We study the scheme of formal arcs on a singular algebraic variety and its images under truncations. We prove a rationality result for the Poincare series of these images which is an analogue of the rationality of the Poincare series associated to p-adic points on a p-adic variety. The main tools which are used are semi-algebraic geometry in spaces of power series and motivic integration (a notion introduced by M. Kontsevich). In particular we develop the theory of motivic integration for semi-algebraic sets of formal arcs on singular algebraic varieties, we prove a change of variable formula for birational morphisms and we prove a geometric analogue of a result of Oesterle.
We study function germs on toric varieties which are nondegenerate for their Newton diagram. We express their motivic Milnor fibre in terms of their Newton diagram. We extend a formula for the motivic nearby fibre to the case of a toroidal degeneration. We illustrate this by some examples.
We elaborate notions of integration over the space of arcs factorized by the natural $C^*$-action and over the space of non-parametrized arcs (branches). There are offered two motivic versions of the zeta function of the classical monodromy transformation of a germ of an analytic function on a smooth space. We indicate a direct formula which connects the naive motivic zeta function of J. Denef and F. Loeser with the classical monodromy zeta function.
Motivic measure on the space of functions was introduced by Campillo, Delgado and Gusein-Zade as an analog of the motivic measure on the space of arcs . In this paper we prove that the measure on the space of functions can be related to the motivic measure on the space of arcs by a factor, which can be defined explicitly in geometric terms. This provides a possibility to rewrite motivic integrals over the space of functions as integrals over the union of all symmetric powers of the space of arcs.
Let $f$ be a germ of complex analytic function at $({\mathbf{C}}^{d+1}, 0)$ such that its zero level defines an irreducible germ of quasi-ordinary hypersurface $(S,0)$. We describe the motivic Igusa zeta function, the motivic Milnor fibre and the Hodge-Steenbrink spectrum of $f$ at 0 in terms of topological invariants of the quasi-ordinary hypersurface $(S,0)$.
The geometric motivic Poincaré series of a germ $(S,0)$ of complex algebraic variety takes into account the classes in the Grothendieck ring of the jets of arcs through $(S,0)$. Denef and Loeser proved that this series has a rational form. We give an explicit description of this invariant when $(S,0)$ is an irreducible germ of quasi-ordinary hypersurface singularity in terms of the Newton polyhedra of the logarithmic jacobian ideals. These ideals are determined by the characteristic monomials of a quasi-ordinary branch parametrizing $(S,0)$.
A functional equation for the motivic integral corresponding to the Milnor number of an arc is derived using the Denef-Loeser formula for the change of variables. Its solution is a function of five auxiliary parameters, it is unique up to multiplication by a constant and there is a simple recursive algorithm to find its coefficients. The method is universal enough and gives, for example, equations for the integral corresponding to the intersection number over the space of pairs of arcs and over the space of unordered tuples of arcs.
We investigate connections between Lipschitz geometry of real algebraic varieties and properties of their arc spaces. For this purpose we develop motivic integration in the real algebraic set-up. We construct a motivic measure on the space of real analytic arcs. We use this measure to define a real motivic integral which admits a change of variables formula not only for the birational but also for generically one-to-one Nash maps. As a consequence we obtain an inverse mapping theorem which holds for continuous rational maps and, more generally, for generically arc-analytic maps. These maps app…
In this article we prove two results concerning the motivic Milnor fibres $S^ε(f)$ associated to a map germ $f: (\mathbb{R}^n,0)\to(\mathbb{R},0)$, defined by G. Comte and G. Fichou. Firstly, we prove that if $f,g:(\mathbb{R}^n,0)\to(\mathbb{R},0)$ are arc-analytically equivalent germs of Nash functions then the virtual Poincaré polynomial of the corresponding motivic Milnor fibres are equal. This extends (and provides a new proof) of a result of G. Fichou. Secondly, let $T\subset\mathbb{R}^m$ be a real algebraic set and $f: T\times(\mathbb{R}^n,0)\to\mathbb{R}$ a polynomial function of polyno…
The Poincare series of a multi-index filtration on the ring of germs of functions can be written as a certain integral with respect to the Euler characteristic over the projectivization of the ring. Here this integral is considered with respect to the generalized Euler characteristic with values in the Grothendieck ring of varieties. For the filtration defined by orders of functions on the components of a plane curve singularity $C$ and for the so called divisorial filtration for a modification of $(\C^2,0)$ by a sequence of blowing-ups there are given formulae for this integral in terms of an…
We define motivic Milnor fiber of cyclic $L_\infty$-algebras of dimension three using the method of Denef and Loeser of motivic integration. It is proved by Nicaise and Sebag that the topological Euler characteristic of the motivic Milnor fiber is equal to the Euler characteristic of the étale cohomology of the analytic Milnor fiber. We prove that the value of Behrend function on the germ moduli space determined by $L$ is equal to the Euler characteristic of the analytic Milnor fiber. Thus we prove that Behrend function depends only on the formal neighborhood of the moduli space.
We define a natural filtration on the ring ${\cal O}_{V,0}$ of germs of functions on a germ of a complex analytic variety $(V,0)$ related with the geometry of arcs on the variety and describe some properties of it.
