We construct irreducible modules of centrally-extended classical Lie algebras over left ideals of the algebra of differential operators on the circle, through certain irreducible modules of centrally-extended classical Lie algebras of infinite matrices with finite number of nonzero entries. The structures of vertex algebras associated with the vaccum representations of these algebras are determined. Moreover, we prove that under certain conditions, the highest weight irreducible modules of centrally-extended classical Lie algebras of infinite matrices with finite number of nonzero entries narually give rise to the irreducible modules of the simple quotients of these vertex algebras. Our results are natural generalizations of the well-known WZW models in conformal field theory associated with affine Kac-Moody algebras. They can also be viewed as quadratic generalizations of free field theory.
All bialgebra structures for centrally extended Galilei algebra are classified. The corresponding Lie-Poisson structures on centrally extended Galilei group are found.
In this paper we introduce a notion of vertex Lie algebra U, in a way a "half" of vertex algebra structure sufficient to construct the corresponding local Lie algebra L(U) and a vertex algebra V(U). We show that we may consider U as a subset of V(U) which generates V(U) and that the vertex Lie algebra structure on U is induced by the vertex algebra structure on V(U). Moreover, for any vertex algebra V a given homomorphism from U to V of vertex Lie algebras extends uniquely to a homomorphism from V(U) to V of vertex algebras. In the second part of paper we study under what conditions on structu…
In this paper, we give a unified construction of vertex algebras arising from infinite-dimensional Lie algebras, including the affine Kac-Moody algebras, Virasoro algebras, Heisenberg algebras and their higher rank analogs, orbifolds and deformations. We define a notion of what we call quasi vertex Lie algebra to unify these Lie algebras. Starting from any (maximal) quasi vertex Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, we construct a corresponding vertex Lie algebra ${\mathfrak{g}}_0$, and establish a canonical isomorphism between the category of restricted $\mathfrak{g}$-modules and that of equivariant $ϕ…
We associate elliptic affine Lie algebras with what are called vertex $\C((z))$-algebras and their modules in a certain category. In the course, we construct two families of Lie algebras closely related to elliptic affine Lie algebras.
In this paper, we study nullity-2 toroidal extended affine Lie algebras in the context of vertex algebras and their $ϕ$-coordinated modules. Among the main results, we introduce a variant of toroidal extended affine Lie algebras, associate vertex algebras to the variant Lie algebras, and establish a canonical connection between modules for toroidal extended affine Lie algebras and $ϕ$-coordinated modules for these vertex algebras. Furthermore, by employing some results of Billig, we obtain an explicit realization of irreducible modules for the variant Lie algebras.
Based on the loop-algebraic presentation of 2-toroidal Lie superalgebras, free field representation of toroidal Lie superalgebras of type $A(m, n)$ is constructed using both vertex operators and bosonic fields.
In this paper, we present a canonical association of quantum vertex algebras and their $ϕ$-coordinated modules to Lie algebra $\gl_{\infty}$ and its 1-dimensional central extension. To this end we construct and make use of another closely related infinite-dimensional Lie algebra.
In this article, we describe a construction of a holomorphic vertex operator algebras of central charge $24$ whose weight one Lie algebra has type $A_{6,7}$.
Given a simple finite-dimensional Lie algebra and an automorphism of finite order, one defines the notion of a twisted toroidal Lie algebra. In this paper, we construct representations of twisted toroidal Lie algebras from twisted modules over affine and lattice vertex algebras.
We continue a previous study on $Γ$-vertex algebras and their quasimodules. In this paper we refine certain known results and we prove that for any $\Z$-graded vertex algebra $V$ and a positive integer $N$, the category of $V$-modules is naturally isomorphic to the category of quasimodules of a certain type for $V^{\otimes N}$. We also study certain generalizations of twisted affine Lie algebras and we relate such Lie algebras to vertex algebras and their quasimodules, in a way similar to that twisted affine Lie algebras are related to vertex algebras and their twisted modules.
A vertex-algebraic analogue of the Lie algebroid complex is constructed, which generalizes the "small" chiral de Rham complex on smooth manifolds. The notion of VSA-inductive sheaves is also introduced. This notion generalizes that of sheaves of vertex superalgebras. The complex mentioned above is constructed as a VSA-inductive sheaf. With this complex, the equivariant Lie algebroid cohomology is generalized to a vertex-algebraic analogue, which we call the chiral equivariant Lie algebroid cohomology. In fact, the notion of the equivariant Lie algebroid cohomology contains that of the equivari…
We introduce dg Lie algebras controlling the deformations of vertex algebras and vertex Poisson algebras, utilizing the notion of operadic dg Lie algebra and the theory of chiral algebra. In terms of those dg Lie algebras, we formulate the deformation quantization problem of vertex Poisson algebras to vertex algebras.
