We study the matrices Q_k of in-forests of a weighted digraph G and their connections with the Laplacian matrix L of G. The (i,j) entry of Q_k is the total weight of spanning converging forests (in-forests) with k arcs such that i belongs to a tree rooted at j. The forest matrices, Q_k, can be calculated recursively and expressed by polynomials in the Laplacian matrix; they provide representations for the generalized inverses, the powers, and some eigenvectors of L. The normalized in-forest matrices are row stochastic; the normalized matrix of maximum in-forests is the eigenprojection of the Laplacian matrix, which provides an immediate proof of the Markov chain tree theorem. A source of these results is the fact that matrices Q_k are the matrix coefficients in the polynomial expansion of adj(a*I+L). Thereby they are precisely Faddeev's matrices for -L.

Let $G$ be a finite simple graph with Laplacian polynomial $ψ(G,λ)=\sum_{k=0}^n(-1)^{n-k}c_kλ^k$. In an earlier paper, the coefficients $c_{n-4}$ and $c_{n-5}$ for tree with respect to some degree-based graph invariants were computed. The aim of this paper is to continue this work by giving an exact formula for the coefficients $c_{n-6}$. As a consequence of this work, the Laplacian coefficients $c_{n-k}$ of a forest $F$, $1\leq k \leq 6$, are computed in terms of the number of closed walks in $F$ and its line graph.
Turán type extremal problem is how to maximize the number of edges over all graphs which do not contain fixed forbidden subgraphs. Similarly, spectral Turán type extremal problem is how to maximize (signless Laplacian) spectral radius over all graphs which do not contain fixed subgraphs. In this paper, we first present a stability result for $k\cdot P_3$ in terms of the number of edges and then determine all extremal graphs maximizing the signless Laplacian spectral radius over all graphs which do not contain a fixed linear forest with at most two odd paths or $k\cdot P_3$ as a subgraph, respe…
We consider matrices with entries that are polynomials in $q$ arising from natural $q$-generalisations of two well-known formulas that count: forests on $n$ vertices with $k$ components; and trees on $n+1$ vertices where $k$ children of the root are smaller than the root. We give a combinatorial interpretation of the corresponding statistic on forests and trees and show, via the construction of various planar networks and the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot lemma, that these matrices are coefficientwise totally positive. We also exhibit generalisations of the entries of these matrices to polynomials …
In this paper, we obtain the bounds of the extreme eigenvalues of a normalized and signless Laplacian matrices using by their traces. In addition, we determine the bounds for k-th eigenvalues of normalized and signless Laplacian matrices.
In [Steve Butler. A note about cospectral graphs for the adjacency and normalized Laplacian matrices. Linear Multilinear Algebra, 58(3-4):387-390, 2010.], Butler constructed a family of bipartite graphs, which are cospectral for both the adjacency and the normalized Laplacian matrices. In this article, we extend this construction for generating larger classes of bipartite graphs, which are cospectral for both the adjacency and the normalized Laplacian matrices. Also, we provide a couple of constructions of non-bipartite graphs, which are cospectral for the adjacency matrices but not necessaril…
A signed graph is a graph whose edges are labeled either positive or negative. Corresponding to the two signed distance matrices defined for signed graphs, we define two signed distance laplacian matrices. We characterize balance in signed graphs using these matrices and find signed distance laplacian spectra of some classes of unbalanced signed graphs.
The characteristic polynomials of the adjacency matrix of line graphs of caterpillars and then the characteristic polynomials of their Laplacian or signless Laplacian matrices are characterized, using recursive formulas. Furthermore, the obtained results are applied on the determination of upper and lower bounds on the algebraic connectivity of these graphs.
It has been an open problem to find the Moore-Penrose inverses of the incidence, Laplacian, and signless Laplacian matrices of families of graphs except trees and unicyclic graphs. Since the inverse formulas for an odd unicyclic graph and an even unicyclic graph are quite different, we consider wheel graphs as they are formed from odd or even cycles. In this article solve the open problem for wheel graphs. This work has an interesting connection to inverses of circulant matrices.
The trees, respectively unicyclic graphs, on $n$ vertices with the smallest Laplacian permanent are studied. In this paper, by edge-grafting transformations, the $n$-vertex trees of given bipartition having the second and third smallest Laplacian permanent are identified. Similarly, the $n$-vertex bipartite unicyclic graphs of given bipartition having the first, second and third smallest Laplacian permanent are characterized. Consequently, the $n$-vertex bipartite unicyclic graphs with the first, second and third smallest Laplacian permanent are determined.
