Two welded (respectively virtual) link diagrams are homotopic if one may be transformed into the other by a sequence of extended Reidemeister moves, classical Reidemeister moves, and self crossing changes. In this paper, we extend Milnor's mu and bar mu invariants to welded and virtual links. We conclude this paper with several examples, and compute the mu invariants using the Magnus expansion and Polyak's skein relation for the mu invariants.
We consider several classes of knotted objects, namely usual, virtual and welded pure braids and string links, and two equivalence relations on those objects, induced by either self-crossing changes or self-virtualizations. We provide a number of results which point out the differences between these various notions. The proofs are mainly based on the techniques of Gauss diagram formulae.
The notion of a virtual knot introduced by L. Kauffman induces the notion of a virtual braid. It is closely related with a welded braid of R. Fenn, R. Rimanyi and C. Rourke. Alexander's and Markov's theorems for virtual knots and braids are proved. Similar results for welded knots and braids are also proved.
We show that any virtual or welded period of a classical knot $K$ can be realized as a classical period. A direct consequence is that a classical knot admits only finitely many virtual or welded periods.
In a previous paper, the authors proved that Milnor link-homotopy invariants modulo $n$ classify classical string links up to $2n$-move and link-homotopy. As analogues to the welded case, in terms of Milnor invariants, we give here two classifications of welded string links up to $2n$-move and self-crossing virtualization, and up to $V^{n}$-move and self-crossing virtualization, respectively.
The theory of welded and extended welded knots is a generalization of classical knot theory. Welded (resp. extended welded) knot diagrams include virtual crossings (resp. virtual crossings and wen marks) and are equivalent under an extended set of Reidemeister-type moves. We present a new class of invariants for welded and extended welded knots and links using a multi-skein relation, following Z. Yang's approach for virtual knots. Using this skein-theoretic approach, we find sufficient conditions on the coefficients to obtain invariance under the extended Reidemeister moves appropriate to weld…
In this paper we give the results of a computer search for biracks of small size and we give various interpretations of these findings. The list includes biquandles, racks and quandles together with new invariants of welded knots and examples of welded knots which are shown to be non-trivial by the new invariants. These can be used to answer various questions concerning virtual and welded knots. As an application we reprove the result that the Burau map from braids to matrices is non injective and give an example of a non-trivial virtual (welded) knot which cannot be distinguished from the unk…
Let $n$ be a positive integer. The aim of this paper is to study two local moves $V(n)$ and $V^{n}$ on welded links, which are generalizations of the crossing virtualization. We show that the $V(n)$-move is an unknotting operation on welded knots for any $n$, and give a classification of welded links up to $V(n)$-moves. On the other hand, we give a necessary condition for which two welded links are equivalent up to $V^{n}$-moves. This leads to show that the $V^{n}$-move is not an unknotting operation on welded knots except for $n=1$. We also discuss relations among $V^{n}$-moves, associated co…
Ribbon 2-knotted objects are locally flat embeddings of surfaces in 4-space which bound immersed 3-manifolds with only ribbon singularities. They appear as topological realizations of welded knotted objects, which is a natural quotient of virtual knot theory. In this paper we consider ribbon tubes and ribbon torus-links, which are natural analogues of string links and links, respectively. We show how ribbon tubes naturally act on the reduced free group, and how this action classifies ribbon tubes up to link-homotopy, that is when allowing each component to cross itself. At the combinatorial le…
Using Gauss diagrams, one can define the virtual bridge number ${\rm vb}(K)$ and the welded bridge number ${\rm wb}(K),$ invariants of virtual and welded knots with ${\rm wb}(K) \leq {\rm vb}(K).$ If $K$ is a classical knot, Chernov and Manturov showed that ${\rm vb}(K) = {\rm br}(K),$ the bridge number as a classical knot, and we ask whether the same thing is true for welded knots. The welded bridge number is bounded below by the meridional rank of the knot group $G_K$, and we use this to relate this question to a conjecture of Cappell and Shaneson. We show how to use other virtual and welded…
Jin and Lee proved the following: Suppose that $D_1, \dots, D_n$ are link diagrams. Given a link $L$ which is partitioned into sublinks $L_1, \dots, L_n$ admitting diagrams $D_1, \dots, D_n$ respectively, there is a diagram $D$ of $L$ whose restrictions to $L_1, \dots, L_n$ are isotopic to $D_1, \dots, D_n$, respectively. In this paper we show that a similar result does hold for welded links and does not for virtual links.
