We describe the Voevodsky's category $DM^{eff}_{gm}$ of motives in terms of Suslin complexes of smooth projective varieties. This shows that Voeovodsky's $DM_{gm}$ is anti-equivalent to Hanamura's one. We give a description of any triangulated subcategory of $DM^{eff}_{gm}$ (including the category of effective mixed Tate motives). We descibe 'truncation' functors $t_N$ for $N>0$. $t=t_0$ generalizes the weight complex of Soule and Gillet; its target is $K^b(Chow_{eff})$; it calculates $K_0(DM^{eff}_{gm})$, and checks whether a motive is a mixed Tate one. $t_N$ give a weight filtration and a 'motivic descent spectral sequence' for a large class of realizations, including the 'standard' ones and motivic cohomology. This gives a new filtration for the motivic cohomology of a motif. For 'standard realizations' for $l,s\ge 0$ we have a nice description of $W_{l+s}H^i/W_{l-1}H^i(X)$ in terms of $t_s(X)$.
We define the 'length of a motif' that (modulo standard conjectures) coincides with the 'total' length of the weight filtration of singular cohomology. Over a finite field $t_0Q$ is (modulo Beilinson-Parshin conjecture) an equivalence.
Let k be a perfect field. In this paper we prove that biextensions of 1-motives define multilinear morphisms between 1-motives in Voevodsky's triangulated category of effective geometrical motives over k with rational coefficients.
We prove formulae for the motives of stacks of coherent sheaves of fixed rank and degree over a smooth projective curve in Voevodsky's triangulated category of mixed motives with rational coefficients.
Following an insight of Kontsevich, we prove that the quotient of Voevodsky's category of geometric mixed motives DM by the endofunctor -Q(1)[2] embeds fully-faithfully into Kontsevich's category of noncommutative mixed motives KMM. We show also that this embedding is compatible with the one between pure motives. As an application, we obtain a precise relation between the Picard groups Pic(-), the Grothendieck groups, the Schur-finitenss, and the Kimura-finitenss of the categories DM and KMM. In particular, the quotient of Pic(DM) by the subgroup of Tate twists Q(i)[2i] injects into Pic(KMM). …
We prove a formula for the motive of the stack of vector bundles of fixed rank and degree over a smooth projective curve in Voevodsky's triangulated category of mixed motives with rational coefficients.
We study mixed versions of the classical quotient functor from Chow motives to numerical motives. We compare two natural definitions, which turn out to be very different. We investigate fullness, conservativity and exactness of these two functors.
By defining and studying functorial properties of the Borel-Moore motivic homology, we identify the heart of Bondarko-Hébert's weight structure on Beilinson motives with Corti-Hanamura's category of Chow motives over a base, therefore answering a question of Bondarko.
In this note we describe very explicitly a rich family of mixed motives that generates Voevodsky's $DM^{eff}_{gm}{\mathbb{Q}}$ (as a triangulated category). They "should be" mixed since they have only one non-zero Betti cohomology group. Our method also allows to define a family of direct summands of the numerical motif of any smooth projective variety $P$. Modulo certain standard conjectures, this construction yields the Kunneth decomposition of the diagonal of $P$.
Over a perfect field k, let G be an extension of an abelian variety by the multiplicative group $\G_m$. We compute the motive of G in Voevodsky's category of etale motivic complexes with rational coefficients. The result is a decomposition similar to the classical decomposition of the Chow motive of an abelian variety obtained by Deninger/Murre, Kuennemann, Shermenev and Scholl, and other authors.
Let X be an n-dimensional smooth proper variety over a field admitting resolution of singularities, and Y,Z two disjoint closed subsets of X. We establish an isomorphism M(X-Z,Y) isomorphic to M(X-Y,Z)^*(n)[2n] in Voevodsky's triangulated category of geometric motives. Here, M(X-Z,Y) is the motive of X -Z relative to its closed subset Y.
We describe Somekawa's K-group associated to a finite collection of semi-abelian varieties (or more general sheaves) in terms of the tensor product in Voevodsky's category of motives. While Somekawa's definition is based on Weil reciprocity, Voevodsky's category is based on homotopy invariance. We apply this to explicit descriptions of certain algebraic cycles.
