We prove that the Gieseker moduli space of stable sheaves on a smooth projective threefold $X$ of Picard rank 1 is separated from the moduli space of PT stable objects by a single wall in the space of Bridgeland stability conditions on $X$, thus realizing the higher rank DT/PT correspondence as a wall-crossing phenomenon in the space of Bridgeland stability conditions. In addition, we also show that only finitely many walls pass through the upper $(β,α)$-plane parametrizing geometric Bridgeland stability conditions on $X$ which destabilize Gieseker stable sheaves, PT stable objects or their duals when $α>α_0$.
We prove that the "Thaddeus flips" of $L$-twisted sheaves constructed by Matsuki and Wentworth can be obtained via Bridgeland wall-crossing. Similarly, we realize the change of polarization for moduli spaces of 1-dimensional Gieseker semistable sheaves on a surface by varying a family of stability conditions.
Bridgeland stability condition is preserved under the Fourier-Mukai transform by its definition. We explain the relation with Gieseker stability. By studying the wall-crossing behavior, we reprove that the moduli spaces of stable sheaves on abelian surfaces are birationally equivalent, if the associated Mukai vectors are related by isometries of the Mukai lattice.
We investigate the wall-crossing behavior as Bridgeland moduli spaces for some Simpson moduli spaces of Gieseker-semistable torsion sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ with linear Hilbert polynomial. In particular, we recover some of the birational transformations of these spaces described by Maican and Chung-Moon as wall-crossing maps in certain slices of $Stab(\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1)$.
Following up on the construction of Bridgeland stability condition on $\mathbb{P}^3$ by Macrì, we develop techniques to study concrete wall crossing behavior for the first time on a threefold. In some cases, such as complete intersections of two hypersurfaces of the same degree or twisted cubics, we show that there are two chambers in the stability manifold where the moduli space is given by a smooth projective irreducible variety, respectively the Hilbert scheme. In the case of twisted cubics, we compute all walls and moduli spaces on a path between those two chambers. This allows us to give …
Let $v_d(\mathbb{P}^2)\subset |\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^2}(d)|$ denote the $d$-uple Veronese surface. After studying some general aspects of the wall-crossing phenomena for stability conditions on surfaces, we are able to describe a sequence of flips of the secant varieties of $v_d(\mathbb{P}^2)$ by embedding the blow-up $\mbox{bl}_{v_d(\mathbb{P}^2)}|\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^2}(d)|$ into a suitable moduli space of Bridgeland semistable objects on $\mathbb{P}^2$.
We derive constraints on the existence of walls for Bridgeland stability conditions for general projective surfaces. We show that in suitable planes of stability conditions the walls are bounded and derive conditions for when the number of walls is globally finite. In examples, we show how to use the explicit conditions to locate walls and sometimes to show that there are no walls at all.
For the derived category of bounded complexes of sheaves on a smooth projective surface, Bridgeland and Arcara-Bertram constructed Bridgeland stability conditions $(Z_m, \mathcal P_m)$ parametrized by $m \in (0, +\infty)$. In this paper, we show that the set of mini-walls in $(0, +\infty)$ of a fixed numerical type is locally finite. In addition, we strengthen a result of Bayer by proving that the moduli of polynomial Bridgeland semistable objects of a fixed numerical type coincides with the moduli of $(Z_m, \mathcal P_m)$-semistable objects whenever $m$ is larger than a universal constant dep…
In this paper, we shall study the structure of walls for Bridgeland's stability conditions on abelian surfaces. In particular, we shall study the structure of walls for the moduli spaces of rank 1 complexes on an abelian surface with the Picard number 1.
We introduce the notion of a polynomial stability condition, generalizing Bridgeland stability conditions on triangulated categories. We construct and study a family of polynomial stability conditions for any normal projective variety. This family includes both Simpson-stability, and large volume limits of Bridgeland stability conditions. We show that the PT/DT-correspondence relating stable pairs to Donaldson-Thomas invariants (conjectured by Pandharipande and Thomas) can be understood as a wall-crossing in our family of polynomial stability conditions. Similarly, we show that the relation be…
In this paper, we study the birational geometry of the Hilbert scheme of n points on P^2. We discuss the stable base locus decomposition of the effective cone and the corresponding birational models. We give modular interpretations to the models in terms of moduli spaces of Bridgeland semi-stable objects. We construct these moduli spaces as moduli spaces of quiver representations using G.I.T. and thus show that they are projective. There is a precise correspondence between wall-crossings in the Bridgeland stability manifold and wall-crossings between Mori cones. For n at most 9, we explicitly …
We give a new proof of the following theorem: moduli spaces of stable complexes on a complex projective K3 surface, with primitive Mukai vector and with respect to a generic Bridgeland stability condition, are hyperkähler varieties of $\mathrm{K3}^{[n]}$-type of expected dimension. We use derived equivalences, deformations and wall-crossing for Bridgeland stability to reduce to the case of the Hilbert scheme of points.
