The matrices of spanning rooted forests are studied as a tool for analysing the structure of digraphs and measuring their characteristics. The problems of revealing the basis bicomponents, measuring vertex proximity, and ranking from preference relations / sports competitions are considered. It is shown that the vertex accessibility measure based on spanning forests has a number of desirable properties. An interpretation for the normalized matrix of out-forests in terms of information dissemination is given.

We study spanning diverging forests of a digraph and related matrices. It is shown that the normalized matrix of out forests of a digraph coincides with the transition matrix in a specific observation model for Markov chains related to the digraph. Expression are given for the Moore-Penrose generalized inverse and the group inverse of the Kirchhoff (Laplacian) matrix. These expressions involve the matrix of maximum out forest of the digraph. Every matrix of out forests with a fixed number of arcs and the normalized matrix of out forests are represented as polynomials in the Kirchhoff matrix; w…
We study the maximum out forests of a (weighted) digraph and the matrix of maximum out forests. A maximum out forest of a digraph G is a spanning subgraph of G that consists of disjoint diverging trees and has the maximum possible number of arcs. If a digraph contains any out arborescences, then maximum out forests coincide with them. We provide a new proof to the Markov chain tree theorem saying that the matrix of Ces`aro limiting probabilities of an arbitrary stationary finite Markov chain coincides with the normalized matrix of maximum out forests of the weighted digraph that corresponds to…
In this paper, we study the complexity of two types of digraph packing problems: perfect out-forests problem and Steiner cycle packing problem. For the perfect out-forest problem, we prove that it is NP-hard to decide whether a given strong digraph contains a 1-perfect out-forest. However, when restricted to a semicomplete digraph $D$, the problem of deciding whether $D$ contains an $i$-perfect out-forest becomes polynomial-time solvable, where $i\in \{0,1\}$. We also prove that it is NP-hard to find a 0-perfect out-forest of maximum size in a connected acyclic digraph, and it is NP-hard to fi…
We determine the automorphism group of the zero-divisor digraph of the semiring of matrices over an antinegative commutative semiring with a finite number of zero-divisors.
A digraph D is the pattern of a matrix M when D has an arc ij if and only if the ij-th entry of M is nonzero. Study the relationship between unitary matrices and their patterns is motivated by works in quantum chaology and quantum computation. In this note, we prove that if a Cayley digraph is a line digraph then it is the pattern of a unitary matrix. We prove that for any finite group with two generators there exists a set of generators such that the Cayley digraph with respect to such a set is a line digraph and hence the pattern of a unitary matrix.
We show that the number of acyclic directed graphs with n labeled vertices is equal to the number of n X n (0,1)-matrices whose eigenvalues are positive real numbers.
We propose a quantum walk defined by digraphs (mixed graphs). This is like Grover walk that is perturbed by a certain complex-valued function defined by digraphs. The discriminant of this quantum walk is a matrix that is a certain normalization of generalized Hermitian adjacency matrices. Furthermore, we give definitions of the positive and negative supports of the transfer matrix, and clarify explicit formulas of their supports of the square. In addition, we give tables by computer on the identification of digraphs by their eigenvalues.
We define strongly chordal digraphs, which generalize strongly chordal graphs and chordal bipartite graphs, and are included in the class of chordal digraphs. They correspond to square 0,1 matrices that admit a simultaneous row and column permutation avoiding the Γ matrix. In general, it is not clear if these digraphs can be recognized in polynomial time, and we focus on symmetric digraphs (i.e., graphs with possible loops), tournaments with possible loops, and balanced digraphs. In each of these cases we give a polynomial-time recognition algorithm and a forbidden induced subgraph characteriz…
Divisible design digraphs are constructed from skew balanced generalized weighing matrices and generalized Hadamard matrices. Commutative and non-commutative association schemes are shown to be attached to the constructed divisible design digraphs.
Given a $\{ 0, 1, \ast \}$-matrix $M$, a minimal $M$-obstruction is a digraph $D$ such that $D$ is not $M$-partitionable, but every proper induced subdigraph of $D$ is. In this note we present a list of all the $M$-obstructions for every $2 \times 2$ matrix $M$. Notice that this note will be part of a larger paper, but we are archiving it now so we can cite the results.
In this article, we evaluate determinants of block hook matrices, which are block matrices consist of hook matrices. In particular, we deduce that the determinant of a block hook matrix factorizes nicely. In addition we give a combinatorial interpretation of the aforesaid factorization property by counting weighted paths in a suitable weighted digraph.
