We generalize the definition and enumeration of spanning trees from the setting of graphs to that of arbitrary-dimensional simplicial complexes $Δ$, extending an idea due to G. Kalai. We prove a simplicial version of the Matrix-Tree Theorem that counts simplicial spanning trees, weighted by the squares of the orders of their top-dimensional integral homology groups, in terms of the Laplacian matrix of $Δ$. As in the graphic case, one can obtain a more finely weighted generating function for simplicial spanning trees by assigning an indeterminate to each vertex of $Δ$ and replacing the entries of the Laplacian with Laurent monomials. When $Δ$ is a shifted complex, we give a combinatorial interpretation of the eigenvalues of its weighted Laplacian and prove that they determine its set of faces uniquely, generalizing known results about threshold graphs and unweighted Laplacian eigenvalues of shifted complexes.

We generalize the concept of a cycle from graphs to simplicial complexes. We show that a simplicial cycle is either a sequence of facets connected in the shape of a circle, or is a cone over such a structure. We show that a simplicial tree is a connected cycle-free simplicial complex, and use this characterization to produce an algorithm that checks in polynomial time whether a simplicial complex is a tree. We also present an efficient algorithm for checking whether a simplicial complex is grafted, and therefore Cohen-Macaulay.
We verify the Upper Bound Conjecture (UBC) for a class of odd-dimensional simplicial complexes that in particular includes all Eulerian simplicial complexes with isolated singularities. The proof relies on a new invariant of simplicial complexes -- a short simplicial h-vector.
This paper uses dualities between facet ideal theory and Stanley-Reisner theory to show that the facet ideal of a simplicial tree is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. The proof involves showing that the Alexander dual (or the cover dual, as we call it here) of a simplicial tree is a componentwise linear ideal. We conclude with additional combinatorial properties of simplicial trees.
We explore resolutions of monomial ideals supported by simplicial trees. We argue that since simplicial trees are acyclic, the criterion of Bayer, Peeva and Sturmfels for checking if a simplicial complex supports a free resolution of a monomial ideal reduces to checking that certain induced subcomplexes are connected. We then use results of Peeva and Velasco to show that every simplicial tree appears as the Scarf complex of a monomial ideal, and hence supports a minimal resolution. We also provide a way to construct smaller Scarf ideals than those constructed by Peeva and Velasco.
Stanley proved that for any centrally symmetric simplicial $d$-polytope $P$ with $d\geq 3$, $g_2(P) \geq {d \choose 2}-d$. We provide a characterization of centrally symmetric $d$-polytopes with $d\geq 4$ that satisfy this inequality as equality. This gives a natural generalization of the classical Lower Bound Theorem for simplicial polytopes to the setting of centrally symmetric simplicial polytopes.
We generalize some homotopy calculation techniques such as splittings and matching trees that are introduced for the computations in the case of the independence complexes of graphs to arbitrary simplicial complexes, and exemplify their efficiency on some simplicial complexes, the devoid complexes of graphs, which are simplicial complexes parametrized by graphs. Additionally, we compute the homotopy type of dominance complexes of chordal graphs.
Much information about a graph can be obtained by studying its spanning trees. On the other hand, a graph can be regarded as a 1-dimensional cell complex, raising the question of developing a theory of trees in higher dimension. As observed first by Bolker, Kalai and Adin, and more recently by numerous authors, the fundamental topological properties of a tree --- namely acyclicity and connectedness --- can be generalized to arbitrary dimension as the vanishing of certain cellular homology groups. This point of view is consistent with the matroid-theoretic approach to graphs, and yields higher-…
A recent framework for generalizing the Erdos-Ko-Rado Theorem, due to Holroyd, Spencer, and Talbot, defines the Erdos-Ko-Rado property for a graph in terms of the graph's independent sets. Since the family of all independent sets of a graph forms a simplicial complex, it is natural to further generalize the Erdos-Ko-Rado property to an arbitrary simplicial complex. An advantage of working in simplicial complexes is the availability of algebraic shifting, a powerful shifting (compression) technique, which we use to verify a conjecture of Holroyd and Talbot in the case of sequentially Cohen-Maca…
We show that for proving the Stanley conjecture, it is sufficient to consider a very special class of monomial ideals. These ideals (or rather their lcm lattices) are in bijection with the simplicial spanning trees of skeletons of a simplex. We apply this result to verify the Stanley conjecture for quotients of monomial ideals with up to six generators. For seven generators we obtain a partial result.
