We present new short proofs of known spanning tree enumeration formulae for threshold and Ferrers graphs by showing that the Laplacian matrices of such graphs admit triangular rank-one perturbations. We then characterize the set of graphs whose Laplacian matrices admit triangular rank-one perturbations as the class of special 2-threshold graphs, introduced by Hung, Kloks, and Villaamil. Our work introduces (1) a new characterization of special 2-threshold graphs that generalizes the characterization of threshold graphs in terms of isolated and dominating vertices, and (2) a spanning tree enumeration formula for special 2-threshold graphs that reduces to the aforementioned formulae for threshold and Ferrers graphs. We consider both unweighted and weighted spanning tree enumeration.
We deal with unweighted and weighted enumerations of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with side lengths $a,b+m,c,a+m,b,c+m$, where an equilateral triangle of side length $m$ has been removed from the center. We give closed formulas for the plain enumeration and for a certain $(-1)$-enumeration of these lozenge tilings. In the case that $a=b=c$, we also provide closed formulas for certain weighted enumerations of those lozenge tilings that are cyclically symmetric. For $m=0$, the latter formulas specialize to statements about weighted enumerations of cyclically symmetric plane partitions. One such …
In this paper, we consider various classes of polyiamonds that are animals residing on the triangular lattice. By careful analyses through certain layer-by-layer decompositions and cell pruning/growing arguments, we derive explicit forms for the generating functions of the number of nonempty translation-invariant baryiamonds (bargraphs in the triangular lattice), column-convex polyiamonds, and convex polyiamonds with respect to their perimeter. In particular, we show that the number of (A) baryiamonds of perimeter $n$ is asymptotically $$\frac{(ξ+1)^2\sqrt{ξ^4+ξ^3-2ξ+1}}{2\sqrt{πn^3}}ξ^{-n-2},…
We present enumeration results on the number of connected graphs up to 10 vertices for which there is at least one other graph with the same spectrum (a cospectral mate), or at least one other graph with the same Smith normal form (coinvariant mate) with respect to several matrices associated to a graph. The present data give some indication that possibly the Smith normal form of the distance Laplacian and the signless distance Laplacian matrices could be a finer invariant to distinguish graphs in cases where other algebraic invariants, such as those derived from the spectrum, fail. Finally, w…
The aim of this paper is to develop the combinatorics of constructions associated to what we call \emph{triangular partitions}. As introduced in arXiv:2102.07931, these are the partitions whose cells are those lying below the line joining points $(r,0)$ and $(0,s)$, for any given positive reals $r$ and $s$. Classical notions such as Dyck paths and parking functions are naturally generalized by considering the set of partitions included in a given triangular partition. One of our striking results is that the restriction of the Young lattice to triangular partition has a planar Hasse diagram, wi…
We prove a Matrix-Tree Theorem enumerating the spanning trees of a cell complex in terms of the eigenvalues of its cellular Laplacian operators, generalizing a previous result for simplicial complexes. As an application, we obtain explicit formulas for spanning tree enumerators and Laplacian eigenvalues of cubes; the latter are integers. We prove a weighted version of the eigenvalue formula, providing evidence for a conjecture on weighted enumeration of cubical spanning trees. We introduce a cubical analogue of shiftedness, and obtain a recursive formula for the Laplacian eigenvalues of shifte…
We obtain an explicit formula for a certain weighted enumeration of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with an arbitrary triangular hole. The complexity of our expression depends on the distance from the hole to the center of the hexagon. This proves and generalizes conjectures of Ciucu et al., who considered the case of plain enumeration when the triangle is located at or very near the center. Our proof uses Askey-Wilson polynomials as a tool to relate discrete and continuous Selberg-type integrals.
The weighted spanning tree enumerator of a graph $G$ with weighted edges is the sum of the products of edge weights over all the spanning trees in $G$. In the special case that all of the edge weights equal $1$, the weighted spanning tree enumerator counts the number of spanning trees in $G$. The Weighted Matrix-Tree Theorem asserts that the weighted spanning tree enumerator can be calculated from the determinant of a reduced weighted Laplacian matrix of $G$. That determinant, however, is not always easy to compute. In this paper, we show how two well-known results from linear algebra, the Mat…
We give new general formulas for the asymptotics of the number of spanning trees of a large graph. A special case answers a question of McKay (1983) for regular graphs. The general answer involves a quantity for infinite graphs that we call "tree entropy", which we show is a logarithm of a normalized determinant of the graph Laplacian for infinite graphs. Tree entropy is also expressed using random walks. We relate tree entropy to the metric entropy of the uniform spanning forest process on quasi-transitive amenable graphs, extending a result of Burton and Pemantle (1993).
