We show that an identity of Kreweras for the Narayana numbers counts Dyck paths with a given number of peaks by number of peak plateaus, where a peak plateau is a run of consecutive peaks that is immediately preceded by an upstep and followed by a downstep.
We find a bijection between bi-banded paths and peak-counting paths, applying to two classes of lattice paths including Dyck paths. Thus we find a new interpretation of Narayana numbers as coefficients of weight polynomials enumerating bi-banded Dyck paths, which class of paths has arisen naturally in previous literature in a solution of the stationary state of the `TASEP' stochastic process.
We give a simple proof that the the number of Dyck paths of semilength $n$ with $i$ returns to ground level and $j$ peaks is the generalized Narayana number $\frac{i}{n} \binom{n}{j} \binom{n - i - 1}{j - i}$.
It is known that both the number of Dyck paths with $2n$ steps and $k$ peaks, and the number of Dyck paths with $2n$ steps and $k$ steps at odd height follow the Narayana distribution. In this paper we present a bijection which explicitly illustrates this equinumeracy. Moreover, we extend this bijection to bilateral Dyck paths. The restriction to Dyck paths preserves the number of contacts.
The Narayana numbers are $N(n,k) = {1 \over n}{n \choose k}{n \choose {k+1}}$. There are several natural statistics on Dyck paths with a distribution given by N(n,k). We show the equidistribution of Narayana statistics by computing the flag h-vector of $J({\bf 2} \times {\bf n})$ in different ways. In the process we discover new Narayana statistics and provide co-statistics for which the Narayana statistics in question have a distribution given by Fürlinger and Hofbauers q-Narayana numbers. We also interpret the h-vector in terms of semi-standard Young tableaux, which enables us to express the…
We introduce weighted succession rules and parametric production matrices - simple extensions of the standard ECO method succession rules and production matrices. The purpose is to enumerate combinatorial objects with respect to several variables. We consider one main example, from the theory of Dyck paths. The path statistics primarily considered are peak height, rise height, and certain subwalks. Many classical sequences (such as the Catalan, Motzkin, Narayana and Schroeder numbers) are incorporated in this example.
We classify recurrent configurations of the sandpile model on the complete bipartite graph K_{m,n} in which one designated vertex is a sink. We present a bijection from these recurrent configurations to decorated parallelogram polyominoes whose bounding box is a m*n rectangle. Several special types of recurrent configurations and their properties via this bijection are examined. For example, recurrent configurations whose sum of heights is minimal are shown to correspond to polyominoes of least area. Two other classes of recurrent configurations are shown to be related to bicomposition matrice…
In this paper we study the number of humps (peaks) in Dyck, Motzkin and Schröder paths. Recently A. Regev noticed that the number of peaks in all Dyck paths of order $n$ is one half of the number of super Dyck paths of order $n$. He also computed the number of humps in Motzkin paths and found a similar relation, and asked for bijective proofs. We give a bijection and prove these results. Using this bijection we also give a new proof that the number of Dyck paths of order $n$ with $k$ peaks is the Narayana number. By double counting super Schröder paths, we also get an identity involving produc…
We show that Narayana polynomials are a specialization of row Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. Using lambda-ring calculus, we generalize to Narayana polynomials the formulas of Koshy and Jonah for Catalan numbers.