We study $n$-vertex $d$-dimensional polytopes with at most one nonsimplex facet with, say, $d+s$ vertices, called {\it almost simplicial polytopes}. We provide tight lower and upper bound theorems for these polytopes as functions of $d,n$ and $s$, thus generalizing the classical Lower Bound Theorem by Barnette and Upper Bound Theorem by McMullen, which treat the case of $s=0$. We characterize the minimizers and provide examples of maximizers, for any $d$. Our construction of maximizers is a generalization of cyclic polytopes, based on a suitable variation of the moment curve, and is of indepen…
Let $f_i(P)$ denote the number of $i$-dimensional faces of a convex polytope $P$. Furthermore, let $S(n,d)$ and $C(n,d)$ denote, respectively, the stacked and the cyclic $d$-dimensional polytopes on $n$ vertices. Our main result is that for every simplicial $d$-polytope $P$, if $$ f_r(S(n_1,d))\le f_r(P) \le f_r(C(n_2,d)) $$ for some integers $n_1, n_2$ and $r$, then $$ f_s(S(n_1,d))\le f_s(P) \le f_s(C(n_2,d)) $$ for all $s$ such that $r<s$. For $r=0$ these inequalities are the well-known lower and upper bound theorems for simplicial polytopes. The result is implied by a certain ``comparison …
A $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex is called balanced if its underlying graph admits a proper $d$-coloring. We show that many well-known face enumeration results have natural balanced analogs (or at least conjectural analogs). Specifically, we prove the balanced analog of the celebrated Lower Bound Theorem for pseudomanifolds and characterize the case of equality; we introduce and characterize the balanced analog of the Walkup class; we propose the balanced analog of the Generalized Lower Bound Conjecture and establish some related results. We close with constructions of balanced manifol…
A spanning tree $T$ in a graph $G$ is a sub-graph of $G$ with the same vertex set as $G$ which is a tree. In 1981, McKay proved an asymptotic result regarding the number of spanning trees in random $k$-regular graphs. In this paper we prove a high-dimensional generalization of McKay's result for random $d$-dimensional, $k$-regular simplicial complexes on $n$ vertices, showing that the weighted number of simplicial spanning trees is of order $(ξ_{d,k}+o(1))^{\binom{n}{d}}$ as $n\to\infty$, where $ξ_{d,k}$ is an explicit constant, provided $k> 4d^2+d+2$. A key ingredient in our proof is the loca…
This paper considers three separate matrices associated to graphs and (each dimension of) cell complexes. It relates all the coefficients of their respective characteristic polynomials to the geometric and combinatorial enumeration of three kinds of subobjects. The matrices are: the mesh matrix for integral d-cycles of Trent, the mesh matrix for integral d-boundaries, and the Kirchhoff matrix, i.e., the combinatorial Laplacian, for integral (d-1)-chains. Relations to Reidemeister-Franz torsion are elucidated and relations to the foundational work of R. Lyons and G. Kalai.
To a simplicial complex, we associate a square-free monomial ideal in the polynomial ring generated by its vertex set over a field. We study algebraic properties of this ideal via combinatorial properties of the simplicial complex. By generalizing the notion of a tree from graphs to simplicial complexes, we show that ideals associated to trees satisfy sliding depth condition, and therefore have normal and Cohen-Macaulay Rees rings. We also discuss connections with the theory of Stanley-Reisner rings.
We introduce the notion of k-hyperclique complexes, i.e., the largest simplicial complexes on the set [n] with a fixed k-skeleton. These simplicial complexes are a higher-dimensional analogue of clique (or flag) complexes (case k=2) and they are a rich new class of simplicial complexes. We show that Dirac's theorem on chordal graphs has a higher-dimensional analogue in which graphs and clique complexes get replaced, respectively, by simplicial matroids and k-hyperclique complexes. We prove also a higher-dimensional analogue of Stanley's reformulation of Dirac's theorem on chordal graphs.