In this paper, for every $ε\in \mathbb{Z}$, we introduce an extension of the 2-toroidal Lie algebra by certain derivations. Based on the $ϕ_ε$-coordinated modules theory for vertex algebras, we give an explicit realization of a class of irreducible highest weight modules for this extended toroidal Lie algebra. When $ε=1$, this affords a realization of certain irreducible modules for the toroidal extended affine Lie algebras first constructed by Billig.
In this paper, a holomorphic vertex operator algebra $U$ of central charge 24 with the weight one Lie algebra $A_{8,3}A_{2,1}^2$ is proved to be unique. Moreover, a holomorphic vertex operator algebra of central charge 24 with weight one Lie algebra $F_{4,6}A_{2,2}$ is obtained by applying a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-orbifold construction to $U$. The uniqueness of such a vertex operator algebra is also established. By a similar method, we also established the uniqueness of a holomorphic vertex operator algebra of central charge 24 with the weight one Lie algebra $E_{7,3}A_{5,1}$. As a consequence, we ver…
The centrally extended su(2|2) superalgebra is an asymptotic symmetry of the light-cone string sigma model on AdS5 x S5. We consider an evaluation representation of the conventional Yangian built over a particular 16-dimensional long representation of the centrally extended su(2|2). Interestingly, we find that S-matrices compatible with this evaluation representation do not exist. On the other hand, by requiring centrally extended su(2|2) invariance and explicitly solving the Yang-Baxter equation, we find a scattering matrix for long-short representations of the Lie superalgebra. We notice tha…
We establish that the Lie algebra of weight one states in a (strongly) rational vertex operator algebra is reductive, and that its Lie rank is bounded above by the effective central charge. We show that lattice vertex operator algebras may be characterized by the equalities of the effective central charge, the Lie rank and the central charge, and in particular holomorphic lattice theories may be characterized among all holomorphic vertex operator algebras by the equality of the Lie rank and the central charge.
In this paper, we study a family of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras $\widehat{X}_{S}$, where $X$ stands for the type: $A,B,C,D$, and $S$ is an abelian group, which generalize the $A,B,C,D$ series of trigonometric Lie algebras. Among the main results, we identify $\widehat{X}_{S}$ with what are called the covariant algebras of the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathcal{L}_{S}}$ with respect to some automorphism groups, where $\mathcal{L}_{S}$ is an explicitly defined associative algebra viewed as a Lie algebra. We then show that restricted $\widehat{X}_{S}$-modules of level $\ell$ naturally co…
Let $L_{D_{\ell}}(-\ell +{3/2},0)$ (resp. $L_{B_{\ell}}(-\ell +{3/2},0)$) be the simple vertex operator algebra associated to affine Lie algebra of type $D_{\ell}^{(1)}$ (resp. $B_{\ell}^{(1)}$) with the lowest admissible half-integer level $-\ell + {3/2}$. We show that $L_{D_{\ell}}(-\ell +{3/2},0)$ is a vertex subalgebra of $L_{B_{\ell}}(-\ell +{3/2},0)$ with the same conformal vector. For $\ell =4$, $L_{D_{4}}(-{5/2},0)$ is a vertex subalgebra of three copies of $L_{B_{4}}(-{5/2},0)$ contained in $L_{F_{4}}(-{5/2},0)$, and all five of these vertex operator algebras have the same conformal v…
We find sufficient conditions for the construction of vertex algebraic intertwining operators, among generalized Verma modules for an affine Lie algebra $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}$, from $\mathfrak{g}$-module homomorphisms. When $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}_2$, these results extend previous joint work with J. Yang, but the method used here is different. Here, we construct intertwining operators by solving Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations for three-point correlation functions associated to $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}$, and we identify obstructions to the construction arising from the possible non-existence of …
This is a paper in a series systematically to study toroidal vertex algebras. Previously, a theory of toroidal vertex algebras and modules was developed and toroidal vertex algebras were explicitly associated to toroidal Lie algebras. In this paper, we study twisted modules for toroidal vertex algebras. More specifically, we introduce a notion of twisted module for a general toroidal vertex algebra with a finite order automorphism and we give a general construction of toroidal vertex algebras and twisted modules. We then use this construction to establish a natural association of toroidal vert…
