T. Bridgeland defined the notion of a stability manifold for a triangulated category, motivated by Douglas's work on Π-stability for D-branes. We show that the stability manifold of the bounded derived category of the coherent sheaves on P^1 is C^2. This is the first complete picture of a stability manifold for a non-Calabi-Yau manifold.
We give a complete description of the Bridgeland stability manifold for the bounded derived category of holomorphic triples over a smooth projective curve of genus 1 as a connected, four dimensional complex manifold.
Using results in a previous paper "Non-semistable exceptional objects in hereditary categories", we focus here on studying the topology of the space of Bridgeland stability conditions on $D^b(Rep_k(Q ))$, where $Q$ is the acyclic triangular quiver (the underlying graph is the extended Dynkin diagram $\widetilde{\mathbb A}_2$). In particular, we prove that this space is contractible (in the previous paper it was shown that it is connected).
We give some remarks on our papers with Minamide and Yanagida on Bridgeland stability conditions. We also give a remark on stability conditions on Enriques surfaces, and give another proof of the projectivity of the coarse moduli spaces of semi-stable objects, which were obtained by Nuer.
In this survey we borrow from Coskun and Huizenga an example of application of Bridgeland stability conditions to birational geometry and we rephrase it without assuming any previous knowledge about derived categories.
In this paper we examine the conditions that an object $E$ with $\text{ch}_0(E)=0$ has to satisfy in order for it to be asymptotically (semi)stable with regard to Weak or Bridgeland stability conditions. This notion turned out to be equivalent to sheaf Gieseker-Simpson (semi)stability or a dual of it, depending on the curve considered.
Bridgeland stability condition is preserved under the Fourier-Mukai transform by its definition. We explain the relation with Gieseker stability. By studying the wall-crossing behavior, we reprove that the moduli spaces of stable sheaves on abelian surfaces are birationally equivalent, if the associated Mukai vectors are related by isometries of the Mukai lattice.
Following up on the construction of Bridgeland stability condition on $\mathbb{P}^3$ by Macrì, we develop techniques to study concrete wall crossing behavior for the first time on a threefold. In some cases, such as complete intersections of two hypersurfaces of the same degree or twisted cubics, we show that there are two chambers in the stability manifold where the moduli space is given by a smooth projective irreducible variety, respectively the Hilbert scheme. In the case of twisted cubics, we compute all walls and moduli spaces on a path between those two chambers. This allows us to give …
We study the Bridgeland stability of line bundles on surfaces using Bridgeland stability conditions determined by divisors. We show that given a smooth projective surface $S$, a line bundle $L$ is always Bridgeland stable for those stability conditions if there are no curves $C\subseteq S$ of negative self-intersection. When a curve $C$ of negative self-intersection is present, $L$ is destabilized by $L(-C)$ for some stability conditions. We conjecture that line bundles of the form $L(-C)$ are the only objects that can destabilize $L$, and that torsion sheaves of the form $L(C)|_C$ are the onl…
We introduce the notion of a polynomial stability condition, generalizing Bridgeland stability conditions on triangulated categories. We construct and study a family of polynomial stability conditions for any normal projective variety. This family includes both Simpson-stability, and large volume limits of Bridgeland stability conditions. We show that the PT/DT-correspondence relating stable pairs to Donaldson-Thomas invariants (conjectured by Pandharipande and Thomas) can be understood as a wall-crossing in our family of polynomial stability conditions. Similarly, we show that the relation be…
We construct a topological embedding of the maximal connected component of Bridgeland stability conditions of a (twisted) Abelian surface into the distinguished connected component of the stability manifold of the associated (twisted) Kummer surface. We use methods developed for orbifold conformal field theories.
We shall study the chamber structure of positive cone of the albanese fiber of the moduli spaces of stable objects on an abelian surfaces via the chamber structure of stability conditions.
We prove the Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality conjectured by Bayer, Macri and Toda for some products of three curves. This gives the first examples of Bridgeland stability conditions on some threefolds of general type. The key ingredients are the spreading out technique, Frobenius morphism and Bogomolov's inequality for product type varieties in positive characteristic, proved by the author recently.
