A set $S\subseteq V$ is called an {\em $q^+$-set} ({\em $q^-$-set}, respectively) if $S$ has at least two vertices and, for every $u\in S$, there exists $v\in S, v\neq u$ such that $N^+(u)\cap N^+(v)\neq \emptyset$ ($N^-(u)\cap N^-(v)\neq \emptyset$, respectively). A digraph $D$ is called {\em s-quadrangular} if, for every $q^+$-set $S$, we have $|\cup \{N^+(u)\cap N^+(v): u\neq v, u,v\in S\}|\ge |S|$ and, for every $q^-$-set $S$, we have $|\cup \{N^-(u)\cap N^-(v): u,v\in S)\}\ge |S|$. We conjecture that every strong s-quadrangular digraph has a Hamilton cycle and provide some support for this conjecture.
A digraph D is the pattern of a matrix M when D has an arc ij if and only if the ij-th entry of M is nonzero. Study the relationship between unitary matrices and their patterns is motivated by works in quantum chaology and quantum computation. In this note, we prove that if a Cayley digraph is a line digraph then it is the pattern of a unitary matrix. We prove that for any finite group with two generators there exists a set of generators such that the Cayley digraph with respect to such a set is a line digraph and hence the pattern of a unitary matrix.
Given a matrix M of size n, a digraph D on n vertices is said to be the digraph of M, when M_{ij} is different from 0 if and only if (v_{i},v_{j}) is an arc of D. We give a necessary condition, called strong quadrangularity, for a digraph to be the digraph of a unitary matrix. With the use of such a condition, we show that a line digraph, LD, is the digraph of a unitary matrix if and only if D is Eulerian. It follows that, if D is strongly connected and LD is the digraph of a unitary matrix then LD is Hamiltonian. We conclude with some elementary observations. Among the motivations of this pap…
The support of a matrix M is the (0,1)-matrix with ij-th entry equal to 1 if the ij-th entry of M is non-zero, and equal to 0, otherwise. The digraph whose adjacency matrix is the support of M is said to be the digraph of M. This paper observes some structural properties of digraphs of unitary matrices.
This paper improves algorithms given in math.CO/0012036. Although the graph (digraph) becomes non-random as the algorithm proceeds, the probability for success stays the same. We also give examples.
We construct infinitely many connected, circulant digraphs of outdegree three that have no hamiltonian circuit. All of our examples have an even number of vertices, and our examples are of two types: either every vertex in the digraph is adjacent to two diametrically opposite vertices, or every vertex is adjacent to the vertex diametrically opposite to itself.
Suppose G is a nilpotent, finite group. We show that if {a,b} is any 2-element generating set of G, then the corresponding Cayley digraph Cay(G;a,b) has a hamiltonian path. This implies there is a hamiltonian path in every connected Cayley graph on G that has valence at most 4.
C. Thomassen in \cite{[11]} suggested (see also \cite{[2]}, J. C.Bermond, C. Thomassen, Cycles in Digraphs - A survey, J. Graph Theory 5 (1981) 1-43, Conjectures 1.6.7 and 1.6.8) the following conjectures : 1. Every 3-strongly connected digraph of order $n$ and with minimum degree at least $n+1$ is strongly Hamiltonian-connected. 2. Let $D$ be a 4-strongly connected digraph of order $n$ such that the sum of the degrees of any pair of non-adjacent vertices is at least $2n+1$. Then $D$ is strongly Hamiltonian-connected. We disprove Conjecture 1 and prove two results which provide some support fo…
Given a digraph D, the minimum semi-degree of D is the minimum of its minimum indegree and its minimum outdegree. D is k-ordered Hamiltonian if for every ordered sequence of k distinct vertices there is a directed Hamilton cycle which encounters these vertices in this order. Our main result is that every digraph D of sufficiently large order n with minimum semi-degree at least (n+k)/2 -1 is k-ordered Hamiltonian. The bound on the minimum semi-degree is best possible. An undirected version of this result was proved earlier by Kierstead, Sárközy and Selkow.
In 1992, Manoussakis conjectured that a strongly 2-connected digraph $D$ on $n$ vertices is hamiltonian if for every two distinct pairs of independent vertices $x,y$ and $w,z$ we have $d(x)+d(y)+d(w)+d(z)\geq 4n-3$. In this note we show that $D$ has a Hamilton path, which gives an affirmative evidence supporting this conjecture.
Let D be the circulant digraph with n vertices and connection set {2,3,c}. (Assume D is loopless and has outdegree 3.) Work of S.C.Locke and D.Witte implies that if n is a multiple of 6, c is either (n/2) + 2 or (n/2) + 3, and c is even, then D does not have a hamiltonian cycle. For all other cases, we construct a hamiltonian cycle in D.