We first recall the construction of the Chow motive modelling intersection cohomology of a proper surface and study its fundamental properties. Using Voevodsky's category of effective geometrical motives, we then study the motive of the exceptional divisor in a non-singular blow-up. If all geometric irreducible components of the divisor are of genus zero, then Voevodsky's formalism allows us to construct certain one-extensions of Chow motives, as canonical sub-quotients of the motive with compact support of the smooth part of the surface. Specializing to Hilbert--Blumenthal surfaces, we recove…
Using the theory of framed correspondences developed by Voevodsky, we introduce and study framed motives of algebraic varieties. They are the major computational tool for constructing an explicit quasi-fibrant motivic replacement of the suspension $\mathbb P^1$-spectrum of any smooth scheme $X\in Sm/k$. Moreover, it is shown that the bispectrum $$(M_{fr}(X),M_{fr}(X)(1),M_{fr}(X)(2),\ldots),$$ each term of which is a twisted framed motive of $X$, has motivic homotopy type of the suspension bispectrum of $X$. Furthermore, an explicit computation of infinite $\mathbb P^1$-loop motivic spaces is …
We study the motive of the moduli space of semistable Higgs bundles of coprime rank and degree on a smooth projective curve C over a field k under the assumption that C has a rational point. We show this motive is contained in the thick tensor subcategory of Voevodsky's triangulated category of motives with rational coefficients generated by the motive of C. Moreover, over a field of characteristic zero, we prove a motivic non-abelian Hodge correspondence: the integral motives of the Higgs and de Rham moduli spaces are isomorphic.
In this paper, we construct four different theories of integration, two that are for Voevodsky motives, one for mixed $\ell$-adic sheaves, and a fourth theory of integration for rational mixed Hodge structures. We then show that they circumvent some of the complications of classical motivic integration, leading to new arithmetic and geometric results concerning K-equivalent $k$-varieties. For example, in addition to recovering known results regarding K-equivalent smooth projective complex varieties, we show that K-equivalent smooth projective $\mathbb{F}_q$-varieties have isomorphic rational $…
We define and study the motive of the moduli stack of vector bundles of fixed rank and degree over a smooth projective curve in Voevodsky's category of motives. We prove that this motive can be written as a homotopy colimit of motives of smooth projective Quot schemes of torsion quotients of sums of line bundles on the curve. When working with rational coefficients, we prove that the motive of the stack of bundles lies in the localising tensor subcategory generated by the motive of the curve, using Bialynicki-Birula decompositions of these Quot schemes. We conjecture a formula for the motive o…
After reviewing some basic facts about pure and mixed motives, we explain, following Deligne-Goncharov, how to construct a de Rham realisation functor from the category of geometric mixed motives to the category of bifiltered vector spaces.
We prove that the embedding of the derived category of 1-motives into the triangulated category of effective Voevodsky motives, as well as its left adjoint functor $LAlb$, commute with the Hodge realization.
In this thesis we compare V. Voevodsky's geometric motives to the derived category of M. Nori's abelian category of mixed motives by constructing a triangulated tensor functor between them. It will be compatible with the Betti realizations on both sides. We allow an arbitrary noetherian ring of coefficients, but require it to be a field or a Dedekind domain for the tensor structure on derived Nori motives to exist. There are three key ingredients: we present a theory of Nisnevich covers on finite acyclic diagrams of finite correspondences, explain, following D. Rydh, how to interpret finite co…
In this paper we describe the category of motives for an elliptic curve in the sense of Voevodsky as a derived category of dg modules over a commutative differential graded algebra in the category of representations over some reductive group.
This survey covers some of the recent developments on noncommutative motives and their applications. Among other topics, we compute the additive invariants of relative cellular spaces and orbifolds; prove Kontsevich's semi-simplicity conjecture; prove a far-reaching noncommutative generalization of the Weil conjectures; prove Grothendieck's standard conjectures of type C+ and D, Voevodsky's nilpotence conjecture, and Tate's conjecture, in several new cases; embed the (cohomological) Brauer group into secondary K-theory; construct a noncommutative motivic Gysin triangle; compute the localizing …
We introduce a tower of localizing subcategories in Voevodsky's big (closed under infinite coproducts) triangulated category of motives. We show that the tower induces an interesting finite filtration on the motivic cohomology groups of smooth schemes over a perfect field. With rational coefficients, this finite filtration satisfies several of the properties of the still conjectural Bloch-Beilinson-Murre filtration.