We give another proof of Le Potier's result and some variants on moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on the projective plane, using the Bridgeland stability conditions. As an application we study the wall-crossing phenomena of the Hilbert schemes of points on the projective plane.
We compute moduli spaces of Bridgeland stable objects on an irreducible principally polarized complex abelian surface corresponding to twisted ideal sheaves. We use Fourier-Mukai techniques to extend the ideas of Arcara and Bertram to express wall-crossings as Mukai flops and show that the moduli spaces are projective.
Given a zero-dimensional scheme Z, the higher-rank interpolation problem asks for the classification of slopes of vector bundles cohomologically orthogonal to the ideal sheaf of Z. In this paper, we solve this problem for all zero-dimensional monomial schemes in the projective plane. As a corollary, we obtain detailed information on the stable base loci of divisors on the Hilbert scheme of points on the plane. We prove the correspondence between walls in the Bridgeland stability manifold and walls in the Mori chamber decomposition of the effective cone conjectured by Arcara-Bertram-Coskun-Huiz…
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety. In 2002, Bridgeland defined a notion of stability for the objects in $D^b(X)$, the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on $X$, which generalized the notion of slope stability for vector bundles on curves. There are many nice connections between stability conditions on $X$ and the geometry of the variety. We construct new stability conditions for surfaces containing a curve $C$ whose self-intersection is negative. We show that these stability conditions lie on a wall of the geometric chamber of ${\rm Stab}(X)$, the stability manifold of $…
We give a natural family of Bridgeland stability conditions on the derived category of a smooth projective complex surface S and describe ``wall-crossing behavior'' for objects with the same invariants as $\cO_C(H)$ when H generates Pic(S) and $C \in |H|$. If, in addition, S is a K3 or Abelian surface, we use this description to construct a sequence of fine moduli spaces of Bridgeland-stable objects via Mukai flops and generalized elementary modifications of the universal coherent sheaf. We also discover a natural generalization of Thaddeus' stable pairs for curves embedded in the moduli space…
We use wall-crossing with respect to Bridgeland stability conditions to systematically study the birational geometry of a moduli space M of stable sheaves on a K3 surface X: 1. We describe the nef cone, the movable cone, and the effective cone of M in terms of the Mukai lattice of X. 2. We establish a long-standing conjecture that predicts the existence of a birational Lagrangian fibration on M whenever M admits an integral divisor class D of square zero (with respect to the Beauville-Bogomolov form). These results are proved using a natural map from the space of Bridgeland stability condition…
We study the Hilbert scheme of twisted cubics in the three-dimensional projective space by using Bridgeland stability conditions. We use wall-crossing techniques to describe its geometric structure and singularities, which reproves the classical result of Piene and Schlessinger.
Let $(X,H)$ be a smooth, projective, polarized surface over $\mathbb{C}$, and let $v \in K_{\mathrm{num}}(X)$ be a class of positive rank. We prove that for certain Bridgeland stability conditions $σ= (\mathcal{A}, Z)$ "on the vertical wall" for $v$, the good moduli space $M^σ(v)$ parameterizing S-equivalence classes of $σ$-semistable objects of class $v$ in $\mathcal{A}$ is projective. Moreover, we construct a bijective morphism $M^{\mathrm{Uhl}}(v) \to M^σ(v)$ from the Uhlenbeck compactification of $μ$-stable vector bundles.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective threefold of Picard number one for which the generalized Bogomlov-Gieseker inequality holds. We characterize the limit Bridgeland semistable objects at large volume in the vertical region of the geometric stability conditions associated to $X$ in complete generality and provide examples of asymptotically semistable objects. In the case of the projective space and $ch^β(E)=(-R,0,D,0)$, we prove that there are only a finite number of nested walls in the $(α,s)$-plane. Moreover, when $R=0$ the only semistable objects in the outermost chamber are the 1-dimensional Gi…
We study wall crossings in Bridgeland stability for the Hilbert scheme of elliptic quartic curves in three dimensional projective space. We provide a geometric description of each of the moduli spaces we encounter, including when the second component of this Hilbert scheme appears. Along the way, we prove that the principal component of this Hilbert scheme is a double blow up with smooth centers of a Grassmannian, exhibiting a completely different proof of this known result by Avritzer and Vainsencher. This description allows us to compute the cone of effective divisors of this component.