The symmetric group is generated by σ = (1 2 ... n) and τ = (1 2). We answer an open problem of Nijenhuis and Wilf by constructing a Hamilton path in the directed Cayley graph for all n, and a Hamilton cycle for odd n.
We show that for each η>0 every digraph G of sufficiently large order n is Hamiltonian if its out- and indegree sequences d^+_1\le ... \le d^+_n and d^- _1 \le ... \le d^-_n satisfy (i) d^+_i \geq i+ ηn or d^-_{n-i- ηn} \geq n-i and (ii) d^-_i \geq i+ ηn or d^+_{n-i- ηn} \geq n-i for all i < n/2. This gives an approximate solution to a problem of Nash-Williams concerning a digraph analogue of Chvátal's theorem. In fact, we prove the stronger result that such digraphs G are pancyclic.
Let $n$ be sufficiently large and suppose that $G$ is a digraph on $n$ vertices where every vertex has in- and outdegree at least $n/2$. We show that $G$ contains every orientation of a Hamilton cycle except, possibly, the antidirected one. The antidirected case was settled by DeBiasio and Molla, where the threshold is $n/2+1$. Our result is best possible and improves on an approximate result by Häggkvist and Thomason.
We prove packing and counting theorems for arbitrarily oriented Hamilton cycles in ${\cal D}(n,p)$ for nearly optimal $p$ (up to a $\log ^cn$ factor). In particular, we show that given $t = (1-o(1))np$ Hamilton cycles $C_1,\ldots ,C_{t}$, each of which is oriented arbitrarily, a digraph $D \sim {\cal D}(n,p)$ w.h.p. contains edge disjoint copies of $C_1,\ldots ,C_t$, provided $p=ω(\log ^3 n/n)$. We also show that given an arbitrarily oriented $n$-vertex cycle $C$, a random digraph $D \sim {\cal D}(n,p)$ w.h.p. contains $(1\pm o(1))n!p^n$ copies of $C$, provided $p \geq \log ^{1 + o(1)}n/n$.
We show that every sufficiently large r-regular digraph G which has linear degree and is a robust outexpander has an approximate decomposition into edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles, i.e. G contains a set of r-o(r) edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles. Here G is a robust outexpander if for every set S which is not too small and not too large, the `robust' outneighbourhood of S is a little larger than S. This generalises a result of Kühn, Osthus and Treglown on approximate Hamilton decompositions of dense regular oriented graphs. It also generalises a result of Frieze and Krivelevich on approximate Hamilt…
The notion of robust expansion has played a central role in the solution of several conjectures involving the packing of Hamilton cycles in graphs and directed graphs. These and other results usually rely on the fact that every robustly expanding (di)graph with suitably large minimum degree contains a Hamilton cycle. Previous proofs of this require Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma and so this fact can only be applied to dense, sufficiently large robust expanders. We give a proof that does not use the Regularity Lemma and, indeed, we can apply our result to suitable sparse robustly expanding digrap…
In 1972, Woodall raised the following Ore type condition for directed Hamilton cycles in digraphs: Let $D$ be a digraph. If for every vertex pair $u$ and $v$, where there is no arc from $u$ to $v$, we have $d^+u)+d^-(v)\geq |D|$, then $D$ has a directed Hamilton cycle. By a correspondence between bipartite graphs and digraphs, the above result is equivalent to the following result of Las Vergnas: Let $G = (B,W)$ be a balanced bipartite graph. If for any $b \in B$ and $w \in W$, where $b$ and $w$ are nonadjacent, we have $d(w)+d(b) \geq |G|/2 + 1$, then every perfect matching of $G$ is containe…
Let $D$ be a strongly connected directed graph of order $n\geq 4$ which satisfies the following condition (*): for every pair of non-adjacent vertices $x, y$ with a common in-neighbour $d(x)+d(y)\geq 2n-1$ and $min \{ d(x), d(y)\}\geq n-1$. In \cite{[2]} (J. of Graph Theory 22 (2) (1996) 181-187)) J. Bang-Jensen, G. Gutin and H. Li proved that $D$ is Hamiltonian. In [9] it was shown that if $D$ satisfies the condition (*) and the minimum semi-degree of $D$ at least two, then either $D$ contains a pre-Hamiltonian cycle (i.e., a cycle of length $n-1$) or $n$ is even and $D$ is isomorphic to the …
We consider Hamilton cycles in the random digraph $D_{n,m}$ where the orientation of edges follows a pattern other than the trivial orientation in which the edges are oriented in the same direction as we traverse the cycle. We show that if the orientation forms a periodic pattern, other than the trivial pattern, then approximately half the usual $n\log n$ edges are needed to guarantee the existence of such Hamilton cycles a.a.s.