For any nullity $2$ extended affine Lie algebra $\mathcal{E}$ of maximal type and $\ell\in\mathbb{C}$, we prove that there exist a vertex algebra $V_{\mathcal{E}}(\ell)$ and an automorphism group $G$ of $V_{\mathcal{E}}(\ell)$ equipped with a linear character $χ$, such that the category of restricted $\mathcal{E}$-modules of level $\ell$ is canonically isomorphic to the category of $(G,χ)$-equivariant $ϕ$-coordinated quasi $V_{\mathcal{E}}(\ell)$-modules. Moreover, when $\ell$ is a nonnegative integer, there is a quotient vertex algebra $L_{\mathcal{E}}(\ell)$ of $V_{\mathcal{E}}(\ell)$ modulo…
In this paper, the structure of cocommutative vertex bialgebras is investigated. For a general vertex bialgebra $V$, it is proved that the set $G(V)$ of group-like elements is naturally an abelian semigroup, whereas the set $P(V)$ of primitive elements is a vertex Lie algebra. For $g\in G(V)$, denote by $V_g$ the connected component containing $g$. Among the main results, it is proved that if $V$ is a cocommutative vertex bialgebra, then $V=\oplus_{g\in G(V)}V_g$, where $V_{\bf 1}$ is a vertex subbialgebra which is isomorphic to the vertex bialgebra ${\mathcal{V}}_{P(V)}$ associated to the ver…
Given a vertex Lie algebra $\mathscr L$ equipped with an action by automorphisms of a cyclic group $Γ$, we define spaces of cyclotomic coinvariants over the Riemann sphere. These are quotients of tensor products of smooth modules over `local' Lie algebras $\mathsf L(\mathscr L)_{z_i}$ assigned to marked points $z_i$, by the action of a `global' Lie algebra ${\mathsf L}^Γ_{\{z_i \}}(\mathscr L)$ of $Γ$-equivariant functions. On the other hand, the universal enveloping vertex algebra $\mathbb V (\mathscr L)$ of $\mathscr L$ is itself a vertex Lie algebra with an induced action of $Γ$. This gives…
We study the family of vertex algebras associated with vertex algebroids, constructed by Gorbounov, Malikov, and Schechtman. As the main result, we classify all the (graded) simple modules for such vertex algebras and we show that the equivalence classes of graded simple modules one-to-one correspond to the equivalence classes of simple modules for the Lie algebroids associated with the vertex algebroids. To achieve our goal, we construct and exploit a Lie algebra from a given vertex algebroid.
This paper studies certain relations among vertex algebras, vertex Lie algebras and vertex Poisson algebras. In this paper, the notions of vertex Lie algebra (conformal algebra) and vertex Poisson algebra are revisited and certain general construction theorems of vertex Poisson algebras are given. A notion of filtered vertex algebra is formulated in terms of a notion of good filtration and it is proved that the associated graded vector space of a filtered vertex algebra is naturally a vertex Poisson algebra. For any vertex algebra $V$, a general construction and a classification of good filtra…
This paper is a continuation of "Quantization of Lie bialgebras I-IV". The goal of this paper is to define and study the notion of a quantum vertex operator algebra in the setting of the formal deformation theory and give interesting examples of such algebras. In particular, we construct a quantum vertex operator algebra from a rational, trigonometric, or elliptic R-matrix, which is a quantum deformation of the affine vertex operator algebra. The simplest vertex operator in this algebra is the quantum current of Reshetikhin and Semenov-Tian-Shansky.
Any variety of classical algebras has a so-called conformal counterpart. For example one can consider Lie conformal or associative conformal algebras. Lie conformal algebras are closely related to vertex algebras. We define free objects in the categories of conformal and vertex algebras. In some cases we can explicitly build their Groebner bases.
A notion of intermediate vertex subalgebras of lattice vertex operator algebras is introduced, as a generalization of the notion of principal subspaces. Bases and the graded dimensions of such subalgebras are given. As an application, it is shown that the characters of some modules of an intermediate vertex subalgebra between $E_7$ and $E_8$ lattice vertex operator algebras satisfy some modular differential equations. This result is an analogue of the result concerning the "hole" of the Deligne dimension formulas and the intermediate Lie algebra between the simple Lie algebras $E_7$ and $E_8$.
In this article, we construct three new holomorphic vertex operator algebras of central charge $24$ using the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-orbifold construction associated to inner automorphisms. Their weight one subspaces has the Lie algebra structures $D_{7,3}A_{3,1}G_{2,1}$, $E_{7,3}A_{5,1}$, and $A_{8,3}A_{2,1}^2$. In addition, we discuss the constructions of holomorphic vertex operator algebras with Lie algebras $A_{5,6}C_{2,3}A_{1,2}$ and $D_{6,5}A_{1,1}^2$ from holomorphic vertex operator algebras with Lie algebras $C_{5,3}G_{2,2}A_{1,1}$ and $A_{4,5}^2$, respectively.