We target multivariable series associated with resolutions of complex analytic normal surface singularities. In general, the equivariant multivariable analytical and topological Poincaré series are well-defined and have good properties only if the link is a rational homology sphere. We wish to create a model when this assumption is not valid: we analyse the case of cusps. For such germs we define even the motivic versions of these two series, we prove that they are equal, and we provide explicit combinatorial expression for them. This is done via a motivic multivariable series associated with …
We present a decomposition of the space of twisted arcs of a toric stack. As a consequence, we give a combinatorial description of the motivic integral associated to a torus-invariant divisor of a toric stack.
We prove a 1999 conjecture of Veys, which says that the opposite of the log canonical threshold is the only possible pole of maximal order of Denef and Loeser's motivic zeta function associated with a germ of a regular function on a smooth variety over a field of characteristic zero. We apply similar methods to study the weight function on the Berkovich skeleton associated with a degeneration of Calabi-Yau varieties. Our results suggest that the weight function induces a flow on the non-archimedean analytification of the degeneration towards the Kontsevich-Soibelman skeleton.
The geometric motivic Poincaré series of a variety, which was introduced by Denef and Loeser, takes into account the classes in the Grothendieck ring of the sequence of jets of arcs in the variety. Denef and Loeser proved that this series has a rational form. We describe it in the case of an affine toric variety of arbitrary dimension. The result, which provides an explicit set of candidate poles, is expressed in terms of the sequence of Newton polyhedra of certain monomial ideals, which we call logarithmic jacobian ideals, associated to the modules of differential forms with logarithmic poles…
We establish a trace formula for rigid varieties $X$ over a complete discretely valued field, which relates the set of unramified points on $X$ to the Galois action on its étale cohomology. We develop a theory of motivic integration for formal schemes of pseudo-finite type over a complete discrete valuation ring $R$, and we introduce the Weil generating series of a regular formal $R$-scheme $\mathfrak{X}$ of pseudo-finite type, via the construction of a Gelfand-Leray form on its generic fiber. Our trace formula yields a cohomological interpretation of this Weil generating series. When $\mathfr…
We give here a description of the motivic Poincare series in case of irreducible quasi-ordinary hypersurfaces in all dimension. We give an explicit formula in a particular case. Finally, for such singularities, we give a constructive proof of a result of rationnality of such series proved by Denef and Loeser in all generality.
Let X be a nonsingular algebraic variety in characteristic zero. To an effective divisor on X Kontsevich has associated a certain 'motivic integral', living in a completion of the Grothendieck ring of algebraic varieties. He used this invariant to show that birational Calabi-Yau varieties have the same Hodge numbers. Then Denef and Loeser introduced the motivic (Igusa) zeta function, associated to a regular function on X, which specializes to both the classical p-adic Igusa zeta function and the topological zeta function, and also to Kontsevich's invariant. This paper treats a generalization t…
Let $(X,x)$ be a germ of real or complex analytic space and $\mathcal{A}_{(X,x)}$ the space of germs of arcs on $(X,x)$. Let us consider $F_{x}: (X,x) \to (Y,y)$ a germ of a morphism and denote by $\mathcal{F}_{x}: \mathcal{A}_{(X,x)} \to \mathcal{A}_{(Y,y)}$ the induced morphism at the level of arcs. In this paper, we try to emphasize the analogies between the metric or local topological properties of $F_{x}$ and those of $\mathcal{F}_{x}$. We then define the notions of Nash sequence of multiplicities, Nash sequence of Hilbert-Samuel functions and Nash sequence of diagram of initial exponents…
We study outer Lipschitz geometry of real semialgebraic or, more general, definable in a polynomially bounded o-minimal structure over the reals, surface germs. In particular, any definable Hölder triangle is either Lipschitz normally embedded or contains some "abnormal" arcs. We show that abnormal arcs constitute finitely many "abnormal zones" in the space of all arcs, and investigate geometric and combinatorial properties of abnormal surface germs. We establish a strong relation between geometry and combinatorics of abnormal Hölder triangles.
In this paper we explore the generalized Nash problem for arcs on a germ of smooth surface: given two prime divisors above its special point, to determine whether the arc space of one of them is included in the arc space of the other one. We prove that this problem is combinatorial and we explore its relation with several notions of adjacency of plane curve singularities.
We study loci of arcs on a smooth variety defined by order of contact with a fixed subscheme. Specifically, we establish a Nash-type correspondence showing that the irreducible components of these loci arise from (intersections of) exceptional divisors in a resolution of singularities. We show also that these loci account for all the valuations determined by irreducible cylinders in the arc space. Along the way, we recover in an elementary fashion-without using motivic integration-results of the third author relating singularities to arc spaces. Moreover, we extend these results to give a jet-…
In a previous paper, the authors introduced a filtration on the ring ${\cal O}_{V,0}$ of germs of functions on a germ $(V,0)$ of a complex analytic variety defined by arcs on the singularity and called the arc filtration. The Poincaré series of this filtration were computed for simple surface singularities in the 3-space. Here they are computed for surface singularities from Arnold's lists including uni- and bimodular ones. The classification of the unimodular singularities by these Poincaré series turns out to be in accordance with their hierarchy defined by E. Brieskorn using the adjacency r…
We use the theory of motivic integration for singular spaces to give a characterization of minimal log discrepencies in terms of the codimension of certain subsets of spaces of arcs. This is done for arbitrary pairs $(X,Y)$, with $X$ normal and Q-Gorenstein. As a first application, we prove a precise version of Inversion of Adjunction, in the case when the ambient variety is smooth. Another application concerns the semicontinuity of minimal log discrepancies on smooth varieties.
