We present an argument for proving the existence of local stable and unstable manifolds in a general abstract setting and under very weak hyperbolicity conditions.
For a right-invariant control system on a flag manifold $\mathbb{F}_Θ$ of a real semisimple Lie group, we relate the $\mathfrak{a}$-Lyapunov exponents to the Lyapunov exponents of the system over regular points. Moreover, we adapt the concept of partial hyperbolicity from the theory of smooth dynamical systems to control-affine systems, and we completely characterize the partially hyperbolic chain control sets on $\mathbb{F}_Θ$.
For 3D reaction--diffusion equations, we study the problem of existence or nonexistence of an inertial manifold that is normally hyperbolic or absolutely normally hyperbolic. We present a system of two coupled equations with a cubic nonlinearity which does not admit a normally hyperbolic inertial manifold. An example separating the classes of such equations admitting an inertial manifold and a normally hyperbolic inertial manifold is constructed. Similar questions concerning absolutely normally hyperbolic inertial manifolds are discussed.
We present three examples to illustrate that in the continuation of a family of normally hyperbolic $C^1$ manifolds, the normal hyperbolicity may break down as the continuation parameter approaches a critical value even though the corresponding generalized Lyapunov-type numbers remain uniformly bounded below their critical values throughout the process. In the first example, a $C^1$ manifold still exists at the critical parameter value, but it is no longer normally hyperbolic. In the other two examples, at the critical parameter value the family of $C^1$ manifolds converges to a nonsmooth inva…
We prove that every sectional-Anosov flow of a compact 3-manifold $M$ exhibits a finite collection of hyperbolic attractors and singularities whose basins form a dense subset of $M$. Applications to the dynamics of sectional-Anosov flows on compact 3-manifolds include a characterization of essential hyperbolicity, sensitivity to the initial conditions (improving \cite{ams}) and a relationship between the topology of the ambient manifold and the denseness of the basin of the singularities.
In this note we derive an upper bound for the Hausdorff dimension of the stable set of a hyperbolic set $Λ$ of a $C^2$ diffeomorphisms on a $n$-dimensional manifold. As a consequence we obtain that $\dim_H W^s(Λ)=n$ is equivalent to the existence of a SRB-measure. We also discuss related results in the case of expanding maps.
We show that any diffeomorphism of a compact manifold can be C1 approximated by diffeomorphisms exhibiting a homoclinic tangency or by diffeomorphisms having a partial hyperbolic structure.
We prove several new versions of the Hadamard-Perron Theorem, which relates infinitesimal dynamics to local dynamics for a sequence of local diffeomorphisms, and in particular establishes the existence of local stable and unstable manifolds. Our results imply the classical Hadamard-Perron Theorem in both its uniform and non-uniform versions, but also apply much more generally. We introduce a notion of "effective hyperbolicity" and show that if the rate of effective hyperbolicity is asymptotically positive, then the local manifolds are well-behaved with positive asymptotic frequency. By applyin…
A vector field X is called a star flow if every periodic orbit, of any vector field C1-close to X, is hyperbolic. It is known that the chain recurrence classes of a generic star flow X on a 3 or 4 manifold are either hyperbolic or singular hyperbolic (see [MPP] for 3-manifolds and [GLW] on 4-manifolds). As it is defined, the notion of singular hyperbolicity forces the singularities in the same class to have the same index. However, in higher dimension (i.e $\geq 5$) \cite{BdL} shows that singularities of different indices may be robustly in the same chain recurrence class of a star flow. There…
In this article we prove that if a flow exhibits a partially hyperbolic attractor and it has two periodic saddles with different indices, and the stable index of one of them coincides with the dimension of strongly stable bundles, then it does not satisfy the specification property. As an application, we prove that all Geometric Lorenz attractors do not satisfy the specification property.
