The main results of this paper are a Cell Decomposition Theorem for Henselian valued fields with analytic structure in an analytic Denef-Pas language, and its application to analytic motivic integrals and analytic integrals over $\FF_q((t))$ of big enough characteristic. To accomplish this, we introduce a general framework for Henselian valued fields $K$ with analytic structure, and we investigate the structure of analytic functions in one variable, defined on annuli over $K$. We also prove that, after parameterization, definable analytic functions are given by terms. The results in this paper pave the way for a theory of \emph{analytic} motivic integration and \emph{analytic} motivic constructible functions in the line of R. Cluckers and F. Loeser [\emph{Fonctions constructible et intégration motivic I}, Comptes rendus de l'Académie des Sciences, {\bf 339} (2004) 411 - 416].
We introduce a direct image formalism for constructible motivic functions. One deduces a very general version of motivic integration for which a change of variables theorem is proved. These constructions are generalized to the relative framework, in which we develop a relative version of motivic integration. These results have been announced in math.AG/0403349 and math.AG/0403350. Main results and statements unchanged. Many minor slips corrected and some details added.
We survey our recent work on an extension of the theory of motivic integration, called arithmetic motivic integration. We developed this theory to understand how p-adic integrals of a very general type depend on p.

For a formal scheme over a complete discrete valuation ring with a good action of a finite group, we define equivariant motivic integration, and we prove a change of variable formula for that.To do so, we construct and examine an induced group action on the Greenberg scheme of such a formal scheme. Using this equivariant motivic integration, we define an equivariant volume Poincaré series, from which we deduce Denef and Loeser's motivic zeta function including the action of the profinite group of roots of unity.
We develop the Denef-Loeser motivic integration to the equivariant motivic integration and use it to prove the full integral identity conjecture for regular functions.
We extend the formalism and results on motivic integration from ["Constructible motivic functions and motivic integration", Invent. Math., Volume 173, (2008) 23-121] to mixed characteristic discretely valued Henselian fields with bounded ramification. We also generalize the equicharacteristic zero case of loc. cit. by giving, in all residue characteristics, an axiomatic approach (instead of only using Denef-Pas languages) and by using richer angular component maps. In this setting we prove a general change of variables formula and a general Fubini Theorem. Our set-up can be specialized to prev…
The present work is devoted to the study of motivic integration on quotient singularities. We give a new proof of a form of the McKay correspondence previously proved by Batyrev. The paper contains also some general results on motivic integration on arbitrary singular spaces.
We develop further the theory of integrable functions within the theory of relative simplicial motivic measures. We provide a primitive change of variables formula for this theory.
We formulate a comparison of minimal log discrepancies of a variety and its ambient space with appropriate boundaries in terms of motivic integration. It was obtained also by Ein and Mustaţǎ independently.
This survey paper, to appear in he proceedings of the Miami Winter School ``Geometric Methods in Algebra and Number Theory'', is concerned with extending classical results à la Ax-Kochen-Er{š}ov to $p$-adic integrals in a motivic setting, using the framework of constructible motivic functions we introduced in math.AG/0410203. We conclude the paper by discussing briefly the relevance of our results to the study of orbital integrals and the Fundamental Lemma.
Through a cascade of generalizations, we develop a theory of motivic integration which works uniformly in all non-archimedean local fields of characteristic zero, overcoming some of the difficulties related to ramification and small residue field characteristics. We define a class of functions, called functions of motivic exponential class, which we show to be stable under integration and under Fourier transformation, extending results and definitions from previous papers. We prove uniform results related to rationality and to various kinds of loci. A key ingredient is a refined form of Denef-…
The purpose of this paper is to show how the motivic integration methods of Kontsevich, Denef-Loeser and Looijenga can be adapted to prove the McKay-Ruan correspondence, a generalization of the McKay-Reid correspondence to orbifolds that are not necessarily global quotients.
We introduce a quotient of the Grothendieck ring of varieties by identifying classes of universally homeomorphic varieties. We show that the standard realization morphisms factor through this quotient, and we argue that it is the correct value ring for the theory of motivic integration on formal schemes and rigid varieties in mixed characteristic. The present note is an excerpt of a detailed survey paper which will be published in the proceedings of the conference "Motivic integration and its interactions with model theory and non-archimedean geometry" (ICMS, 2008).