Let $D$ be a strongly connected directed graph of order $n\geq 4$. In \cite{[14]} (J. of Graph Theory, Vol.16, No. 5, 51-59, 1992) Y. Manoussakis proved the following theorem: Suppose that $D$ satisfies the following condition for every triple $x,y,z$ of vertices such that $x$ and $y$ are non-adjacent: If there is no arc from $x$ to $z$, then $d(x)+d(y)+d^+(x)+d^-(z)\geq 3n-2$. If there is no arc from $z$ to $x$, then $d(x)+d(y)+d^-(x)+d^+(z)\geq 3n-2$. Then $D$ is Hamiltonian. In this paper we show that: If $D$ satisfies the condition of Manoussakis' theorem, then $D$ contains a pre-Hamiltoni…
We prove two sharp sufficient conditions for hamiltonian cycles in balanced bipartite directed graph. Let $D$ be a strongly connected balanced bipartite directed graph of order $2a$. Let $x,y$ be distinct vertices in $D$. $\{x,y\}$ dominates a vertex $z$ if $x\rightarrow z$ and $y\rightarrow z$; in this case, we call the pair $\{x,y\}$ dominating. (i) {\it If $a\geq 4$ and $max \{d(x), d(y)\}\geq 2a-1$ for every dominating pair of vertices $\{x,y\}$, then either $D$ is hamiltonian or $D$ is isomorphic to one exceptional digraph of order eight.} (ii) {\it If $a\geq 5$ and $d(x)+d(y)\geq 4a-3$ f…
Construction of graphs with equal eigenvalues (co-spectral graphs) is an interesting problem in spectral graph theory. Seidel switching is a well-known method for generating co-spectral graphs. From a matrix theoretic point of view, Seidel switching is a combined action of a number of unitary operations on graphs. Recent works [1] and [2] have shown significant connections between graph and quantum information theories. Corresponding to Laplacian matrices of any graph there are quantum states useful in quantum computing. From this point of view, graph theoretical problems are meaningful in the…
Let $D$ be a strongly connected balanced bipartite directed graph of order $2a\geq 10$ other than a directed cycle. Let $x,y$ be distinct vertices in $D$. $\{x,y\}$ dominates a vertex $z$ if $x\rightarrow z$ and $y\rightarrow z$; in this case, we call the pair $\{x,y\}$ dominating. In this paper we prove: If $ max\{d(x), d(y)\}\geq 2a-2$ for every dominating pair of vertices $\{x,y\}$, then $D$ contains cycles of all lengths $2,4, \ldots , 2a-2$ or $D$ is isomorphic to a certain digraph of order ten which we specify.
Let $D$ be a strong digraph on $n\geq 4$ vertices. In [3, Discrete Applied Math., 95 (1999) 77-87)], J. Bang-Jensen, Y. Guo and A. Yeo proved the following theorem: if (*) $d(x)+d(y)\geq 2n-1$ and $min \{d^+(x)+ d^-(y),d^-(x)+ d^+(y)\}\geq n-1$ for every pair of non-adjacent vertices $x, y$ with a common in-neighbour or a common out-neighbour, then $D$ is hamiltonian. In this note we show that: if $D$ is not directed cycle and satisfies the condition (*), then $D$ contains a cycle of length $n-1$ or $n-2$.
The paper is concerned with directed versions of Posa's theorem and Chvatal's theorem on Hamilton cycles in graphs. We show that for each a>0, every digraph G of sufficiently large order n whose outdegree and indegree sequences d_1^+ \leq ... \leq d_n^+ and d_1^- \leq >... \leq d_n^- satisfy d_i^+, d_i^- \geq min{i + a n, n/2} is Hamiltonian. In fact, we can weaken these assumptions to (i) d_i^+ \geq min{i + a n, n/2} or d^-_{n - i - a n} \geq n-i; (ii) d_i^- \geq min{i + a n, n/2} or d^+_{n - i - a n} \geq n-i; and still deduce that G is Hamiltonian. This provides an approximate version of a …

This MSci thesis surveys results in extremal graph theory, in particular relating to Hamilton cycles. Szeméredi's Regularity Lemma plays a central role. We also investigate the robust outexpansion property for digraphs. Kelly showed that every sufficiently large oriented graph on $n$ vertices with minimum in- and outdegree at least $3n/8 +o(n)$ contains any orientation of a Hamilton cycle. We use Kelly's arguments to extend his result to any robustly expanding digraph of linear degree.
