We investigate the behavior of the higher-order degrees, db_n, of a finitely presented group G. These db_n are functions from H^1(G;Z) to Z whose values are the degrees certain higher-order Alexander polynomials. We show that if def(G) is at least 1 or G is the fundamental group of a compact, orientable 3-manifold then db_n is a monotonically increasing function of n for n at least 1. This is false for general groups. As a consequence, we show that if a 4 manifold of the form X times S^1 admits a symplectic structure then X ``looks algebraically like'' a 3-manifold that fibers over S^1, supporting a positive answer to a question of Taubes. This generalizes a theorem of S. Vidussi and is an improvement on the previous results of the author. We also find new conditions on a 3-manifold X which will guarantee that the Thurston norm of f*(psi), for psi in H^1(X;\Z) and f:Y -> X a surjective map on pi_1, will be at least as large the Thurston norm of psi. When X and Y are knot complements, this gives a partial answer to a question of J. Simon.
More generally, we define Gamma-degrees, db_Gamma, corresponding to a surjective map G -> Gamma for which Gamma is poly-torsion-free-abelian. Under certain conditions, we show they satisfy a monotonicity condition if one varies the group. As a result, we show that these generalized degrees give obstructions to the deficiency of a group being positive and obstructions to a finitely presented group being the fundamental group of a compact, orientable 3-manifold.
We observe that Clay-Rolfsen's obstruction of bi-orderability, which uses the classical Alexander polynomial, is not strengthened by using the twisted Alexander polynomials for finite representations unlike many known applications of the Alexander polynomial. This is shown by studying the maximal ordered abelian quotient of bi-ordered groups.
We introduce $L^2$-Alexander torsions for 3-manifolds, which can be viewed as a generalization of the $L^2$-Alexander polynomial of Li--Zhang. We state the $L^2$-Alexander torsions for graph manifolds and we partially compute them for fibered manifolds. We furthermore show that given any irreducible 3-manifold there exists a coefficient system such that the corresponding $L^2$-torsion detects the Thurston norm.
We give a characterization for the Alexander Polynomials of closed orientable 3-manifolds M with first Betti number 1, as well as some partial results for the characterization problem for M having first Betti number > 1. We first prove an analogue of a theorem of Levine: that the product of an Alexander polynomial of M with a symmetric polynomial in the same number of variables having non 0 trace, is again an Alexander polynomial of a closed orientable 3-manifold. Using the fact that there exists M with Alexander polynomial = 1 for M with first Betti number 1, 2 or 3, we conclude that symmetri…
As an extension of Reshetikhin and Turaev's invariant, Costantino, Geer and Patureau-Mirand constructed $3$-manifold invariants in the setting of relative $G$-modular categories, which include both semisimple and non-semisimple ribbon tensor categories as examples. In this paper, we follow their method to construct a $3$-manifold invariant from Viro's $\mathfrak{gl}(1\vert 1)$-Alexander polynomial. We take lens spaces $L(7, 1)$ and $L(7, 2)$ as examples to show that this invariant can distinguish homotopy equivalent manifolds.
In a series of papers the authors proved that twisted Alexander polynomials detect fibered 3-manifolds, and they showed that this implies that a closed 3-manifold N is fibered if and only if S^1 x N is symplectic. In this note we summarize some of the key ideas of the proofs. We also give new evidence to the conjecture that if $ is a symplectic 4-manifold with a free S^1-action, then the orbit space is fibered.
We provide the twisted Alexander polynomials of finite abelian covers over three-dimensional manifolds whose boundary is a finite union of tori. This is a generalization of a well-known formula for the usual Alexander polynomial of knots in finite cyclic branched covers over the three-dimensional sphere.
We study a computational method of the hyperbolic Reidemeister torsion (also called in the literature the non-abelian Reidemeister torsion) induced by J. Porti for complete hyperbolic three-dimensional manifolds with cusps. The derivative of the twisted Alexander invariant for a hyperbolic knot exterior gives the hyperbolic torsion. We prove such a derivative formula of the twisted Alexander invariant for hyperbolic link exteriors like the Whitehead link exterior. We provide the framework for the derivative formula to work, which consists of assumptions on the topology of the manifold and on t…
Let M be a 4-manifold which admits a free circle action. We use twisted Alexander polynomials to study the existence of symplectic structures and the minimal complexity of surfaces in M. The results on the existence of symplectic structures summarize previous results of the authors in [FV08a,FV08,FV07]. The results on surfaces of minimal complexity are new.