For the derived category of bounded complexes of sheaves on a smooth projective surface, Bridgeland and Arcara-Bertram constructed Bridgeland stability conditions $(Z_m, \mathcal P_m)$ parametrized by $m \in (0, +\infty)$. In this paper, we show that the set of mini-walls in $(0, +\infty)$ of a fixed numerical type is locally finite. In addition, we strengthen a result of Bayer by proving that the moduli of polynomial Bridgeland semistable objects of a fixed numerical type coincides with the moduli of $(Z_m, \mathcal P_m)$-semistable objects whenever $m$ is larger than a universal constant dep…
We shall study some moduli spaces of Bridgeland's semi-stable objects on abelian surfaces and K3 surfaces with Picard number 1. Under some conditions, we show that the moduli spaces are isomorphic to the moduli spaces of Gieseker semi-stable sheaves. We also study the ample cone of the moduli spaces.
We show that the construction of Bayer, Bertram, Macri and Toda gives rise to a Bridgeland stability condition on a principally polarized abelian threefold with Picard rank one by establishing their conjectural generalized Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality for certain tilt stable objects. We do this by proving that a suitable Fourier-Mukai transform preserves the heart of a particular conjectural stability condition. We also show that the only reflexive sheaves with zero first and second Chern classes are the flat line bundles.
The key result in the theory of Bridgeland stability conditions is the property that they form a complex manifold. This comes from the fact that given any small deformation of the central charge, there is a unique way to correspondingly deform the stability condition. We give a short direct proof of a strong version of this deformation property.
We derive constraints on the existence of walls for Bridgeland stability conditions for general projective surfaces. We show that in suitable planes of stability conditions the walls are bounded and derive conditions for when the number of walls is globally finite. In examples, we show how to use the explicit conditions to locate walls and sometimes to show that there are no walls at all.
In these lecture notes we give an introduction to Bridgeland stability conditions on smooth complex projective varieties with a particular focus on the case of surfaces. This includes basic definitions of stability conditions on derived categories, basics on moduli spaces of stable objects and variation of stability. These notes originated from lecture series by the first author at the summer school "Recent advances in algebraic and arithmetic geometry", Siena, Italy, August 24-28, 2015 and at the school "Moduli of Curves", CIMAT, Guanajuato, Mexico, February 22 - March 4, 2016.
We give further counterexamples to the conjectural construction of Bridgeland stability on threefolds due to Bayer, Macrì, and Toda. This includes smooth projective threefolds containing a divisor that contracts to a point, and Weierstraß elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds. Furthermore, we show that if the original conjecture, or a minor modification of it, holds on a smooth projective threefold, then the space of stability conditions is non-empty on the blow up at an arbitrary point. More precisely, there are stability conditions on the blow up for which all skyscraper sheaves are semistable.
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety. In 2002, Bridgeland defined a notion of stability for the objects in $D^b(X)$, the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on $X$, which generalized the notion of slope stability for vector bundles on curves. There are many nice connections between stability conditions on $X$ and the geometry of the variety. We construct new stability conditions for surfaces containing a curve $C$ whose self-intersection is negative. We show that these stability conditions lie on a wall of the geometric chamber of ${\rm Stab}(X)$, the stability manifold of $…
Let $X$ be a smooth compact complex surface with the canonical divisor $K_X$ ample and let $Θ_X$ be its holomorphic tangent bundle. Bridgeland stability conditions are used to study the space $H^1 (Θ_X)$ of infinitesimal deformations of complex structures of $X$ and its relation to the geometry/topology of $X$. The main observation is that for $X$ with $H^1 (Θ_X)$ nonzero and the Chern numbers $(c_2 (X), K^2_X)$ subject to $$ τ_X :=2ch_2 (Θ_X)=K^2_X -2c_2(X) >0 $$ the object $Θ_X [1]$ of the derived category of bounded complexes of coherent sheaves on $X$ is Bridgeland unstable in a certain pa…
In this paper, we study the birational geometry of the Hilbert scheme of n points on P^2. We discuss the stable base locus decomposition of the effective cone and the corresponding birational models. We give modular interpretations to the models in terms of moduli spaces of Bridgeland semi-stable objects. We construct these moduli spaces as moduli spaces of quiver representations using G.I.T. and thus show that they are projective. There is a precise correspondence between wall-crossings in the Bridgeland stability manifold and wall-crossings between Mori cones. For n at most 9, we explicitly …
Given a zero-dimensional scheme Z, the higher-rank interpolation problem asks for the classification of slopes of vector bundles cohomologically orthogonal to the ideal sheaf of Z. In this paper, we solve this problem for all zero-dimensional monomial schemes in the projective plane. As a corollary, we obtain detailed information on the stable base loci of divisors on the Hilbert scheme of points on the plane. We prove the correspondence between walls in the Bridgeland stability manifold and walls in the Mori chamber decomposition of the effective cone conjectured by Arcara-Bertram-Coskun-Huiz…
We construct new t-structures on the derived category of coherent sheaves on smooth projective threefolds. We conjecture that they give Bridgeland stability conditions near the large volume limit. We show that this conjecture is equivalent to a Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality for the third Chern character of certain stable complexes. We also conjecture a stronger inequality, and prove it in the case of projective space, and for various examples. Finally, we prove a version of the classical Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality, not involving the third Chern character, for stable complexes.
