We consider posets of lattice paths (endowed with a natural order) and begin the study of such structures. We give an algebraic condition to recognize which ones of these posets are lattices. Next we study the class of Dyck lattices (i.e., lattices of Dyck paths) and give a recursive construction for them. The last section is devoted to the presentation of a couple of open problems.
In analyzing balanced parentheses, we consider a group of related variables in Dyck paths. In the four-dimensional space, the Dyck triangle is constructed, i.e. an integer lattice with Dyck paths.
Dyck paths are among the most heavily studied Catalan families. We work with peaks and valleys to uniquely decompose Dyck paths into the simplest objects - prime fragments with a single peak. Each Dyck path is uniquely characterized by a set of peaks or a set of valleys. The appendix contains a python program with which the reader can factorize Dyck paths online.
We show that our algorithm for inverting the sweep map on (2n, n)-Dyck paths works for any (kn, n)-Dyck path, where k is an arbitrary positive integer.
It is known that both the number of Dyck paths with $2n$ steps and $k$ peaks, and the number of Dyck paths with $2n$ steps and $k$ steps at odd height follow the Narayana distribution. In this paper we present a bijection which explicitly illustrates this equinumeracy. Moreover, we extend this bijection to bilateral Dyck paths. The restriction to Dyck paths preserves the number of contacts.
Dyck paths (also balanced brackets and Dyck words) are among the most heavily studied Catalan families. This paper is a continuation of [2, 3]. In the paper we enumerate the terms of the OEIS A036991, Dyck numbers, and construct a concomitant bijection with symmetric Dyck paths. In the case of binary coding of Dyck paths we work with compact natural numbers after removing leading zeros. Analysis of binary suffixes, allowed us to obtain a bijection between arbitrary A036991 terms and symmetric A036991 terms which encode symmetric Dyck paths. The bijection generates a forest of unary non-interse…
We introduce the notion of pattern in the context of lattice paths, and investigate it in the specific case of Dyck paths. Similarly to the case of permutations, the pattern-containment relation defines a poset structure on the set of all Dyck paths, which we call the Dyck pattern poset. Given a Dyck path P, we determine a formula for the number of Dyck paths covered by P, as well as for the number of Dyck paths covering P. We then address some typical pattern-avoidance issues, enumerating some classes of pattern-avoiding Dyck paths. Finally, we offer a conjecture concerning the asymptotic beh…
Dyck paths with air pockets are obtained from ordinary Dyck paths by compressing maximal runs of down-steps into giant down-steps of arbitrary size. Using the kernel method, we consider partial Dyck paths with air pockets, both, from left to right and from right to left.
We show connection between Dyck paths with peaks of bounded height and random walks. The correspondence between a certain class of random walks and such Dyck paths allows us to develop a probabilistic perspective on Chebyshev polynomials.
The Catalan number has a lot of interpretations and one of them is the number of Dyck paths. A Dyck path is a lattice path from $(0,0)$ to $(n,n)$ which is below the diagonal line $y=x$. One way to generalize the definition of Dyck path is to change the end point of Dyck path, i.e. we define (generalized) Dyck path to be a lattice path from $(0,0)$ to $(m,n) \in \mathbb{N}^2$ which is below the diagonal line $y=\frac{n}{m}x$, and denote by $C(m,n)$ the number of Dyck paths from $(0,0)$ to $(m,n)$. In this paper, we give a formula to calculate $C(m,n)$ for arbitrary $m$ and $n$.
We introduce an equivalence relation on the set of Dyck paths and some operations on them. We determine a formula for the cardinality of those equivalence classes and use this information to obtain a combinatorial formula for the number of Dyck and Motzkin paths of a fixed length.
The well-known $q,t$-Catalan sequence has two combinatorial interpretations as weighted sums of ordinary Dyck paths: one is Haglund's area-bounce formula, and the other is Haiman's dinv-area formula. The zeta map was constructed to connect these two formulas: it is a bijection from ordinary Dyck paths to themselves, and it takes dinv to area, and area to bounce. Such a result was extended for $k$-Dyck paths by Loehr. The zeta map was extended by Armstrong-Loehr-Warrington for a very general class of paths. In this paper, We extend the dinv-area-bounce result for $\vec{k}$-Dyck paths by: i) giv…
We give a description of the well known Zeta map on Dyck paths which sends the dinv, area statistics to the area, bounce statistics. Our description uses Dyck paths area sequences and can be implemented easily.