These are notes of a series of talks about motivic integration I gave on the Münster Model Theory Month. Readers are assumed to have some basic knowledge of model theory and of valued fields. The notes are closest to the Cluckers-Loeser style of motivic integration, though mostly they are about doing p-adic integration uniformly in all $\mathbb{Q}_p$.
These notes grew out of several introductory talks I gave during the years 2003--2005 on motivic integration. They give a short but thorough introduction to the flavor of motivic integration which nowadays goes by the name of geometric motivic integration. As an illustration of the theory some applications to birational geometry are also included.
We prove that if two semi-algebraic subsets of $\mathbb{Q}_p^n$ have the same $p$-adic measure, then this equality can already be deduced using only some basic integral transformation rules. On the one hand, this can be considered as a positive answer to a $p$-adic analogue of a question asked by Kontsevich-Zagier in the reals (though the question in the reals is much harder). On the other hand, our result can also be considered as stating that over $\mathbb{Q}_p$, universal motivic integration (in the sense of Hrushovski-Kazhdan) is just $p$-adic integration.
We elaborate notions of integration over the space of arcs factorized by the natural $C^*$-action and over the space of non-parametrized arcs (branches). There are offered two motivic versions of the zeta function of the classical monodromy transformation of a germ of an analytic function on a smooth space. We indicate a direct formula which connects the naive motivic zeta function of J. Denef and F. Loeser with the classical monodromy zeta function.
We give a version of geometric motivic integration that specializes to p-adic integration via point counting. This has been done before for stable sets; we extend this to more general sets. The main problem in doing this is that it requires to take limits, hence the measure will have to take values in a completion of the (localized) Grothendieck ring of varieties. The standard choice is to complete with respect to the dimension filtration; however, since the point counting homomorphism is not continuous with respect to this topology we have to use a stronger one. The first part of the paper is…
We provide a gentle introduction to arc spaces, motivic integration and stringy invariants. We explain the basic concepts and first results, including the p-adic number theoretic pre-history, and we provide concrete examples. The text is a slightly adapted version of the 'extended abstract' of the author's talks at the 12th MSJ-IRI "Singularity Theory and Its Applications" (2003) in Sapporo. At the end we included a list of various recent results.
We present a general, functorial approach to Motivic Integration for separated schemes of finite type in lieu of recent work by Hans Schoutens on the subject. Presented is a change of variables formula and a hierarchy of stability properties which are closely connected to the integrability of Motivic functions for schemes. Most notably, we prove that if a scheme has smooth reduction then it has a natural geometric definition of motivic volume in the Grothendick ring of the formal motivic site.
We present a decomposition of the space of twisted arcs of a toric stack. As a consequence, we give a combinatorial description of the motivic integral associated to a torus-invariant divisor of a toric stack.
By associating a `motivic integral' to every complex projective variety X with at worst canonical, Gorenstein singularities, Kontsevich proved that, when there exists a crepant resolution of singularities Y of X, the Hodge numbers of Y do not depend upon the choice of the resolution. In this article we provide an elementary introduction to the theory of motivic integration, leading to a proof of the result described above. We calculate the motivic integral of several quotient singularities and discuss these calculations in the context of the cohomological McKay correspondence.
The aim of this article is to develop the theory of motivic integration over Deligne-Mumford stacks and to apply it to the birational geometry of stacks.
We prove that the moduli spaces of twisted $\mathrm{SL}_n$ and $\mathrm{PGL}_n$-Higgs bundles on a smooth projective curve have the same (stringy) class in the Grothendieck ring of rational Chow motives. On the level of Hodge numbers this was conjectured by Hausel and Thaddeus, and recently proven by Groechenig, Ziegler and the second author. To adapt their argument, which relies on p-adic integration, we use a version of motivic integration with values in rational Chow motives and the geometry of Néron models to evaluate such integrals on Hitchin fibers.
We propose a geometric interpretation of Block and Göttsche's refined tropical curve counting invariants in terms of virtual $χ_{-y}$-specializations of motivic measures of semialgebraic sets in relative Hilbert schemes. We prove that this interpretation is correct for linear series of genus 1, and in arbitrary genus after specializing from $χ_{-y}$ to Euler characteristic.