Recently Mansour and Shattuck studied $(k,a)$-paths and gave formulas that relate the total number of humps (peaks) in all $(k,a)$-paths to the number of super $(k,a)$-paths. These results generalize earlier results of Regev on Dyck paths and Motzkin paths. Their proofs are based on generating functions and they asked for bijective proofs for their results. In this paper we first give bijective proofs of Mansour and Shattuck's results, then we extend our study to $(n,m)$-Dyck paths. We give a bijection that relates the total number of peaks in all $(n,m)$-Dyck paths to certain free $(n,m)$-pat…
In the present paper we find a new interpretation of Narayana polynomials N_n(x) which are the generating polynomials for the Narayana numbers N_{n,k} counting Dyck paths of length n and with exactly k peaks. Strangely enough Narayana polynomials also occur as limits as n->oo of the sequences of eigenpolynomials of the Schur-Szego composition map sending (n-1)-tuples of polynomials of the form (x+1)^{n-1}(x+a) to their Schur-Szego product, see below. As a corollary we obtain that every N_n(x) has all roots real and non-positive. Additionally, we present an explicit formula for the density and …
Dyck paths (also balanced brackets and Dyck words) are among the most heavily studied Catalan families. This paper is a continuation of [2, 3]. In the paper we enumerate the terms of the OEIS A036991, Dyck numbers, and construct a concomitant bijection with symmetric Dyck paths. In the case of binary coding of Dyck paths we work with compact natural numbers after removing leading zeros. Analysis of binary suffixes, allowed us to obtain a bijection between arbitrary A036991 terms and symmetric A036991 terms which encode symmetric Dyck paths. The bijection generates a forest of unary non-interse…
The classical Chung-Feller theorem [2] tells us that the number of Dyck paths of length $n$ with $m$ flaws is the $n$-th Catalan number and independent on $m$. In this paper, we consider the refinements of Dyck paths with flaws by four parameters, namely peak, valley, double descent and double ascent. Let ${p}_{n,m,k}$ be the number of all the Dyck paths of semi-length $n$ with $m$ flaws and $k$ peaks. First, we derive the reciprocity theorem for the polynomial $P_{n,m}(x)=\sum\limits_{k=1}^np_{n,m,k}x^k$. Then we find the Chung-Feller properties for the sum of $p_{n,m,k}$ and $p_{n,m,n-k}$. F…
We study the statistics area, bounce and dinv on the set of parallelogram polyominoes having a rectangular m times n bounding box. We show that the bi-statistics (area, bounce) and (area, dinv) give rise to the same q,t-analogue of Narayana numbers which was introduced by two of the authors in [arXiv:1208.0024]. We prove the main conjectures of that paper: the q,t-Narayana polynomials are symmetric in both q and t, and m and n. This is accomplished by providing a symmetric functions interpretation of the q,t-Narayana polynomials which relates them to the famous diagonal harmonics.

The concepts of symmetric and asymmetric peaks in Dyck paths were introduced by Flórez and Ram\'ırez, who counted the total number of such peaks over all Dyck paths of a given length. Elizalde generalized their results by giving multivariate generating functions that keep track of the number of symmetric peaks and the number of asymmetric peaks. Elizalde also considered the analogous notion of symmetric valleys by a continued fraction method. In this paper, mainly by bijective methods, we devote to enumerating the statistics "symmetric peaks", "asymmetric peaks", "symmetric valleys" and "asymm…
The notion of symmetric and asymmetric peaks in Dyck paths was introduced by Flórez and Rodr\'ıguez, who counted the total number of such peaks over all Dyck paths of a given length. In this paper we generalize their results by giving multivariate generating functions that keep track of the number of symmetric peaks and the number of asymmetric peaks, as well as the widths of these peaks. We recover a formula of Denise and Simion as a special case of our results. We also consider the analogous but more intricate notion of symmetric valleys. We find a continued fraction expression for the gener…
Recently, Kenyon and Wilson introduced Dyck tilings, which are certain tilings of the region between two Dyck paths. The enumeration of Dyck tilings is related with hook formulas for forests and the combinatorics of Hermite polynomials. The first goal of this work is to give an alternative point of view on Dyck tilings by making use of the weak order and the Bruhat order on permutations. Then we introduce two natural generalizations: $k$-Dyck tilings and symmetric Dyck tilings. We are led to consider Stirling permutations, and define an analog of the Bruhat order on them. We show that certain …
The chromatic symmetric function (CSF) of Dyck paths of Stanley and its Shareshian-Wachs $q$-analogue have important connections to Hessenberg varieties, diagonal harmonics, and LLT polynomials. In the case of, so-called, abelian Dyck paths they are also curiously related to placements of non-attacking rooks by results of Stanley-Stembridge (1993) and Guay-Paquet (2013). For the $q$-analogue, these results have been generalized by Abreu-Nigro (2020) and Guay-Paquet (private communication), using $q$-hit numbers, which are a variant of the ones introduced by Garsia and Remmel. Among our main re…
We define a map $ν$ between the symmetric group $S_n$ and the set of pairs of Dyck paths of semilength $n$. We show that the map $ν$ is injective when restricted to the set of 1234-avoiding permutations and characterize the image of this map.
This paper's aim is to present recent combinatorial considerations on r-Dyck paths, r-Parking functions, and the r-Tamari lattices. Giving a better understanding of the combinatorics of these objects has become important in view of their (conjectural) role in the description of the graded character of the Sn-modules of bivariate and trivariate diagonal coinvariant spaces for the symmetric group.
We give a bijective proof of a conjecture of Regev and Vershik on the equality of two multisets of hook numbers of certain skew-Young diagrams. The bijection proves a result that is stronger and more symmetric than the original conjecture, by means of a construction involving Dyck paths, a particular type of lattice path.