We study a local twist move on welded knots that is an analog of the virtualization move on virtual knots. Since this move is an unknotting operation we define an invariant, unknotting twist number, for welded knots. We relate the unknotting twist number with warping degree and welded unknotting number, and establish a lower bound on the twist number using Alexander quandle coloring. We also study the Gordian distance between welded knots by twist move and define the corresponding Gordian complex.
We define a generalization of virtual links to arbitrary dimensions by extending the geometric definition due to Carter et al. We show that many homotopy type invariants for classical links extend to invariants of virtual links. We also define generalizations of virtual link diagrams and Gauss codes to represent virtual links, and use such diagrams to construct a combinatorial biquandle invariant for virtual $2$-links. In the case of $2$-links, we also explore generalizations of Fox-Milnor movies to the virtual case. In addition, we discuss definitions extending the notion of welded links to h…
We define new notions of groups of virtual and welded knots (or links) and we study their relations with other invariants, in particular the Kauffman group of a virtual knot.
We succeed to generalize spun knots of classical 1-knots to the virtual 1-knot case by using the `spinning construction'. That, is, we prove the following: Let $Q$ be a spun knot of a virtual 1-knot $K$ by our method. The embedding type $Q$ in $S^4$ depends only on $K$. Furthermore we prove the following: The submanifolds, $Q$ and the embedded torus made from $K,$ defined by Satoh's method, in $S^4$ are isotopic. We succeed to generalize the above construction to the virtual 2-knot case. Note that Satoh's method says nothing about the virtual 2-knot case. Rourke's interpretation of Satoh's met…

We define an invariant of welded virtual knots from each finite crossed module by considering crossed module invariants of ribbon knotted surfaces which are naturally associated with them. We elucidate that the invariants obtained are non trivial by calculating explicit examples. We define welded virtual graphs and consider invariants of them defined in a similar way.
We introduce the multiplexing of a crossing, replacing a classical crossing of a virtual link diagram with multiple crossings which is a mixture of classical and virtual. For integers $m_{i}$ $(i=1,\ldots,n)$ and an ordered $n$-component virtual link diagram $D$, a new virtual link diagram $D(m_{1},\ldots,m_{n})$ is obtained from $D$ by the multiplexing of all crossings. For welded isotopic virtual link diagrams $D$ and $D'$, $D(m_{1},\ldots,m_{n})$ and $D'(m_{1},\ldots,m_{n})$ are welded isotopic. From the point of view of classical link theory, it seems very interesting that $D(m_{1},\ldots,…
In the present paper, we consider local moves on classical and welded diagrams: (self-)crossing change, (self-)virtualization, virtual conjugation, Delta, fused, band-pass and welded band-pass moves. Interrelationship between these moves is discussed and, for each of these move, we provide an algebraic classification. We address the question of relevant welded extensions for classical moves in the sense that the classical quotient of classical object embeds into the welded quotient of welded objects. As a by-product, we obtain that all of the above local moves are unknotting operations for wel…
We develop a calculus for diagrams of knotted objects. We define Arrow presentations, which encode the crossing informations of a diagram into arrows in a way somewhat similar to Gauss diagrams, and more generally w-tree presentations, which can be seen as `higher order Gauss diagrams'. This Arrow calculus is used to develop an analogue of Habiro's clasper theory for welded knotted objects, which contain classical link diagrams as a subset. This provides a 'realization' of Polyak's algebra of arrow diagrams at the welded level, and leads to a characterization of finite type invariants of welde…

We extend some classical results of Bankwitz, Crowell, and Murasugi to the setting of virtual links. For instance, we show that an alternating virtual link is split if and only if it is visibly split, and that the Alexander polynomial of any almost classical alternating virtual link is alternating. The first result is a consequence of an inequality relating the link determinant and crossing number for any non-split alternating virtual link. The second is a consequence of the matrix-tree theorem of Bott and Mayberry. We extend the first result to semi-alternating virtual links. We discuss the T…
Let $VB_n$, resp. $WB_n$ denote the virtual, resp. welded, braid group on $n$ strands. We study their commutator subgroups $VB_n' = [VB_n, VB_n]$ and, $WB_n' = [WB_n, WB_n]$ respectively. We obtain a set of generators and defining relations for these commutator subgroups. In particular, we prove that $VB_n'$ is finitely generated if and only if $n \geq 4$, and $WB_n'$ is finitely generated for $n \geq 3$. Also we prove that $VB_3'/VB_3'' =\mathbb{Z}_3 \oplus \mathbb{Z}_3 \oplus\mathbb{Z}_3 \oplus \mathbb{Z}^{\infty}$, $VB_4' / VB_4'' = \mathbb{Z}_3 \oplus \mathbb{Z}_3 \oplus \mathbb{Z}_3$, $WB…
We use the Bar-Natan Zh-correspondence to identify the generalized Alexander polynomial of a virtual knot with the Alexander polynomial of a two component welded link. We show that the Zh-map is functorial under concordance, and also that Satoh's Tube map (from welded links to ribbon knotted tori in $S^4$) is functorial under concordance. In addition, we extend classical results of Chen, Milnor, and Hillman on the lower central series of link groups to links in thickened surfaces. Our main result is that the generalized Alexander polynomial vanishes on any knot in a thickened surface which is …
Satoh has defined a map from virtual knots to ribbon surfaces embedded in $S^4$. Herein, we generalize this map to virtual $m$-links, and use this to construct generalizations of welded and extended welded knots to higher dimensions. This also allows us to construct two new geometric pictures of virtual $m$-links, including 1-links.