We associate a signed digraph with a list of matrices whose dimensions permit them to be multiplied, and whose product is square. Cycles in this graph have a parity, that is, they are either even (termed e-cycles) or odd (termed o-cycles). The absence of e-cycles in the graph is shown to imply that the matrix product is a P0-matrix, i.e., all of its principal minors are nonnegative. Conversely, the presence of an e-cycle is shown to imply that there exists a list of matrices associated with the graph whose product fails to be a P0-matrix. The results generalise a number of previous results rel…
In an earlier work, the author together with Guo [Hermitian adjacency matrix of digraphs and mixed graphs, J. Graph Theory 85 (2017) 217-248] introduced the Hermitian adjacency matrix of directed (and partially directed) graphs. However, it appears that a more natural Hermitian matrix exists, and it is the purpose of this note to bring this new Hermitian matrix to the attention of researchers in algebraic graph theory.
Distance matrices of graphs were introduced by Graham and Pollack in 1971 to study a problem in communications. Since then, there has been extensive research on the distance matrices of graphs -- a 2014 survey by Aouchiche and Hansen on spectra of distance matrices of graphs lists more than 150 references. In the last ten years, variants such as the distance Laplacian, the distance signless Laplacian, and the normalized distance Laplacian matrix of a graph have been studied. After a brief description of the early history of the distance matrix and its motivating problem, this survey focuses on…
Natural join of $di-bigraphs$ that is directed biparted graphs and their corresponding adjacency matrices is defined and then applied to investigate the so called cobweb posets and their $Hasse$ digraphs called $KoDAGs$. $KoDAGs$ are special orderable directed acyclic graphs which are cover relation digraphs of cobweb posets introduced by the author few years ago. $KoDAGs$ appear to be distinguished family of $Ferrers$ digraphs which are natural join of a corresponding ordering chain of one direction directed cliques called $di-bicliques$. These digraphs serve to represent faithfully correspon…
A unified approach to the determination of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of specific matrices associated with directed graphs is presented. Matrices studied include the distance matrix, distance Laplacian, and distance signless Laplacian, in addition to the adjacency matrix, Laplacian, and signless Laplacian. Various sums of Kronecker products of nonnegative matrices are introduced to model the Cartesian and lexicographic products of digraphs. The Jordan canonical form is applied extensively to the analysis of spectra and eigenvectors. The analysis shows that Cartesian products provide a method…
In this paper, we consider the local bases of primitive nonpowerful sign pattern matrices, show that there are "gaps" in the local base set and characterize some sign pattern matrices with given local bases.
We study the matrices Q_k of in-forests of a weighted digraph G and their connections with the Laplacian matrix L of G. The (i,j) entry of Q_k is the total weight of spanning converging forests (in-forests) with k arcs such that i belongs to a tree rooted at j. The forest matrices, Q_k, can be calculated recursively and expressed by polynomials in the Laplacian matrix; they provide representations for the generalized inverses, the powers, and some eigenvectors of L. The normalized in-forest matrices are row stochastic; the normalized matrix of maximum in-forests is the eigenprojection of the L…
The support of a matrix M is the (0,1)-matrix with ij-th entry equal to 1 if the ij-th entry of M is non-zero, and equal to 0, otherwise. The digraph whose adjacency matrix is the support of M is said to be the digraph of M. This paper observes some structural properties of digraphs of unitary matrices.
We prove that every point-determining digraph $D$ contains a vertex $v$ such that $D-v$ is also point determining. We apply this result to show that for any $\{0,1\}$-matrix $M$, with $k$ diagonal zeros and $\ell$ diagonal ones, the size of a minimal $M$-obstruction is at most $(k+1)(\ell+1)$. This extends the results of Sumner, and of Feder and Hell, from undirected graphs and symmetric matrices to digraphs and general matrices.
A set $S\subseteq V$ is called an {\em $q^+$-set} ({\em $q^-$-set}, respectively) if $S$ has at least two vertices and, for every $u\in S$, there exists $v\in S, v\neq u$ such that $N^+(u)\cap N^+(v)\neq \emptyset$ ($N^-(u)\cap N^-(v)\neq \emptyset$, respectively). A digraph $D$ is called {\em s-quadrangular} if, for every $q^+$-set $S$, we have $|\cup \{N^+(u)\cap N^+(v): u\neq v, u,v\in S\}|\ge |S|$ and, for every $q^-$-set $S$, we have $|\cup \{N^-(u)\cap N^-(v): u,v\in S)\}\ge |S|$. We conjecture that every strong s-quadrangular digraph has a Hamilton cycle and provide some support for thi…

We prove that the (non-symmetric) adjacency matrix of a uniform random $d$-regular directed graph on $n$ vertices is asymptotically almost surely invertible, assuming $\min(d,n-d)\ge C\log^2n$ for a sufficiently large constant $C>0$. The proof makes use of a coupling of random regular digraphs formed by "shuffling" the neighborhood of a pair of vertices, as well as concentration results for the distribution of edges recently obtained by the author (arXiv:1410.5595). We also apply our general approach to prove a.a.s.\ invertibility of Hadamard products $Σ\circ Ξ$, where $Ξ$ is a matrix of iid u…

The principal permanent rank characteristic sequence is a binary sequence $r_0 r_1 \ldots r_n$ where $r_k = 1$ if there exists a principal square submatrix of size $k$ with nonzero permanent and $r_k = 0$ otherwise, and $r_0 = 1$ if there is a zero diagonal entry. A characterization is provided for all principal permanent rank sequences obtainable by the family of nonnegative matrices as well as the family of nonnegative symmetric matrices. Constructions for all realizable sequences are provided. Results for skew-symmetric matrices are also included.
