Let $\D$ be the Lie algebra of regular differentialoperators on ${\C} \setminus \{0\}$, and ${\hD}= {\D} + {\C} C$ be the central extension of ${\D}$. Let $W_{1+\infty,-N}$ be the vertex algebra associated to the irreducible vacuum $\hD$-module with the central charge $c=-N$. We show that $W_{1+\infty,-N}$ is a subalgebra of the Heisenberg vertex algebra M(1) with $2 N$ generators, and construct 2N-dimensional family of irreducible $W_{1+\infty,-N}$-modules. Considering these modules as $\hD$-modules, we identify the corresponding highest weights.
In this paper, we present a canonical association of quantum vertex algebras and their $ϕ$-coordinated modules to Lie algebra $\gl_{\infty}$ and its 1-dimensional central extension. To this end we construct and make use of another closely related infinite-dimensional Lie algebra.
We study the simple Bershadsky-Polyakov algebra $\mathcal W_k = \mathcal{W}_k(sl_3,f_θ)$ at positive integer levels and classify their irreducible modules. In this way we confirm the conjecture from arXiv:1910.13781. Next, we study the case $k=1$. We discover that this vertex algebra has a Kazama-Suzuki-type dual isomorphic to the simple afine vertex superalgebra $L_{k'} (osp(1 \vert 2))$ for $k'=-5/4$. Using the free-field realization of $L_{k'} (osp(1 \vert 2))$ from arXiv:1711.11342, we get a free-field realization of $\mathcal W_k$ and their highest weight modules. In a sequel, we plan to …
In this note we study holomorphic integer graded vertex superalgebras. We prove that all such vertex superalgebras of central charge 8 and 16 are purely even. For the case of central charge 24 we prove that the weight-one Lie superalgebra is either zero, of superdimension 24, or else is one of an explicit list of 1332 semisimple Lie superalgebras.
Let $r \in \BC$ be a complex number, and $d \in \BZ_{\ge 2}$ a positive integer greater than or equal to 2. Ashihara and Miyamoto introduced a vertex operator algebra $\Vam$ of central charge $dr$, whose Griess algebra is isomorphic to the simple Jordan algebra of symmetric matrices of size $d$. In this paper, we prove that the vertex operator algebra $\Vam$ is simple if and only if $r$ is not an integer. Further, in the case that $r$ is an integer (i.e., $\Vam$ is not simple), we give a generator system of the maximal proper ideal $I_{r}$ of the VOA $\Vam$ explicitly.
Let L(n-l+1/2,0) be the vertex operator algebra associated to an affine Lie algebra of type B_l^(1) at level n-l+1/2, for a positive integer n. We classify irreducible L(n-l+1/2,0)-modules and show that every L(n-l+1/2,0)-module is completely reducible. In the special case n=1, we study a category of weak L(-l+3/2,0)-modules which are in the category $\cal{O}$ as modules for the associated affine Lie algebra. We classify irreducible objects in that category and prove semisimplicity of that category.
In this paper, we investigate the Lie algebra structures of weight one subspaces of $C_2$-cofinite vertex operator superalgebras. We also show that for any positive integer $k$, vertex operator superalgebras $L_{sl(1|n+1)}(k,0)$ and $L_{osp(2|2n)}(k,0)$ have infinitely many irreducible admissible modules. As a consequence, we give a proof of the fact that $L_{\mathfrak g}(k,0)$ is $C_2$-cofinite if and only if $\mathfrak g$ is either a simple Lie algebra, or $\mathfrak g=osp(1|2n)$, and $k$ is a nonnegative integer. As an application, we show that $L_{G(3)}(1,0)$ is a vertex operator superalge…
The trace functions for the Parafermion vertex operator algebra associated to any finite dimensional simple Lie algebra $\g$ and any positive integer $k$ are studied and an explicit modular transformation formula of the trace functions is obtained.
This is a sequel to \cite{li-qva1} and \cite{li-qva2} in a series to study vertex algebra-like structures arising from various algebras such as quantum affine algebras and Yangians. In this paper, we study two versions of the double Yangian $DY_{\hbar}(sl_{2})$, denoted by $DY_{q}(sl_{2})$ and $DY_{q}^{\infty}(sl_{2})$ with $q$ a nonzero complex number. For each nonzero complex number $q$, we construct a quantum vertex algebra $V_{q}$ and prove that every $DY_{q}(sl_{2})$-module is naturally a $V_{q}$-module. We also show that $DY_{q}^{\infty}(sl_{2})$-modules are what we call $V_{q}$-modules-…
For a vertex operator algebra V, a V-module M and a nonnegative integer n, an A_n(V)-bimodule A_n(M) is constructed and studied. The connection between A_n(M) and intertwining operators are discussed. In the case that V is rational, A_n(M) for irreducible V-module M is given explicitly.
For every $m \in {\C} \setminus \{0, -2\}$ and every nonnegative integer $k$ we define the vertex operator (super)algebra $D_{m,k}$ having two generators and rank $ \frac{3 m}{m + 2}$. If $m$ is a positive integer then $D_{m,k}$ can be realized as a subalgebra of a lattice vertex algebra. In this case, we prove that $D_{m,k}$ is a regular vertex operator (super)algebra and find the number of inequivalent irreducible modules.