In this self-contained paper we prove that Voevodsky's smooth blowup triangle of motives generalises to a smooth blowup triangle of motives with modulus.
The goal of this paper is to extend the work of Voevodsky and Morel on the homotopy $t$-structure on the category of motivic complexes to the context of motives for logarithmic schemes. To do so, we prove an analogue of Morel's connectivity theorem and show a purity statement for $(\mathbf{P}^1, \infty)$-local complexes of sheaves with log transfers. The homotopy $t$-structure on $\mathbf{logDM}^{\textrm{eff}}(k)$ is proved to be compatible with Voevodsky's $t$-structure i.e. we show that the comparison functor $R^{\overline{\square}}ω^*\colon \mathbf{DM}^{\textrm{eff}}(k)\to \mathbf{logDM}^{\…
We apply Wildeshaus's theory of motivic intermediate extensions to the motivic decomposition conjecture, formulated by Deninger-Murre and Corti-Hanamura. We first obtain a general motivic decomposition for the Chow motive of an arbitrary smooth projective family $f:X \rightarrow S$ whose geometric fibers are Tate. Using Voevodsky's motives with rational coefficients, the formula is valid for an arbitrary regular base $S$, without assuming the existence of a base field or even of a prime integer $\ell$ invertible on $S$. This result, and some of Bondarko' ideas, lead us to a generalized formula…
We show that the orthogonal spectral sequence introduced by the second author is strongly convergent in Voevodsky's triangulated category of motives DM over a field k. In the context of the Morel-Voevodsky motivic stable homotopy category we provide concrete examples where the spectral sequence is not strongly convergent, and give a criterion under which the strong convergence still holds. This criterion holds for Voevodsky's slices, and as a consequence we obtain a spectral sequence which converges strongly to the E1-term of Voevodsky's slice spectral sequence.
We prove: if the (étale or de Rham) realization functor is conservative on the category $DM_{gm}$ of Voevodsky motives with rational coefficients then motivic zeta functions of arbitrary varieties are rational and numerical motives are Kimura-finite. The latter statement immediately implies that the category of numerical motives is (essentially) Tannakian. This observation becomes actual due to the recent announcement of J. Ayoub that the De Rham cohomology realization is conservative on $DM_{gm}(k)$ whenever $\operatorname{char} k=0$. We apply this statement to exterior powers of motives comi…
This thesis presents a way to apply this theorem of Gabber to a large portion of Voevodsky's work in order to lift the assumption that resolution of singularities holds. This gives unconditional versions of many of his and others' theorems provided we work Z[1/p] linearly, where p is the exponential characteristic of the base field. One example of the many applications we give is a partial answer to a 1980 conjecture of Weibel. Another is the removal of the hypothesis of resolution of singularities from a result of Suslin that compares Bloch's higher Chow groups and etale cohomology. Voevodsky…
In paper 0704.4003, Bondarko recently defined the notion of weight structure, and proved that the category $\DgM$ of geometrical motives over a perfect field k, as defined and studied by Voevodsky, Suslin and Friedlander, is canonically equipped with such a structure. Building on this result, and under a condition on the weights avoided by the boundary motive, we describe a method to construct intrinsically in $\DgM$ a motivic version of interior cohomology of smooth, but possibly non-projective schemes. In a sequel to this work, this method will be applied to Shimura varieties.
Over a subfield of the field of complex numbers, the Hodge realization of a geometrical motive is defined and represented as the cohomology of a mixed Hodge DG-complex in the sense of Deligne. Both filtrations are represented by truncation functors, on a Bondarko weight complex for the weight filtration and on the De Rham motivic complex for the Hodge one. The Deligne-Beilinson realization is also constructed. This preprint partially replaces the former "Réalisation des complexes motiviques de Voevodsky".