Cobordism of virtual string links on $n$ strands is a combinatorial generalization of link cobordism. There exists a bijection between virtual string links up to cobordisms and elements of the group $\mathbb{Z}^{n(n-1)}$. This paper also shows that virtual string links up to unwelded equivalence are classified by those groups. Finally, the related theory of welded string link cobordism is defined herein and shown to be trivial for string links with one component.
In the present paper we give a new method for converting virtual knots and links to virtual braids. Indeed the braiding method given in this paper is quite general, and applies to all the categories in which braiding can be accomplished. We give a unifying topological interpretation of virtuals and flats (virtual strings) and their isotopies via ribbon surfaces and abstract link diagrams. We also give reduced presentations for the virtual braid group, the flat virtual braid group, the welded braid group and several other categories of braids. The paper includes a discussion of the topological …

We define a second Steenrod square for virtual links, which is stronger than Khovanov homology for virtual links, toward constructing Khovanov-Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy type for virtual links. This induces the first meaningful nontrivial example of the second Steenrod square operator on the Khovanov homology for links in a 3-manifold other than the 3-sphere.
A flat virtual link is a finite collection of oriented closed curves $\mathfrak L$ on an oriented surface $M$ considered up to virtual homotopy, i.e., a composition of elementary stabilizations, destabilizations, and homotopies. Specializing to a pair of curves $(L_1,L_2)$, we show that the minimal number of intersection points of curves in the virtual homotopy class of $(L_1, L_2)$ equals to the number of terms of a generalization of the Anderson--Mattes--Reshetikhin Poisson bracket. Furthermore, considering a single curve, we show that the minimal number of self-intersections of a curve in i…
We define enhanced presentations of quandles via generators and relations with additional information comprising signed operations and an order structure on the set of generators. Such a presentation determines a virtual link diagram up to virtual moves. We list formal Reidemeister moves in which Tietze moves on the presented quandle are accompanied by corresponding changes to the order structure. Omitting the order structure corresponds to replacing virtual isotopy by welded isotopy.
Pseudodiagrams are knot or link diagrams where some of the crossing information is missing. Pseudoknots are equivalence classes of pseudodiagrams, where equivalence is generated by a natural set of Reidemeister moves. In this paper, we introduce a Gauss-diagrammatic theory for pseudoknots which gives rise to the notion of a virtual pseudoknot. We provide new, easily computable isotopy and homotopy invariants for classical and virtual pseudodiagrams. We also give tables of unknotting numbers for homotopically trivial pseudoknots and homotopy classes of homotopically nontrivial pseudoknots. Sinc…
A virtual $n$-string is a chord diagram with $n$ core circles and a collection of arrows between core circles. We consider virtual $n$-strings up to virtual homotopy, compositions of flat virtual Reidemeister moves on chord diagrams. Given a virtual 1-string $α$, Turaev associated a based matrix that encodes invariants of the virtual homotopy class of $α$. We generalize Turaev's method to associate a multistring based matrix to virtual $n$-strings, addressing an open problem of Turaev and constructing similar invariants for virtual homotopy classes of virtual $n$-strings.
