We study noncommutative rings whose proper subrings all satisfy the same chain condition. We show that if every proper subring of a ring $R$ is right Noetherian, then $R$ is either right Noetherian or the trivial extension of $\mathbb{Z}$ by the Prüfer $p$-group for a prime $p$. We also prove that if every proper subring of $R$ is right Artinian, then $R$ is either right Artinian or $\mathbb{Z}$. For commutative rings, both results were proved by Gilmer and Heinzer in 1992. Our result for right Artinian subrings only generalises the absolute case of their commutative result. We generalise the full result (when only certain subrings are right Artinian) in the context of PI rings.
We investigate left k-Noetherian and left k-Artinian semirings. We characterize such semirings using i-injective semimodules. We prove in particular, a partial version of the celebrated Bass-Papp Theorem for semiring. We illustrate our main results by examples and counter examples.
A duality theorem of the bounded derived category of quasi-finite comodules over an artinian coalgebra is established. Let $A$ be a noetherian complete basic semiperfect algebra over an algebraically closed field, and $C$ be its dual coalgebra. If $A$ is Artin-Schelter regular, then the local cohomology of $A$ is isomorphic to a shift of twisted bimodule ${}_1C_{σ^*}$ with $σ$ a coalgebra automorphism. This yields that the balanced dualinzing complex of $A$ is a shift of the twisted bimodule ${}_{σ^*}A_1$. If $σ$ is an inner automorphism, then $A$ is Calabi-Yau.
It is proved that a ring $R$ is a right uniserial, right Noetherian centrally essential ring if and only if $R$ is a commutative discrete valuation domain or a left and right Artinian, left and right uniserial ring. It is also proved that there exist non-commutative uniserial Artinian centrally essential rings. Victor Markov is supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, project 17-01-00895-A. We obtain a complete structural characterization of Cohn-Leavitt algebras over no-exit objects as graded involutive algebras. Corollaries of this result include graph-theoretic conditions characterizing when a Leavitt path algebra is a directed union of (graded) matricial algebras over the underlying field and over the algebra of Laurent polynomials and when the monoid of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective modules is atomic and cancellative. We introduce the non-unital generalizations of graded analogues of noetherian and artinian rings, graded locally noetherian and graded l…
Let $G$ be a group with neutral element $e$ and let $S=\bigoplus_{g \in G}S_g$ be a $G$-graded ring. A necessary condition for $S$ to be noetherian is that the principal component $S_e$ is noetherian. The following partial converse is well-known: If $S$ is strongly-graded and $G$ is a polycyclic-by-finite group, then $S_e$ being noetherian implies that $S$ is noetherian. We will generalize the noetherianity result to the recently introduced class of epsilon-strongly graded rings. We will also provide results on the artinianity of epsilon-strongly graded rings. As our main application we obtain…
We survey noetherian rings $A$ over which the injective hull of every simple module is locally artinian. Then we give a general construction for algebras $A$ that do not have this property. In characteristic 0, we also complete the classification of down-up algebras with this property.
Let C be a commutative noetherian domain, G be a finitely generated abelian group which acts on C and B = C#G be the skew group ring. For a prime ideal I in C, we study the largest subring of B in which the right ideal IB becomes a two-sided ideal - the idealiser subring. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for when this idealiser subring is left and right noetherian. We also give an example of these conditions in practice which translates to an interesting number theoretic problem.