The notions of vertex Lie algebra and vertex Poisson algebra are presented and connections among vertex Lie algebras, vertex Poisson algebras and vertex algebras are discussed.
In this article, we describe the trace formulae of composition of several (up to four) adjoint actions of elements of the Lie algebra of a vertex operator algebra by using the Casimir elements. As an application, we give constraints on the central charge and the dimension of the Lie algebra for vertex operator algebras of class $\mathcal{S}^4$. In addition, we classify vertex operator algebras of class $\mathcal{S}^4$ with minimal conformal weight one under some assumptions.
This is a paper in a series to study vertex algebra-like structures arising from various algebras including quantum affine algebras and Yangians. In this paper, we study notions of $\hbar$-adic nonlocal vertex algebra and $\hbar$-adic (weak) quantum vertex algebra, slightly generalizing Etingof-Kazhdan's notion of quantum vertex operator algebra. For any topologically free $\C[[\h]]$-module $W$, we study $\hbar$-adically compatible subsets and $\hbar$-adically $§$-local subsets of $(\End W)[[x,x^{-1}]]$. We prove that any $\hbar$-adically compatible subset generates an $\hbar$-adic nonlocal ve…
I give a short proof of the following algebraic statement: if a vertex algebra is simple, then its underlying Lie conformal algebra is either abelian, or it is an irreducible central extension of a simple Lie conformal algebra.
In this paper, we explore natural connections among trigonometric Lie algebras, (general) affine Lie algebras, and vertex algebras. Among the main results, we obtain a realization of trigonometric Lie algebras as what were called the covariant algebras of the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathcal{A}}$ of Lie algebra $\mathcal{A}=\frak{gl}_{\infty}\oplus\frak{gl}_{\infty}$ with respect to certain automorphism groups. We then prove that restricted modules of level $\ell$ for trigonometric Lie algebras naturally correspond to equivariant quasi modules for the affine vertex algebras $V_{\widehat{\…
In this article, we develop a general technique for proving the uniqueness of holomorphic vertex operator algebras based on the orbifold construction and its "reverse" process. As an application, we prove that the structure of a strongly regular holomorphic vertex operator algebra of central charge $24$ is uniquely determined by its weight one Lie algebra if the Lie algebra has the type $E_{6,3}G_{2,1}^3$, $A_{2,3}^6$ or $A_{5,3}D_{4,3}A_{1,1}^3$.
We develop a theory of toroidal vertex algebras and their modules, and we give a conceptual construction of toroidal vertex algebras and their modules. As an application, we associate toroidal vertex algebras and their modules to toroidal Lie algebras.
Let $L(-{1/2}(l+1),0)$ be the simple vertex operator algebra associated to an affine Lie algebra of type $A_{l}^{(1)}$ with the lowest admissible half-integer level $-{1/2}(l+1)$, for even l. We study the category of weak modules for that vertex operator algebra which are in category $\cal{O}$ as modules for the associated affine Lie algebra. We classify irreducible objects in that category and prove semisimplicity of that category.
In this article, we study orbifold constructions associated with the Leech lattice vertex operator algebra. As an application, we prove that the structure of a strongly regular holomorphic vertex operator algebra of central charge $24$ is uniquely determined by its weight one Lie algebra if the Lie algebra has the type $A_{3,4}^3A_{1,2}$, $A_{4,5}^2$, $D_{4,12}A_{2,6}$, $A_{6,7}$, $A_{7,4}A_{1,1}^3$, $D_{5,8}A_{1,2}$ or $D_{6,5}A_{1,1}^2$ by using the reverse orbifold construction. Our result also provides alternative constructions of these vertex operator algebras (except for the case $A_{6,7…
I show that simple finite vertex algebras are commutative, and that the Lie conformal algebra structure underlying a reduced (i.e., without nilpotent elements) finite vertex algebra is nilpotent.
Vertex algebras provide an axiomatic algebraic description of the operator product expansion (OPE) of chiral fields in 2-dimensional conformal field theory. Vertex Lie algebras (= Lie conformal algebras) encode the singular part of the OPE, or, equivalently, the commutators of chiral fields. We discuss generalizations of vertex algebras and vertex Lie algebras, which are relevant for higher-dimensional quantum field theory.
A representation of the central extension of the unitary Lie algebra coordinated with a skew Laurent polynomial ring is constructed using vertex operators over an integral Z_2-lattice. The irreducible decomposition of the representation is explicitly computed and described. As a by-product, some fundamental representations of affine Kac-Moody Lie algebra of type $A_n^{(2)}$ are recovered by the new method.