In this paper we study a subfamily of a classic lattice path, the \emph{Dyck paths}, called \emph{restricted $d$-Dyck} paths, in short $d$-Dyck. A valley of a Dyck path $P$ is a local minimum of $P$; if the difference between the heights of two consecutive valleys (from left to right) is at least $d$, we say that $P$ is a restricted $d$-Dyck path. The \emph{area} of a Dyck path is the sum of the absolute values of $y$-components of all points in the path. We find the number of peaks and the area of all paths of a given length in the set of $d$-Dyck paths. We give a bivariate generating functio…
Motivated by independent results of Bizley and Duchon, we study rational Dyck paths and their subset of factor-free elements. On the one hand, we give a bijection between rational Dyck paths and regular Dyck paths with ascents colored by factor-free words. This bijection leads to a new statistic based on the reducibility level of the paths for which we provide a corresponding formula. On the other hand, we prove an inverse relation for certain sequences defined via partial Bell polynomials, and we use it to derive a formula for the enumeration of factor-free words. In addition, we give alterna…
Raised $k$-Dyck paths are a generalization of $k$-Dyck paths that may both begin and end at a nonzero height. In this paper, we develop closed formulas for the number of raised $k$-Dyck paths from $(0,α)$ to $(\ell,β)$ for all height pairs $α,β\geq 0$, all lengths $\ell \geq 0$, and all $k \geq 2$. We then enumerate raised $k$-Dyck paths with a fixed number of returns to ground, a fixed minimum height, and a fixed maximum height, presenting generating functions (in terms of the generating functions $C_k(t)$ for the $k$-Catalan numbers) when closed formulas aren't tractable. Specializing our re…
We show bijectively that Dyck paths with all peaks at odd height are counted by the Motzkin numbers and Dyck paths with all peaks at even height are counted by the Riordan numbers.
The number of Dyck paths of semilength $n$ is famously $C_n$, the $n$th Catalan number. This fact follows after noticing that every Dyck path can be uniquely parsed according to a context-free grammar. In a recent paper, Zeilberger showed that many restricted sets of Dyck paths satisfy different, more complicated grammars, and from this derived various generating function identities. We take this further, highlighting some combinatorial results about Dyck paths obtained via grammatical proof and generalizing some of Zeilberger's grammars to infinite families.
Skew Dyck paths are a variation of Dyck paths, where additionally to steps $(1,1)$ and $(1,-1)$ a south-west step $(-1,-1)$ is also allowed, provided that the path does not intersect itself. Replacing the south-west step by a red south-east step, we end up with decorated Dyck paths. Sequence A128723 of the Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences considers such paths where peaks at level 1 are forbidden. We provide a thorough analysis of a more general scenario, namely partial decorated Dyck paths, ending on a prescribed level $j$, both from left-to-right and from right-to-left (decorated Dyck paths …
We present a new bijection between variants of $m$-Dyck paths (paths with steps in $\{+1,-m\}$ starting and ending at height $0$ and remaining at non-negative height), which generalizes a classical bijection between Dyck prefixes and pointed Łukasiewicz paths. As an application, we present a new random sampling procedure for $m$-Dyck paths with a linear time complexity and using a quasi-optimal number of random bits. This outperforms Devroye's algorithm, which uses $\mathcal O(n\log n)$ random bits.
Skew Dyck paths without up-down-left are enumerated. In a second step, the number of contiguous subwords 'up-down-left' are counted. This explains and extends results that were posted in the Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.
Skew Dyck paths are like Dyck paths, but an additional south-west step $(-1,-1)$ is allowed, provided that the path does not intersect itself. Lattice paths with catastrophes can drop from any level to the origin in just one step. We combine these two ideas. The analysis is strictly based on generating functions, and the kernel method is used.
Here we give two bijections, one to show that the number of UUU-free Dyck n-paths is the Motzkin number M_n, the other to obtain the (known) distributions of the parameters "number of UDUs" and "number of DDUs" on Dyck n-paths. The first bijection is straightforward, the second not quite so obvious.
Kim and Drake used generating functions to prove that the number of 2-distant noncrossing matchings, which are in bijection with little Schroeder paths, is the same as the weight of Dyck paths in which downsteps from even height have weight 2. This work presents bijections from those Dyck paths to little Schroeder paths, and from a similar set of Dyck paths to big Schroeder paths. We show the effect of these bijections on the corresponding matchings, find generating functions for two new classes of lattice paths, and demonstrate a relationship with 231-avoiding permutations.
In a Dyck path a peak which is (weakly) higher than all the preceding peaks is called a strict (weak) left to right maximum. We obtain explicit generating functions for both weak and strict left to right maxima in Dyck paths. The proofs of the associated asymptotics make use of analytic techniques such as Mellin transforms, singularity analysis and formal residue calculus.