We introduce twisted Alexander norms of a compact connected orientable 3-manifold with first Betti number bigger than one generalizing norms of McMullen and Turaev. We show that twisted Alexander norms give lower bounds on the Thurston norm of a 3-manifold. Using these we completely determine the Thurston norm of many 3-manifolds which can not be determined by norms of McMullen and Turaev.
Using recent results of Agol, Przytycki-Wise and Wise we show that twisted Alexander polynomials detect the Thurston norm of any irreducible 3-manifold which is not a closed graph manifold.
For a 3-manifold M, McMullen derived from the Alexander polynomial of M a norm on H^1(M, R) called the Alexander norm. He showed that the Thurston norm on H^1(M, R), which measures the complexity of a dual surface, is an upper bound for the Alexander norm. He asked if these two norms were equal on all of H^1(M,R) when M fibers over the circle. Here, I give examples which show that the answer to this question is emphatically no. This question is related to the faithfulness of the Gassner representations of the braid groups. The key tool used to understand this question is the Bieri-Neumann-Stre…
Every element in the first cohomology group of a 3--manifold is dual to embedded surfaces. The Thurston norm measures the minimal `complexity' of such surfaces. For instance the Thurston norm of a knot complement determines the genus of the knot in the 3--sphere. We show that the degrees of twisted Alexander polynomials give lower bounds on the Thurston norm, generalizing work of McMullen and Turaev. Our bounds attain their most concise form when interpreted as the degrees of the Reidemeister torsion of a certain twisted chain complex. We show that these lower bounds give the correct genus bou…
A classical result in knot theory says that the Alexander polynomial of a fibered knot is monic and that its degree equals twice the genus of the knot. This result has been generalized by various authors to twisted Alexander polynomials and fibered 3-manifolds. In this paper we show that the conditions on twisted Alexander polynomials are not only necessary but also sufficient for a 3-manifold to be fibered. By previous work of the authors this result implies that if a manifold of the form S^1 x N^3 admits a symplectic structure, then N fibers over S^1. In fact we will completely determine the…
In this paper we show that given any 3-manifold N and any non-fibered class in H^1(N;Z) there exists a representation such that the corresponding twisted Alexander polynomial is zero. This is obtained by extending earlier work of the authors, together with results of Agol and Wise on separability of 3-manifold groups. This result allows us to completely classify symplectic 4-manifolds with a free circle action, and to determine their symplectic cones.
Work of Ni and Zhang has shown that for the torus knot $T_{r,s}$ with $r>s>1$ every surgery slope $p/q \geq \frac{30}{67}(r^2-1)(s^2-1)$ is a characterizing slope. In this paper, we show that this can be lowered to a bound which is linear in $rs$, namely, $p/q\geq \frac{43}{4}(rs-r-s)$. The main technical ingredient in this improvement is to show that if $Y$ is an $L$-space bounding a sharp 4-manifold which is obtained by $p/q$-surgery on a knot $K$ in $S^3$ and $p/q$ exceeds $4g(K)+4$, then the Alexander polynomial of $K$ is uniquely determined by $Y$ and $p/q$. We also show that if $p/q$-sur…
For an irreducible orientable compact $3$-manifold $N$ with empty or incompressible toral boundary, the full $L^2$--Alexander torsion $τ^{(2)}(N,ϕ)(t)$ associated to any real first cohomology class $ϕ$ of $N$ is represented by a function of a positive real variable $t$. The paper shows that $τ^{(2)}(N,ϕ)$ is continuous, everywhere positive, and asymptotically monomial in both ends. Moreover, the degree of $τ^{(2)}(N,ϕ)$ equals the Thurston norm of $ϕ$. The result confirms a conjecture of J.~Dubois, S.~Friedl, and W.~Lück and addresses a question of W.~Li and W.~Zhang. Associated to any admissi…
We prove duality theorems for twisted Reidemeister torsions and twisted Alexander polynomials generalizing the results of Turaev. As a corollary we determine the parity of the degrees of twisted Alexander polynomials of 3-manifolds in many cases.
Let X be a finite CW complex. We show that the fundamental group of X is large if and only if there is a finite cover Y of X and a sequence of finite abelian covers \{Y_N\} of Y which satisfy b_1(Y_N)\geq N. We give some applications of this result to the study of hyperbolic 3--manifolds, mapping classes of surfaces and combinatorial group theory.
