We derive constraints on the existence of walls for Bridgeland stability conditions for general projective surfaces. We show that in suitable planes of stability conditions the walls are bounded and derive conditions for when the number of walls is globally finite. In examples, we show how to use the explicit conditions to locate walls and sometimes to show that there are no walls at all.
We prove that the "Thaddeus flips" of $L$-twisted sheaves constructed by Matsuki and Wentworth can be obtained via Bridgeland wall-crossing. Similarly, we realize the change of polarization for moduli spaces of 1-dimensional Gieseker semistable sheaves on a surface by varying a family of stability conditions.
Bridgeland stability condition is preserved under the Fourier-Mukai transform by its definition. We explain the relation with Gieseker stability. By studying the wall-crossing behavior, we reprove that the moduli spaces of stable sheaves on abelian surfaces are birationally equivalent, if the associated Mukai vectors are related by isometries of the Mukai lattice.
We investigate the wall-crossing behavior as Bridgeland moduli spaces for some Simpson moduli spaces of Gieseker-semistable torsion sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ with linear Hilbert polynomial. In particular, we recover some of the birational transformations of these spaces described by Maican and Chung-Moon as wall-crossing maps in certain slices of $Stab(\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1)$.
For the derived category of bounded complexes of sheaves on a smooth projective surface, Bridgeland and Arcara-Bertram constructed Bridgeland stability conditions $(Z_m, \mathcal P_m)$ parametrized by $m \in (0, +\infty)$. In this paper, we show that the set of mini-walls in $(0, +\infty)$ of a fixed numerical type is locally finite. In addition, we strengthen a result of Bayer by proving that the moduli of polynomial Bridgeland semistable objects of a fixed numerical type coincides with the moduli of $(Z_m, \mathcal P_m)$-semistable objects whenever $m$ is larger than a universal constant dep…
Following up on the construction of Bridgeland stability condition on $\mathbb{P}^3$ by Macrì, we develop techniques to study concrete wall crossing behavior for the first time on a threefold. In some cases, such as complete intersections of two hypersurfaces of the same degree or twisted cubics, we show that there are two chambers in the stability manifold where the moduli space is given by a smooth projective irreducible variety, respectively the Hilbert scheme. In the case of twisted cubics, we compute all walls and moduli spaces on a path between those two chambers. This allows us to give …
Let $v_d(\mathbb{P}^2)\subset |\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^2}(d)|$ denote the $d$-uple Veronese surface. After studying some general aspects of the wall-crossing phenomena for stability conditions on surfaces, we are able to describe a sequence of flips of the secant varieties of $v_d(\mathbb{P}^2)$ by embedding the blow-up $\mbox{bl}_{v_d(\mathbb{P}^2)}|\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^2}(d)|$ into a suitable moduli space of Bridgeland semistable objects on $\mathbb{P}^2$.
We give another proof of Le Potier's result and some variants on moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on the projective plane, using the Bridgeland stability conditions. As an application we study the wall-crossing phenomena of the Hilbert schemes of points on the projective plane.
In this paper, we shall study the structure of walls for Bridgeland's stability conditions on abelian surfaces. In particular, we shall study the structure of walls for the moduli spaces of rank 1 complexes on an abelian surface with the Picard number 1.
We prove that, for a natural class of Bridgeland stability conditions on $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ and the blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^2$ at a point, the moduli spaces of Bridgeland semistable objects are projective. Our technique is to find suitable regions of stability conditions with hearts that are (after "rotation") equivalent to representations of a quiver. The helix and tilting theory is well-behaved on Del Pezzo surfaces and we conjecture that this program (begun in arXiv:1203.0316) runs successfully for all Del Pezzo surfaces, and the analogous Bridgeland moduli spaces are projectiv…
In this paper, we study the birational geometry of the Hilbert scheme of n points on P^2. We discuss the stable base locus decomposition of the effective cone and the corresponding birational models. We give modular interpretations to the models in terms of moduli spaces of Bridgeland semi-stable objects. We construct these moduli spaces as moduli spaces of quiver representations using G.I.T. and thus show that they are projective. There is a precise correspondence between wall-crossings in the Bridgeland stability manifold and wall-crossings between Mori cones. For n at most 9, we explicitly …
Let $(X,H)$ be a smooth, projective, polarized surface over $\mathbb{C}$, and let $v \in K_{\mathrm{num}}(X)$ be a class of positive rank. We prove that for certain Bridgeland stability conditions $σ= (\mathcal{A}, Z)$ "on the vertical wall" for $v$, the good moduli space $M^σ(v)$ parameterizing S-equivalence classes of $σ$-semistable objects of class $v$ in $\mathcal{A}$ is projective. Moreover, we construct a bijective morphism $M^{\mathrm{Uhl}}(v) \to M^σ(v)$ from the Uhlenbeck compactification of $μ$-stable vector bundles.