Moduli spaces of sheaves and Hilbert schemes of points have experienced a recent resurgence in interest in the past several years, due largely to new techniques arising from Bridgeland stability conditions and derived category methods. In particular, classical questions about the birational geometry of these spaces can be answered by using new tools such as the positivity lemma of Bayer and Macrì. In this article we first survey classical results on moduli spaces of sheaves and their birational geometry. We then discuss the relationship between these classical results and the new techniques co…
We show that the conjectural construction proposed by Bayer, Bertram, Macrí and Toda gives rise to Bridgeland stability conditions for a principally polarized abelian three-fold with Picard rank one by proving that tilt stable objects satisfy the strong Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality. This is done by showing any Fourier-Mukai transform gives an equivalence of abelian categories which are double tilts of coherent sheaves.
We show that some Gieseker stable sheaves on a projective K3 surface $X$ are stable with respect to a stability condition of Bridgeland on the derived category of $X$ if the stability condition is in explicit subsets of the space of stability conditions depending on the sheaves. Furthermore we shall give two applications of the result. As a part of these applications, we show that the fine moduli space of Gieseker stable torsion free sheaves on a K3 surface with Picard number one is the moduli space of $μ$-stable locally free sheaves if the rank of the sheaves is not a square number.
We study wall crossings in Bridgeland stability for the Hilbert scheme of elliptic quartic curves in three dimensional projective space. We provide a geometric description of each of the moduli spaces we encounter, including when the second component of this Hilbert scheme appears. Along the way, we prove that the principal component of this Hilbert scheme is a double blow up with smooth centers of a Grassmannian, exhibiting a completely different proof of this known result by Avritzer and Vainsencher. This description allows us to compute the cone of effective divisors of this component.
Bridgeland stability manifolds of Calabi-Yau categories are of noticeable interest both in mathematics and in physics. By looking at some of the known example, a pattern clearly emerges and gives a fairly precise description of how they look like. In particular, they all seem to have missing loci, which tend to correspond to degenerate stability conditions vanishing on spherical objects. Describing such missing strata is also interesting from a mirror-symmetric perspective, as they conjecturally parametrize interesting types of degenerations of complex structures. All the naive attempts at con…
We apply a conjectured inequality on third chern classes of stable two-term complexes on threefolds to Fujita's conjecture. More precisely, the inequality is shown to imply a Reider-type theorem in dimension three which in turn implies that K_X + 6L is very ample when L is ample, and that 5L is very ample when K_X is trivial.
We prove that minimal instanton bundles on a Fano threefold $X$ of Picard rank one and index two are semistable objects in the Kuznetsov component $\mathsf{Ku}(X)$, with respect to the stability conditions constructed by Bayer, Lahoz, Macrì and Stellari. When the degree of $X$ is at least $3$, we show torsion free generalizations of minimal instantons are also semistable objects. As a result, we describe the moduli space of semistable objects with same numerical classes as minimal instantons in $\mathsf{Ku}(X)$. We also investigate the stability of acyclic extensions of non-minimal instantons.