The goal of this paper is to define a certain Chow weight structure for the category of Voevodsky's motivic complexes with integral coefficients (as described by Cisinski and Deglise) over any excellent finite-dimensional separated scheme $S$. Our results are parallel to (though substantially weaker than) the corresponding 'rational coefficient' statements proved by D. Hebert and the author. As an immediate consequence of the existence of 'weights', we obtain certain (Chow)-weight spectral sequences and filtrations for any (co)homology of $S$-motives.
A natural place to study the Chow ring of the classifying space $BG$, for $G$ a linear algebraic group, is Voevodsky's triangulated category of motives, inside which Morel and Voevodsky, and Totaro have defined motives $M(BG)$ and $M^c(BG)$, respectively. We show that, for any group $G$ of order $p^3$ over a field of characteristic not $p$ which contains a primitive $p^2$-th root of unity, the motive $M(BG)$ is a mixed Tate motive. We also show that, for a finite group $G$ over a field of characteristic zero, $M(BG)$ is a mixed Tate motive if and only $M^c(BG)$ is a mixed Tate motive.
We prove 2-out-of-3 property for rationality of motivic zeta function in distinguished triangles in Voevodsky's category DM. As an application, we show rationality of motivic zeta functions for all varieties whose motives are in the thick triangulated monoidal subcategory generated by motives of quasi-projective curves in DM. Joint with a result of P.O'Sullivan it also gives an example of a variety whose motive is not finite-dimensional while the motivic zeta function is rational.
We study Grothedieck groups of triangulated categories using weight structures, weight complexes, and the corresponding pure (co)homological functors. We prove some general statements on $K_0$ of weighted categories and apply it to Voevodsky motives endowed with so-called Chow weight structures. We obtain certain "motivic substitutes" for smooth compactifications of smooth varieties over arbitrary perfect fields; this enables us to make certain unramified cohomology and Euler characteristic calculations that are closely related to results of T. Ekedahl and B. Kahn.
We construct and study a triangulated category of motives with modulus $\mathbf{MDM}_{\mathrm{gm}}^{\mathrm{eff}}$ over a field $k$ that extends Voevodsky's category $\mathbf{DM}_{\mathrm{gm}}^{\mathrm{eff}}$ in such a way as to encompass non-homotopy invariant phenomena. In a similar way as $\mathbf{DM}_{\mathrm{gm}}^{\mathrm{eff}}$ is constructed out of smooth $k$-varieties, $\mathbf{MDM}_{\mathrm{gm}}^{\mathrm{eff}}$ is constructed out of proper modulus pairs, introduced in Part I of this work. To such a modulus pair we associate its motive in $\mathbf{MDM}_{\mathrm{gm}}^{\mathrm{eff}}$. In…
The category of effective Grothendieck-Witt-motives $\mathbf{DM}^{GW}_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)$ (and Witt-motives $\mathbf{DM}^W_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)$) by Voevodsky-Suslin method starting with some category of GW-correspondences (and Witt-correspondences) over a perfect field $k$, $char\,k\neq 2$, is defined. The functor $M^{GW}_{eff}\colon Sm_k\to \mathbf{DM}^{GW}_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)$ of Grothendieck-Witt-motives of smooth varieties is computed and it is proved that for any smooth scheme $X$ and homotopy invariant sheave with GW-transfers $F$ $$ Hom_{\mathbf{DM}^{GW}_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)}(M^{GW}_{ef…
An alternative approach to the classical Morel-Voevodsky stable motivic homotopy theory $SH(k)$ is suggested. The triangulated category of framed bispectra $SH_{nis}^{fr}(k)$ and effective framed bispectra $SH_{nis}^{fr,eff}(k)$ are introduced in the paper. Both triangulated categories only use Nisnevich local equivalences and have nothing to do with any kind of motivic equivalences. It is shown that $SH_{nis}^{fr}(k)$ and $SH_{nis}^{fr,eff}(k)$ recover the classical Morel-Voevodsky triangulated categories of bispectra $SH(k)$ and effective bispectra $SH^{eff}(k)$ respectively. We also recover…
The machinery of framed (pre)sheaves was developed by Voevodsky [V1]. Based on the theory, framed motives of algebraic varieties are introduced and studied in [GP1]. An analog of Voevodsky's Cancellation Theorem [V1] is proved in this paper for framed motives stating that a natural map of framed $S^1$-spectra $$M_{fr}(X)(n)\to\underline{\textrm{Hom}}(\mathbb G,M_{fr}(X)(n+1)),\quad n\geq 0,$$ is a schemewise stable equivalence, where $M_{fr}(X)(n)$ is the $n$th twisted framed motive of $X$. This result is also necessary for the proof of the main theorem of [GP1] computing fibrant resolutions o…
We connect two developments aiming at extending Voevodsky's theory of motives over a field in such a way to encompass non-$\mathbf{A}^1$-invariant phenomina. One is theory of reciprocity sheaves introduced by Kahn-Saito-Yamazaki. Another is theory of the triangulated category $\operatorname{\mathbf{logDM}}^{\operatorname{eff}}$ of logarithmic motives launched by Binda, Park and Østvær. We prove that the Nisnevich cohomology of reciprocity sheaves is representable in $\operatorname{\mathbf{logDM}}^{\operatorname{eff}}$.
