Let $R$ be a noetherian commutative ring, and \[ \mathbb F: ...\rightarrow F_2\rightarrow F_1\rightarrow F_0\rightarrow 0 \] a complex of flat $R$-modules. We prove that if $κ(\mathfrak p)\otimes_R\mathbb F$ is acyclic for every $\mathfrak p\in\Spec R$, then $\mathbb F$ is acyclic, and $H_0(\mathbb F)$ is $R$-flat. It follows that if $\mathbb F$ is a (possibly unbounded) complex of flat $R$-modules and $κ(\mathfrak p)\otimes_R \mathbb F$ is exact for every $\mathfrak p\in\Spec R$, then $\mathbb G\otimes_R^\bullet\mathbb F$ is exact for every $R$-complex $\mathbb G$. If, moreover, $\mathbb F$ is a complex of projective $R$-modules, then it is null-homotopic (follows from Neeman's theorem).
Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. We give criteria for a complex of cotorsion flat R-modules to be minimal, in the sense that every self homotopy equivalence is an isomorphism. To do this, we exploit Enochs' description of the structure of cotorsion flat R-modules. More generally, we show that any complex built from covers in every degree (or envelopes in every degree) is minimal, as well as give a partial converse to this in the context of cotorsion pairs. As an application, we show that every R-module is isomorphic in the derived category over R to a minimal semi-flat complex of cotors…
We introduce a notion of pure-minimality for chain complexes of modules and show that it coincides with (homotopic) minimality in standard settings, while being a more useful notion for complexes of flat modules. As applications, we characterize von Neumann regular rings and left perfect rings.
The bottom complex of a finite polyhedal pointed rational cone is the lattice polytopal complex of the compact faces of the convex hull of nonzero lattice points in the cone. The algebra, associated to the bottom complex of a cone, defines a flat deformation of the affine toric variety, associated to the polyhedral cone, set-theoretically. We describe three explicit infinite families of abstract polytopal complexes, defining such flat deformations scheme-theoretically.
It is proved that a module $M$ over a Noetherian local ring $R$ of prime characteristic and positive dimension has finite flat dimension if Tor$_i^R({}^e R, M)=0$ for dim $R$ consecutive positive values of $i$ and infinitely many $e$. Here ${}^e R$ denotes the ring $R$ viewed as an $R$-module via the $e$th iteration of the Frobenius endomorphism. In the case $R$ is Cohen-Macualay, it suffices that the Tor vanishing above holds for a single $e\geq \log_p e(R)$, where $e(R)$ is the multiplicity of the ring. This improves a result of D. Dailey, S. Iyengar, and the second author, as well as genera…
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring. We introduce the notion of localization functors $λ^W$ with cosupports in arbitrary subsets $W$ of $\text{Spec}\, R$; it is a common generalization of localizations with respect to multiplicatively closed subsets and left derived functors of ideal-adic completion functors. We prove several results about the localization functors $λ^W$, including an explicit way to calculate $λ^W$ by the notion of Cech complexes. As an application, we can give a simpler proof of a classical theorem by Gruson and Raynaud, which states that the projective dimension of a f…
Let $R$ be a commutative ring and $I\subset R$ a finitely generated ideal. We discuss two definitions of derived $I$-adically complete (also derived $I$-torsion) complexes of $R$-modules which appear in the literature: the idealistic and the sequential one. The two definitions are known to be equivalent for a weakly proregular ideal $I$; we show that they are different otherwise. We argue that the sequential approach works well, but the idealistic one needs to be reinterpreted or properly understood. We also consider $I$-adically flat $R$-modules.