Let $G$ be a strongly connected directed graph of order $p\geq 3$. In this paper, we show that if $d(x)+d(y)\geq 2p-2$ (respectively, $d(x)+d(y)\geq 2p-1$) for every pair of non-adjacent vertices $x, y$, then $G$ contains a Hamiltonian path (with only a few exceptional cases that can be clearly characterized) in which the initial vertex dominates the terminal vertex (respectively, $G$ contains two distinct verteces $x$ and $y$ such that there are two internally disjoint $(x,y)$-paths of lengths $p-2$ and $2$).
We prove a sharp Ore-type criterion for hamiltonicity of balanced bipartite digraphs: A bipartite digraph D, with colour classes of cardinality N, is hamiltonian if, for every pair of vertices u and v from opposite colour classes of D such that the arc uv is not in D, the sum of the outdegree of u and the indegree of v is greater than or equal to N+2.
R. Wang (Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 19(3), 2017) proposed the following problem. \textbf{Problem.} Let $D$ be a strongly connected balanced bipartite directed graph of order $2a\geq 8$. Suppose that $d(x)\geq 2a-k$, $ d(y)\geq a+k$ or $d(y)\geq 2a-k$, $ d(x)\geq a+k$ for every pair of vertices $x,y$ with a common out-neighbour, where $2 \leq k\leq a/2$. Is $D$ Hamiltonian? In this paper, we prove that if a digraph $D$ satisfies the conditions of this problem, then (i) $D$ contains a cycle factor, (ii) for every vertex $x\in V(D)$ there exists a vertex $y\in V(D…
Let $D$ be a strongly connected directed graph of order $n\geq 4$ vertices which satisfies the following condition for every triple $x,y,z$ of vertices such that $x$ and $y$ are non-adjacent: If there is no arc from $x$ to $z$, then $d(x)+d(y)+d^+(x)+d^-(z)\geq 3n-2$. We give several results showing that different discrete structures typically gain certain spanning substructures (in particular, Hamilton cycles) after a modest random perturbation. First, we prove that adding linearly many random edges to a dense k-uniform hypergraph ensures the (asymptotically almost sure) existence of a perfect matching or a loose Hamilton cycle. The proof involves an interesting application of Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma, which might be independently useful. We next prove that digraphs with certain strong expansion properties are pancyclic, and use this to show that addin…
C. Thomassen (Proc. London Math. Soc. (3) 42 (1981), 231-251) gave a characterization of strongly connected non-Hamiltonian digraphs of order $p\geq 3$ with minimum degree $p-1$. In this paper we give an analogous characterization of strongly connected non-Hamiltonian digraphs with Meyniel-type condition (the sum of degrees of every pair of non-adjacent vertices $x$ and $y$ at least $2p-2$). Moreover, we prove that such digraphs $D$ contain cycles of all lengths $k$, for $2\leq k\leq m$, where $m$ is the length of a longest cycle in $D$.
A digraph $D=(V,A)$ of order $n\geq 3$ is pancyclic, whenever $D$ contains a directed cycle of length $k$ for each $k\in\{3,...,n\}$; and D is vertex-pancyclic iff, for each vertex $v\in V$ and each $k\in \{3,...,n\}$, $D$ contains a directed cycle of length $k$ passing through $v$. Let $D_1$, $D_2$,..., $D_k$ be a collection of pairwise vertex disjoint digraphs. The generalized sum (g.s.) of $D_1$, $D_2$,..., $D_k$, denoted by $\oplus_{i=1}^k D_i$ or $D_1\oplus D_2 \oplus \cdots \oplus D_k$, is the set of all digraphs D satisfying: (i) $V(D)=\bigcup_{i=1}^k V(D_i)$, (ii) $D\langle V(D_i) \ran…
A generalized de Bruijn digraph generalizes a de Bruijn digraph to the case where the number of vertices need not be a pure power of an integer. Hamiltonian cycles in these digraphs thus generalize regular de~Bruijn cycles, and we will thus refer to them simply as de Bruijn cycles. We define the cross-join to be the graph with all de Bruijn cycles as vertices, there is an edge between two of these vertices if one can be obtained from the other via a cross-join operation. We show that the cross-join graph is connected. This in particular means that any regular de Bruijn cycle can be cross-joine…

A digraph is eulerian if it is connected and every vertex has its in-degree equal to its out-degree. Having a spanning eulerian subdigraph is thus a weakening of having a hamiltonian cycle. In this paper, we first characterize the pairs $(D,a)$ of a semicomplete digraph $D$ and an arc $a$ such that $D$ has a spanning eulerian subdigraph containing $a$. In particular, we show that if $D$ is $2$-arc-strong, then every arc is contained in a spanning eulerian subdigraph. We then characterize the pairs $(D,a)$ of a semicomplete digraph $D$ and an arc $a$ such that $D$ has a spanning eulerian subdig…
