexes using the $\check{\mathrm{C}}$ech $N$-complex and the telescope $N$-complex. Moreover, we give an equivalence between the category of cohomologically $\mathfrak{a}$-torsion $N$-complexes and the category of cohomologically $\mathfrak{a}$-adic complete $N$-complexes, and prove that over a commutative noetherian ring, via Koszul cohomology, via RHom cohomology (resp. $\oti…
We prove two theorems on cohomologically complete complexes. These theorems are inspired by, and yield an alternative proof of, a recent theorem of P. Schenzel on complete modules.
This works concerns cohomological support varieties of modules over commutative local rings. The main result is that the support of a derived tensor product of a pair of differential graded modules over a Koszul complex is the join of the supports of the modules. This generalizes, and gives another proof of, a result of Dao and the third author dealing with Tor-independent modules over complete intersection rings. The result for Koszul complexes has a broader applicability, including to exterior algebras over local rings.
A theory of cohomological support for pairs of DG modules over a Koszul complex is investigated. These specialize to the support varieties of Avramov and Buchweitz defined over a complete intersection ring, as well as support varieties over an exterior algebra. The main objects of study are certain DG modules over a polynomial ring; these determine the aforementioned cohomological supports and are shown to encode (co)homological information about pairs of DG modules over a Koszul complex. The perspective in this article leads to new proofs of well-known results for pairs of complexes over a co…
In this thesis, the class of modules whose Cousin complexes have finitely generated cohomologies are studied as a subclass of modules which have uniform local cohomological annihilators and it is shown that these two classes coincide over local rings with Cohen-Macaulay formal fibres. This point of view enables us to obtain some properties of modules with finite Cousin complexes and find some characterizations of them. In this connection we discuss attached prime ideals of certain local cohomology modules in terms of cohomologies of Cousin complexes. In continuation, we study the top local coh…
Let A be a commutative ring, and \a a weakly proregular ideal in A. This includes the noetherian case: if A is noetherian then any ideal in it is weakly proregular; but there are other interesting examples. In this paper we prove the MGM equivalence, which is an equivalence between the category of cohomologically \a-adically complete complexes and the category of cohomologically \a-torsion complexes. These are triangulated subcategories of the derived category of A-modules. Our work extends earlier work by Alonso- Jeremias-Lipman, Schenzel and Dwyer-Greenlees.
Let a be an ideal of a commutative Noetherian ring R with identity. We study finitely generated R-modules M whose a-finiteness and a-cohomological dimensions are equal. In particular, we examine relative analogues of quasi-Buchsbaum, Buchsbaum and surjective Buchsbaum modules. We reveal several interactions between these types of modules that extend some of the existing results in the classical theory to the relative one.
Let R be a commutative Noetherian (not necessarily local) ring with identity and a be a proper ideal of R. We introduce a notion of a-relative system of parameters and characterize them by using the notion of cohomological dimension. Also, we present a criterion of relative Cohen-Macaulay modules via relative system of parameters.
Given a standard graded polynomial ring over a commutative Noetherian ring $A$, we prove that the cohomological dimension and the height of the ideals defining any of its Veronese subrings are equal. This result is due to Ogus when $A$ is a field of characteristic zero, and follows from a result of Peskine and Szpiro when $A$ is a field of positive characteristic; our result applies, for example, when $A$ is the ring of integers.
Let $K$ be a Gorenstein noetherian ring of finite Krull dimension, and consider the category of cohomologically noetherian commutative differential graded rings $A$ over $K$, such that $H^0(A)$ is essentially of finite type over $K$, and $A$ has finite flat dimension over $K$. We extend Grothendieck's twisted inverse image pseudofunctor to this category by generalizing the theory of rigid dualizing complexes to this setup. We prove functoriality results with respect to cohomologically finite and cohomologically essentially smooth maps, and prove a perfect base change result for $f^{!}$ in this…
We produce a criterion for open sets in projective $n$-space over a separably closed field to have étale cohomological dimension bounded by $2n-3$. We use the criterion to exhibit a scheme for which étale cohomological dimension is smaller than what a conjecture of G.~Lyubeznik predicts; the discrepancy is of arithmetic nature. For a monomial ideal, we relate extremal graded Betti numbers and étale cohomological dimension of the complement of the corresponding subspace arrangement. Moreover, we derive upper bounds for its arithmetic rank in terms of invariants distilled from the lcm-lattice.
