We establish that the Lie algebra of weight one states in a (strongly) rational vertex operator algebra is reductive, and that its Lie rank is bounded above by the effective central charge. We show that lattice vertex operator algebras may be characterized by the equalities of the effective central charge, the Lie rank and the central charge, and in particular holomorphic lattice theories may be characterized among all holomorphic vertex operator algebras by the equality of the Lie rank and the central charge.
The lattice vertex operator V_L associated to a positive definite even lattice L has an automorphism of order 2 lifted from -1 isometry of L. It is established that the fixed point vertex operator algebra V_L^+ is rational.
A characterization of vertex operator algebra $V_L^+$ for any rank one positive definite even lattice $L$ is given in terms of dimensions of homogeneous subspaces of small weights. This result reduces the classification of rational vertex operator algebras of central charge 1 to the characterization of three vertex operator algebras in the $E$-series of central charge one.
It is proved that g-rationality of a vertex operator superalgebra V=V_{\bar0}+V_{\bar1} for all g in G imply rationality of V^G, and also imply that each irreducible V^G-module is a submodule of an irreducible g-twisted V-module for some g in G, where G is any finite abelian subgroup of Aut(V). We also prove that for any finite solvable G, rationality of V^G implies g-rationality of V for any g in G.
In this paper we prove that the vertex algebra $V_L^+$ is rational if $L$ is a negative definite even lattice of finite rank, or if $L$ is a non-degenerate even lattice of a finite rank that is neither positive definite nor negative definite. In particular, for such even lattices $L$, we show that the Zhu algebras of the vertex algebras $V_L^+$ are semisimple. This extends the result of Abe which establishes the rationality of $V_L^+$ when $L$ is a positive definite even lattice of finite rank.
In vertex operator algebra theories, most of the general theorems are proved under the assumptions of rationality and C_2-cofiniteness. In this paper, we obtain several general theorems without the assumption of rationality so that we can use them for proving rationality of given C_2-cofinite vertex operator algebras. For example, we apply them to orbifold models and show that if g is a finite automorphism of a rational C_2-cofinite vertex operator algebra T of CFT-type with T'\cong T and a fixed point subVOA T^g is C_2-cofinite, then T^g is also rational.
In this paper, it is shown that the diagonal coset vertex operator algebra $C(L_{\mathfrak{g}}(k+2,0),L_{\mathfrak{g}}(k,0)\otimes L_{\mathfrak{g}}(2,0))$ is rational and $C_2$-cofinite in case $\mathfrak{g}=so(2n), n\geq 3$ and $k$ is an admissible number for $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}$. It is also shown that the diagonal coset vertex operator algebra $C(L_{sl_2}(k+4,0),L_{sl_2}(k,0)\otimes L_{sl_2}(4,0))$ is rational and $C_2$-cofinite in case $k$ is an admissible number for $\hat{sl_2}$. Furthermore, irreducible modules of $C(L_{sl_2}(k+4,0),L_{sl_2}(k,0)\otimes L_{sl_2}(4,0))$ are classified in c…
Vertex operator superalgebras are studied and various results on rational Vertex operator superalgebras are obtained. In particular, the vertex operator super subalgebras generated by the weight 1/2 and weight 1 subspaces are determined. It is also established that if the even part $V_{\bar 0}$ of a vertex operator superalgebra $V$ is rational, so is $V.$
The rational vertex operator algebra $V_{L_{2}}^{A_{4}}$ is characterized in terms of weights of primary vectors. This reduces the classification of rational vertex operator algebras with $c=1$ to the characterizations of $V_{L_{2}}^{S_{4}}$ and $V_{L_{2}}^{A_{5}}.$
It is proved that any vertex operator algebra for which the image of the Virasoro element in Zhu's algebra is algebraic over complex numbers is finitely generated. In particular, any vertex operator algebra with a finite dimensional Zhu's algebra is finitely generated. As a result, any rational vertex operator algebra is finitely generated.
We demonstrate that, for CFT vertex operator algebras, C_2-cofiniteness and rationality is equivalent to regularity. In addition, we show that, for C_2-cofinite vertex operators algebras, irreducible weak modules are ordinary modules and C_2-cofinite, and V_L^+ are C_2-cofinite.
