We study the topology of the boundary manifold of a line arrangement in CP^2, with emphasis on the fundamental group G and associated invariants. We determine the Alexander polynomial Delta(G), and more generally, the twisted Alexander polynomial associated to the abelianization of G and an arbitrary complex representation. We give an explicit description of the unit ball in the Alexander norm, and use it to analyze certain Bieri-Neumann-Strebel invariants of G. From the Alexander polynomial, we also obtain a complete description of the first characteristic variety of G. Comparing this with the corresponding resonance variety of the cohomology ring of G enables us to characterize those arrangements for which the boundary manifold is formal.
We note an intimate connection between the Lefschetz Theorem for c-arrangements, and a theorem of Hironaka relating the complement of an arrangement to its boundary manifold. This results in a generalization of Hironaka's result.
Let A be a line arrangement in the complex projective plane CP2. We define and describe the inclusion map of the boundary manifold --the boundary of a close regular neighborhood of A-- in the exterior of the arrangement. We obtain two explicit descriptions of the map induced on the fundamental groups. These computations provide a new minimal presentation of the fundamental group of the complement.
There are several topological spaces associated to a complex hyperplane arrangement: the complement and its boundary manifold, as well as the Milnor fiber and its own boundary. All these spaces are related in various ways, primarily by a set of interlocking fibrations. We use cohomology with coefficients in rank 1 local systems on the complement of the arrangement to gain information on the homology of the other three spaces, and on the monodromy operators of the various fibrations.
We present the various constructions of new symplectic $4$-manifolds with non-negative signatures using the complex surfaces on the BMY line $c_1^2 = 9χ_h$, the Cartwright-Steger surfaces, the quotients of Hirzebruch's certain line-arrangement surfaces, along with the exotic symplectic $4$-manifolds constructed in \cite{AP2, AS}. In particular, our constructions yield to (i) an irreducible symplectic and infinitely many non-symplectic $4$-manifolds that are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to $(2n-1)CP^{2}\#(2n-1)\bar{CP}^{2}$ for each integer $n \geq 9$, (ii) the families of simply connecte…
We define a new topological invariant of line arrangements in the complex projective plane. This invariant is a root of unity defined under some combinatorial restrictions for arrangements endowed with some special torsion character on the fundamental group of their complements. It is derived from the peripheral structure on the group induced by the inclusion map of the boundary of a tubular neigborhood in the exterior of the arrangement. By similarity with knot theory, it can be viewed as an analogue of linking numbers. This is an orientation-preserving invariant for ordered arrangements. We …
Let A be an essential complex hyperplane arrangement in an n-dimensional complex vector space V. Let H denote the union of the hyperplanes, and M denote the complement to H in V. We develop the real-valued and circle-valued Morse theory for M and prove, in particular, that M has the homotopy type of a space obtained from a manifold fibered over a circle, by attaching cells of dimension n. We compute the Novikov homology of M for a large class of homomorphisms of the fundamental group of M to R.
The complement of an arrangement of hyperplanes in $\mathbb C^n$ has a natural bordification to a manifold with corners formed by removing (or "blowing up") tubular neighborhoods of the hyperplanes and certain of their intersections. When the arrangement is the complexification of a real simplicial arrangement, the bordification closely resembles Harvey's bordification of moduli space. We prove that the faces of the universal cover of the bordification are parameterized by the simplices of a simplicial complex $\mathcal{C}$, the vertices of which are the irreducible "parabolic subgroups" of th…
A venerable problem in combinatorics and geometry asks whether a given incidence relation may be realized by a configuration of points and lines. The classic version of this would ask for algebraic lines over some field or possibly real pseudolines: embedded circles (isotopic to $RP^1$) in the real projective plane. In this paper we investigate whether a configuration is realized by a collection of $2$-spheres embedded, in the symplectic, smooth, or topological (locally flat) categories, in the complex projective plane. We find obstructions to realizability in the topological category, which a…
Given a handle decomposition of a 4-manifold with boundary, and an open book decomposition of the boundary, we show how to produce a trisection diagram of a trisection of the 4-manifold inducing the given open book. We do this by making the original proof of the existence of relative trisections more explicit, in terms of handles. Furthermore, we extend this existence result to the case of 4-manifolds with multiple boundary components, and show how trisected 4-manifolds with multiple boundary components glue together.