Let $α= \{ α_g : R_{g^{-1}} \rightarrow R_g \}_{g \in \textrm{mor}(G)}$ be a partial action of a groupoid $G$ on a non-associative ring $R$ and let $S = R \star_α G$ be the associated partial skew groupoid ring. We show that if $α$ is global and unital, then $S$ is left (right) artinian if and only if $R$ is left (right) artinian and $R_g = \{ 0 \},$ for all but finitely many $g \in \textrm{mor}(G)$. We use this result to prove that if $α$ is unital and $R$ is alternative, then $S$ is left (right) artinian if and only if $R$ is left (right) artinian and $R_g = \{ 0 \},$ for all but finitely ma…
R is called a right WV -ring if each simple right R-module is injective relative to proper cyclics. If R is a right WV -ring, then R is right uniform or a right V -ring. It is shown that for a right WV-ring R, R is right noetherian if and only if each right cyclic module is a direct sum of a projective module and a CS or noetherian module. For a finitely generated module M with projective socle over a V -ring R such that every subfactor of M is a direct sum of a projective module and a CS or noetherian module, we show M = X \oplus T, where X is semisimple and T is noetherian with zero socle. I…
Let $K$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with identity, let $A$ be a $K$-algebra, and let $B$ be a subalgebra of $A$ such that $A/B$ is finitely generated as a $K$-module. The main result of the paper is that $A$ is finitely presented (resp. finitely generated) if and only if $B$ is finitely presented (resp. finitely generated). As corollaries we obtain: a subring of finite index in a finitely presented ring is finitely presented; a subalgebra of finite co-dimension in a finitely presented algebra over a field is finitely presented (already shown by Voden in 2009). We also discuss the role of …
The author has previously associated to each commutative ring with unit $R$ and étale groupoid $\mathscr G$ with locally compact, Hausdorff and totally disconnected unit space an $R$-algebra $R\mathscr G$. In this paper we characterize when $R\mathscr G$ is Noetherian and when it is Artinian. As corollaries, we extend the characterization of Abrams, Aranda~Pino and Siles~Molina of finite dimensional and of Noetherian Leavitt path algebras over a field to arbitrary commutative coefficient rings and we recover the characterization of Okniński of Noetherian inverse semigroup algebras and of Zelma…
A ring R shall be called F-noetherian if every finite subset of R is contained in a (left and right) noetherian subring of R . For example, every commutative ring is tightly F-noetherian in the sense that every finite subset of R generates a noetherian subring of R . F-noetherian rings have many interesting linear algebra properties which we refer to as the full strong rank condition, fully stably finite, and more generally the basic condition. We also study some basic ring-theoretic properties of F-noetherian rings such as localizations of F-noetherian rings. The F-noetherian property is pres…
It is proved that a ring $A$ is a right or left Noetherian, right distributive centrally essential ring if and only if $A=A_1\times\cdots\times A_n$, where each of the rings $A_i$ is either a commutative Dedekind domain or a uniserial Artinian centrally essential (not necessarily commutative) ring. A torsion theoretical characterization of left Noetherian rings $R$ over which injective hulls of simple left modules are locally Artinian is given. Sufficient conditions for a left Noetherian ring to satisfy this finiteness condition are obtained in terms of torsion theories.
It is proved that if $D$ is a $UFD$ and $R$ is a $D$-algebra, such that $U(R)\cap D\neq U(D)$, then $R$ has a maximal subring. In particular, if $R$ is a ring which either contains a unit $x$ which is not algebraic over the prime subring of $R$, or $R$ has zero characteristic and there exists a natural number $n>1$ such that $\frac{1}{n}\in R$, then $R$ has a maximal subring. It is shown that if $R$ is a reduced ring with $|R|>2^{2^{\aleph_0}}$ or $J(R)\neq 0$, then any $R$-algebra has a maximal subring. Residually finite rings without maximal subrings are fully characterized. It is observed t…
Given a complete, positively filtered ring $(R,f)$ and a compatible skew derivation $(σ,δ)$, we may construct its skew power series ring $R[[x;σ,δ]]$. Due to topological obstructions, even if $δ$ is an \emph{inner} $σ$-derivation, in general we cannot ``untwist" it, i.e. reparametrise to find a filtered isomorphism $R[[x; σ, δ]] \cong R[[x'; σ]]$, as might be expected from the theory of skew polynomial rings; similarly when $σ$ is an inner automorphism. We find general conditions under which it is possible to untwist the multiplication data, and use this to analyse the structure of $R[[x;σ,δ]]…
We look at value functions of primes in simple Artinian rings and associate arithmetical pseudo-valuations to Dubrovin valuation rings which, in the Noetherian case, are $\mathbb{Z}$-valued. This allows a divisor theory for bounded Krull domains.
Given a complete local Noetherian ring $(A,\m_A)$ with finite residue field and a subfield $\pmb{k}$ of $A/\m_A$, we show that every closed subgroup $G$ of $GL_n(A)$ such that $G\mod{\m_A}\supseteq SL_n(\pmb{k})$ contains a conjugate of $SL_n(W(\pmb{k})_A)$ under some small restrictions on $\pmb{k}$. Here $W(\pmb{k})_A$ is the closed subring of $A$ generated by the Teichmüller lifts of elements of the subfield $\pmb{k}$.