We study the scheme of formal arcs on a singular algebraic variety and its images under truncations. We prove a rationality result for the Poincare series of these images which is an analogue of the rationality of the Poincare series associated to p-adic points on a p-adic variety. The main tools which are used are semi-algebraic geometry in spaces of power series and motivic integration (a notion introduced by M. Kontsevich). In particular we develop the theory of motivic integration for semi-algebraic sets of formal arcs on singular algebraic varieties, we prove a change of variable formula …
In what follows, we are interested in an extension of a theorem of Nicholas Katz, which will be useful in studying the cohomology of generalized arc spaces develop by Hans Schoutens. As is well known, one is typically interested in the motivic volume of a definable subset of $\mathcal{X} \times X \times \mathbb{Z}^n$ where $\mathcal{X}$ is a scheme over $k((t))$ and $X$ the special fiber of $\mathcal{X}$ . Schoutens has introduced the possibility of developing a motivic integration for limit points other than $k[[t]]$.
We prove that a conjecture of Chai on the additivity of the base change conductor for semi-abelian varieties over a discretely valued field is equivalent to a Fubini property for the dimensions of certain motivic integrals. We prove this Fubini property when the valued field has characteristic zero.
We define an operation of evaluation at a point for motivic constructible (exponential) functions from the Cluckers-Loeser framework of motivic integration and show that two such motivic functions are abstractly equal if and only if their evaluations at each point are the same. We similarly characterise relative integrability in terms of integrability in each fiber separately. These results simplify the mentioned frameworks of motivic integration and their usage.
We reformulate the construction of Kontsevich's completion and use Lawson homology to define many new motivic invariants. We show that the dimensions of subspaces generated by algebraic cycles of the cohomology groups of two $K$-equivalent varieties are the same, which implies that several conjectures of algebraic cycles are $K$-statements. We define stringy functions which enable us to ask stringy Grothendieck standard conjecture and stringy Hodge conjecture. We prove a projective bundle theorem in morphic cohomology for trivial bundles over any normal quasi-projective varieties.
We put forward in this paper a uniform narrative that weaves together several variants of Hrushovski-Kazhdan style integral, and describe how it can facilitate the understanding of the Denef-Loeser motivic Milnor fiber and closely related objects. Our study focuses on the so-called "nonarchimedean Milnor fiber" that was introduced by Hrushovski and Loeser, and our thesis is that it is a richer embodiment of the underlying philosophy of the Milnor construction. The said narrative is first developed in the more natural complex environment, and is then extended to the real one via descent. In the…
We construct a new motivic integration morphism, the so-call bounded integral, that interpolates both the integration morphisms with and without volume forms of Hrushovski and Kazhdan. This is done within the framework of model theory of algebraically closed valued fields of equicharacteristic zero. As an application, we recover and extend some results of Hrushovski and Loeser about the motivic Milnor fiber.
Bershadsky, Cecotti, Ooguri, and Vafa constructed a real-valued invariant for Calabi--Yau manifolds, which is now called the BCOV torsion. Based on it, a metric-independent invariant, called the BCOV invariant, was constructed by Fang--Lu--Yoshikawa and Eriksson--Freixas i Montplet--Mourougane. The BCOV invariant is conjecturally related to the Gromov--Witten theory via mirror symmetry. Based upon the previous work of the second author, we prove the conjecture that birational Calabi--Yau manifolds have the same BCOV invariant. We also extend the construction of the BCOV invariant to Calabi--Ya…
We propose a suitable substitute for the classical Grothendieck ring of an algebraically closed field, in which any quasi-projective scheme is represented, while maintaining its non-reduced structure. This yields a more subtle invariant, called the schemic Grothendieck ring, in which we can formulate a form of integration resembling Kontsevich's motivic integration via arc schemes. In view of its more functorial properties, we can present a characteristic-free proof of the rationality of the geometric Igusa zeta series for certain hypersurfaces, thus generalizing the ground-breaking work on mo…
In this thesis, we use logarithmic methods to study motivic objects. Let R be a complete discrete valuation ring with perfect residue field k, and denote by K its fraction field. We give in chapter 2 a new construction of the motivic Serre invariant of a smooth K-variety and extend it additively to arbitrary K-varieties. The main advantage of this construction is to rely only on resolution of singularities and not on a characteristic zero assumption, as did previous results. As an application, we give a conditional positive answer to Serre's question on the existence of rational fixed points o…