This paper is an outcome of the author's master thesis written under the supervision of Aldo Conca. We prove some results relating connectedness properties with (local) cohomological dimension. As an interesting corollary we have that every initial complex of a Cohen-Macaulay ideal is strongly connected.
Let R denote a commutative Noetherian ring and let I be an ideal of R such that H_i^I(R) = 0, for all integers i greater than or equal to 2. In this paper we shall prove some results concerning the homological properties of I.
Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. In this paper, we study specialization-closed subsets of Spec R. More precisely, we first characterize the specialization-closed subsets in terms of various closure properties of subcategories of modules. Then, for each nonnegative integer n we introduce the notion of n-wide subcategories of R-modules to consider the question asking when a given specialization-closed subset has cohomological dimension at most n.
We study the Hodge filtration on the local cohomology sheaves of a smooth complex algebraic variety along a closed subscheme Z in terms of log resolutions, and derive applications regarding the local cohomological dimension, the Du Bois complex, local vanishing, and reflexive differentials associated to Z.
In this paper we give an upper bound, in characteristic 0, for the cohomological dimension of a graded ideal in a polynomial ring such that the quotient has depth at least 3. In positive characteristic the same bound holds true by a well-known theorem of Peskine and Szpiro. As a corollary, we give new examples of prime ideals that are not set-theoretically Cohen-Macaulay.
We establish a "second vanishing theorem" for local cohomology modules over regular rings of unramified mixed characteristic, which relates the connectedness of the spectrum of a ring with the vanishing of local cohomology. Applying this, and new results on the mixed characteristic Lyubeznik numbers, we further study connectedness properties of the spectra of a certain class of rings.
Let $(S, m)$ be an $n$-dimensional regular local ring essentially of finite type over a field and let $I$ be an ideal of $S$. We prove that if $\text{depth} S/I \ge 3$, then the cohomological dimension $\mathrm{cd}(S, I)$ of $I$ is less than or equal to $n-3$. We also show, under the assumption that $S$ has an algebraically closed residue field of characteristic zero, that if $\text{depth} S/I \ge 4$, then $\mathrm{cd}(S, I) \le n-4$ if and only if the local Picard group of the completion $\widehat{S/I}$ is torsion. We give a number of applications, including sharp bounds on cohomological dime…
We study the number of (set-theoretically) defining equations of Segre products of projective spaces times certain projective hypersurfaces, extending results by Singh and Walther. Meanwhile, we prove some results about the cohomological dimension of certain schemes. In particular, we solve a conjecture of Lyubeznik about an inequality involving the cohomological dimension and the etale cohomological dimension of a scheme, in the characteristic-zero-case and under a smoothness assumption. Furthermore, we show that a relationship between depth and cohomological dimension discovered by Peskine a…
Let $R=\oplus_{i\in \N_0}R_n$ be a standard graded ring, $R_+ :=\oplus_{i\in \N}R_n$ be the irrelevant ideal of $R$ and $\fa_0$ be an ideal of $R_0$. In this paper, as a generalization of the concept of Castelnouvo-Mumford regularity $\reg(M)$ of a finitely generated graded $R$-module $M$, we define the regularity of $M$ with respect to $\fa_0+ R_+$, say $\reg_{\fa_0+ R_+}(M)$. And we study some relations of this new invariant with the classic one. To this end, we need to consider the cohomological dimension of some finitely generated $R_0$-modules. Also, we will express $\reg_{\fa_0+ R_+}(M)$…
