It has been an open problem to find the Moore-Penrose inverses of the incidence, Laplacian, and signless Laplacian matrices of families of graphs except trees and unicyclic graphs. Since the inverse formulas for an odd unicyclic graph and an even unicyclic graph are quite different, we consider wheel graphs as they are formed from odd or even cycles. In this article solve the open problem for wheel graphs. This work has an interesting connection to inverses of circulant matrices.
Let $\mathcal{L}(T,λ)=\sum_{k=0}^n(-1)^{k}c_{k}(T)λ^{n-k}$ be the characteristic polynomial of its Laplacian matrix of a tree $T$. This paper studied some properties of the generating function of the coefficients sequence $(c_0, \cdots, c_n)$ which are related with the matching polynomials of division tree of $T$. These results, in turn, are used to characterize all extremal trees having the minimum Laplacian coefficient generation function and the minimum incidence energy of trees with described maximum degree, respectively.
The main goal of the paper is to characterize new classes of multicone graphs which are determined by both adjacency and Laplacian spectra. A multicone graph is defined to be the join of a clique and a regular graph. A wheel graph obtained from the join of a complete graph on a vertex with a cycle. A question about when wheel graphs are determined by their adjacency spectra is still unsolved. So, any indication about the determinations of these graphs with respect to their adjacency spectra can be an interesting and important problem. In [Y. Zhang, X. Liu, and X. Yong: Which wheel graphs are d…
The incidence energy $\mathscr{IE}(G)$ of a graph $G$, defined as the sum of the singular values of the incidence matrix of a graph $G$, is a much studied quantity with well known applications in chemical physics. The Laplacian-energy-like invariant of $G$ is defined as the sum of square roots of the Laplacian eigenvalues. In this paper, we obtain the closed-form formulae expressing the incidence energy and the Laplacian-energy-like invariant of the Union Jack lattice. Moreover, the explicit asymptotic values of these quantities are calculated by utilizing the applications of analysis approach…
An oriented hypergraph is a hypergraph where each vertex-edge incidence is given a label of $+1$ or $-1$. The adjacency and Laplacian eigenvalues of an oriented hypergraph are studied. Eigenvalue bounds for both the adjacency and Laplacian matrices of an oriented hypergraph which depend on structural parameters of the oriented hypergraph are found. An oriented hypergraph and its incidence dual are shown to have the same nonzero Laplacian eigenvalues. A family of oriented hypergraphs with uniformally labeled incidences is also studied. This family provides a hypergraphic generalization of the s…
A wheel graph is a graph formed by connecting a single vertex to all vertices of a cycle. A graph is called wheel-free if it does not contain any wheel graph as a subgraph. In 2010, Nikiforov proposed a Brualdi-Solheid-Turán type problem: what is the maximum spectral radius of a graph of order $n$ that does not contain subgraphs of particular kind. In this paper, we study the Brualdi-Solheid-Turán type problem for wheel-free graphs, and we determine the maximum (signless Laplacian) spectral radius of a wheel-free graph of order $n$. Furthermore, we characterize the extremal graphs.
The signless Laplacian Q and signless edge-Laplacian S of a given graph may or may not be invertible. The Moore-Penrose inverses of Q and S are studied. In particular, using the incidence matrix, we find combinatorial formulas of the Moore- Penrose inverses of Q and S for trees. Also we present combinatorial formulas of the inverses of Q and S for odd unicyclic graphs.
Restrictions of incidence-preserving path maps produce an oriented hypergraphic All Minors Matrix-tree Theorems for Laplacian and adjacency matrices. The images of these maps produce a locally signed graphic, incidence generalization, of cycle covers and basic figures that correspond to incidence-k-forests. When restricted to bidirected graphs the natural partial ordering of maps results in disjoint signed boolean lattices whose minor calculations correspond to principal order ideals. As an application, (1) the determinant formula of a signed graphic Laplacian is reclaimed and shown to be dete…
For a simple graph $G$ and a real number $α$ $\left(α\neq 0,1\right) $ the graph invariant $s_α\left(G\right) $ is equal to the sum of powers of signless Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$. In this note, we present some new bounds on $s_α\left(G\right) $. As a result of these bounds, we also give some results on incidence energy.
The determinants of $\{\pm 1\}$-matrices are calculated by via the oriented hypergraphic Laplacian and summing over an incidence generalization of vertex cycle-covers. These cycle-covers are signed and partitioned into families based on their hyperedge containment. Every non-edge-monic family is shown to contribute a net value of $0$ to the Laplacian, while each edge-monic family is shown to sum to the absolute value of the determinant of the original incidence matrix. Simple symmetries are identified as well as their relationship to Hadamard's maximum determinant problem. Finally, the entries…
In this paper, we study energies associated with hypergraphs. More precisely, we obtain results for the incidence and the singless Laplacian energies of uniform hypergraphs. In particular, we obtain bounds for the incidence energy as functions of well known parameters, such as maximum degree, Zagreb index and spectral radius. We also relate the incidence and signless Laplacian energies of a hypergraph with the adjacency energies of its subdivision graph and line multigraph, respectively. In addition, we compute the signless Laplacian energy for the class of the power hypergraphs.