In this paper, we construct four different theories of integration, two that are for Voevodsky motives, one for mixed $\ell$-adic sheaves, and a fourth theory of integration for rational mixed Hodge structures. We then show that they circumvent some of the complications of classical motivic integration, leading to new arithmetic and geometric results concerning K-equivalent $k$-varieties. For example, in addition to recovering known results regarding K-equivalent smooth projective complex varieties, we show that K-equivalent smooth projective $\mathbb{F}_q$-varieties have isomorphic rational $…
For arbitrary connected reductive group G we consider the motivic integral over the arc space of an arbitrary Q-Gorenstein horospherical G-variety associated with a colored fan and prove a formula for the stringy E-function of a horospherical variety X which generalizes the one for toric varieties. We remark that in contrast to toric varieties the stringy E-function of a Gorenstein horospherical variety X may be not a polynomial if some cones in the fan of X have nonempty sets of colors. Using the stringy E-function, we can formulate and prove a new smoothness criterion for locally factorial h…
We prove the version of Joyce-Song formula for the Behrend function identities in the motivic setting. The main method we use is the proof of Kontsevich-Soibelman conjecture about the motivic Milnor fibers by Q. T. Le, who uses the method of motivic integration for formal schemes and Cluckers-Loeser's motivic constructible functions. In the Appendix the motivic formula can be used to provide a different proof that there is an algebra homomorphism of Kontsevich-Soibelman from the motivic Hall algebra of the abelian category of coherent sheaves on a Calabi-Yau threefold $Y$ to the motivic quantu…
To a given analytic function germ $f:(\mathbb{R}^d,0) \to (\mathbb{R},0)$, we associate zeta functions $Z_{f,+}$, $Z_{f,-} \in \mathbb{Z} [[T]]$, defined analogously to the motivic zeta functions of Denef and Loeser. We show that our zeta functions are rational and that they are invariants of the blow-analytic equivalence in the sense of Kuo. Then we use them together with the Fukui invariant to classify the blow-analytic equivalence classes of Brieskorn polynomials of two variables. Except special series of singularities our method classifies as well the blow-analytic equivalence classes of B…
We develop a "motivic integration" version of the Poisson summation formula for function fields, with values in the Grothendieck ring of definable exponential sums. We also study division algebras over the function field, and obtain relations among the motivic Fourier transforms of a test function at different completions. We use these to prove, in a special case, a motivic version of a theorem of Deligne-Kazhdan-Vigneras.
In this paper we use motivic integration and non-archimedean analytic geometry to study the singularities at infinity of the fibers of a polynomial map $f\colon \mathbb A^d_\mathbb C \to \mathbb A^1_\mathbb C$. We show that the motive $S_{f,a}^{\infty}$ of the motivic nearby cycles at infinity of $f$ for a value $a$ is a motivic generalization of the classical invariant $λ_f(a)$, an integer that measures a lack of equisingularity at infinity in the fiber $f^{-1}(a)$. We then introduce a non-archimedean analytic nearby fiber at infinity $\mathcal F_{f,a}^{\infty}$ whose motivic volume recovers …
In this article, we study the commutativity between the pull-back and the push-forward functors on constructible functions in Cluckers--Loeser motivic integration.
We investigate connections between Lipschitz geometry of real algebraic varieties and properties of their arc spaces. For this purpose we develop motivic integration in the real algebraic set-up. We construct a motivic measure on the space of real analytic arcs. We use this measure to define a real motivic integral which admits a change of variables formula not only for the birational but also for generically one-to-one Nash maps. As a consequence we obtain an inverse mapping theorem which holds for continuous rational maps and, more generally, for generically arc-analytic maps. These maps app…
We prove the equivalence between the categories of motives of rigid analytic varieties over a perfectoid field $K$ of mixed characteristic and over the associated (tilted) perfectoid field $K^{\flat}$ of equal characteristic. This can be considered as a motivic generalization of a theorem of Fontaine and Wintenberger, claiming that the Galois groups of $K$ and $K^\flat$ are isomorphic. A main tool for constructing the equivalence is Scholze's theory of perfectoid spaces.
Let $f$ be a polynomial in $n$ variables over some number field and $Z$ a subscheme of affine $n$-space. The notion of motivic oscillation index of $f$ at $Z$ was initiated by Cluckers (2008) and Cluckers-Mustaţǎ-Nguyen (2019). In this paper we elaborate on this notion and raise several questions. The first one is stability under base field extension; this question is linked to a deep understanding of the density of non-archimedean local fields over which Igusa's local zeta functions of $f$ has a pole with given real part. The second one is around Igusa's conjecture for exponential sums with b…