We give a complete description of the Bridgeland stability manifold for the bounded derived category of holomorphic triples over a smooth projective curve of genus 1 as a connected, four dimensional complex manifold.
We give further counterexamples to the conjectural construction of Bridgeland stability on threefolds due to Bayer, Macrì, and Toda. This includes smooth projective threefolds containing a divisor that contracts to a point, and Weierstraß elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds. Furthermore, we show that if the original conjecture, or a minor modification of it, holds on a smooth projective threefold, then the space of stability conditions is non-empty on the blow up at an arbitrary point. More precisely, there are stability conditions on the blow up for which all skyscraper sheaves are semistable.
We construct new t-structures on the derived category of coherent sheaves on smooth projective threefolds. We conjecture that they give Bridgeland stability conditions near the large volume limit. We show that this conjecture is equivalent to a Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality for the third Chern character of certain stable complexes. We also conjecture a stronger inequality, and prove it in the case of projective space, and for various examples. Finally, we prove a version of the classical Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality, not involving the third Chern character, for stable complexes.
We introduce the notion of a polynomial stability condition, generalizing Bridgeland stability conditions on triangulated categories. We construct and study a family of polynomial stability conditions for any normal projective variety. This family includes both Simpson-stability, and large volume limits of Bridgeland stability conditions. We show that the PT/DT-correspondence relating stable pairs to Donaldson-Thomas invariants (conjectured by Pandharipande and Thomas) can be understood as a wall-crossing in our family of polynomial stability conditions. Similarly, we show that the relation be…
We compute moduli spaces of Bridgeland stable objects on an irreducible principally polarized complex abelian surface corresponding to twisted ideal sheaves. We use Fourier-Mukai techniques to extend the ideas of Arcara and Bertram to express wall-crossings as Mukai flops and show that the moduli spaces are projective.
We give a new proof of the following theorem: moduli spaces of stable complexes on a complex projective K3 surface, with primitive Mukai vector and with respect to a generic Bridgeland stability condition, are hyperkähler varieties of $\mathrm{K3}^{[n]}$-type of expected dimension. We use derived equivalences, deformations and wall-crossing for Bridgeland stability to reduce to the case of the Hilbert scheme of points.
Given a zero-dimensional scheme Z, the higher-rank interpolation problem asks for the classification of slopes of vector bundles cohomologically orthogonal to the ideal sheaf of Z. In this paper, we solve this problem for all zero-dimensional monomial schemes in the projective plane. As a corollary, we obtain detailed information on the stable base loci of divisors on the Hilbert scheme of points on the plane. We prove the correspondence between walls in the Bridgeland stability manifold and walls in the Mori chamber decomposition of the effective cone conjectured by Arcara-Bertram-Coskun-Huiz…
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety. In 2002, Bridgeland defined a notion of stability for the objects in $D^b(X)$, the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on $X$, which generalized the notion of slope stability for vector bundles on curves. There are many nice connections between stability conditions on $X$ and the geometry of the variety. We construct new stability conditions for surfaces containing a curve $C$ whose self-intersection is negative. We show that these stability conditions lie on a wall of the geometric chamber of ${\rm Stab}(X)$, the stability manifold of $…
We construct Bridgeland stability conditions on the derived category of smooth quasi-projective Deligne-Mumford surfaces whose coarse moduli spaces have ADE singularities. This unifies the construction for smooth surfaces and Bridgeland's work on Kleinian singularities. The construction hinges on an orbifold version of the Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality for slope semistable sheaves on the stack, and makes use of the Toën-Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorem.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective threefold of Picard number one for which the generalized Bogomlov-Gieseker inequality holds. We characterize the limit Bridgeland semistable objects at large volume in the vertical region of the geometric stability conditions associated to $X$ in complete generality and provide examples of asymptotically semistable objects. In the case of the projective space and $ch^β(E)=(-R,0,D,0)$, we prove that there are only a finite number of nested walls in the $(α,s)$-plane. Moreover, when $R=0$ the only semistable objects in the outermost chamber are the 1-dimensional Gi…
We give a natural family of Bridgeland stability conditions on the derived category of a smooth projective complex surface S and describe ``wall-crossing behavior'' for objects with the same invariants as $\cO_C(H)$ when H generates Pic(S) and $C \in |H|$. If, in addition, S is a K3 or Abelian surface, we use this description to construct a sequence of fine moduli spaces of Bridgeland-stable objects via Mukai flops and generalized elementary modifications of the universal coherent sheaf. We also discover a natural generalization of Thaddeus' stable pairs for curves embedded in the moduli space…
We study the Bridgeland stability of line bundles on surfaces using Bridgeland stability conditions determined by divisors. We show that given a smooth projective surface $S$, a line bundle $L$ is always Bridgeland stable for those stability conditions if there are no curves $C\subseteq S$ of negative self-intersection. When a curve $C$ of negative self-intersection is present, $L$ is destabilized by $L(-C)$ for some stability conditions. We conjecture that line bundles of the form $L(-C)$ are the only objects that can destabilize $L$, and that torsion sheaves of the form $L(C)|_C$ are the onl…
In this paper, we prove BG-type inequality conjecture for threefolds in the title. In particular, there exist Bridgeland stability conditions on these threefolds.