Symmetric Dyck tilings and ballot tilings are certain tilings in the region surrounded by two ballot paths. We study the relations of combinatorial objects which are bijective to symmetric Dyck tilings such as labeled trees, Hermite histories, and perfect matchings. We also introduce two operations on labeled trees for symmetric Dyck tilings: symmetric Dyck tiling strip (symDTS) and symmetric Dyck tiling ribbon (symDTR). We give two definitions of Hermite histories for symmetric Dyck tilings, and show that they are equivalent by use of the correspondence between symDTS operation and an Hermite…
It is well known that the set of $m$-Dyck paths with a fixed height and a fixed amount of valleys is counted by the Fuß-Narayana numbers. In this article, we consider the set of $m$-Dyck paths that start with at least $t$ north steps. We give exact formulas for the number of such paths with fixed height, fixed number of returns and (i) fixed number of valleys, (ii) fixed number of valleys with $x$-coordinate divisible by $m$ and (iii) fixed number of valleys with $x$-coordinate not divisible by $m$. The enumeration (ii) combinatorially realizes the $H$-triangle appearing in a recent article of…
Skew Dyck paths are a variation of Dyck paths, where additionally to steps $(1,1)$ and $(1,-1)$ a south-west step $(-1,-1)$ is also allowed, provided that the path does not intersect itself. Replacing the south-west step by a red south-east step, we end up with decorated Dyck paths. Sequence A128723 of the Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences considers such paths where peaks at level 1 are forbidden. We provide a thorough analysis of a more general scenario, namely partial decorated Dyck paths, ending on a prescribed level $j$, both from left-to-right and from right-to-left (decorated Dyck paths …

In this paper, we study symmetric lattice paths. Let $d_{n}$, $m_{n}$, and $s_{n}$ denote the number of symmetric Dyck paths, symmetric Motzkin paths, and symmetric Schröder paths of length $2n$, respectively. By using Riordan group methods we obtain six identities relating $d_{n}$, $m_{n}$, and $s_{n}$ and also give two of them combinatorial proofs. Finally, we investigate some relations satisfied by the generic element of some special Riordan arrays and get the average mid-height and the average number of points on the x-axis of symmetric Dyck paths of length $2n.$
Each positive rational number x>0 can be written uniquely as x=a/(b-a) for coprime positive integers 0<a<b. We will identify x with the pair (a,b). In this paper we define for each positive rational x>0 a simplicial complex \Ass(x)=\Ass(a,b) called the {\sf rational associahedron}. It is a pure simplicial complex of dimension a-2, and its maximal faces are counted by the {\sf rational Catalan number} \Cat(x)=\Cat(a,b):=\frac{(a+b-1)!}{a!\,b!}. The cases (a,b)=(n,n+1) and (a,b)=(n,kn+1) recover the classical associahedron and its "Fuss-Catalan" generalization studied by Athanasiadis-Tzanaki and…
Generalized Dyck paths (or discrete excursions) are one-dimensional paths that take their steps in a given finite set S, start and end at height 0, and remain at a non-negative height. Bousquet-Mélou showed that the generating function E_k of excursions of height at most k is of the form F_k/F_{k+1}, where the F_k are polynomials satisfying a linear recurrence relation. We give a combinatorial interpretation of the polynomials F_k and of their recurrence relation using a transfer matrix method. We then extend our method to enumerate discrete meanders (or paths that start at 0 and remain at a n…
Narayana numbers appear in many places in combinatorics and probability, and it is known that they are asymptotically normal. Using Stein's method of exchangeable pairs, we provide an error of approximation in total variation to a symmetric binomial distribution of order~$n^{-1}$, which also implies a Kolmogorov bound of order~$n^{-1/2}$ for the normal approximation. Our exchangeable pair is based on a birth-death chain and has remarkable properties, which allow us to perform some otherwise tricky moment computations. Although our main interest is in Narayana numbers, we show that our main abs…
The set of Dyck paths of length $2n$ inherits a lattice structure from a bijection with the set of noncrossing partitions with the usual partial order. In this paper, we study the joint distribution of two statistics for Dyck paths: \emph{area} (the area under the path) and \emph{rank} (the rank in the lattice). While area for Dyck paths has been studied, pairing it with this rank function seems new, and we get an interesting $(q,t)$-refinement of the Catalan numbers. We present two decompositions of the corresponding generating function: one refines an identity of Carlitz and Riordan; the oth…
The aim of this work is to study the quotient ring R_n of the ring Q[x_1,...,x_n] over the ideal J_n generated by non-constant homogeneous quasi-symmetric functions. We prove here that the dimension of R_n is given by C_n, the n-th Catalan number. This is also the dimension of the space SH_n of super-covariant polynomials, that is defined as the orthogonal complement of J_n with respect to a given scalar product. We construct a basis for R_n whose elements are naturally indexed by Dyck paths. This allows us to understand the Hilbert series of SH_n in terms of number of Dyck paths with a given …
We discuss the combinatorics of decorated Dyck paths and decorated parallelogram polyominoes, extending to the decorated case the main results of both [Haglund 2004] and [Aval et al. 2014]. This settles in particular the cases $\langle\cdot,e_{n-d}h_d\rangle$ and $\langle\cdot,h_{n-d}h_d\rangle$ of the Delta conjecture of Haglund, Remmel and Wilson (2018). Along the way, we introduce some new statistics, formulate some new conjectures, prove some new identities of symmetric functions, and answer a few open problems in the literature (e.g. from [Haglund et al. 2018], [Zabrocki 2016], [Aval et a…
Simultaneous core partitions have been widely studied since Anderson's work on the enumeration of $(s,t)$-core partitions. Amdeberhan and Leven showed that the number of $(s,s+1, \ldots, s+k)$-core partitions is equal to the number of $(s, k)$-Dyck paths. In this paper, we prove that self-conjugate $(s,s+1, \ldots, s+k)$-core partitions are equinumerous with symmetric $(s, k)$-Dyck paths, confirming a conjecture posed by Cho, Huh and Sohn.