We construct "MV squares" in the category $\mathbf{MCor}$ of modulus pairs which was introduced in arXiv:1511.07124 [math:AG]. They allow us to describe the category $\mathbf{MDM}_{\mathrm{gm}}^{\mathrm{eff}}$ of loc. cit. in a similar way as Voevodskys category $\mathbf{DM}_{\mathrm{gm}}^{\mathrm{eff}}$, thus sharpening the results of the quoted paper.
We describe certain criteria for a motif $M$ to be $r$-effective, i.e., to belong to the $r$th Tate twist $Obj DM^{eff}_{gm,R}(r)=Obj DM^{eff}_{gm,R} \otimes L^{\otimes r}$ of effective Voevodsky motives (for $r\ge 1$; $R$ is the coefficient ring). In particular, $M$ is 1-effective if and only if a complex whose terms are certain Chow groups of zero-cycles is acyclic. The dual to this statement checks whether an effective motif $M$ belongs to the subcategory of $DM^{eff}_{gm,R}$ generated by motives of varieties of dimension $\le r$. These criteria are formulated in terms of the Chow-weight (c…
In the first half of this article we define a new weight homology functor on Voevodsky's category of effective motives, and investigate some of its properties. In special cases we recover Gillet-Soulé's weight homology, and Geisser's Kato-Suslin homology. In the second half, we consider the notions of "co-étale" and "reduced" motives, and use the notions to a prove a theorem comparing motivic homology to étale motivic homology. Due to the first author's Ph.D. thesis arXiv:1305.5349 we do not have to restrict to smooth schemes.
We study in detail the so-called Chow-weight homology of Voevodsky motivic complexes and relate it to motivic homology. We generalize earlier results and prove that the vanishing of higher motivic homology groups of a motif $M$ implies similar vanishing for its Chow-weight homology along with effectivity properties of the higher terms of its weight complex $t(M)$ and of higher Deligne weight quotients of its cohomology. Applying this statement to motives with compact support we obtain a similar relation between the vanishing of Chow groups and the cohomology with compact support of varieties. …
In this article we introduce the local versions of the Voevodsky category of motives with Z/p-coefficients over a field k, parameterized by finitely-generated extensions of k. We introduce the, so-called, flexible fields, passage to which is conservative on motives. We demonstrate that, over flexible fields, the constructed local motivic categories are much simpler than the global one and more reminiscent of a topological counterpart. This provides handy "local" invariants from which one can read motivic information. We compute the local motivic cohomology of a point, for p=2, and study the lo…
In this article we study the subgroup of the Picard group of Voevodsky's category of geometric motives generated by the reduced motives of affine quadrics. Our main tools here are the functors of Bachmann, but we also provide an alternative method. We show that the group in question can be described in terms of indecomposable direct summands in the motives of projective quadrics. In particular, we describe all the relations among the reduced motives of affine quadrics. We also extend the Criterion of motivic equivalence of projective quadrics.