Let G be a group such that its finite subgroups have bounded order, let d denote the lowest common multiple of the orders of the finite subgroups of G, and let K be a subfield of C that is closed under complex conjugation. Let U(G) denote the algebra of unbounded operators affiliated to the group von Neumann algebra N(G), and let D(KG,U(G)) denote the division closure of KG in U(G); thus D(KG,U(G)) is the smallest subring of U(G) containing KG that is closed under taking inverses. Suppose n is a positive integer, and α\in \Mat_n(KG). Then αinduces a bounded linear map α: l^2(G)^n \to ł^2(G)^n,…
Let X be a projective variety, $σ$ an automorphism of X, L a $σ$-ample invertible sheaf on X, and Z a closed subscheme of X. Inside the twisted homogeneous coordinate ring $B = B(X, L, σ)$, let I be the right ideal of sections vanishing at Z. We study the subring R = k + I of B. Under mild conditions on Z and $σ$, R is the idealizer of I in B: the maximal subring of B in which I is a two-sided ideal. We give geometric conditions on Z and $σ$ that determine the algebraic properties of R, and show that if Z and $σ$ are sufficiently general, in a sense we make precise, then R is left and right no…
Matlis showed that the injective hull of a simple module over a commutative Noetherian ring is Artinian. Many non-commutative Noetherian rings whose injective hulls of simple modules are locally Artinian have been extensively studied recently. This property had been denoted by property $(\diamond)$. In this paper we investigate, which non-Noetherian semiprimary commutative quasi-local rings $(R, m)$ satisfy property $(\diamond)$. For quasi-local rings $(R,m)$ with $m^3=0$, we prove a characterisation of this property in terms of the dual space of $Soc(R)$. Furthermore, we show that $(R,m)$ sat…
In this paper we study (non-commutative) rings $R$ over which every finitely generated left module is a direct sum of cyclic modules (called left FGC-rings). The commutative case was a well-known problem studied and solved in 1970s by various authors. It is shown that a Noetherian local left FGC-ring is either an Artinian principal left ideal ring, or an Artinian principal right ideal ring, or a prime ring over which every two-sided ideal is principal as a left and a right ideal. In particular, it is shown that a Noetherian local duo-ring $R$ is a left FGC-ring if and only if $R$ is a right FG…
In this article, the properties of being equational noetherian, $q_ω$ and $u_ω$-compactness, and equational Artinian are studied from the perspective of the Zariski topology. The equational conditions on the relative free algebras of arbitrary varieties are also investigated.
Let $A$ be a ring with minimum condition on principal right ideals. It is proved that $\aleph_0$-distributive right (left) $A$-modules coincide with Artinian (Noetherian) right (left) $A$-modules. Rings, over which all right modules are direct sums of $\aleph_0$-distributive coincide with rings of of finite representation type. Rings, whose right modules are semidistributive, coincide with Kawada rings, over basis rings of which all right modules are completely cyclic. We find a bound for the Goldie dimension of hereditary modules in terms of the cardinality of the generator sets of its quasi-injective hull. Several consequences are deduced. In particular, it is shown that every right hereditary module with countably generated quasi-injective hull is noetherian. Or that every right hereditary ring with finitely generated injective hull is artinian, thus answering a long standing open question posed by Dung, Gomez Pardo and Wisbauer.
A well-known result of Köthe and Cohen-Kaplansky states that a commutative ring $R$ has the property that every $R$-module is a direct sum of cyclic modules if and only if $R$ is an Artinian principal ideal ring. This motivated us to study commutative rings for which every ideal is a direct sum of cyclic modules. Recently, in [M. Behboodi, A. Ghorbani, A. Moradzadeh-Dehkordi, Commutative Noetherian local rings whose ideals are direct sums of cyclic modules, J. Algebra 345 (2011) 257--265] the authors considered this question in the context of finite direct products of commutative Noetherian lo…
For a noetherian ring $Λ$, the stabilization functor in the sense of Krause yields an embedding of the singularity category of $Λ$ into the homotopy category of acyclic complexes of injective $Λ$-modules. When $Λ$ contains a semisimple artinian subring $E$, we give an explicit description of the stabilization functor using the Hom complexes in the $E$-relative singular Yoneda dg category of $Λ$.