A 3-dimensional Catalan word is a word on three letters so that the subword on any two letters is a Dyck path. For a given Dyck path $D$, a recently defined statistic counts the number of Catalan words with the property that any subword on two letters is exactly $D$. In this paper, we enumerate Dyck paths with this statistic equal to certain values, including all primes. The formulas obtained are in terms of Motzkin numbers and Motzkin ballot numbers.
We provide generating functions for the popularity and the distribution of patterns of length at most three over the set of Dyck paths having a first return decomposition constrained by height.
Using the bijection between partitions and vacillating tableaux, we establish a correspondence between pairs of noncrossing free Dyck paths of length $2n$ and noncrossing partitions of $[2n+1]$ with $n+1$ blocks. In terms of the number of up steps at odd positions, we find a characterization of Dyck paths constructed from pairs of noncrossing free Dyck paths by using the Labelle merging algorithm.
We prove a conjecture of S. Gao-J. Kiers-G. Orelowitz-A. Yong which asserts the reducibility of certain generalized Dyck paths. This gives a strengthening, and new proof, for their Width Bound Theorem on the Hilbert basis of the Kostka semigroup.
We calculate the total number of humps in Dyck and in Motzkin paths, and we give Standard-Young-Tableaux-interpretations of the numbers involved. One then observes the intriguing phenomena that the humps-calculations change the partitions in a strip to partitions in a hook.
We give some interpretations to certain integer sequences in terms of parameters on Grand-Dyck paths and coloured noncrossing partitions, and we find some new bijections relating Grand-Dyck paths and signed pattern avoiding permutations. Next we transfer a natural distributive lattice structure on Grand-Dyck paths to coloured noncrossing partitions and signed pattern avoiding permutations, thus showing, in particular, that it is isomorphic to the structure induced by the (strong) Bruhat order on a certain set of signed pattern avoiding permutations.
Recently Mansour and Shattuck studied $(k,a)$-paths and gave formulas that relate the total number of humps (peaks) in all $(k,a)$-paths to the number of super $(k,a)$-paths. These results generalize earlier results of Regev on Dyck paths and Motzkin paths. Their proofs are based on generating functions and they asked for bijective proofs for their results. In this paper we first give bijective proofs of Mansour and Shattuck's results, then we extend our study to $(n,m)$-Dyck paths. We give a bijection that relates the total number of peaks in all $(n,m)$-Dyck paths to certain free $(n,m)$-pat…
We prove a recent conjecture by René Marczinzik involving certain statistics on Dyck paths that originate in the representation theory of Nakayama algebras of a linearly oriented quiver. We do so by analysing the effect of the Billey-Jockusch-Stanley bijection between Dyck paths and 321-avoiding permutations on these statistics, which was suggested by the result of a query issued to the online database FindStat.
We introduce a notion of Dyck paths with coloured ascents. For several ways of colouring, we establish bijections between sets of such paths and other combinatorial structures, such as non-crossing trees, dissections of a convex polygon, etc. In some cases enumeration gives new expression for sequences enumerating these structures.
We introduce and study a new partial order on Dyck paths. We prove that these posets are meet-semilattices. We show that their numbers of intervals are the same as the number of bicubic planar maps. We describe an unexpected connection with the Hochschild polytopes of Saneblidze.
We study the relationship between rational slope Dyck paths and invariant subsets of $\mathbb Z,$ extending the work of the first two authors in the relatively prime case. We also find a bijection between $(dn,dm)$--Dyck paths and $d$-tuples of $(n,m)$-Dyck paths endowed with certain gluing data. These are the first steps towards understanding the relationship between rational slope Catalan combinatorics and the geometry of affine Springer fibers and knot invariants in the non relatively prime case.
Garsia and Xin gave a linear algorithm for inverting the sweep map for Fuss rational Dyck paths in $D_{m,n}$ where $m=kn\pm 1$. They introduced an intermediate family $\mathcal{T}_n^k$ of certain standard Young tableau. Then inverting the sweep map is done by a simple walking algorithm on a $T\in \mathcal{T}_n^k$. We find their idea naturally extends for $\mathbf{k}^\pm$-Dyck paths, and also for $\mathbf{k}$-Dyck paths (reducing to $k$-Dyck paths for the equal parameter case). The intermediate object becomes a similar type of tableau in $\mathcal{T}_\mathbf{k}$ of different column lengths. Thi…
We consider the problem of counting the set of $\mathscr{D}_{a,b}$ of Dyck paths inscribed in a rectangle of size $a\times b$. They are a natural generalization of the classical Dyck words enumerated by the Catalan numbers. By using Ferrers diagrams associated to Dyck paths, we derive formulas for the enumeration of $\mathscr{D}_{a,b}$ with $a$ and $b$ non relatively prime, in terms of Catalan numbers.