We study the specification property for partially hyperbolic dynamical systems. In particular, we show that if a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism has two saddles with different indices, and stable manifold of one of them coincides with the strongly stable leaf, then it does not satisfy the specification property. As an application, we prove that there exists a $C^1$-open and dense subset $\mathcal P$ in the set of robustly non-hyperbolic transitive diffeomorphisms on a three dimensional closed manifold such that diffeomorphisms in $\mathcal P$ do not satisfy the specification property.
It is known that volume hyperbolicity (partial hyperbolicity and uniform expansion or contraction of the volume in the extremal bundles) is a necessary condition for robust transitivity or robust chain recurrence hence for tameness. In this paper, on any 3-manifold we build examples of quasi-attractors which are volume hyperbolic and wild at the same time. As a main corollary, we see that, for any closed 3-manifold $M$, the space $\mathrm{Diff}^1(M)$ admits a non-empty open set where every $C^1$-generic diffeomorphism has no attractors or repellers. The main tool of our construction is the not…
We prove that a Hamiltonian star system, defined on a 2d-dimensional symplectic manifold M, is Anosov. As a consequence we obtain the proof of the stability conjecture for Hamiltonians. This generalizes the 4-dimensional results in [6].
We prove that any diffeomorphism of a compact manifold can be approximated in topology C1 by another diffeomorphism exhibiting a homoclinic bifurcation (a homoclinic tangency or a heterodimensional cycle) or by one which is essentially hyperbolic (it has a finite number of transitive hyperbolic attractors with open and dense basin of attraction).
This work is motivated by mathematical questions arising in differential equation models for autocatalytic reactions. In particular, this paper answers an open question posed by Guckenheimer and Scheper [SIAM J. Appl. Dyn. Syst. 10-1 (2011), pp. 92-128] and provides a more general theoretical approach to parts of the work by Gucwa and Szmolyan [Discr. Cont. Dyn. Sys.-S. 2-4 (2009), pp. 783-806]. We extend the local theory of singularities in fast-slow polynomial vector fields to classes of unbounded manifolds which lose normal hyperbolicity due to an alignment of the tangent and normal bundles…
This thesis attempts to contribute to the study of differentiable dynamics both from a semi-local and global point of view. The center of study is differentiable dynamics in manifolds of dimension 3 where we are interested in the understanding of the existence and structure of attractors as well as dynamical and topological implications of the existence of a global partially hyperbolic splitting. The main contributions are new examples of dynamics without attractors where we get a quite complete description of the dynamics around some wild homoclinic classes and two results on dynamical cohere…
We study $C^1$-generic vector fields on closed manifolds without points accumulated by periodic orbits of different indices and prove that they exhibit finitely many sinks and sectional-hyperbolic transitive Lyapunov stable sets with residual basin of attraction. This represents a partial positive answer to conjectures in \cite{am}, the Palis conjecture \cite{pa} and extend the Araujo's thesis to higher dimensions \cite{a}.
We study generic volume-preserving diffeomorphisms on compact manifolds. We show that the following property holds generically in the $C^1$ topology: Either there is at least one zero Lyapunov exponent at almost every point, or the set of points with only non-zero exponents forms an ergodic component. Moreover, if this nonuniformly hyperbolic component has positive measure then it is essentially dense in the manifold (that is, it has a positive measure intersection with any nonempty open set) and there is a global dominated splitting. For the proof we establish some new properties of independe…

We prove that uniform hyperbolicity is invariant under topological conjugacy for dissipative polynomial automorphisms of C^2. Along the way we also show that a sufficient condition for hyperbolicity is that local stable and unstable manifolds of saddle points have uniform geometry.