This paper is a survey of recent advances as well as open problems in the study of face numbers of centrally symmetric simplicial polytopes and spheres. The topics discussed range from neighborliness of centrally symmetric polytopes and the upper bound theorem for centrally symmetric simplicial spheres to the generalized lower bound theorem for centrally symmetric simplicial polytopes and the lower bound conjecture for centrally symmetric simplicial spheres and manifolds.
We prove a Matrix-Tree Theorem enumerating the spanning trees of a cell complex in terms of the eigenvalues of its cellular Laplacian operators, generalizing a previous result for simplicial complexes. As an application, we obtain explicit formulas for spanning tree enumerators and Laplacian eigenvalues of cubes; the latter are integers. We prove a weighted version of the eigenvalue formula, providing evidence for a conjecture on weighted enumeration of cubical spanning trees. We introduce a cubical analogue of shiftedness, and obtain a recursive formula for the Laplacian eigenvalues of shifte…
We generalize the theory of critical groups from graphs to simplicial complexes. Specifically, given a simplicial complex, we define a family of abelian groups in terms of combinatorial Laplacian operators, generalizing the construction of the critical group of a graph. We show how to realize these critical groups explicitly as cokernels of reduced Laplacians, and prove that they are finite, with orders given by weighted enumerators of simplicial spanning trees. We describe how the critical groups of a complex represent flow along its faces, and sketch another potential interpretation as analo…
We prove the Weak Lefschetz theorem for simplicial PL-spheres. This result is weaker than the Hard Lefschetz theorem for more general spheres proved by Adiprasito (arXiv:1812.10454), but the proof here involves simple algebra and avoids the more complicated combinatorics.
In 1983 Kalai proved an incredible generalisation of Cayley's formula for the number of trees on a labelled vertex set to a formula for a class of $r$-dimensional simplicial complexes. These simplicial complexes generalise trees by means of being homologically $\Bbb Q$-acyclic. In this text we consider a different generalisation of trees to the class of pure dimensional simplicial complexes that \textit{minimally connect a vertex set} (in the sense that the removal of any top dimensional face disconnects the complex). Our main result provides an upper and lower bound for the number of these mi…
Strong placement games (SP-games) are a class of combinatorial games whose structure allows one to describe the game via simplicial complexes. A natural question is whether well-known invariants of combinatorial games, such as "game value", appear as invariants of the simplicial complexes. This paper is the first step in that direction. We show that every simplicial complex encodes a certain type of SP-game (called an "invariant SP-game") whose ruleset is independent of the board it is played on. We also show that in the class of SP-games isomorphic simplicial complexes correspond to isomorphi…
We examine Deligne's classical proof of the asphericity of simplicial arrangements from the viewpoint of the combinatorics of the poset of regions of the arrangement. This turns out to be very natural. In particular, we show that an arrangement is simplicial only if it satisfies Deligne's property on positive paths, thus answering a question posed by Luis Paris.