Let $G$ be a connected graph with $V(G)=\{1,\dotsc,n\}$. Then the resistance distance between any two vertices $i$ and $j$ is given by $r_{ij}:=l_{ii}^† + l_{jj}^†-2 l_{ij}^†$, where $l_{ij}^†$ is the $(i,j)^{\rm th}$ entry of the Moore-Penrose inverse of the Laplacian matrix of $G$. For the resistance matrix $R:=[r_{ij}]$, there is an elegant formula to compute the inverse of $R$. This says that \[R^{-1}=-\frac{1}{2}L + \frac{1}{τ' R τ} ττ', \] where \[τ:=(τ_1,\dotsc,τ_n)'~~\mbox{and}~~ τ_{i}:=2- \sum_{\{j \in V(G):(i,j) \in E(G)\}} r_{ij}~~~i=1,\dotsc,n. \] A far reaching generalization of t…
We show that the adjacency matrix M of the line digraph of a d-regular digraph D on n vertices can be written as M=AB, where the matrix A is the Kronecker product of the all-ones matrix of dimension d with the identity matrix of dimension n and the matrix B is the direct sum of the adjacency matrices of the factors in a dicycle factorization of D.
The cycle space of a graph corresponds to the kernel of an incidence matrix. We investigate an analogous subspace for digraphs. In the case of digraphs of graphs, where every edge is replaced by two oppositely directed arcs, we give a combinatorial description of a basis of such a space. We are motivated by a connection to the transition matrices of discrete-time quantum walks.
We consider matrices with entries that are polynomials in $q$ arising from natural $q$-generalisations of two well-known formulas that count: forests on $n$ vertices with $k$ components; and trees on $n+1$ vertices where $k$ children of the root are smaller than the root. We give a combinatorial interpretation of the corresponding statistic on forests and trees and show, via the construction of various planar networks and the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot lemma, that these matrices are coefficientwise totally positive. We also exhibit generalisations of the entries of these matrices to polynomials …
Let ${\mathcal D}_{n,d}$ be the set of all $d$-regular directed graphs on $n$ vertices. Let $G$ be a graph chosen uniformly at random from ${\mathcal D}_{n,d}$ and $M$ be its adjacency matrix. We show that $M$ is invertible with probability at least $1-C\ln^{3} d/\sqrt{d}$ for $C\leq d\leq cn/\ln^2 n$, where $c, C$ are positive absolute constants. To this end, we establish a few properties of $d$-regular directed graphs. One of them, a Littlewood-Offord type anti-concentration property, is of independent interest. Let $J$ be a subset of vertices of $G$ with $|J|\approx n/d$. Let $δ_i$ be the i…
A digraph is eulerian if it is connected and every vertex has its in-degree equal to its out-degree. Having a spanning eulerian subdigraph is thus a weakening of having a hamiltonian cycle. In this paper, we first characterize the pairs $(D,a)$ of a semicomplete digraph $D$ and an arc $a$ such that $D$ has a spanning eulerian subdigraph containing $a$. In particular, we show that if $D$ is $2$-arc-strong, then every arc is contained in a spanning eulerian subdigraph. We then characterize the pairs $(D,a)$ of a semicomplete digraph $D$ and an arc $a$ such that $D$ has a spanning eulerian subdig…
An antimagic labeling of a digraph $D$ with $n$ vertices and $m$ arcs is a bijection from the set of arcs of $D$ to $\{1,2,\cdots,m\}$ such that all $n$ oriented vertex-sums are pairwise distinct, where the oriented vertex-sum of a vertex is the sum of labels of all arcs entering that vertex minus the sum of labels of all arcs leaving it. A graph $G$ admits an antimagic orientation if $G$ has an orientation $D$ such that $D$ has an antimagic labeling. Hefetz, M{ü}tze and Schwartz conjectured every connected graph admits an antimagic orientation. In this paper, we support this conjecture by pro…
A Laplacian matrix is a square real matrix with nonpositive off-diagonal entries and zero row sums. As a matrix associated with a weighted directed graph, it generalizes the Laplacian matrix of an ordinary graph. A standardized Laplacian matrix is a Laplacian matrix with the absolute values of the off-diagonal entries not exceeding 1/n, where n is the order of the matrix. We study the spectra of Laplacian matrices and relations between Laplacian matrices and stochastic matrices. We prove that the standardized Laplacian matrices are semiconvergent. The multiplicities of 0 and 1 as the eigenvalu…