The \emph{determinant Hosoya triangle}, is a triangular array where the entries are the determinants of two-by-two Fibonacci matrices. The determinant Hosoya triangle $\bmod \,2$ gives rise to three infinite families of graphs, that are formed by complete product (join) of (the union of) two complete graphs with an empty graph. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph from these families to be integral. Some features of these graphs are: they are integral cographs, all graphs have at most five distinct eigenvalues, all graphs are either $d$-regular graphs with $d=2,4,6,\dots $ …
In this paper, we compute asymptotics for the determinant of the combinatorial Laplacian on a sequence of $d$-dimensional orthotope square lattices as the number of vertices in each dimension grows at the same rate. It is related to the number of spanning trees by the well-known matrix tree theorem. Asymptotics for $2$ and $3$ component rooted spanning forests in these graphs are also derived. Moreover, we express the number of spanning trees in a $2$-dimensional square lattice in terms of the one in a $2$-dimensional discrete torus and also in the quartered Aztec diamond. As a consequence, we…
The Laplacian matrix of a simple graph is the difference of the diagonal matrix of vertex degree and the (0,1) adjacency matrix. In the past decades, the Laplacian spectrum has received much more and more attention, since it has been applied to several fields, such as randomized algorithms, combinatorial optimization problems and machine learning. This paper is primarily a survey of various aspects of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix of a graph for the past teens. In addition, some new unpublished results and questions are concluded. Emphasis is given on classifications of the upper and…
Kirchhoff's Matrix-Tree Theorem asserts that the number of spanning trees in a finite graph can be computed from the determinant of any of its reduced Laplacian matrices. In many cases, even for well-studied families of graphs, this can be computationally or algebraically taxing. We show how two well-known results from linear algebra, the Matrix Determinant Lemma and the Schur complement, can be used to elegantly count the spanning trees in several significant families of graphs.
We generalize the definition and enumeration of spanning trees from the setting of graphs to that of arbitrary-dimensional simplicial complexes $Δ$, extending an idea due to G. Kalai. We prove a simplicial version of the Matrix-Tree Theorem that counts simplicial spanning trees, weighted by the squares of the orders of their top-dimensional integral homology groups, in terms of the Laplacian matrix of $Δ$. As in the graphic case, one can obtain a more finely weighted generating function for simplicial spanning trees by assigning an indeterminate to each vertex of $Δ$ and replacing the entries …
We determine the number of labelled chordal planar graphs with $n$ vertices, which is asymptotically $c_1\cdot n^{-5/2} γ^n n!$ for a constant $c_1>0$ and $γ\approx 11.89235$. We also determine the number of rooted simple chordal planar maps with $n$ edges, which is asymptotically $c_2 n^{-3/2} δ^n$, where $δ= 1/σ\approx 6.40375$, and $σ$ is an algebraic number of degree 12. The proofs are based on combinatorial decompositions and singularity analysis. Chordal planar graphs (or maps) are a natural example of a subcritical class of graphs in which the class of 3-connected graphs is relatively r…
It is known that there is an alternative characterization of characteristic vertices for trees with positive weights on their edges via Perron values and Perron branches. Moreover, the algebraic connectivity of a tree with positive edge weights can be expressed in terms of Perron value. In this article, we consider trees with matrix weights on their edges. More precisely, we are interested in trees with the following classes of matrix edge weights: 1. positive definite matrix weights, 2. lower (or upper) triangular matrix weights with positive diagonal entries. For trees with the above classes…
Operators are induced on fermion and zeon algebras by the action of adjacency matrices and combinatorial Laplacians on the vector spaces spanned by the graph's vertices. Properties of the algebras automatically give information about the graph's spanning trees and vertex coverings by cycles \& matchings. Combining the properties of operators induced on fermions and zeons gives a fermion-zeon convolution that recovers the number of Hamiltonian cycles in an arbitrary graph. The mathematics underlying the graph-theoretic interpretation of these operators is provided by Kirchhoff's theorem and by …
It is known from the algebraic graph theory that if $L$ is the Laplacian matrix of some tree $G$ with a vertex degree sequence $\mathbf{d}=(d_1, ..., d_n)^\top$ and $D$ is its distance matrix, then $LD+2I=(2\cdot\mathbf{1}-\mathbf{d})\mathbf{1}^\top$, where $\mathbf{1}$ is an all-ones column vector. We prove that if this matrix identity holds for the Laplacian matrix of some graph $G$ with a degree sequence $\mathbf{d}$ and for some matrix $D$, then $G$ is essentially a tree, and $D$ is its distance matrix. This result immediately generalizes to weighted graphs. If the matrix $D$ is symmetric,…
We prove that a random group in the triangular density model has, for density larger than 1/3, fixed point properties for actions on $L^p$-spaces (affine isometric, and more generally $(2-2ε)^{1/2p}$-uniformly Lipschitz) with $p$ varying in an interval increasing with the set of generators. In the same model, we establish a double inequality between the maximal $p$ for which $L^p$-fixed point properties hold and the conformal dimension of the boundary. In the Gromov density model, we prove that for every $p_0 \in [2, \infty)$ for a sufficiently large number of generators and for any density la…

Let $G$ be a graph. Its laplacian matrix $L(G)$ is positive and we consider eigenvectors of its first non-null eigenvalue that are called Fiedler vector. They have been intensively used in spectral partitioning problems due to their good empirical properties. More recently Fiedler vectors have been also popularized in the computer graphics community to describe elongation of shapes. In more technical terms, authors have conjectured that extrema of Fiedler vectors can yield the diameter of a graph. In this work we present (FED) property for a graph $G$, i.e. the fact that diameter of a graph ca…