We continue the study of the twisted Novikov homology, introduced in our joint paper with H.Goda (arXiv:math.DG/0312374), and its generalizations. The main applications of the developed algebraic techniques are to the topology of 3-manifolds. We show in particular that the twisted Novikov homology of a 3-manifold M of zero Euler characteristic vanishes if and only if the corresponding twisted Alexander polynomial of the fundamental group of M is monic. We discuss the relations between the Thurston norm on 1-cohomology of a three-dimensional manifold and the twisted Novikov homology of this man…
We show that the $L^2$-Alexander torsion of a 3-manifold is symmetric. This can be viewed as a generalization of the symmetry of the Alexander polynomial of a knot.
We investigate Friedl-Lück's universal $L^2$-torsion for descending HNN extensions of finitely generated free groups, and so in particular for $F_n$-by-$\mathbb{Z}$ groups. This invariant induces a semi-norm on the first cohomology of the group which is an analogue of the Thurston norm for $3$-manifold groups. We prove that this Thurston semi-norm is an upper bound for the Alexander semi-norm defined by McMullen, as well as for the higher Alexander semi-norms defined by Harvey. The same inequalities are known to hold for $3$-manifold groups. We also prove that the Newton polytopes of the unive…
We study the topology of the boundary manifold of a line arrangement in CP^2, with emphasis on the fundamental group G and associated invariants. We determine the Alexander polynomial Delta(G), and more generally, the twisted Alexander polynomial associated to the abelianization of G and an arbitrary complex representation. We give an explicit description of the unit ball in the Alexander norm, and use it to analyze certain Bieri-Neumann-Strebel invariants of G. From the Alexander polynomial, we also obtain a complete description of the first characteristic variety of G. Comparing this with th…
We give upper and lower bounds on the leading coefficients of the $L^2$-Alexander torsions of a $3$-manifold $M$ in terms of hyperbolic volumes and of relative $L^2$-torsions of sutured manifolds obtained by cutting $M$ along certain surfaces. We prove that for numerous families of knot exteriors the lower and upper bounds are equal, notably for exteriors of 2-bridge knots. In particular we compute the leading coefficient explicitly for 2-bridge knots.
Morifuji computed the twisted Alexander polynomial of twist knots for nonabelian representations. In this paper we compute the twisted Alexander polynomial and the Reidemeister torsion of genus one two-bridge knots, a class of knots which includes twist knots. As an application, we give a formula for the Reidemeister torsion of the 3-manifold obtained by a Dehn surgery on a genus one two-bridge knot.
We prove that for "most" closed 3-dimensional manifolds $M$, the existence of a closed non singular one-form in a given cohomology class $u\in H^1 (M,\bf R)$ is equivalent to the fact that every twisted Alexander polynomial $Δ^H(M,u) \in {\bf Z}[G/\ker u]$ associated to a normal subgroup with finite index $H < π_1(M)$ has a unitary $u$-minimal term.
We study piecewise linear co-dimension two embeddings of closed oriented manifolds in Euclidean space, and show that any such embedding can always be isotoped to be a closed braid as long as the ambient dimension is at most five, extending results of Alexander (in ambient dimension three), and Viro and independently Kamada (in ambient dimension four). We also show an analogous result for higher co-dimension embeddings.
In the early 2000's Cochran and Harvey introduced non-commutative Alexander polynomials for 3-manifolds. Their degrees give strong lower bounds on the Thurston norm. In this paper we make the case that the vanishing of a certain Novikov-Sikorav homology module is the correct notion of a monic non-commutative Alexander polynomial. Furthermore we will use the opportunity to give new proofs of several statements about Novikov-Sikorav homology in the three-dimensional context.
The volume conjecture and its generalization state that the series of certain evaluations of the colored Jones polynomials of a knot would grow exponentially and its growth rate would be related to the volume of a three-manifold obtained by Dehn surgery along the knot. In this paper, we show that for the figure-eight knot the series converges in some cases and the limit equals the inverse of its Alexander polynomial.
We study incompressible surfaces constructed by Culler-Shalen theory in the context of twisted Alexander polynomials. For a $1$st cohomology class of a $3$-manifold the coefficients of twisted Alexander polynomials induce regular functions on the $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$-character variety. We prove that if an ideal point gives a Thurston norm minimizing non-separating surface dual to the cohomology class, then the regular function of the highest degree has a finite value at the ideal point.