Let $G$ be a simple graph with $n$ vertices and let $$C(G;x)=\sum_{k=0}^n(-1)^{n-k}c(G,k)x^k$$ denote the Laplacian characteristic polynomial of $G$. Then if the size $|E(G)|$ is large compared to the maximum degree $Δ(G)$, Laplacian coefficients $c(G,k)$ are approximately normally distributed (by central and local limit theorems). We show that Laplacian coefficients of the paths, the cycles, the stars, the wheels and regular graphs of degree $d$ are approximately normally distributed respectively. We also point out that Laplacian coefficients of the complete graphs and the complete bipartite …
An oriented hypergraph is an oriented incidence structure that generalizes and unifies graph and hypergraph theoretic results by examining its locally signed graphic substructure. In this paper we obtain a combinatorial characterization of the coefficients of the characteristic polynomials of oriented hypergraphic Laplacian and adjacency matrices via a signed hypergraphic generalization of basic figures of graphs. Additionally, we provide bounds on the determinant and permanent of the Laplacian matrix, characterize the oriented hypergraphs in which the upper bound is sharp, and demonstrate tha…
An oriented hypergraph is an oriented incidence structure that allows for the generalization of graph theoretic concepts to integer matrices through its locally signed graphic substructure. The locally graphic behaviors are formalized in the subobject classifier of incidence hypergraphs. Moreover, the injective envelope is calculated and shown to contain the class of uniform hypergraphs -- providing a combinatorial framework for the entries of incidence matrices. A multivariable all-minors characteristic polynomial is obtained for both the determinant and permanent of the oriented hypergraphic…
For a given hypergraph, an orientation can be assigned to the vertex-edge incidences. This orientation is used to define the adjacency and Laplacian matrices. In addition to studying these matrices, several related structures are investigated including the incidence dual, the intersection graph (line graph), and the 2-section. A connection is then made between oriented hypergraphs and balanced incomplete block designs.
The $α$-Hermitian adjacency matrix $H_α$ of a mixed graph $X$ has been recently introduced. It is a generalization of the adjacency matrix of unoriented graphs. In this paper, we consider a special case of the complex number $α$. This enables us to define an incidence matrix of mixed graphs. Consequently, we define a generalization of line graphs as well as a generalization of the signless Laplacian adjacency matrix of graphs. We then study the spectral properties of the signless Laplacian adjacency matrix of a mixed graph. Lastly, we characterize when the signless Laplacian adjacency matrix o…
Let $G=(V,\overrightarrow{E})$ be a graph with some prescribed orientation for the edges and $Γ$ be an arbitrary group. If $f\in \mathrm{Inv}(Γ)$ be an anti-involution then the skew gain graph $Φ_f=(G,Γ,φ,f)$ is such that the skew gain function $φ:\overrightarrow{E}\rightarrow Γ$ satisfies $φ(\overrightarrow{vu})=f(φ(\overrightarrow{uv}))$. In this paper, we study two different types, Laplacian and $g$-Laplacian matrices for a skew gain graph where the skew gains are taken from the multiplicative group $F^\times$ of a field $F$ of characteristic zero. Defining incidence matrix, we also prove t…
For a simple signed graph $G$ with the adjacency matrix $A$ and net degree matrix $D^{\pm}$, the net Laplacian matrix is $L^{\pm}=D^{\pm}-A$. We introduce a new oriented incidence matrix $N^{\pm}$ which can keep track of the sign as well as the orientation of each edge of $G$. Also $L^{\pm}=N^{\pm}(N^{\pm})^T$. Using this decomposition, we find the numbers of positive and negative spanning trees of $G$ in terms of the principal minors of $L^{\pm}$ generalizing Matrix Tree Theorem for an unsigned graph. We present similar results for the signless net Laplacian matrix $Q^{\pm}=D^{\pm}+A$ along w…
A mixed graph $M_{G}$ is the graph obtained from an unoriented simple graph $G$ by giving directions to some edges of $G$, where $G$ is often called the underlying graph of $M_{G}$. In this paper, we introduce two classes of incidence matrices of the second kind of $M_{G}$, and discuss the determinants of these two matrices for rootless mixed trees and unicyclic mixed graphs. Applying these results, we characterize the explicit expressions of various minors for Hermitian (quasi-)Laplacian matrix of the second kind of $M_{G}$. Moreover, we give two sufficient conditions that the absolute values…
We present an elementary proof of a generalization of Kirchoff's matrix tree theorem to directed, weighted graphs. The proof is based on a specific factorization of the Laplacian matrices associated to the graphs, which only involves the two incidence matrices that capture the graph's topology. We also point out how this result can be used to calculate principal eigenvectors of the Laplacian matrices.