In these lecture notes we give an introduction to Bridgeland stability conditions on smooth complex projective varieties with a particular focus on the case of surfaces. This includes basic definitions of stability conditions on derived categories, basics on moduli spaces of stable objects and variation of stability. These notes originated from lecture series by the first author at the summer school "Recent advances in algebraic and arithmetic geometry", Siena, Italy, August 24-28, 2015 and at the school "Moduli of Curves", CIMAT, Guanajuato, Mexico, February 22 - March 4, 2016.
We study the reduced Donaldson-Thomas theory of abelian threefolds using Bridgeland stability conditions. The main result is the invariance of the reduced Donaldson-Thomas invariants under all derived autoequivalences, up to explicitly given wall-crossing terms. We also present a numerical criterion for the absence of walls in terms of a discriminant function. For principally polarized abelian threefolds of Picard rank one, the wall-crossing contributions are discussed in detail. The discussion yield evidence for a conjectural formula for curve counting invariants by Bryan, Pandharipande, Yin,…
We study wall crossings in Bridgeland stability for the Hilbert scheme of elliptic quartic curves in three dimensional projective space. We provide a geometric description of each of the moduli spaces we encounter, including when the second component of this Hilbert scheme appears. Along the way, we prove that the principal component of this Hilbert scheme is a double blow up with smooth centers of a Grassmannian, exhibiting a completely different proof of this known result by Avritzer and Vainsencher. This description allows us to compute the cone of effective divisors of this component.
On a smooth projective threefold, we show that there are only two isomorphism types for the moduli of stable objects with respect to Bayer's standard polynomial Bridgeland stability - the moduli of Gieseker-stable sheaves and the moduli of PT-stable objects - under the following assumptions: no two of the stability vectors are collinear, and the degree and rank of the objects are relatively prime. We also describe a close relation between the intersection of the moduli spaces of PT-stable and dual-PT-stable objects, and the moduli of reflexive sheaves.
We show that the minimal model program on any smooth projective surface is realized as a variation of the moduli spaces of Bridgeland stable objects in the derived category of coherent sheaves.
We use wall-crossing with respect to Bridgeland stability conditions to systematically study the birational geometry of a moduli space M of stable sheaves on a K3 surface X: 1. We describe the nef cone, the movable cone, and the effective cone of M in terms of the Mukai lattice of X. 2. We establish a long-standing conjecture that predicts the existence of a birational Lagrangian fibration on M whenever M admits an integral divisor class D of square zero (with respect to the Beauville-Bogomolov form). These results are proved using a natural map from the space of Bridgeland stability condition…
We show that some Gieseker stable sheaves on a projective K3 surface $X$ are stable with respect to a stability condition of Bridgeland on the derived category of $X$ if the stability condition is in explicit subsets of the space of stability conditions depending on the sheaves. Furthermore we shall give two applications of the result. As a part of these applications, we show that the fine moduli space of Gieseker stable torsion free sheaves on a K3 surface with Picard number one is the moduli space of $μ$-stable locally free sheaves if the rank of the sheaves is not a square number.
We study the Hilbert scheme of twisted cubics in the three-dimensional projective space by using Bridgeland stability conditions. We use wall-crossing techniques to describe its geometric structure and singularities, which reproves the classical result of Piene and Schlessinger.
We survey recent developments on Donaldson-Thomas theory, Bridgeland stability conditions and wall-crossing formula. We emphasize the importance of the counting theory of Bridgeland semistable objects in the derived category of coherent sheaves to find a hidden property of the generating series of Donaldson-Thomas invariants.
Given an action of a finite group $G$ on the derived category of a smooth projective variety $X$ we relate the fixed loci of the induced $G$-action on moduli spaces of stable objects in $D^b(\mathrm{Coh}(X))$ with moduli spaces of stable objects in the equivariant category $D^b(\mathrm{Coh}(X))_G$. As an application we obtain a criterion for the equivariant category of a symplectic action on the derived category of a symplectic surface to be equivalent to the derived category of a surface. This generalizes the derived McKay correspondence, and yields a general framework for describing fixed lo…
We construct a family of nef divisor classes on every moduli space of stable complexes in the sense of Bridgeland. This divisor class varies naturally with the Bridgeland stability condition. For a generic stability condition on a K3 surface, we prove that this class is ample, thereby generalizing a result of Minamide, Yanagida, and Yoshioka. Our result also gives a systematic explanation of the relation between wall-crossing for Bridgeland-stability and the minimal model program for the moduli space. We give three applications of our method for classical moduli spaces of sheaves on a K3 surfa…
The space of Bridgeland stability conditions on the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on P2 has a principle connected component Stab^†(P2). We show that Stab^†(P2) is the union of geometric and algebraic stability conditions. As a consequence, we give a cell decomposition for Stab^†(P2) and show that Stab^†(P2) is contractible.