We study the reduced Donaldson-Thomas theory of abelian threefolds using Bridgeland stability conditions. The main result is the invariance of the reduced Donaldson-Thomas invariants under all derived autoequivalences, up to explicitly given wall-crossing terms. We also present a numerical criterion for the absence of walls in terms of a discriminant function. For principally polarized abelian threefolds of Picard rank one, the wall-crossing contributions are discussed in detail. The discussion yield evidence for a conjectural formula for curve counting invariants by Bryan, Pandharipande, Yin,…
We survey recent developments on Donaldson-Thomas theory, Bridgeland stability conditions and wall-crossing formula. We emphasize the importance of the counting theory of Bridgeland semistable objects in the derived category of coherent sheaves to find a hidden property of the generating series of Donaldson-Thomas invariants.
We construct a family of nef divisor classes on every moduli space of stable complexes in the sense of Bridgeland. This divisor class varies naturally with the Bridgeland stability condition. For a generic stability condition on a K3 surface, we prove that this class is ample, thereby generalizing a result of Minamide, Yanagida, and Yoshioka. Our result also gives a systematic explanation of the relation between wall-crossing for Bridgeland-stability and the minimal model program for the moduli space. We give three applications of our method for classical moduli spaces of sheaves on a K3 surfa…
The notion of limit stability on Calabi-Yau 3-folds is introduced by the author to construct an approximation of Bridgeland-Douglas stability conditions at the large volume limit. It has also turned out that the wall-crossing phenomena of limit stable objects seem relevant to the rationality conjecture of the generating functions of Pandharipande-Thomas invariants. In this article, we shall make it clear how wall-crossing formula of the counting invariants of limit stable objects solves the above conjecture.
We construct moduli spaces of semistable objects on an Enriques surface for generic Bridgeland stability condition and prove their projectivity. We further generalize classical results about moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on an Enriques surface to their Bridgeland counterparts. Using Bayer and Macrì's construction of a natural nef divisor varying with the stability condition, we begin a systematic exploration of the relation between wall-crossing on the Bridgeland stability manifold and the minimal model program for these moduli spaces. We give three applications of our machinery to obtai…
Let $C$ be a curve on a K3 surface $X$ with Picard group $\mathbb{Z}.[C]$. Mukai's program seeks to recover $X$ from $C$ by exhibiting it as a Fourier-Mukai partner to a Brill-Noether locus of vector bundles on $C$. We use wall-crossing in the space of Bridgeland stability conditions to prove this for genus $\ge14$. This paper deals with the case $g-1$ prime left over from Paper I.
On a Weierstraß elliptic surface $X$, we define a `limit' of Bridgeland stability conditions, denoted as $Z^l$-stability, by moving the polarisation towards the fiber direction in the ample cone while keeping the volume of the polarisation fixed. We describe conditions under which a slope stable torsion-free sheaf is taken by a Fourier-Mukai transform to a $Z^l$-stable object, and describe a modification upon which a $Z^l$-semistable object is taken by the inverse Fourier-Mukai transform to a slope semistable torsion-free sheaf. We also study wall-crossing for Bridgeland stability, and show th…
Over the last few years, wall-crossing for Bridgeland stability conditions has led to a large number of results in algebraic geometry, particular on birational geometry of moduli spaces. We illustrate some of the methods behind these result by reproving Lazarsfeld's Brill-Noether theorem for curves on K3 surfaces via wall-crossing. We conclude with a survey of recent applications of stability conditions on surfaces. The intended reader is an algebraic geometer with a limited working knowledge of derived categories. This article is based on the author's talk at the AMS Summer Institute on Algeb…
We prove an effective restriction theorem for stable vector bundles $E$ on a smooth projective variety: $E|_D$ is (semi)stable for all irreducible divisors $D \in |kH|$ for all $k$ greater than an explicit constant. As an application, we show that Mercat's conjecture in any rank greater than $2$ fails for curves lying on K3 surfaces. Our technique is to use wall-crossing with respect to (weak) Bridgeland stability conditions which we also use to reprove Camere's result on slope stability of the tangent bundle of $\mathbb{P}^n$ restricted to a K3 surface.