Let $G$ be a simple complex Lie group with Lie algebra $\mf g$ and let $\af$ be the affine Lie algebra. We use intertwining operators and Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations to construct a family of $\N$-graded vertex operator algebras associated to $\mf g$. They are $\af \oplus \af$-modules of dual levels $k, \bar k \notin \Q$ in the sense that $k + \bar k = -2 h^\vee$ where $h^\vee$ is the dual Coxeter number of $\mf g$. Its conformal weight 0 component is the algebra of regular functions on $G$. This family of vertex operator algebras were previously studied by Arkhipov-Gaitsgory and Gorbounov…
In this paper, we prove the categories of lower bounded twisted modules of positive integer levels for simple vertex operator algebras associated with affine Lie algebras and general automorphisms are semisimple, using the twisted generalization of Zhu's algebra for these vertex operator algebras, constructed in \cite{HY}. We also show that the category of lower bounded twisted modules for a general automorphism is equivalent to the category of lower bounded twisted modules for the corresponding diagram automorphism.
This book offers an introduction to vertex algebra based on a new approach. The new approach says that a vertex algebra is an associative algebra such that the underlying Lie algebra is a vertex Lie algebra. In particular, vertex algebras can be formulated in terms of a single multiplication and they behave like associative algebras with respect to it. Chapter 1 is the introduction. In chapter 2 we discuss many examples of vertex Lie algebras and we show that vertex Lie algebras form a full subcategory of the category of "local" Lie algebras. In chapter 3 we introduce associative, commutative,…
A vertex operator algebra of lattice type ADE has a standard integral form which extends a Chevalley basis for its degree 1 Lie algebra. This integral form may be used to define a vertex algebra over a commutative ring $R$ and to get a Chevalley group over $R$ of the same type, acting as automorphisms of this vertex algebra. We define vertex algebras of types BCFG over a commutative ring and certain reduced VAs, then get analogous results about automorphism groups. In characteristics 2 and 3, there are exceptionally large automorphism groups. A covering algebra idea of Frohardt and Griess for …
We provide a rigorous mathematical foundation to the study of strongly rational, holomorphic vertex operator algebras V of central charge c = 8, 16 and 24 initiated by Schellekens. If c = 8 or 16 we show that V is isomorphic to a lattice theory corresponding to a rank c even, self-dual lattice. If c = 24 we prove, among other things, that either V is isomorphic to a lattice theory corresponding to a Niemeier lattice or the Leech lattice, or else the Lie algebra on the weight one subspace V_1 is semisimple (possibly 0) of Lie rank less than 24.
We define an integral intertwining operator among modules for a vertex operator algebra to be an intertwining operator which respects integral forms in the modules, and we show that an intertwining operator is integral if it is integral when restricted to generators of the integral forms in the modules. We apply this result to classify integral intertwining operators which respect certain natural integral forms in modules for affine Lie algebra and lattice vertex operator algebras.
In this paper, vertex representations of the 2-toroidal Lie superalgebras of type $D(m, n)$ are constructed using both bosonic fields and vertex operators based on their loop algebraic presentation.
We revisit the construction of integral forms for vertex (operator) algebras $V_L$ based on even lattices $L$ using generators instead of bases, and we construct integral forms for $V_L$-modules. We construct integral forms for vertex (operator) algebras based on highest-weight modules for affine Lie algebras and we exhibit natural generating sets. For vertex operator algebras in general, we give conditions showing when an integral form contains the standard conformal vector generating the Virasoro algebra. Finally, we study integral forms in contragredients of modules for vertex algebras.
We introduce the notion of vertex coalgebra, a generalization of vertex operator coalgebras. Next we investigate forms of cocommutativity, coassociativity, skew-symmetry, and an endomorphism, $D^*$, which hold on vertex coalgebras. The former two properties require grading. We then discuss comodule structure. We conclude by discussing instances where graded vertex coalgebras appear, particularly as related to Primc's vertex Lie algebra and (universal) enveloping vertex algebras.
Let $\tilde{\mathfrak{g}}$ be the affine Lie algebra of type $A_{2l}^{(2)}$. The integrable highest weight $\tilde{\mathfrak{g}}$-module $L(kΛ_0)$ called the standard $\tilde{\mathfrak{g}}$-module is realized by a tensor product of the twisted module $V_L^T$ for the lattice vertex operator algebra $V_L$. By using such vertex algebraic construction, we construct bases of the standard module, its principal subspace and the parafermionic space. As a consequence, we obtain their character formulas and settle the conjecture for vacuum modules stated in arXiv:math/0102113.