Let $G=(V,\overrightarrow{E})$ be a graph with some prescribed orientation for the edges and $Γ$ be an arbitrary group. If $f\in \mathrm{Inv}(Γ)$ be an anti-involution then the skew gain graph $Φ_f=(G,Γ,φ,f)$ is such that the skew gain function $φ:\overrightarrow{E}\rightarrow Γ$ satisfies $φ(\overrightarrow{vu})=f(φ(\overrightarrow{uv}))$. In this paper, we study two different types, Laplacian and $g$-Laplacian matrices for a skew gain graph where the skew gains are taken from the multiplicative group $F^\times$ of a field $F$ of characteristic zero. Defining incidence matrix, we also prove t…
We provide upper and lower bounds on the smallest eigenvalue of grounded Laplacian matrices (which are matrices obtained by removing certain rows and columns of the Laplacian matrix of a given graph). The gap between the upper and lower bounds depends on the ratio of the smallest and largest components of the eigenvector corresponding to the smallest eigenvalue of the grounded Laplacian. We provide a graph-theoretic bound on this ratio, and subsequently obtain a tight characterization of the smallest eigenvalue for certain classes of graphs. Specifically, for Erdos-Renyi random graphs, we show…
The \emph{distance matrix} of a simple connected graph $G$ is $D(G)=(d_{ij})$, where $d_{ij}$ is the distance between the vertices $i$ and $j$ in $G$. We consider a weighted tree $T$ on $n$ vertices with edge weights are square matrix of same size. The distance $d_{ij}$ between the vertices $i$ and $j$ is the sum of the weight matrices of the edges in the unique path from $i$ to $j$. In this article we establish a characterization for the trees in terms of rank of (matrix) weighted Laplacian matrix associated with it. Then we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the distance matr…

A Laplacian matrix is a square real matrix with nonpositive off-diagonal entries and zero row sums. As a matrix associated with a weighted directed graph, it generalizes the Laplacian matrix of an ordinary graph. A standardized Laplacian matrix is a Laplacian matrix with the absolute values of the off-diagonal entries not exceeding 1/n, where n is the order of the matrix. We study the spectra of Laplacian matrices and relations between Laplacian matrices and stochastic matrices. We prove that the standardized Laplacian matrices are semiconvergent. The multiplicities of 0 and 1 as the eigenvalu…
Graphs can be associated with a matrix according to some rule and we can find the spectrum of a graph with respect to that matrix. Two graphs are cospectral if they have the same spectrum. Constructions of cospectral graphs help us establish patterns about structural information not preserved by the spectrum. We generalize a construction for cospectral graphs previously given for the distance Laplacian matrix to a larger family of graphs. In addition, we show that with appropriate assumptions this generalized construction extends to the adjacency matrix, combinatorial Laplacian matrix, signles…
A matrix is called acyclic if replacing the diagonal entries with $0$, and the nonzero diagonal entries with $1$, yields the adjacency matrix of a forest. In this paper we show that null space and the rank of a acyclic matrix with $0$ in the diagonal is obtained from the null space and the rank of the adjacency matrix of the forest by multipliying by non-singular diagonal matrices. We combine these methods with an algorithm for finding a sparsest basis of the null space of a forest to provide an optimal time algorithm for finding a sparsest basis of the null space of acyclic matrices with $0$ …
The matrices of spanning rooted forests are studied as a tool for analysing the structure of digraphs and measuring their characteristics. The problems of revealing the basis bicomponents, measuring vertex proximity, and ranking from preference relations / sports competitions are considered. It is shown that the vertex accessibility measure based on spanning forests has a number of desirable properties. An interpretation for the normalized matrix of out-forests in terms of information dissemination is given. Keywords: Laplacian matrix, spanning forest, matrix-forest theorem, proximity measure,…
We define a graph Laplacian with vertex weights in addition to the more classical edge weights, which unifies the combinatorial Laplacian and the normalised Laplacian. Moreover, we give a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the weighted Laplacian characteristic polynomial in terms of weighted spanning forests and use this to prove a deletion-contraction relation. We prove various interlacing theorems relating to deletion and contraction, as well as to rectangular tilings, drawing on the work of Brooks, Smith, Stone and Tutte on square tilings. Additionally, we show that the we…
A unified approach to the determination of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of specific matrices associated with directed graphs is presented. Matrices studied include the distance matrix, distance Laplacian, and distance signless Laplacian, in addition to the adjacency matrix, Laplacian, and signless Laplacian. Various sums of Kronecker products of nonnegative matrices are introduced to model the Cartesian and lexicographic products of digraphs. The Jordan canonical form is applied extensively to the analysis of spectra and eigenvectors. The analysis shows that Cartesian products provide a method…
In this paper, we give the spectrum of a matrix by using the quotient matrix, then we apply this result to various matrices associated to a graph and a digraph, including adjacency matrix, (signless) Laplacian matrix, distance matrix, distance (signless) Laplacian matrix, to obtain some known and new results. Moreover, we propose some problems for further research.