Let N be a closed, oriented 3-manifold. A folklore conjecture states that S^1 x N admits a symplectic structure only if N admits a fibration over the circle. The purpose of this paper is to provide evidence to this conjecture studying suitable twisted Alexander polynomials of N, and showing that their behavior is the same as of those of fibered 3-manifolds. In particular, we will obtain new obstructions to the existence of symplectic structures and to the existence of symplectic forms representing certain cohomology classes of S^1 x N. As an application of these results we will show that S^1 x…
For a hyperbolic knot and a natural number n, we consider the Alexander polynomial twisted by the n-th symmetric power of a lift of the holonomy. We establish the asymptotic behavior of these twisted Alexander polynomials evaluated at unit complex numbers, yielding the volume of the knot exterior. More generally, we prove the asymptotic behavior for cusped hyperbolic manifolds of finite volume. The proof relies on results of Müller, and Menal-Ferrer and the last author. Using the uniformity of the convergence, we also deduce a similar asymptotic result for the Mahler measures of those polynomi…
We formulate and prove a profinite rigidity theorem for the twisted Alexander polynomials up to several types of finite ambiguity. We also establish torsion growth formulas of the twisted homology groups in a $\mathbb{Z}$-cover of a 3-manifold with use of Mahler measures. We examine several examples associated to Riley's parabolic representations of two-bridge knot groups and give a remark on hyperbolic volumes.
We give a short introduction to the theory of twisted Alexander polynomials of a 3--manifold associated to a representation of its fundamental group. We summarize their formal properties and we explain their relationship to twisted Reidemeister torsion. We then give a survey of the many applications of twisted invariants to the study of topological problems. We conclude with a short summary of the theory of higher order Alexander polynomials.
It is known that the Alexander polynomial detects fibered knots and 3-manifolds that fiber over the circle. In this note, we show that when the Alexander polynomial becomes inconclusive, the notion of "knot adjacency", studied in the paper "Knot adjacency, genus and essential tori" by the authors, can be used to obtain obstructions to fibering of knots and of 3-manifolds. As an application, given a fibered knot K', we construct infinitely many non-fibered knots that share the same Alexander module and the same Vassiliev invariants up to certain orders with K'. Our construction also provides, f…
In this paper we investigate the Alexander polynomial of (1,1)-knots, which are knots lying in a 3-manifold with genus one at most, admitting a particular decomposition. More precisely, we study the connections between the Alexander polynomial and a polynomial associated to a cyclic presentation of the fundamental group of an n-fold strongly-cyclic covering branched over the knot, which we call the n-cyclic polynomial. In this way, we generalize to all (1,1)-knots, with the only exception of those lying in S^2\times S^1, a result obtained by J. Minkus for 2-bridge knots and extended by the aut…
The classical abelian invariants of a knot are the Alexander module, which is the first homology group of the the unique infinite cyclic covering space of S^3-K, considered as a module over the (commutative) Laurent polynomial ring, and the Blanchfield linking pairing defined on this module. From the perspective of the knot group, G, these invariants reflect the structure of G^(1)/G^(2) as a module over G/G^(1) (here G^(n) is the n-th term of the derived series of G). Hence any phenomenon associated to G^(2) is invisible to abelian invariants. This paper begins the systematic study of invarian…
We develop an explicit skein theoretical algorithm to compute the Alexander polynomial of a 3-manifold from a surgery presentation employing the methods used in the construction of quantum invariants of 3-manifolds. As a prerequisite we establish and prove a rather unexpected equivalence between the topological quantum field theory constructed by Frohman and Nicas using the intersection homology of U(1)-representation varieties on the one side and the combinatorially constructed Hennings-TQFT based on the quasitriangular Hopf algebra ${\cal N}=\Z/2\ltimes \ext *\R^2$ on the other side. We find…
In this note we explore a connection between finite covers of surfaces and the Teichmüller polynomial of a fibered face of a hyperbolic 3--manifold. We consider the action of a homological pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism $ψ$ on the homology groups of a class of finite abelian covers of a surface $Σ_{g,n}$. Eigenspaces of the deck group actions on these covers are naturally parametrized by rational points on a torus. We show that away from the trivial eigenspace, the spectrum of the action of $ψ$ on these eigenspaces is bounded away from the dilatation of $ψ$. We show that the action $ψ$ on these e…
Given a transverse knot $K$ in a three dimensional contact manifold $(Y,α)$, in [13] Colin, Ghiggini, Honda and Hutchings define a hat version of embedded contact homology for $K$, that we call $\widehat{ECK}(K,Y,α)$, and conjecture that it is isomorphic to the knot Floer homology $\widehat{HFK}(K,Y)$. We define here a full version $ECK(K,Y,α)$ and generalise the definitions to the case of links. We prove then that, if $Y = S^3$, $ECK$ and $\widehat{ECK}$ categorify the (multivariable) Alexander polynomial of knots and links, obtaining expressions analogue to that for knot and link Floer homol…
We show that a regular isomorphism of profinite completion of the fundamental groups of two 3-manifolds $N_1$ and $N_2$ induces an isometry of the Thurston norms and a bijection between the fibered classes. We study to what extent does the profinite completion of knot groups distinguish knots and show that it distinguishes each torus knot and the figure eight knot among all knots. We show also that it distinguishes between hyperbolic knots with cyclically commensurable complements under the assumption that their Alexander polynomials have at least one zero which is not a root of unity.