We describe a method of encoding various types of link diagrams, including those with classical, flat, rigid, welded, and virtual crossings. We show that this method may be used to encode link diagrams, up to equivalence, in a notation whose length is a cubic function of the number of 'riser marks'. For classical knots, the minimal number of such marks is twice the bridge index, and a classical knot diagram in minimal bridge form with bridge index $b$ may be encoded in space $\mathcal{O}(b^2)$. A set of moves on the notation is defined. As a demonstration of the utility of the notation we give…
Homotopy classes of nanowords and nanophrases are combinatorial generalizations of virtual knots and links. Goussarov, Polyak and Viro defined finite type invariants for virtual knots and links via semi-virtual crossings. We extend their definition to nanowords and nanophrases. We study finite type invariants of low degrees. In particular, we show that the linking matrix and T invariant defined by Fukunaga are finite type of degree one and degree two respectively. We also give a finite type invariant of degree 4 for open homotopy of Gauss words.
A virtual string is a scheme of self-intersections of a closed curve on a surface. We study algebraic invariants of strings as well as two equivalence relations on the set of strings: homotopy and cobordism. We show that the homotopy invariants of strings form an infinite dimensional Lie group. We also discuss connections between virtual strings and virtual knots.
Two link diagrams are link homotopic if one can be transformed into the other by a sequence of Reidemeister moves and self crossing changes. Milnor introduced invariants under link homotopy called $\barμ$. Nanophrases, introduced by Turaev, generalize links. In this paper, we extend the notion of link homotopy to nanophrases. We also generalize $\barμ$ to the set of those nanophrases that correspond to virtual links.
V. Turaev introduced the theory of topology of words and phrases in 2005. This is a combinatorialy extension of the theory of virtual knots and links. In this paper we generalize the notion of homotopy of words and phrases and we give geometric meanings of the generalized homotopy of words. Moreover using the generalized homotopy theory of words and phrases, we extend some homotopy invariants of nanophrases to $S$-homotopy invariant of nanowords with some homotopy data $S$.

For a virtual $n$-link $K$, we define a new virtual link $VD(K)$, which is invariant under virtual equivalence of $K$. The Dehn space of $VD(K)$, which we denote $DD(K)$, therefore has a homotopy type which is an invariant of $K$. We show that the quandle and even the fundamental group of this space are able to detect the virtual trefoil. We also consider applications to higher-dimensional virtual links.
This paper studies rotational virtual knot theory and its relationship with quantum link invariants. Every quantum link invariant for classical knots and links extends to an invariant of rotational virtual knots and links. The paper sets up the background virtual knot theory, defines rotational virtual knot theory, studies an extension of the bracket polynomial and the Manturov parity bracket for rotationals. We give examples of links that are not detected by the bracket polynomial but are detected by the extended parity bracket. Then the general frameworks for oriented and unoriented quantum …
Biquandles are generalizations of quandles. As well as quandles, biquandles give us many invariants for oriented classical/virtual/surface links. Some invariants derived from biquandles are known to be stronger than those from quandles for virtual links. However, we have not found an essentially refined invariant for classical/surface links so far. In this paper, we give an explicit one-to-one correspondence between biquandle colorings and quandle colorings for classical/surface links. We also show that biquandle homotopy invariants and quandle homotopy invariants are equivalent. As a byproduc…
Associated to a Thurston map $f: S^2 \to S^2$ with postcritical set $P$ are several different invariants obtained via pullback: a relation on the set of free homotopy classes of curves in $S^2- P$, a linear operator on the free $\R$-module generated by these homotopy classes of curves, a virtual endomorphism on the pure mapping class group, an analytic self-map of an associated Teichmueller space, and an analytic self-correspondence on an associated moduli space. Viewing all of these objects as invariants of $f$, we investigate harmonious relationships between their properties.
The present paper is a review of the current state of Graph-Link Theory (graph-links are also closely related to homotopy classes of looped interlacement graphs), dealing with a generalisation of knots obtained by translating the Reidemeister moves for links into the language of intersection graphs of chord diagrams. In this paper we show how some methods of classical and virtual knot theory can be translated into the language of abstract graphs, and some theorems can be reproved and generalised to this graphical setting. We construct various invariants, prove certain minimality theorems and c…
We extend Milnor's mu-invariants of link homotopy to ordered (classical or virtual) tangles. Simple combinatorial formulas for mu-invariants are given in terms of counting trees in Gauss diagrams. Invariance under Reidemeister moves corresponds to axioms of Loday's diassociative algebra. The relation of tangles to diassociative algebras is formulated in terms of a morphism of corresponding operads.