Let $C$ be a curve of genus $g \geq 11$ such that $g-1$ is a composite number. Suppose $C$ is on a K3 surface whose Picard group is generated by the curve class $[C]$. We use wall-crossing with respect to Bridgeland stability conditions to generalise Mukai's program to this situation: we show how to reconstruct the K3 surface containing the curve $C$ as a Fourier-Mukai transform of a Brill-Noether locus of vector bundles on $C$.
We give a remark on the wall crossing behavior of perverse coherent sheaves on a blow-up and stability condition constructed by Toda. We also explain the wall crossing of twisted stability in terms of stability condition.
We study motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants in the sense of Behrend-Bryan-Szendroi. A wall-crossing formula under a mutation is proved for a certain class of quivers with potentials.
We develop the technique of weight truncation in the context of wall-crossings in birational cobordisms, parallel to that in [HL15, BFK19]. More precisely, for each such wall-crossing, we embed the bounded above derived category of coherent sheaves of the semistable part as a semi-orthogonal summand of that of the stack in question. Our construction does not require any smoothness assumptions, and exhibits a strong symmetry across the two sides of the wall-crossing. As an application, we show that for wall-crossings satisfying suitable regularity conditions, a certain duality of local cohomolo…
Notes from the report at the Fields institute in Toronto. We introduce the Donaldson-Thomas invariants and describe the wall-crossing formulas for numerical Donaldson-Thomas invariants.
Bielliptic surfaces are the last family of Kodaira dimension zero algebraic surfaces without a classification result for the Chern characters of stable sheaves. We rectify this and prove such a classification using a combination of classical techniques, on the one hand, and derived category and Bridgeland stability techniques, on the other. Along the way, we prove the existence of projective coarse moduli spaces of objects in the derived category of a bielliptic surface that Bridgeland semistable with respect to a generic stability condition. By systematically studying the connection between B…
In this article, we treat stability conditions in the sense of King, Bridgeland and Bayer in a single framework. Following King, we begin with weight functions on a triangulated category, and consider increasingly specialised configurations of triangulated categories, t-structures and stability functions that give equivalent categories of stable objects. Along the way, we recover existing results in representation theory and algebraic geometry, and prove a series of new results on elliptic surfaces, including correspondence theorems for Bridgeland stability conditions and polynomial stability …
We prove, under suitable conditions, that there exist wall-crossing and reduction morphisms for moduli spaces of stable log pairs in all dimensions as one varies the coefficients of the divisor.
We compute the cone of effective divisors on the Hilbert scheme of points in the projective plane. We show the sections of many stable vector bundles satisfy a natural interpolation condition, and that these bundles always give rise to the edge of the effective cone of the Hilbert scheme. To do this, we give a generalization of Gaeta's theorem on the resolution of the ideal sheaf of a general collection of points in the plane. This resolution has a natural interpretation in terms of Bridgeland stability, and we observe that ideal sheaves of collections of points are destabilized by exceptional…
For a Fermat quasi-homogeneous polynomial $W$, we study a family of K-theoretic quantum invariants parametrized by a positive rational number $ε$. We prove a wall-crossing formula by showing the generating functions lie on the Lagrangian cone of the permutation-equivariant K-theoretic FJRW theory of $W$.
We compute I-functions and central charges for abelian GLSMs using virtual matrix factorizations of Favero and Kim. In the Calabi-Yau case we provide analytic continuation for the central charges by explicit integral formulas. The integrals in question are called hemisphere partition functions and we call the integral representation Higgs-Coulomb correspondence. We then use it to prove GIT stability wall-crossing for central charges.
We study the birational geometry of deformations of Hilbert schemes of points on the projective plane P2. We complete the picture in the paper of Daniele Arcara, Aaron Bertram, Izzet Coskun and Jack Huizenga by giving an explicit correspondence between the stable base locus walls on the Neron-Severi space and the actual walls on the Bridgeland stability space. We show that the birational geometry of a deformed Hilb P2 is different from that of Hilb P2.
For each positive rational number $ε$, we define $K$-theoretic $ε$-stable quasimaps to certain GIT quotients $W\sslash G$. For $ε>1$, this recovers the $K$-theoretic Gromov-Witten theory of $W\sslash G$ introduced in more general context by Givental and Y.-P. Lee. For arbitrary $ε_1$ and $ε_2$ in different stability chambers, these $K$-theoretic quasimap invariants are expected to be related by wall-crossing formulas. We prove wall-crossing formulas for genus zero $K$-theoretic quasimap theory when the target $W\sslash G$ admits a torus action with isolated fixed points and isolated one-dimens…