Motivated by a recent paper of Adin, Bagno and Roichman, we present an involution on Dyck paths that preserves the rise composition and interchanges the number of returns and the position of the first double fall.
We show that an identity of Kreweras for the Narayana numbers counts Dyck paths with a given number of peaks by number of peak plateaus, where a peak plateau is a run of consecutive peaks that is immediately preceded by an upstep and followed by a downstep.
We define a map $ν$ between the symmetric group $S_n$ and the set of pairs of Dyck paths of semilength $n$. We show that the map $ν$ is injective when restricted to the set of 1234-avoiding permutations and characterize the image of this map.
Paths that consist of up-steps of one unit and down-steps of $k$ units, being bounded below by a horizontal line $-t$, behave like $t+1$ ordered tuples of $k$-Dyck paths, provided that $t\le k$. We describe the general case, allowing $t$ also to be larger. Arguments are bijective and/or analytic.
We construct a bijection between 231-avoiding permutations and Dyck paths that sends the sum of the major index and the inverse major index of a 231-avoiding permutation to the major index of the corresponding Dyck path. Furthermore, we relate this bijection to others and exhibit a bistatistic on 231-avoiding permutations which is related to the q,t-Catalan numbers.
In \cite{BaDeFePi96} the concept of nondecreasing Dyck paths was introduced. We continue this research by looking at it from the point of view of words, rational languages, planted plane trees, and continued fractions. We construct a bijection with planted plane trees of height $\le 4$ and compute various statistics on trees that are the equivalents of nondecreasing Dyck paths.
In this paper we introduce a new bijection from the set of Dyck paths to itself. This bijection has the property that it maps statistics that appeared recently in the study of pattern-avoiding permutations into classical statistics on Dyck paths, whose distribution is easy to obtain. We also present a generalization of the bijection, as well as several applications of it to enumeration problems of statistics in restricted permutations.
We consider the problem of enumerating Dyck paths staying weakly above the x-axis with a limit to the number of consecutive up steps, or a limit to the number of consecutive down steps. We use Finite Operator Calculus to obtain formulas for the number of all such paths reaching a given point in the first quadrant. All our results are based on the Eulerian coefficients.
We count the number of linear intervals in the Tamari and the Dyck lattices according to their height, using generating series and Lagrange inversion. Surprisingly, these numbers are the same in both lattices. We define a new family of posets on Dyck paths, which we call alt-Tamari posets. Each alt-Tamari poset depends on the choice of an increment function delta in {0,1}^n. We recover the Tamari and the Dyck lattices as extreme cases with delta = 1 and delta = 0, respectively. We prove that all the alt-Tamari posets have the same number of linear intervals of any given height.
We propose an original approach to the problem of rankunimodality for Dyck lattices. It is based on a well known recursive construction of Dyck paths originally developed in the context of the ECO methodology, which provides a partition of Dyck lattices into saturated chains. Even if we are not able to prove that Dyck lattices are rank-unimodal, we describe a family of polynomials (which constitutes a polynomial analog of ballot numbers) and a succession rule which appear to be useful in addressing such a problem. At the end of the paper, we also propose and begin a systematic investigation of…
We introduce the Dyck path triangulation of the cartesian product of two simplices $Δ_{n-1}\timesΔ_{n-1}$. The maximal simplices of this triangulation are given by Dyck paths, and its construction naturally generalizes to produce triangulations of $Δ_{r\ n-1}\timesΔ_{n-1}$ using rational Dyck paths. Our study of the Dyck path triangulation is motivated by extendability problems of partial triangulations of products of two simplices. We show that whenever $m\geq k>n$, any triangulation of $Δ_{m-1}^{(k-1)}\timesΔ_{n-1}$ extends to a unique triangulation of $Δ_{m-1}\timesΔ_{n-1}$. Moreover, with …
We consider a class of lattice paths with certain restrictions on their ascents and down steps and use them as building blocks to construct various families of Dyck paths. We let every building block $P_j$ take on $c_j$ colors and count all of the resulting colored Dyck paths of a given semilength. Our approach is to prove a recurrence relation of convolution type, which yields a representation in terms of partial Bell polynomials that simplifies the handling of different colorings. This allows us to recover multiple known formulas for Dyck paths and related lattice paths in an unified manner.