For $m,n$ coprime we introduce a new statistic skip on $(m,n)$-rational Dyck paths and give a fast way to compute dinv and skip statistics. We also introduce $(m,n)$-rank words, which are in one-to-one correspondence with $(m,n)$-Dyck paths. Defining an equivalence relation on pairs of certain ranks in a rank word, we prove that the number of equivalence classes is the skips of the rank word, and the skips of the corresponding Dyck path. We construct a homogeneous generating function $W_{m,n}(q,t,b)$ using statistics area, dinv and skip, where $W_{m,n}(q,t,1)=C_{m,n}(q,t)$, the rational Catala…
The degree of symmetry of a combinatorial object, such as a lattice path, is a measure of how symmetric the object is. It typically ranges from zero, if the object is completely asymmetric, to its size, if it is completely symmetric. We study the behavior of this statistic on Dyck paths and grand Dyck paths, with symmetry described by reflection along a vertical line through their midpoint; partitions, with symmetry given by conjugation; and certain compositions interpreted as bargraphs. We find expressions for the generating functions for these objects with respect to their degree of symmetry…
We introduce natural binary set-theoretical products on the set of all $m$-Dyck paths, which led us to define a non-symmetric algebraic operad $\Dy^m$, described on the vector space spanned by $m$-Dyck paths. Our construction is closely related to the $m$-Tamari lattice, so the products defining $\Dy^m$ are given by intervals in this lattice. For $m=1$, we recover the notion of dendriform algebra introduced by J.-L. Loday in \cite{Lod}, and there exists a natural operad morphism from the operad ${\mbox {\it Ass}}$ of associative algebras into the operad $\Dy^m$, consequently $\Dy ^m$ is a Hopf…
We study the compatibility of the action of the DAHA of type GL with two inverse systems of polynomial rings obtained from the standard Laurent polynomial representations. In both cases, the crucial analysis is that of the compatibility of the action of the Cherednik operators. Each case leads to a representation of a limit structure (the +/- stable limit DAHA) on a space of almost symmetric polynomials in infinitely many variables (the standard representation). As an application, we show that the defining representation of the double Dyck path algebra arises from the standard representation o…
The \emph{$q,t$-Catalan numbers} $C_n(q,t)$ are polynomials in $q$ and $t$ that reduce to the ordinary Catalan numbers when $q=t=1$. These polynomials have important connections to representation theory, algebraic geometry, and symmetric functions. Haglund and Haiman discovered combinatorial formulas for $C_n(q,t)$ as weighted sums of Dyck paths (or equivalently, integer partitions contained in a staircase shape). This paper undertakes a combinatorial investigation of the joint symmetry property $C_n(q,t)=C_n(t,q)$. We conjecture some structural decompositions of Dyck objects into "mutually op…
It is well-known that the length generating function E(t) of Dyck paths (excursions with steps +1 and -1) satisfies 1-E+t^2E^2=0. The generating function E^(k)(t) of Dyck paths of height at most k is E^(k)=F_k/F_{k+1}, where the F_k are polynomials in t given by F_0=F_1=1 and F_{k+1}= F_k-t^2F_{k-1}. This means that the generating function of these polynomials is \sum_{k\ge 0} F_k z^k= 1/(1-z+t^2z^2). We note that the denominator of this fraction is the minimal polynomial of the algebraic series E(t). This pattern persists for walks with more general steps. For any finite set of steps S, the g…