The rational and C_2-cofinite simple vertex operator algebras whose effective central charges and the central charges c are equal and less than 1 are classified. Such a vertex operator algebra is zero if c<0 and C if c=0. If c>0, it is an extension of discrete Virasoro vertex operator algebra L(c_{p,q},0) by its irreducible modules. It is also proved that for any rational and C_2-cofinite simple vertex operator algebra whose effective central charge and central charge are equal, the vertex operator subalgebra generated by the Virasoro vector is simple.
It is shown that a simple vertex operator algebra V is rational if and only if its Zhu algebra A(V) is semisimple and each irreducible admissible V-module is ordinary. A contravariant form on a Verma type admissible V-module is constructed and the radical is exactly the maximal proper submodule. As an application the rationality of V_L^+ for any positive definite even lattice is obtained.
We present explicit global constructions - avoiding power series - of certain chiral CFTs, including current algebras on the projective line. We outline an approach to vertex algebras, inspired by this construction. We construct natural pairings on state spaces.
The lattice vertex operator algebra $V_L$ associated to a positive definite even lattice $L$ has an automorphism of order 2 lifted from -1-isometry of $L$. We prove that for the fixed point vertex operator algebra $V_L^+$, any $\Z_{\geq0}$-graded weak modules is completely reducible.
Q-operators for generalised eight vertex models associated to higher spin representations of the Sklyanin algebra are constructed by Baxter's first method and Fabricius's method, when the anisotropy parameter is rational.
We study the vertex algebras associated with modular invariant representations of affine Kac-Moody algebras at fractional levels, whose simple highest weight modules are classified by Joseph's characteristic varieties. We show that an irreducible highest weight representation of a non-twisted affine Kac-Moody algebra at an admissible level k is a module over the associated simple affine vertex algebra if and only if it is an admissible representation whose integral root system is isomorphic to that of the vertex algebra itself. This in particular proves the conjecture of Adamovic and Milas on …
The extensions of the affine vertex operator algebras $L_{sl_2}(k,0)$ and the preunitary vertex operator algebras with central charges $c<1$ are classified. In particular, the unitary vertex operator algebras with central charges $c<1$ are classified.
We prove the conjecture of Kac-Wakimoto on the rationality of exceptional W-algebras for the first non-trivial series, namely, for the Bershadsky-Polyakov vertex algebras $W_3^{(2)}$ at level $k=p/2-3$ with $p=3,5,7,...$. This gives new examples of rational conformal field theories.
We reformed the tensor product theory of vertex operator algebras developed by Huang and Lepowsky so that we could apply it to all vertex operator algebras satisfying C_2-cofiniteness. We also showed that the tensor product theory develops naturally if we include not only ordinary modules, but also weak modules with a composition series of finite length (we call it an Artin module). In particular, we don't assume the semisimplicity of the weight operator L(0). Actually, without the assumption of rationality, a C_2-cofiniteness on V is enough to obtain the existence of a tensor product of two A…
A regular vertex operator algebra is a vertex operator algebra such that any weak module (without grading) is a direct sum of ordinary irreducible modules. In this paper we give several sufficient conditions under which a rational vertex operator algebra is regular. We prove that the moonshine module vertex operator algebra $V^{\natural},$ the vertex operator algebras $L(l,0)$ associated with the integrable representations of affine algebras of level $l,$ the vertex operator algebras $L(c_{p,q},0)$ associated with irreducible highest weight representations for the discrete series of the Viraso…
This article is a continuation of our work on the classification of holomorphic framed vertex operator algebras of central charge 24. We show that a holomorphic framed VOA of central charge 24 is uniquely determined by the Lie algebra structure of its weight one subspace. As a consequence, we completely classify all holomorphic framed vertex operator algebras of central charge 24 and show that there exist exactly 56 such vertex operator algebras, up to isomorphism.
We study modularity of the characters of a vertex (super)algebra equipped with a family of conformal structures. Along the way we introduce the notions of rationality and cofiniteness relative to such a family. We apply the results to determine modular transformations of trace functions on admissible modules over affine Kac-Moody algebras and, via BRST reduction, trace functions on minimal series representations of principal affine W-algebras.