There have been several recent articles studying homology of various types of random simplicial complexes. Several theorems have concerned thresholds for vanishing of homology, and in some cases expectations of the Betti numbers. However little seems known so far about limiting distributions of random Betti numbers. In this article we establish Poisson and normal approximation theorems for Betti numbers of different kinds of random simplicial complex: Erdős-Rényi random clique complexes, random Vietoris-Rips complexes, and random Čech complexes. These results may be of practical interest in to…
It is known that there are finitely many simplicial complexes (up to isomorphism) with a given number of vertices. Translating to the language of $h$-vectors, there are finitely many simplicial complexes of bounded dimension with $h_1=k$ for any natural number $k$. In this paper we study the question at the other end of the $h$-vector: Are there only finitely many $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complexes with $h_d=k$ for any given $k$? The answer is no if we consider general complexes, but when focus on three cases coming from matroids: (i) independence complexes, (ii) broken circuit complexes…
The dollar game is a chip-firing game introduced by Baker and Norine (2007) as a context in which to formulate and prove the Riemann-Roch theorem for graphs. A divisor on a graph is a formal integer sum of vertices. Each determines a dollar game, the goal of which is to transform the given divisor into one that is effective (nonnegative) using chip-firing moves. We use Duval, Klivans, and Martin's theory of chip-firing on simplicial complexes to generalize the dollar game and results related to the Riemann-Roch theorem for graphs to higher dimensions. In particular, we extend the notion of the…
The task of this survey is to present various results on intersection patterns of convex sets. One of main tools for studying intersection patterns is a point of view via simplicial complexes. We recall the definitions of so called $d$-representable, $d$-collapsible and $d$-Leray simplicial complexes which are very useful for this study. We study the differences among these notions and we also focus on computational complexity for recognizing them. A list of Helly-type theorems is presented in the survey and it is also discussed how (important) role play the above mentioned notions for the the…
One theorem of Nemhauser and Trotter ensures that, under certain conditions, a stable set of a graph G can be enlarged to a maximum stable set of this graph. For example, any stable set consisting of only simplicial vertices is contained in a maximum stable set of G. In this paper we demonstrate that an inverse assertion is true for trees of order greater than one, where, in fact, all the simplicial vertices are pendant. Namely, we show that any maximum stable set of such a tree contains at least one pendant vertex. Moreover, we prove that if T does not own a perfect matching, then a stable se…
We prove some new rank selection theorems for balanced simplicial complexes. Specifically, we prove that rank selected subcomplexes of balanced simplicial complexes satisfying Serre's condition $(S_{\ell})$ retain $(S_{\ell})$. We also provide a formula for the depth of a balanced simplicial complex in terms of reduced homologies of its rank selected subcomplexes. By passing to a barycentric subdivision, our results give information about Serre's condition and the depth of any simplicial compex. Our results extend rank selection theorems for depth proved by Stanley, Munkres, and Hibi.
A shelling of a graph, viewed as an abstract simplicial complex that is pure of dimension 1, is an ordering of its edges such that every edge is adjacent to some other edges appeared previously. In this paper, we focus on complete bipartite graphs and trees. For complete bipartite graphs, we obtain an exact formula for their shelling numbers. And for trees, we relate their shelling numbers to linear extensions of tree posets and bound shelling numbers using vertex degrees and diameter.
Let X be a simplicial complex on the vertex set V. The rational Leray number L(X) of X is the minimal d such that the rational reduced homology of any induced subcomplex of X vanishes in dimensions d and above. Let πbe a simplicial map from X to a simplex Y, such that the cardinality of the preimage of any point in |Y| is at most r. It is shown that L(π(X)) \leq r L(X)+r-1. One consequence is a topological extension of a Helly type result of Amenta.
We introduce the signless 1-Laplacians and the dual Cheeger constants on simplicial complexes. The connection of its spectrum to the combinatorial properties like independence number, chromatic number and dual Cheeger constant is investigated. Our estimates can be comparable to Hoffman's bounds in virtue of Laplacian on simplicial complexes. An interesting inequality relating multiplicity of the largest eigenvalue, independence number and chromatic number are provided, which could be regarded as a variant version of Lovasz sandwich theorem. Also, the behavior of the operator under the topologi…
We define a new stochastic process on general simplicial complexes which allows to study their spectral and homological properties. Some results for random walks on graphs are shown to hold in this general setting. As an application, the process is used to calculate the spectral measure of high-dimensional analogues of regular trees and to construct solutions to the high-dimensional Dirichlet problem for forms.
There are a large number of theorems detailing the homological properties of the Stanley--Reisner ring of a simplicial complex. Here we attempt to generalize some of these results to the case of a simplicial poset. By investigating the combinatorics of certain modules associated with the face ring of a simplicial poset from a topological viewpoint, we extend some results of Miyazaki and Gräbe to a wider setting.
We suggest a new possible high dimensional analogue to metric distortion. We then show a possible method for providing lower bounds to this distortion and use this method to prove a "Bourgain-type" distortion theorem for Linial-Meshulam random complexes.