In this paper we study irreducible representations and symbolic Rees algebras of monomial ideals. Then we examine edge ideals associated to vertex-weighted oriented graphs. These are digraphs having no oriented cycles of length two with weights on the vertices. For a monomial ideal with no embedded primes we classify the normality of its symbolic Rees algebra in terms of its primary components. If the primary components of a monomial ideal are normal, we present a simple procedure to compute its symbolic Rees algebra using Hilbert bases, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equ…
Distance well-defined graphs consist of connected undirected graphs, strongly connected directed graphs and strongly connected mixed graphs. Let $G$ be a distance well-defined graph, and let ${\sf D}(G)$ be the distance matrix of $G$. Graham, Hoffman and Hosoya [3] showed a very attractive theorem, expressing the determinant of ${\sf D}(G)$ explicitly as a function of blocks of $G$. In this paper, we study the inverse of ${\sf D}(G)$ and get an analogous theory, expressing the inverse of ${\sf D}(G)$ through the inverses of distance matrices of blocks of $G$ (see Theorem 3.3) by the theory of …
In this paper, we give the spectrum of a matrix by using the quotient matrix, then we apply this result to various matrices associated to a graph and a digraph, including adjacency matrix, (signless) Laplacian matrix, distance matrix, distance (signless) Laplacian matrix, to obtain some known and new results. Moreover, we propose some problems for further research.
The traditional adjacency matrix of a mixed graph is not symmetric in general, hence its eigenvalues may be not real. To overcome this obstacle, several authors have recently defined and studied various Hermitian adjacency matrices of digraphs or mixed graphs. In this work we unify previous work and offer a new perspective on the subject by introducing the concept of monographs. Moreover, we consider questions of cospectrality.
The $girth$ of a primitive Boolean matrix is defined to be the $girth$ of its associated digraph. In this paper, among all primitive Boolean matrices of order $n$, the primitive exponents of those of girth $g$ are considered. For the primitive matrices of both order $n\geq 10$ and girth $g>\frac{n^{2}-4n}{4(n-3)}$, the matrices with primitive exponents in $[2n-2 +(g- 1)(n-3), n+g(n-2)]$ are completely characterized.
We use the \emph{unit-graphs} and the \emph{special unit-digraphs} on matrix rings to show that every $n \times n$ nonzero matrix over $\Bbb F_q$ can be written as a sum of two $\operatorname{SL}_n$-matrices when $n>1$. We compute the eigenvalues of these graphs in terms of Kloosterman sums and study their spectral properties; and prove that if $X$ is a subset of $\operatorname{Mat}_2 (\Bbb F_q)$ with size $|X| > \frac{2 q^3 \sqrt{q}}{q - 1}$, then $X$ contains at least two distinct matrices whose difference has determinant $α$ for any $α\in \Bbb F_q^{\ast}$. Using this result we also prove a …
We explore a paradigm which ties together seemingly disparate areas in number theory, additive combinatorics, and geometric combinatorics including the classical Waring problem, the Furstenberg-Sárközy theorem on squares in sets of integers with positive density, and the study of triangles (also called $2$-simplices) in finite fields. Among other results we show that if $\mathbb{F}_q$ is the finite field of odd order $q$, then every matrix in $Mat_d(\mathbb{F}_q), d \geq 2$ is the sum of a certain (finite) number of orthogonal matrices, this number depending only on $d$, the size of the matrix…
We prove that if a $7\times 7$ matrix is potentially stable, then it has at least 11 non-zero entries. The results for $n\times n$ matrix with $n$ up to 6 are known previously. We prove the result by making a list of possible associated digraphs with at most 10 edges, and then use algebraic conditions to show all of these digraphs or matrices cannot be potentially stable. In relation to this, we also determine the minimum number of edges in a strongly connected digraph depending on its circumference.
A matrix is called acyclic if replacing the diagonal entries with $0$, and the nonzero diagonal entries with $1$, yields the adjacency matrix of a forest. In this paper we show that null space and the rank of a acyclic matrix with $0$ in the diagonal is obtained from the null space and the rank of the adjacency matrix of the forest by multipliying by non-singular diagonal matrices. We combine these methods with an algorithm for finding a sparsest basis of the null space of a forest to provide an optimal time algorithm for finding a sparsest basis of the null space of acyclic matrices with $0$ …