This paper studies the twisted representations of vertex operator algebras. Let V be a vertex operator algebra and g an automorphism of V of finite order T. For any m,n in (1/T)Z_+, an A_{g,n}(V)-A_{g,m}(V)-bimodule A_{g,n,m}(V) is constructed. The collection of these bimodules determines any admissible g-twisted V-module completely. A Verma type admissible g-twisted V-module is constructed naturally from any A_{g,m}(V)-module. Furthermore, it is shown with the help of bimodule theory that a simple vertex operator algebra V is g-rational if and only if its twisted associative algebra A_g(V) is…
Let $L((n-\tfrac 3 2)Λ_0)$, $n \in \Bbb N$, be a vertex operator algebra associated to the irreducible highest weight module $L((n-\tfrac 3 2)Λ_0)$ for a symplectic affine Lie algebra. We find a complete set of irreducible modules for $L((n-\tfrac 3 2)Λ_0)$ and show that every module for $L((n-\tfrac 3 2)Λ_0)$ from the category $\Cal O$ is completely reducible.
In this article, we describe a construction of a holomorphic vertex operator algebras of central charge $24$ whose weight one Lie algebra has type $A_{6,7}$.
Unitary vertex operator algebras are introduced and studied. It is proved that most well-known rational vertex operator algebras are unitary. The classification of unitary vertex operator algebras with central charge c less than or equal to 1 is also discussed.
In this paper we study a series of vertex operator algebras of integer level associated to the affine Lie algebra $A_{\ell}^{(1)}$. These vertex operator algebras are constructed by using the explicit construction of certain singular vectors in the universal affine vertex operator algebra $N(n-2,0)$ at the integer level. In the case $n=1$ or $l=2$, we explicitly determine Zhu's algebras and classify all irreducible modules in the category $\mathcal{O}$. In the case $l=2$, we show that the vertex operator algebra $N(n-2,0)$ contains two linearly independent singular vectors of the same conforma…
If a vertex operator algebra $V=\oplus_{n=0}^{\infty}V_n$ satisfies $\dim V_0=1, V_1=0$, then $V_2$ has a commutative (nonassociative) algebra structure called Griess algebra. One of the typical examples of commutative (nonassociative) algebras is a Jordan algebra. For example, the set $Sym_d(\C)$ of symmetric matrices of degree $d$ becomes a Jordan algebra. On the other hand, in the theory of vertex operator algebras, central charges influence the properties of vertex operator algebras. In this paper, we construct vertex operator algebras with central charge $c$ and its Griess algebra is isom…
In this paper we prove the rationality of the capped vertex function with descendents for arbitrary Nakajima quiver varieties with generic stability conditions. We generalise the proof given by Smirnov to the general case, which requires to use techniques of tautological classes rather than the fixed-point basis. This result confirms that the "monodromy" of the capped vertex function is trivial, which gives a strong constraint for the monodromy of the capping operators. We will also provide a GIT wall-crossing formula for the capped vertex function in terms of the quantum difference operators …
The quantum dimensions of modules for vertex operator algebras are defined and their properties are discussed. The possible values of the quantum dimensions are obtained for rational vertex operator algebras. A criterion for simple currents of a rational vertex operator algebra is given. A full Galois theory for rational vertex operator algebras is established using the quantum dimensions.
We study the properties of shifted vertex operator algebras, which are vertex algebras derived from a given theory by shifting the conformal vector. In this way, we are able to exhibit large numbers of vertex operator algebras which are regular(rational and C_2-cofinite) and yet are pathological in one way or another.
A characterization of vertex operator algebra V_{Zα}^+ with (α,α)/2 not being a perfect square is given in terms of dimensions of homogeneous subspaces of small weights. This result contributes to the classification of rational vertex operator algebras of central charge 1.