In this paper, we introduce the concept of spanning simplicial complexes $Δ_s(G)$ associated to a simple finite connected graph G. We give the characterization of all spanning trees of the uni-cyclic graph $U_{n,m}$. In particular, we give the formula for computing the Hilbert series and h-vector of the Stanley-Riesner ring k[Δ_s(U_{n,m})]. Finally, we prove that the spanning simplicial complex $Δ_s(U_{n,m})$ is shifted hence $Δ_s(U_{n,m})$ is shellable.
We study a general model of random dynamical simplicial complexes and derive a formula for the asymptotic degree distribution. This asymptotic formula encompasses results for a number of existing models, including random Apollonian networks and the weighted random recursive tree. It also confirms results on the scale-free nature of Complex Quantum Network Manifolds in dimensions $d > 2$, and special types of Network Geometry with Flavour models studied in the physics literature by Bianconi, Rahmede [$\mathit{Sci. Rep.} \; \mathbf{5},\text{ 13979 (2015) and }\mathit{Phys. Rev. E} \; \mathbf{93}…
We study the homological properties of random simplicial complexes. In particular, we obtain the asymptotic behavior of lifetime sums for a class of increasing random simplicial complexes; this result is a higher-dimensional counterpart of Frieze's $ζ(3)$-limit theorem for the Erdős-Rényi graph process. The main results include solutions to questions posed in an earlier study by Hiraoka and Shirai about the Linial-Meshulam complex process and the random clique complex process. One of the key elements of the arguments is a new upper bound on the Betti numbers of general simplicial complexes in …
In this paper we study simplicial complexes as higher dimensional graphs in order to produce algebraic statements about their facet ideals. We introduce a large class of square-free monomial ideals with Cohen-Macaulay quotients, and a criterion for the Cohen-Macaulayness of facet ideals of simplicial trees. Along the way, we generalize several concepts from graph theory to simplicial complexes.
We extend the edge version of the classical Menger's Theorem for undirected graphs to $n$-dimensional simplicial complexes with chains over the field $\mathbb{F}_2$. The classical Menger's Theorem states that two different vertices in an undirected graph can be connected by $k$ pairwise edge-disjoint paths if, and only if, after a deletion of any $k-1$ edges from the graph, there will still will exist a path connecting these two vertices. We introduce the notion of $k$-boundance of $(n-1)$-dimensional cycles in an $n$-dimensional simplicial complex over $\mathbb{F}_2$, which is a generalizatio…
The Linial-Meshulam complex model is a natural higher-dimensional analog of the Erdős-Rényi graph model. In recent years, Linial and Peled established a limit theorem for Betti numbers of Linial-Meshulam complexes with an appropriate scaling of the underlying parameter. The present paper aims to extend that result to more-general random simplicial complex models. We introduce a class of homogeneous and spatially independent random simplicial complexes, including the Linial-Meshulam complex model and the random clique complex model as special cases, and we study the asymptotic behavior of their…
We show that the natural Glauber dynamics mixes rapidly and generates a random proper edge-coloring of a graph with maximum degree $Δ$ whenever the number of colors is at least $q\geq (\frac{10}{3} + ε)Δ$, where $ε>0$ is arbitrary and the maximum degree satisfies $Δ\geq C$ for a constant $C = C(ε)$ depending only on $ε$. For edge-colorings, this improves upon prior work \cite{Vig99, CDMPP19} which show rapid mixing when $q\geq (\frac{11}{3}-ε_0 ) Δ$, where $ε_0 \approx 10^{-5}$ is a small fixed constant. At the heart of our proof, we establish a matrix trickle-down theorem, generalizing Oppenh…
We deduce a structurally inductive description of the determinantal probability measure associated with Kalai's celebrated enumeration result for higher--dimensional spanning trees of the $n-1$--simplex. As a consequence, we derive the marginal distributions of the simplex links in such random trees. Along the way, we also characterize the higher--dimensional spanning trees of every other simplicial cone in terms of the higher--dimensional rooted forests of the underlying simplicial complex. We also apply these new results to random topology, the spectral analysis of random graphs, and the the…