We prove that, for a natural class of Bridgeland stability conditions on $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ and the blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^2$ at a point, the moduli spaces of Bridgeland semistable objects are projective. Our technique is to find suitable regions of stability conditions with hearts that are (after "rotation") equivalent to representations of a quiver. The helix and tilting theory is well-behaved on Del Pezzo surfaces and we conjecture that this program (begun in arXiv:1203.0316) runs successfully for all Del Pezzo surfaces, and the analogous Bridgeland moduli spaces are projectiv…
Inspired by mirror symmetry, we investigate some differential geometric aspects of the space of Bridgeland stability conditions on a Calabi-Yau triangulated category. The aim is to develop theory of Weil-Petersson geometry on the stringy Kähler moduli space. A few basic examples are studied. In particular, we identify our Weil-Petersson metric with the Bergman metric on a Siegel modular variety in the case of the self-product of an elliptic curve.
We survey the basic theory of non-commutative K3 surfaces, with a particular emphasis to the ones arising from cubic fourfolds. We focus on the problem of constructing Bridgeland stability conditions on these categories and we then investigate the geometry of the corresponding moduli spaces of stable objects. We discuss a number of consequences related to cubic fourfolds including new proofs of the Torelli theorem and of the integral Hodge conjecture, the extension of a result of Addington and Thomas and various applications to hyperkähler manifolds. These notes originated from the lecture ser…
We study the reduced Donaldson-Thomas theory of abelian threefolds using Bridgeland stability conditions. The main result is the invariance of the reduced Donaldson-Thomas invariants under all derived autoequivalences, up to explicitly given wall-crossing terms. We also present a numerical criterion for the absence of walls in terms of a discriminant function. For principally polarized abelian threefolds of Picard rank one, the wall-crossing contributions are discussed in detail. The discussion yield evidence for a conjectural formula for curve counting invariants by Bryan, Pandharipande, Yin,…
In this article, we treat stability conditions in the sense of King, Bridgeland and Bayer in a single framework. Following King, we begin with weight functions on a triangulated category, and consider increasingly specialised configurations of triangulated categories, t-structures and stability functions that give equivalent categories of stable objects. Along the way, we recover existing results in representation theory and algebraic geometry, and prove a series of new results on elliptic surfaces, including correspondence theorems for Bridgeland stability conditions and polynomial stability …
In this paper, we shall study the structure of walls for Bridgeland's stability conditions on abelian surfaces. In particular, we shall study the structure of walls for the moduli spaces of rank 1 complexes on an abelian surface with the Picard number 1.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective threefold of Picard number one for which the generalized Bogomlov-Gieseker inequality holds. We characterize the limit Bridgeland semistable objects at large volume in the vertical region of the geometric stability conditions associated to $X$ in complete generality and provide examples of asymptotically semistable objects. In the case of the projective space and $ch^β(E)=(-R,0,D,0)$, we prove that there are only a finite number of nested walls in the $(α,s)$-plane. Moreover, when $R=0$ the only semistable objects in the outermost chamber are the 1-dimensional Gi…
In this short note, we describe a problem in algebraic geometry where the solution involves Catalan numbers. More specifically, we consider the derived category of coherent sheaves on an elliptic surface, and the action of its autoequivalence group on its Bridgeland stability manifold. In solving an equation involving this group action, the generating function of Catalan numbers arises, allowing us to use asymptotic estimates of Catalan numbers to arrive at a bound for the solution set.
We construct a family of nef divisor classes on every moduli space of stable complexes in the sense of Bridgeland. This divisor class varies naturally with the Bridgeland stability condition. For a generic stability condition on a K3 surface, we prove that this class is ample, thereby generalizing a result of Minamide, Yanagida, and Yoshioka. Our result also gives a systematic explanation of the relation between wall-crossing for Bridgeland-stability and the minimal model program for the moduli space. We give three applications of our method for classical moduli spaces of sheaves on a K3 surfa…
On a smooth projective threefold, we show that there are only two isomorphism types for the moduli of stable objects with respect to Bayer's standard polynomial Bridgeland stability - the moduli of Gieseker-stable sheaves and the moduli of PT-stable objects - under the following assumptions: no two of the stability vectors are collinear, and the degree and rank of the objects are relatively prime. We also describe a close relation between the intersection of the moduli spaces of PT-stable and dual-PT-stable objects, and the moduli of reflexive sheaves.