In this paper, a holomorphic vertex operator algebra $U$ of central charge 24 with the weight one Lie algebra $A_{8,3}A_{2,1}^2$ is proved to be unique. Moreover, a holomorphic vertex operator algebra of central charge 24 with weight one Lie algebra $F_{4,6}A_{2,2}$ is obtained by applying a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-orbifold construction to $U$. The uniqueness of such a vertex operator algebra is also established. By a similar method, we also established the uniqueness of a holomorphic vertex operator algebra of central charge 24 with the weight one Lie algebra $E_{7,3}A_{5,1}$. As a consequence, we ver…
The rationality and C_2-cofiniteness of the orbifold vertex operator algebra V_{L_{2}}^{A_{4}} are established and all the irreducible modules are constructed and classified. This is part of classification of rational vertex operator algebras with c=1.
In this paper, extensions of nonunitary rational Virasoro vertex operator algebras corresponding to some exceptional modular invariants are constructed. The uniqueness of these extensions is also established.
We prove that all holomorphic vertex operator algebras of central charge $24$ with non-trivial weight one subspaces are unitary. The main method is to use the orbifold construction of a holomorphic VOA $V$ of central charge $24$ directly from a Niemeier lattice VOA $V_N$. We show that it is possible to extend the unitary form for the lattice VOA $V_N$ to the holomorphic VOA $V$ by using the orbifold construction and some information of the automorphism group $\mathrm{Aut}(V)$.
Let $\D$ be the Lie algebra of regular differentialoperators on ${\C} \setminus \{0\}$, and ${\hD}= {\D} + {\C} C$ be the central extension of ${\D}$. Let $W_{1+\infty,-N}$ be the vertex algebra associated to the irreducible vacuum $\hD$-module with the central charge $c=-N$. We show that $W_{1+\infty,-N}$ is a subalgebra of the Heisenberg vertex algebra M(1) with $2 N$ generators, and construct 2N-dimensional family of irreducible $W_{1+\infty,-N}$-modules. Considering these modules as $\hD$-modules, we identify the corresponding highest weights.
Using the Zhu algebra for a certain category of $\mathbb{C}$-graded vertex algebras $V$, we prove that if $V$ is finitely $Ω$-generated and satisfies suitable grading conditions, then $V$ is rational, i.e. has semi-simple representation theory, with one dimensional level zero Zhu algebra. Here $Ω$ denotes the vectors in $V$ that are annihilated by lowering the real part of the grading. We apply our result to the family of rank one Weyl vertex algebras with conformal element $ω_μ$ parameterized by $μ\in \mathbb{C}$, and prove that for certain non-integer values of $μ$, these vertex algebras, wh…
We study properties of a C_2-cofinite vertex operator algebra of CFT type. If it is also rational and V'\cong V, then the rigidity of the tensor category of modules has been proved by Huang. When we treat an irrational C_2-cofinite VOA, the rigidity is too strong, because it is almost equivalent to be rational as we see. We introduce a natural weaker condition "semi-rigidity". Under this condition, we prove the following results. For a projective cover P of a V-module V and a finitely generated V-module M, the projective cover of M is a direct summand of the tensor product P\boxtimes M defined…
We construct irreducible modules of centrally-extended classical Lie algebras over left ideals of the algebra of differential operators on the circle, through certain irreducible modules of centrally-extended classical Lie algebras of infinite matrices with finite number of nonzero entries. The structures of vertex algebras associated with the vaccum representations of these algebras are determined. Moreover, we prove that under certain conditions, the highest weight irreducible modules of centrally-extended classical Lie algebras of infinite matrices with finite number of nonzero entries naru…
This paper is an exposition of the representation theory of vertex operator algebras in terms of associative algebras A_n(V) and their bimodules. A new result on the rationality is given. That is, a simple vertex operator algebra V is rational if and only if its Zhu algebra A(V) is a semisimple associative algebra and each irreducible admissible $V$-module is ordinary.
In this article, we study module categries of simple current extensions of vertex operator algebras. Under certain assumptions, we show that every module for a rational vertex operator algebra be lifted to a twisted module for an extended algebra with an abelian symmetry.