The purpose of this paper is to incorporate minimal free resolutions into the study of the birational geometry of the moduli space of coherent sheaves on the plane with character $ξ$, denoted by $M(ξ)$. We show that it is possible to recover the relevant Bridgeland destabilizing object from the minimal free resolution in order to compute the effective cone $\mathrm{Eff}(M(ξ))$ and conjecture a full relationship between Bridgeland destabilizing objects and minimal free resolutions. Moreover, we also prove that minimal free resolutions, paired with interpolation for vector bundles, yield the mov…
We give a conjectural construction of Bridgeland stability conditions on the derived category of fibred threefolds. The construction depends on a conjectural Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality for certain stable complexes. It can be considered as a relative version of the construction of Bayer, Macrì and Toda. We prove the conjectural Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality in the case of relative projective planes over curves. This gives the the existence of Bridgeland stability conditions on such threefolds.
We construct moduli spaces of semistable objects on an Enriques surface for generic Bridgeland stability condition and prove their projectivity. We further generalize classical results about moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on an Enriques surface to their Bridgeland counterparts. Using Bayer and Macrì's construction of a natural nef divisor varying with the stability condition, we begin a systematic exploration of the relation between wall-crossing on the Bridgeland stability manifold and the minimal model program for these moduli spaces. We give three applications of our machinery to obtai…
Using Bridgeland stability conditions we give sufficient criteria for a stable vector bundle on a surface to remain stable when restricted to a curve. We give a stronger criterion when the vector bundle is a general vector bundle on the plane. As an application, we compute the cohomology of such bundles for curves that lie in the plane or on Hirzebruch surfaces.
We study the birational geometry of deformations of Hilbert schemes of points on the projective plane P2. We complete the picture in the paper of Daniele Arcara, Aaron Bertram, Izzet Coskun and Jack Huizenga by giving an explicit correspondence between the stable base locus walls on the Neron-Severi space and the actual walls on the Bridgeland stability space. We show that the birational geometry of a deformed Hilb P2 is different from that of Hilb P2.
The notion of limit stability on Calabi-Yau 3-folds is introduced by the author to construct an approximation of Bridgeland-Douglas stability conditions at the large volume limit. It has also turned out that the wall-crossing phenomena of limit stable objects seem relevant to the rationality conjecture of the generating functions of Pandharipande-Thomas invariants. In this article, we shall make it clear how wall-crossing formula of the counting invariants of limit stable objects solves the above conjecture.
We consider moduli stacks of Bridgeland semistable objects that previously had only set-theoretic identifications with Uhlenbeck compactification spaces. On a K3 surface $X$, we give examples where such a moduli stack is isomorphic to a moduli stack of slope semistable locally free sheaves on the Fourier-Mukai partner $\hat{X}$. This yields a morphism from the stack of Bridgeland semistable objects to a projective scheme, which induces an injection on closed points. It also allows us to extend a theorem of Bruzzo-Maciocia on Hilbert schemes to a statement on moduli of complexes.
We study the birational geometry of moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on the projective plane via Bridgeland stability conditions. We show that the entire MMP of their moduli spaces can be run via wall-crossing. Via a description of the walls, we give a numerical description of their movable cones, along with its chamber decomposition corresponding to minimal models. As an application, we show that for primitive vectors, all birational models corresponding to open chambers in the movable cone are smooth and irreducible.
Let $C$ be a curve on a K3 surface $X$ with Picard group $\mathbb{Z}.[C]$. Mukai's program seeks to recover $X$ from $C$ by exhibiting it as a Fourier-Mukai partner to a Brill-Noether locus of vector bundles on $C$. We use wall-crossing in the space of Bridgeland stability conditions to prove this for genus $\ge14$. This paper deals with the case $g-1$ prime left over from Paper I.
On a Weierstraß elliptic surface $X$, we define a `limit' of Bridgeland stability conditions, denoted as $Z^l$-stability, by moving the polarisation towards the fiber direction in the ample cone while keeping the volume of the polarisation fixed. We describe conditions under which a slope stable torsion-free sheaf is taken by a Fourier-Mukai transform to a $Z^l$-stable object, and describe a modification upon which a $Z^l$-semistable object is taken by the inverse Fourier-Mukai transform to a slope semistable torsion-free sheaf. We also study wall-crossing for Bridgeland stability, and show th…