Ribbon tangles are proper embeddings of tori and cylinders in the $4$-ball~$B^4$, "bounding" $3$-manifolds with only ribbon disks as singularities. We construct an Alexander invariant $\mathsf{A}$ of ribbon tangles equipped with a representation of the fundamental group of their exterior in a free abelian group $G$. This invariant induces a functor in a certain category $\mathsf{R}ib_G$ of tangles, which restricts to the exterior powers of Burau-Gassner representation for ribbon braids, that are analogous to usual braids in this context. We define a circuit algebra $\mathsf{C}ob_G$ over the op…
We define the higher-order Alexander modules $A_{n,i}(\mathcal{U})$ and higher-order degrees $δ_{n,i}(\mathcal{U})$ which are invariants of a complex hypersurface complement $\mathcal{U}$. These invariants come from the module structure of the homology of certain solvable covers of the hypersurface complement. Such invariants were originally developed by T. Cochran in [1] and S. Harvey in [8], and were used to study knots and 3-manifolds. In this paper, I generalize the result proved by C. Leidy and L. Maxim [22] from the plane curve complements to higher-dimensional hypersurface complements. …
Given a closed, oriented, connected 3-manifold, M, we define higher-order linking forms on the higher-order Alexander modules of M. These higher-order linking forms generalize similar linking forms for knots previously studied by the author, which were themselves generalizations of the classical Blanchfield linking form for a knot. We also investigate the effect of the construction known as "infection by a knot" on these linking forms.
Let N be a closed, oriented 3-manifold. A folklore conjecture states that $S^{1} \times N$ admits a symplectic structure if and only if $N$ admits a fibration over the circle. We will prove this conjecture in the case when N is irreducible and its fundamental group satisfies appropriate subgroup separability conditions. This statement includes 3-manifolds with vanishing Thurston norm, graph manifolds and 3-manifolds with surface subgroup separability (a condition satisfied conjecturally by all hyperbolic 3-manifolds). Our result covers, in particular, the case of 0-framed surgeries along knots…
We survey the cohomology jumping loci and the Alexander-type invariants associated to a space, or to its fundamental group. Though most of the material is expository, we provide new examples and applications, which in turn raise several questions and conjectures. The jump loci of a space X come in two basic flavors: the characteristic varieties, or, the support loci for homology with coefficients in rank 1 local systems, and the resonance varieties, or, the support loci for the homology of the cochain complexes arising from multiplication by degree 1 classes in the cohomology ring of X. The ge…
We define new higher-order Alexander modules $\mathcal{A}_n(C)$ and higher-order degrees $δ_n(C)$ which are invariants of the algebraic planar curve $C$. These come from analyzing the module structure of the homology of certain solvable covers of the complement of the curve $C$. These invariants are in the spirit of those developed by T. Cochran in \cite{C} and S. Harvey in \cite{H} and \cite{Har}, which were used to study knots, 3-manifolds, and finitely presented groups, respectively. We show that for curves in general position at infinity, the higher-order degrees are finite. This provides …
We study when the Thurston norm is detected by twisted Alexander polynomials associated to representations of the 3-manifold group to SL(2, C). Specifically, we show that the hyperbolic torsion polynomial determines the genus for a large class of hyperbolic knots in the 3-sphere which includes all special arborescent knots and many knots whose ordinary Alexander polynomial is trivial. This theorem follows from results showing that the tautness of certain sutured manifolds can be certified by checking that they are a product from the point of view of homology with coefficients twisted by an SL(…
Let M a 3-manifold with torus boundary which is a rational homology circle. We study deformations of reducible representations of p_1(M) into PSL_2(C) associated to a simple zero of the twisted Alexander polynomial. We also describe the local structure of the representation and character varieties.
We define an infinite sequence of new invariants, delta_n, of a group G that measure the size of the successive quotients of the derived series of G. In the case that G is the fundamental group of a 3-manifold, we obtain new 3-manifold invariants. These invariants are closely related to the topology of the 3-manifold. They give lower bounds for the Thurston norm which provide better estimates than the bound established by McMullen using the Alexander norm. We also show that the delta_n give obstructions to a 3-manifold fibering over S^1 and to a 3-manifold being Seifert fibered. Moreover, we s…
