We develop an explicit skein theoretical algorithm to compute the Alexander polynomial of a 3-manifold from a surgery presentation employing the methods used in the construction of quantum invariants of 3-manifolds. As a prerequisite we establish and prove a rather unexpected equivalence between the topological quantum field theory constructed by Frohman and Nicas using the intersection homology of U(1)-representation varieties on the one side and the combinatorially constructed Hennings-TQFT based on the quasitriangular Hopf algebra ${\cal N}=\Z/2\ltimes \ext *\R^2$ on the other side. We find that both TQFT's are $SL(2,\R)$-equivariant functors and also as such isomorphic. The $SL(2,\R)$-action in the Hennings construction comes from the natural action on $\cal N$ and in the case of the Frohman-Nicas theory from the Hard-Lefschetz decomposition of the U(1)-moduli spaces given that they are naturally Kähler. The irreducible components of this TQFT, corresponding to simple representations of $SL(2,\Z)$ and $Sp(2g,\Z)$, thus yield a large family of homological TQFT's by taking sums and products. We give several examples of TQFT's and invariants that appear to fit into this family, such as Milnor and Reidemeister Torsion, Seiberg-Witten theories, Casson type theories for homology circles á la Donaldson, higher rank gauge theories following Frohman and Nicas, and the $\Z/r$ reductions of Reshetikhin-Turaev theories over the cyclotomic integers $\Z[ζ_r]$. We also conjecture that the Hennings TQFT for quantum-${\mathfrak sl}_2$ is the product of the Reshetikhin-Turaev TQFT and such a homological TQFT.
We construct and study a new family of TQFTs based on nilpotent highest weight representations of quantum sl(2) at a root of unity indexed by generic complex numbers. This extends to cobordisms the non-semi-simple invariants defined in (arXiv:1202.3553) including the Kashaev invariant of links. Here the modular category framework does not apply and we use the ``universal construction''. Our TQFT provides a monoidal functor from a category of surfaces and their cobordisms into the category of graded finite dimensional vector spaces and their degree 0-morphisms and depends on the choice of a roo…
The theory of welded and extended welded knots is a generalization of classical knot theory. Welded (resp. extended welded) knot diagrams include virtual crossings (resp. virtual crossings and wen marks) and are equivalent under an extended set of Reidemeister-type moves. We present a new class of invariants for welded and extended welded knots and links using a multi-skein relation, following Z. Yang's approach for virtual knots. Using this skein-theoretic approach, we find sufficient conditions on the coefficients to obtain invariance under the extended Reidemeister moves appropriate to weld…
We study the maps induced on link Floer homology by elementary decorated link cobordisms. We compute these for births, deaths, stabilizations, and destabilizations, and show that saddle cobordisms can be computed in terms of maps in a decorated skein exact triangle that extends the oriented skein exact triangle in knot Floer homology. In particular, we completely determine the Alexander and Maslov grading shifts. As a corollary, we compute the maps induced by elementary cobordisms between unlinks. We show that these give rise to a $(1+1)$-dimensional TQFT that coincides with the reduced Khovan…
These lecture notes concern the algebraic geometry of the character variety of a finitely generated group in SL(2,C) from the point of view of skein modules. We focus on the case of surface and 3-manifolds groups and construct the Reidemeister torsion as a rational volume form on the character variety.
Diagrams and Reidemeister moves for links in a twisted S^1-bundle over an unorientable surface are introduced. Using these diagrams, we compute the Kauffman Bracket Skein Module (KBSM) of the connected sum of two projective spaces. In particular, we show that it has torsion. We also present a new computation of the KBSM of S^1 x S^2 and the lens spaces L(p,1).
For a 3-manifold $M$ with boundary, we study the Kauffman module with indeterminate equal to $-1+ε$ where $ε^2=0$. We conjecture an explicit relation between this module and the Reidemeister torsion of $M$ which we prove in particular cases. As a maybe useful tool, we then introduce a notion of twisted self-linking and prove that it satisfies the Kauffman relations at first order. These questions come from considerations on asymptotics of quantum invariants.
Given a mapping class f of an oriented surface Sigma and a lagrangian lambda in the first homology of Sigma, we define an integer n_{lambda}(f). We use n_{lambda}(f) (mod 4) to describe a universal central extension of the mapping class group of Sigma as an index-four subgroup of the extension constructed from the Maslov index of triples of lagrangian subspaces in the homology of the surface. We give two descriptions of this subgroup. One is topological using surgery, the other is homological and builds on work of Turaev and work of Walker. Some applications to TQFT are discussed. They are bas…
Khovanov homology is a categorification of the Jones polynomial, so it may be seen as a kind of quantum invariant of knots and links. Although polynomial quantum invariants are deeply involved with Vassiliev (aka. finite type) invariants, the relation remains unclear in case of Khovanov homology. Aiming at it, in this paper, we discuss a categorified version of Vassiliev skein relation on Khovanov homology. More precisely, we will show that the "genus-one" operation gives rise to a crossing change on Khovanov complexes. Invariance under Reidemeister moves turns out, and it enables us to extend…
In this survey paper we present results about link diagrams in Seifert manifolds using arrow diagrams, starting with link diagrams in $F\times S^1$ and $N\hat{\times}S^1$, where $F$ is an orientable and $N$ an unorientable surface. Reidemeister moves for such arrow diagrams make the study of link invariants possible. Transitions between arrow diagrams and alternative diagrams are presented. We recall results about %the knot group presentation for lens spaces and the Kauffman bracket and HOMFLYPT skein modules of some Seifert manifolds using arrow diagrams, namely lens spaces, a product of a di…
Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a field and let $G\subset \mathbb{F}\setminus \{0\}$ be a multiplicative subgroup. We consider the category $\mathcal{Cob}_G$ of $3$-dimensional cobordisms equipped with a representation of their fundamental group in $G$, and the category ${Vect}_{\mathbb{F},\pm G}$ of $\mathbb{F}$-linear maps defined up to multiplication by an element of $\pm G$. Using the elementary theory of Reidemeister torsions, we construct a "Reidemeister functor" from $Cob_G$ to ${Vect}_{\mathbb{F},\pm G}$. In particular, when the group $G$ is free abelian and $\mathbb{F}$ is the field of fractions …
Two link diagrams on compact surfaces are strongly equivalent if they are related by Reidemeister moves and orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the surfaces. They are stably equivalent if they are related by the two previous operations and adding or removing handles. Turaev and Turner constructed a link homology for each stable equivalence class by applying an unoriented topological quantum field theory (TQFT) to a geometric chain complex similar to Bar-Natan's one. In this paper, by using an unoriented homotopy quantum field theory (HQFT), we construct a link homology for each strong equ…
This survey covers some of the results contained in the papers by Costantino, Geer and Patureau (https://arxiv.org/abs/1202.3553) and by Blanchet, Costantino, Geer and Patureau (https://arxiv.org/abs/1404.7289). In the first one the authors construct two families of Reshetikhin-Turaev-type invariants of 3-manifolds, $\mathrm{N}_r$ and $\mathrm{N}^0_r$, using non-semisimple categories of representations of a quantum version of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ at a $2r$-th root of unity with $r \geqslant 2$. The secondary invariants $\mathrm{N}^0_r$ conjecturally extend the original Reshetikhin-Turaev quantum …