The Picard group of an undirected graph is a finitely generated abelian group, and the Jacobian is the torsion subgroup of the Picard group. These groups can be computed by using the Smith normal form of the Laplacian matrix of the graph or by using chip-firing games associated with the graph. One may consider its generalization to directed graphs based on the Laplacian matrix. We compute Picard groups and Jacobians for several classes of directed trees, cycles, wheel, and multipartite graphs.
An oriented hypergraph is a hypergraph where each vertex-edge incidence is given a label of $+1$ or $-1$. We define the adjacency, incidence and Laplacian matrices of an oriented hypergraph and study each of them. We extend several matrix results known for graphs and signed graphs to oriented hypergraphs. New matrix results that are not direct generalizations are also presented. Finally, we study a new family of matrices that contains walk information.
Given a simple graph $G$, its Laplacian-energy-like invariant $LEL(G)$ and incidence energy $IE(G)$ are the sum of square root of its all Laplacian eigenvalues and signless Laplacian eigenvalues, respectively. Applying the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality and the Ozeki inequality, along with its refined version, we obtain some improved bounds on $LEL$ and $IE$ of the $\mathcal {R}$-graph and $\mathcal{Q}$-graph for a regular graph. Theoretical analysis indicates that these results improve some known results. In addition, some new lower bounds on $LEL$ and $IE$ of the line graph of a semiregular graph…
A complex unit gain graph is a graph where each orientation of an edge is given a complex unit, which is the inverse of the complex unit assigned to the opposite orientation. We extend some fundamental concepts from spectral graph theory to complex unit gain graphs. We define the adjacency, incidence and Laplacian matrices, and study each of them. The main results of the paper are eigenvalue bounds for the adjacency and Laplacian matrices.
Biggs proposed the sandpile group of certain modified wheel graphs for cryptosystems relying on the difficulty of the discrete logarithm problem. Blackburn and independently Shokrieh showed that the discrete logarithm problem is efficiently solvable. We study Shokrieh's method in cases of graphs such that the sandpile group is not cyclic, namely the square cycle graphs and the wheel graphs. Knowing generators of the group or the form of the pseudoinverse of the Laplacian matrix makes the problem more vulnerable. We also consider the discrete logarithm problem in case of the so-called subdivide…
Let $f(D(i, j), d_i, d_j)$ be a real function symmetric in $i$ and $j$ with the property that $f(d, (1+o(1))np, (1+o(1))np)=(1+o(1))f(d, np, np)$ for $d=1,2$. Let $G$ be a graph, $d_i$ denote the degree of a vertex $i$ of $G$ and $D(i, j)$ denote the distance between vertices $i$ and $j$ in $G$. In this paper, we define the $f$-weighted Laplacian matrix for random graphs in the Erd$\ddot{o}$s-R$\acute{e}$nyi random graph model $\mathcal{G}_{n, p}$, where $p\in (0, 1)$ is fixed. Four weighted Laplacian type energies: the weighted Laplacian energy $\mathscr{LE}_f(G)$, weighted signless Laplacian…
I discuss the work of many authors on various matrices used to study signed graphs, concentrating on adjacency and incidence matrices and the closely related topics of Kirchhoff (`Laplacian') matrices, line graphs, and very strong regularity.
Let $G$ be a simple undirected $n$-vertex graph with the characteristic polynomial of its Laplacian matrix $L(G)$, $\det (λI - L (G))=\sum_{k = 0}^n (-1)^k c_k λ^{n - k}$. Laplacian--like energy of a graph is newly proposed graph invariant, defined as the sum of square roots of Laplacian eigenvalues. For bipartite graphs, the Laplacian--like energy coincides with the recently defined incidence energy $IE (G)$ of a graph. In [D. Stevanovi\' c, \textit{Laplacian--like energy of trees}, MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 61 (2009), 407--417.] the author introduced a partial ordering of graphs base…
Transactional data may be represented as a bipartite graph $G:=(L \cup R, E)$, where $L$ denotes agents, $R$ denotes objects visible to many agents, and an edge in $E$ denotes an interaction between an agent and an object. Unsupervised learning seeks to detect block structures in the adjacency matrix $Z$ between $L$ and $R$, thus grouping together sets of agents with similar object interactions. New results on quasirandom permutations suggest a non-parametric \textbf{four point test} to measure the amount of block structure in $G$, with respect to vertex orderings on $L$ and $R$. Take disjoint…
Distance matrices of some star like graphs are investigated in \cite{JAK}. These graphs are trees which are stars, wheel graphs, helm graphs and gear graphs. Except for gear graphs in the above list of star like graphs, there are precise formulas available in the literature to compute the inverse/Moore-Penrose inverse of their distance matrices. These formulas tell that if $D$ is the distance matrix of $G$, then $D^\dagger = -\frac{1}{2}L+uu'$, where $L$ is a Laplacian-like matrix which is positive semidefinite and all row sums equal to zero. The matrix $L$ and the vector $u$ depend only on th…