We show the existence of a family of manifolds on which all (pointwise or absolutely) partially hyperbolic systems are dynamically coherent. This family is the set of 3-manifolds with nilpotent, non-abelian fundamental group. We further classify the partially hyperbolic systems on these manifolds up to leaf conjugacy. We also classify those systems on the 3-torus which do not have an attracting or repelling periodic 2-torus. These classification results allow us to prove some dynamical consequences, including existence and uniqueness results for measures of maximal entropy and quasi-attractors…
Let $(f_λ)_{λ\in Λ}$ be a holomorphic family of polynomial automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}^2$. Following previous work of Dujardin and Lyubich, we say that such a family is weakly stable if saddle periodic orbits do not bifurcate. It is an open question whether this property is equivalent to structural stability on the Julia set $J^*$ (that is, the closure of the set of saddle periodic points). In this paper we introduce a notion of regular point for a polynomial automorphism, inspired by Pesin theory, and prove that in a weakly stable family, the set of regular points moves holomorphically. It f…
In the paper, we show that for a generic $C^1$ vector field $X$ on a closed three dimensional manifold $M$, any isolated transitive set of $X$ is singular hyperbolic. It is a partial answer of the conjecture in \cite{MP}.
Let $f:M\rightarrow M$ be a $C^1$ diffeomorphism with a dominated splitting on a compact Riemanian manifold $M$ without boundary. We state and prove several sufficient conditions for the topological entropy of $f$ to be positive. The conditions deal with the dynamical behaviour of the (non-necessarily invariant) Lebesgue measure. In particular, if the Lebesgue measure is $δ$-recurrent then the entropy of $f$ is positive. We give counterexamples showing that these sufficient conditions are not necessary. Finally, in the case of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, we give a positive lower boun…
We study the existence and regularity of invariant graphs for bundle maps (or bundle correspondences with generating bundle maps motivated by ill-posed differential equations) having some relative partial hyperbolicity on non-trivial and non-locally-compact bundles. The regularity includes (uniform) $ C^0 $ continuity, Hölder continuity and smoothness. To illustrate the power of our results and methods, a number of applications to both well-posed and ill-posed semilinear differential equations and abstract infinite-dimensional dynamical systems are given. These applications include the existen…
An equilibrium of a delay differential equation (DDE) is absolutely stable, if it is locally asymptotically stable for all delays. We present criteria for absolute stability of DDEs with discrete time-delays. In the case of a single delay, the absolute stability is shown to be equivalent to asymptotic stability for sufficiently large delays. Similarly, for multiple delays, the absolute stability is equivalent to asymptotic stability for hierarchically large delays. Additionally, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a linear DDE to be hyperbolic for all delays. The latter conditions …
We provide a new approach to stable ergodicity of systems with dominated splittings, based on a geometrical analysis of global stable and unstable manifolds of hyperbolic points. Our method suggests that the lack of uniform size of Pesin's local stable and unstable manifolds - a notorious problem in the theory of non-uniform hyperbolicity - is often less severe than it appeas to be.
In this paper we study the breakdown of normal hyperbolicity and its consequences for reaction dynamics; in particular, the dividing surface, the flux through the dividing surface (DS), and the gap time distribution. Our approach is to study these questions using simple, two degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian models where calculations for the different geometrical and dynamical quantities can be carried out exactly. For our examples, we show that resonances within the normally hyperbolic invariant manifold may, or may not, lead to a `loss of normal hyperbolicity'. Moreover, we show that the onset o…
In this paper, we study stability properties of nonuniform hyperbolicity for evolution processes associated with differential equations in Banach spaces. We prove a robustness result of nonuniform hyperbolicity for linear evolution processes, that is, we show that the property of admitting a nonuniform exponential dichotomy is stable under perturbation. Moreover, we provide conditions to obtain uniqueness and continuous dependence of projections associated with nonuniform exponential dichotomies. We also present an example of evolution process in a Banach space that admits nonuniform exponenti…

In this paper we present a method for extending the blowup method, in the formulation of Krupa and Szmolyan, to flat slow manifolds that lose hyperbolicity beyond any algebraic order. Although these manifolds have infinite co-dimension, they do appear naturally in certain settings. For example in (a) the regularization of piecewise smooth systems by $\tanh$, (b) a model of aircraft landing dynamics, and finally (c) in a model of earthquake faulting. We demonstrate the approach on a simple model system and the examples (a) and (b).