In this paper, we introduce a generalization of corona of graphs. This construction generalizes the generalized corona of graphs (consequently, the corona of graphs), the cluster of graphs, the corona-vertex subdivision graph of graphs and the corona-edge subdivision graph of graphs. Further, it enables to get some more variants of corona of graphs as its particular cases. To determine the spectra of the adjacency, Laplacian and the signless Laplacian matrices of the above mentioned graphs, we define a notion namely, the coronal of a matrix constrained by an index set, which generalizes the co…
We study spanning diverging forests of a digraph and related matrices. It is shown that the normalized matrix of out forests of a digraph coincides with the transition matrix in a specific observation model for Markov chains related to the digraph. Expression are given for the Moore-Penrose generalized inverse and the group inverse of the Kirchhoff (Laplacian) matrix. These expressions involve the matrix of maximum out forest of the digraph. Every matrix of out forests with a fixed number of arcs and the normalized matrix of out forests are represented as polynomials in the Kirchhoff matrix; w…
Let $f(D(i, j), d_i, d_j)$ be a real function symmetric in $i$ and $j$ with the property that $f(d, (1+o(1))np, (1+o(1))np)=(1+o(1))f(d, np, np)$ for $d=1,2$. Let $G$ be a graph, $d_i$ denote the degree of a vertex $i$ of $G$ and $D(i, j)$ denote the distance between vertices $i$ and $j$ in $G$. In this paper, we define the $f$-weighted Laplacian matrix for random graphs in the Erd$\ddot{o}$s-R$\acute{e}$nyi random graph model $\mathcal{G}_{n, p}$, where $p\in (0, 1)$ is fixed. Four weighted Laplacian type energies: the weighted Laplacian energy $\mathscr{LE}_f(G)$, weighted signless Laplacian…
We give upper and lower bounds for the spectral radius of a nonnegative matrix by using its average 2-row sums, and characterize the equality cases if the matrix is irreducible. We also apply these bounds to various nonnegative matrices associated with a graph, including the adjacency matrix, the signless Laplacian matrix, the distance matrix, the distance signless Laplacian matrix, and the reciprocal distance matrix.
We present new short proofs of known spanning tree enumeration formulae for threshold and Ferrers graphs by showing that the Laplacian matrices of such graphs admit triangular rank-one perturbations. We then characterize the set of graphs whose Laplacian matrices admit triangular rank-one perturbations as the class of special 2-threshold graphs, introduced by Hung, Kloks, and Villaamil. Our work introduces (1) a new characterization of special 2-threshold graphs that generalizes the characterization of threshold graphs in terms of isolated and dominating vertices, and (2) a spanning tree enume…
We study the sets of inertias achieved by Laplacian matrices of weighted signed graphs. First we characterize signed graphs with a unique Laplacian inertia. Then we show that there is a sufficiently small perturbation of the nonzero weights on the edges of any connected weighted signed graph so that all eigenvalues of its Laplacian matrix are simple. Next, we give upper bounds on the number of possible Laplacian inertias for signed graphs with a fixed flexibility $τ$ (a combinatorial parameter of signed graphs), and show that these bounds are sharp for an infinite family of signed graphs. Fina…
In this paper, we compute asymptotics for the determinant of the combinatorial Laplacian on a sequence of $d$-dimensional orthotope square lattices as the number of vertices in each dimension grows at the same rate. It is related to the number of spanning trees by the well-known matrix tree theorem. Asymptotics for $2$ and $3$ component rooted spanning forests in these graphs are also derived. Moreover, we express the number of spanning trees in a $2$-dimensional square lattice in terms of the one in a $2$-dimensional discrete torus and also in the quartered Aztec diamond. As a consequence, we…
We present an elementary proof of a generalization of Kirchoff's matrix tree theorem to directed, weighted graphs. The proof is based on a specific factorization of the Laplacian matrices associated to the graphs, which only involves the two incidence matrices that capture the graph's topology. We also point out how this result can be used to calculate principal eigenvectors of the Laplacian matrices.

A mixed graph $M_{G}$ is the graph obtained from an unoriented simple graph $G$ by giving directions to some edges of $G$, where $G$ is often called the underlying graph of $M_{G}$. In this paper, we introduce two classes of incidence matrices of the second kind of $M_{G}$, and discuss the determinants of these two matrices for rootless mixed trees and unicyclic mixed graphs. Applying these results, we characterize the explicit expressions of various minors for Hermitian (quasi-)Laplacian matrix of the second kind of $M_{G}$. Moreover, we give two sufficient conditions that the absolute values…
It is known from the algebraic graph theory that if $L$ is the Laplacian matrix of some tree $G$ with a vertex degree sequence $\mathbf{d}=(d_1, ..., d_n)^\top$ and $D$ is its distance matrix, then $LD+2I=(2\cdot\mathbf{1}-\mathbf{d})\mathbf{1}^\top$, where $\mathbf{1}$ is an all-ones column vector. We prove that if this matrix identity holds for the Laplacian matrix of some graph $G$ with a degree sequence $\mathbf{d}$ and for some matrix $D$, then $G$ is essentially a tree, and $D$ is its distance matrix. This result immediately generalizes to weighted graphs. If the matrix $D$ is symmetric,…
Let $G$ be a simple graph. In 1986, Herbert Wilf asked what kind of graphs have an eigenvector with entries formed only by $\pm 1$? In this paper, we answer this question for the adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian matrix of a graph. Besides, we generalize the concept of an exact graph to the adjacency and signless Laplacian matrices. Infinity families of exact graphs for all those matrices are presented.
Let $A$ be an acyclic symmetric matrix of order $n$. There is a weighted forest $F$ whose adjacency matrix is $A$. In this paper, using some results on matching polynomials, we provide an explicit formula for eigenvectors of $A$.