Given a right ideal $I$ in a ring $R$, the idealizer of $I$ in $R$ is the largest subring of $R$ in which $I$ becomes a two-sided ideal. In this paper we consider idealizers in the second Weyl algebra $A_2$, which is the ring of differential operators on $\mathbb{k}[x,y]$ (in characteristic $0$). Specifically, let $f$ be a polynomial in $x$ and $y$ which defines an irreducible curve whose singularities are all cusps. We show that the idealizer of the right ideal $fA_2$ in $A_2$ is always left and right noetherian, extending the work of McCaffrey.
A right $R$-module $M$ is called max-projective provided that each homomorphism $f:M \to R/I$ where $I$ is any maximal right ideal, factors through the canonical projection $π: R \to R/I$. We call a ring $R$ right almost-$QF$ (resp. right max-$QF$) if every injective right $R$-module is $R$-projective (resp. max-projective). This paper attempts to understand the class of right almost-$QF$ (resp. right max-$QF$) rings. Among other results, we prove that a right Hereditary right Noetherian ring $R$ is right almost-$QF$ if and only if $R$ is right max-$QF$ if and only if $R=S\times T$ , where $S$…
Let $R$ be a commutative ring and ${\Bbb{A}}(R)$ be the set of ideals with non-zero annihilators. The annihilating-ideal graph of $R$ is defined as the graph ${\Bbb{AG}}(R)$ with the vertex set ${\Bbb{A}}(R)^*={\Bbb{A}}\setminus\{(0)\}$ and two distinct vertices $I$ and $J$ are adjacent if and only if $IJ=(0)$. We investigate commutative rings $R$ whose annihilating-ideal graphs have positive genus $γ(\Bbb{AG}(R))$. It is shown that if $R$ is an Artinian ring such that $γ(\Bbb{AG}(R))<\infty$, then $R$ has finitely many ideals or $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ is a Gorenstein ring with maximal ideal $\mat…
Recently, in a series of papers "simple" versions of direct-injective and direct-projective modules have been investigated. These modules are termed as "simple-direct-injective" and "simple-direct-projective", respectively. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of the aforementioned modules over the ring of integers and over semilocal rings. The ring is semilocal if and only if every right module with zero Jacobson radical is simple-direct-projective. The rings whose simple-direct-injective right modules are simple-direct-projective are fully characterized. These are exactly the l…
We define generalized Koszul modules and rings and develop a generalized Koszul theory for $\mathbb{N}$-graded rings with the degree zero part noetherian semiperfect. This theory specializes to the classical Koszul theory for graded rings with degree zero part artinian semisimple developed by Beilinson-Ginzburg-Soergel and the ungraded Koszul theory for noetherian semiperfect rings developed by Green and Martin{é}z-Villa. Let $A$ be a left finite $\mathbb{N}$-graded ring generated in degree $1$ with $A_0$ noetherian semiperfect, $J$ be its graded Jacobson radical and $S=A/J$. By the Koszul dua…
Commutative rings in which every prime ideal is the intersection of maximal ideals are called Hilbert (or Jacobson) rings. We propose to define classical Hilbert modules by the property that {\it classical prime} submodules are the intersection of maximal submodules. It is shown that all co-semisimple modules as well as all Artinian modules are classical Hilbert modules. Also, every module over a zero-dimensional ring is classical Hilbert. Results illustrating connections amongst the notions of classical Hilbert module and Hilbert ring are also provided. Rings $R$ over which all $R$-modules ar…
This paper investigates situations where a property of a ring can be tested on a set of "prime right ideals." Generalizing theorems of Cohen and Kaplansky, we show that every right ideal of a ring is finitely generated (resp. principal) iff every "prime right ideal" is finitely generated (resp. principal), where the phrase "prime right ideal" can be interpreted in one of many different ways. We also use our methods to show that other properties can be tested on special sets of right ideals, such as the right artinian property and various homological properties. Applying these methods, we prove…