We introduce the $h$-adic quantum vertex algebras associated with the rational $R$-matrix in types $B$, $C$ and $D$, thus generalizing the Etingof--Kazhdan's construction in type $A$. Next, we construct the algebraically independent generators of the center of the $h$-adic quantum vertex algebra in type $B$ at the critical level, as well as the families of central elements in types $C$ and $D$. Finally, as an application, we obtain commutative subalgebras of the dual Yangian and the families of central elements of the appropriately completed double Yangian at the critical level, in types $B$, …
We show that C_2-cofiniteness is enough to prove a modular invariance property of vertex operator algebras without assuming the semisimplicity of Zhu algebra. For example, if a VOA V=\oplus_{m=0}^{\infty}V_m is C_2-cofinite, then the space spanned by generalized characters of V-modules is invariant under the action of SL_2(\Z). In this case, the central charge and conformal weights are all rational numbers. Namely, a VOA satisfying C_2-cofiniteness is a rational conformal field theory in a sense. We also show that C_2-cofiniteness is equivalent to the condition that every weak module is an \N-…
For a vertex operator algebra V, a V-module M and a nonnegative integer n, an A_n(V)-bimodule A_n(M) is constructed and studied. The connection between A_n(M) and intertwining operators are discussed. In the case that V is rational, A_n(M) for irreducible V-module M is given explicitly.
We provide a rigorous mathematical foundation to the study of strongly rational, holomorphic vertex operator algebras V of central charge c = 8, 16 and 24 initiated by Schellekens. If c = 8 or 16 we show that V is isomorphic to a lattice theory corresponding to a rank c even, self-dual lattice. If c = 24 we prove, among other things, that either V is isomorphic to a lattice theory corresponding to a Niemeier lattice or the Leech lattice, or else the Lie algebra on the weight one subspace V_1 is semisimple (possibly 0) of Lie rank less than 24.
The admissible modules for $\hat{sl}_2$ are studied from the point of view of vertex operator algebra. If $l$ is rational such that $l+2={p\over q}$ for some coprime positive integers $p\ge 2$ and $q$, Kac and Wakimoto found finitely many distinguished irreducible representations for $\hat{sl}_2$, called admissible representations. In this paper we prove that the vertex operator algebra $L(l,0)$ associated to irreducible highest weight representation of $l$ is not rational if $l$ is not a positive integer. However if we change the Virasoro algebra in certain way, $L(l,0)$ becomes a rational ve…
We will partially classify spaces of characters of vertex operator algebras $V$ with central charges 8 and 16, such that the spaces of characters is 3-dimensional and the characters forms a basis of the solution space of a third order monic modular linear differential equation with rational indicial roots. Assuming a mild arithmetic condition, we show that the space of characters of $V$ coincides with the space of characters of lattice vertex operators associated with integral lattices $\sqrt{2}E_8$ or the affine vertex operator algebra of type $D_{20}^{(1)}$ for $c=8$, and the Barnes--Wall la…
We associate a deformation of Heisenberg algebra to the suitably normalized Yang $R$-matrix and we investigate its properties. Moreover, we construct new examples of quantum vertex algebras which possess the same representation theory as the aforementioned deformed Heisenberg algebra.
The vertex operator algebra structure of a strongly regular holomorphic vertex operator algebra $V$ of central charge $24$ is proved to be uniquely determined by the Lie algebra structure of its weight one space $V_1$ if $V_1$ is a Lie algebra of the type $A_{1,4}^{12}$, $B_{2,2}^6$, $B_{3,2}^4$, $B_{4,2}^3$, $B_{6,2}^2$, $B_{12,2}$, $D_{4,2}^2B_{2,1}^4$, $D_{8,2}B_{4,1}^2$, $A_{3,2}^4A_{1,1}^4$, $D_{5,2}^2A_{3,1}^2$, $D_{9,2}A_{7,1}$, $C_{4,1}^4$ or $D_{6,2}B_{3,1}^2C_{4,1}$.
We investigate vertex operator algebras $L(k,0)$ associated with modular-invariant representations for an affine Lie algebra $A_1 ^{(1)}$ , where k is 'admissible' rational number. We show that VOA $L(k,0)$ is rational in the category $\cal O$ and find all irreducible representations in the category of weight modules.
