Knot adjacency and fibering

On a conjecture of Dunfield, Friedl and Jackson

In this short note, we show that the twisted Alexander polynomial associated to a parabolic SL(2,C)-representation detects genus and fibering of the twist knots. As a corollary, a conjecture of Dunfield, Friedl and Jackson is proved for the hyperbolic twist knots.

Alexander-Lin twisted polynomials

X.S. Lin's original definition of twisted Alexander knot polynomial is generalized for arbitrary finitely presented groups. J. Cha's fibering obstruction theorem is generalized. The group of a nontrivial virtual knot shown by L. Kauffman to have trivial Jones polynomial is seen also to have a faithful representation that yields a trivial twisted Alexander polynomial.

Knot adjacency and satellites

A knot K is called n-adjacent to the unknot, if K admits a projection containing n generalized crossings such that changing any m (no larger than n) of them yields a projection of the unknot. We show that a non-trivial satellite knot K is n-adjacent to the unknot, for some n>0, if and only if it is n-adjacent to the unknot in any companion solid torus. In particular, every model knot of K is n-adjacent to the unknot. Along the way of proving these results, we also show that 2-bridge knots of the form K_{p/q}, where p/q=[2q_1,2q_2] for some integers q_1,q_2, are precisely those knots that have …

Coverings of torus knots in $S^2\times S^1$ and universals

Let $t_{α,β}\subset S^2\times S^1$ be an ordinary fiber of a Seifert fibering of $S^2\times S^1$ with two exceptional fibers of order $α$. We show that any Seifert manifold with Euler number zero is a branched covering of $S^2\times S^1$ with branching $t_{α,β}$ if $α\geq3$. We compute the Seifert invariants of the Abelian covers of $S^2\times S^1$ branched along a $t_{α,β}$. We also show that $t_{2,1}$, a non-trivial torus knot in $S^2\times S^1$, is not universal.

Knot adjacency, genus and essential tori

A knot K is called n-adjacent to another knot K', if K admits a projection containing n generalized crossings such that changing any 0 < m \leq n of them yields a projection of K'. We apply techniques from the theory of sutured 3-manifolds, Dehn surgery and the theory of geometric structures of 3-manifolds to answer the question of the extent to which non-isotopic knots can be adjacent to each other. Homology cylinders and sutured manifolds for homologically fibered knots

Sutured manifolds defined by Gabai are useful in the geometrical study of knots and 3-dimensional manifolds. On the other hand, homology cylinders are in an important position in the recent theory of homology cobordisms of surfaces and finite-type invariants. We study a relationship between them by focusing on sutured manifolds associated with a special class of knots which we call {\it homologically fibered knots}. Twisted Alexander polynomials of hyperbolic links

In this paper we apply the twisted Alexander polynomial to study the fibering and genus detecting problems for oriented links. In particular we generalize a conjecture of Dunfield, Friedl and Jackson on the torsion polynomial of hyperbolic knots to hyperbolic links, and confirm it for an infinite family of hyperbolic 2-bridge links. Moreover we consider a similar problem for parabolic representations of 2-bridge link groups.

A determinant formula for the Jones polynomial of pretzel knots

This paper presents an algorithm to construct a weighted adjacency matrix of a plane bipartite graph obtained from a pretzel knot diagram. The determinant of this matrix after evaluation is shown to be the Jones polynomial of the pretzel knot by way of perfect matchings (or dimers) of this graph. The weights are Tutte's activity letters that arise because the Jones polynomial is a specialization of the signed version of the Tutte polynomial. Higher-Order Polynomial Invariants of 3-Manifolds Giving Lower Bounds for the Thurston Norm

We define an infinite sequence of new invariants, delta_n, of a group G that measure the size of the successive quotients of the derived series of G. In the case that G is the fundamental group of a 3-manifold, we obtain new 3-manifold invariants. These invariants are closely related to the topology of the 3-manifold. They give lower bounds for the Thurston norm which provide better estimates than the bound established by McMullen using the Alexander norm.