In this paper it is shown that manifolds admitting minimal genus weakly reducible but irreducible Heegaard splittings contain an essential surface. This is an extension of a well known theorem of Casson-Gordon to manifolds with non-empty boundary. The situation for non-minimal genus Heegaard splittings is also investigated and it is shown that boundary stabilizations are stabilizations for manifolds which are boundary primitive.
This notes explores angle structures on ideally triangulated compact $3$-manifolds with high genus boundary. We show that the existence of angle structures implies the existence of a hyperbolic metric with totally geodesic boundary, and conversely each hyperbolic $3$-manifold with totally geodesic boundary has an ideal triangulation that admits angle structures.
We extend Turaev's definition of torsion invariants of 3-dimensional manifolds equipped with non-singular vector fields, by allowing (suitable) tangency circles to the boundary, and manifolds with non-zero Euler characteristic. We show that these invariants apply in particular to (the exterior of) Legendrian links in contact 3-manifolds. Our approach uses a combinatorial encoding of vector fields, based on standard spines. In this paper we extend this encoding from closed manifolds to manifolds with boundary.
Matveev introduced Borromean surgery on 3-manifolds, and proved that the equivalence relation on closed, oriented 3-manifolds generated by Borromean surgeries is characterized by the first homology group and the torsion linking pairing. Massuyeau generalized this result to closed, spin 3-manifolds, and the second author to compact, oriented 3-manifolds with boundary. In this paper we give a partial generalization of these results to compact, spin 3-manifolds with boundary.
In this paper, we investigate analytical and geometric properties of certain non-compact boundary-manifolds, namely manifolds of bounded geometry. One result are strong Bochner type vanishing results for the L^2-cohomology of these manifolds: if e.g. a manifold admits a metric of bounded geometry which outside a compact set has nonnegative Ricci curvature and nonnegative mean curvature (of the boundary) then its first relative L^2-cohomology vanishes (this in particular answers a question of Roe). We prove the Hodge-de Rham-theorem for L^2-cohomology of oriented boundary-manifolds of bounded g…
A compact Fuchsian manifold with boundary is a hyperbolic 3-manifold homeomorphic to $S_g \times [0; 1]$ such that the boundary component $S_g \times \{ 0\}$ is geodesic. We prove that a compact Fuchsian manifold with convex boundary is uniquely determined by the induced path metric on $S_g \times \{1\}$. We do not put further restrictions on the boundary except convexity.
We develop Morse theory for manifolds with boundary. Besides standard and expected facts like the handle cancellation theorem and the Morse lemma for manifolds with boundary, we prove that, under a topological assumption, a critical point in the interior of a Morse function can be moved to the boundary, where it splits into a pair of boundary critical points. As an application, we prove that every cobordism of manifolds with boundary splits as a union of left product cobordisms and right product cobordisms.
In this paper, we define a relative $L^2$-$ρ$-invariant for Dirac operators on odd-dimensional spin manifolds with boundary and show that they are invariants of the bordism classes of positive scalar curvature metrics which are collared near the boundary. As an application, we show that if a $4k+3$-dimensional spin manifold with boundary admits such a metric and if, roughly speaking, there exists a torsion element in the difference of the fundamental groups of the manifold and its boundary, then there are infinitely many bordism classes of such psc metrics on the given manifold. This result in…
Let W be a compact hyperbolic n-manifold with totally geodesic boundary. We prove that if n>3 then the holonomy representation of pi_1 (W) into the isometry group of hyperbolic n-space is infinitesimally rigid.