We give a criterion for the complete reducibility of modules satisfying a composability condition for a meromorphic open-string vertex algebra $V$ using the first cohomology of the algebra. For a $V$-bimodule $M$, let $\hat{H}^{1}_{\infty}(V, M)$ be the first cohomology of $V$ with the coefficients in $M$. Let $\hat{Z}^{1}_{\infty}(V, M)$ be the subspace of $\hat{H}^{1}_{\infty}(V, M)$ canonically isomorphic to the space of derivations obtained from the zero mode of the right vertex operators of weight $1$ elements such that the difference between the skew-symmetric opposite action of the left…
In this paper, we explore natural connections among the representations of the extended affine Lie algebra $\widehat{sl_N}(\mathbb{C}_q)$ with $\mathbb{C}_q=\mathbb{C}_q[t_0^{\pm1},t_1^{\pm1}]$ an irrational quantum 2-torus, the simple affine vertex algebra $L_{\widehat{sl_{\infty}}}(\ell,0)$ with $\ell$ a positive integer, and Levi subgroups $G$ of $GL_\ell(\mathbb{C})$. First, we give a canonical isomorphism between the category of integrable restricted $\widehat{sl_N}(\mathbb{C}_q)$-modules of level $\ell$ and that of equivariant quasi $L_{\widehat{sl_{\infty}}}(\ell,0)$-modules. Second, we…
Let M(1) be the vertex algebra for a single free boson. We classify irreducible modules of certain vertex subalgebras of M(1) generated by two generators. These subalgebras correspond to the W(2, 2p-1)--algebras with central charge $1- 6 \frac{(p - 1) ^{2}}{p}$ where p is a positive integer, $p \ge 2$. We also determine the associated Zhu's algebras.
We study $ϕ_ε$-coordinated modules for vertex algebras, where $ϕ_ε$ with $ε$ an integer parameter is a family of associates of the one-dimensional additive formal group. As the main results, we obtain a Jacobi type identity and a commutator formula for $ϕ_ε$-coordinated modules. We then use these results to study $ϕ_ε$-coordinated modules for vertex algebras associated to Novikov algebras by Primc.
We prove the longstanding physics conjecture that there exists a unique two-parameter $\mathcal{W}_{\infty}$-algebra which is freely generated of type $\mathcal{W}(2,3,\dots)$, and generated by the weights $2$ and $3$ fields. Subject to some mild constraints, all vertex algebras of type $\mathcal{W}(2,3,\dots, N)$ for some $N$ can be obtained as quotients of this universal algebra. As an application, we show that for $n\geq 3$, the structure constants for the principal $\mathcal{W}$-algebras $\mathcal{W}^k(\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}_n, f_{\text{prin}})$ are rational functions of $k$ and $n$, and…
In this paper we study fields satisfying $N$-point locality and their properties. We obtain residue formulae for $N$-point local fields in terms of derivatives of delta functions and Bell polynomials. We introduce the notion of the space of descendants of $N$-point local fields which includes normal ordered products and coefficients of operator product expansions. We show that examples of $N$-point local fields include the vertex operators generating the boson-fermion correspondences of type B, C and D-A. We apply the normal ordered products of these vertex operators to the setting of the repr…
In this paper, we study an impact of Leibniz algebras on the algebraic structure of $\mathbb{N}$-graded vertex algebras. We provide easy ways to characterize indecomposable non-simple $\mathbb{N}$-graded vertex algebras $\oplus_{n=0}^{\infty}V_{(n)}$ such that $\dim V_{(0)}\geq 2$. Also, we examine the algebraic structure of $\mathbb{N}$-graded vertex algebras $V=\oplus_{n=0}^{\infty}V_{(n)}$ such that $\dim~V_{(0)}\geq 2$ and $V_{(1)}$ is a (semi)simple Leibniz algebra that has $sl_2$ as its Levi factor. We show that under suitable conditions this type of vertex algebra is indecomposable but …
Adler, Shiota and van Moerbeke obtained for the KP and Toda lattice hierarchies a formula which translates the action of the vertex operator on tau--functions to an action of a vertex operator of pseudo-differential operators on wave functions. This relates the additional symmetries of the KP and Toda lattice hierarchyto the $W_{1+\infty}$--, respectively $W_{1+\infty}\times W_{1+\infty}$--algebra symmeties. In this paper we generalize the results to the $s$--component KP hierarchy. The vertex operators generate the algebra $W_{1+\infty}(gl_s)$, the matrix version of $W_{1+\infty}$. Since the …
The monoidal category of twisted modules of a Vertex Operator Algebra $V$ is defined and reduced to its 2-group of invertible objects $G_α$, which can be described by a 3-cocycle $α$ on its 0-truncation $G$ with values in the group of units $A$ of the field of definition of $V$ serving as its associator. This cocycle also presents the classifying morphism of an $\infty$-group extension of $G$ by the delooping $BA$. Motivated by this, it is proven that the $\infty$-group extension classified by a 3-cocycle $α$ is presented by the skeletal 2-group $G_α$ with associator $α$. The results are discu…
In this paper we study a series of vertex operator algebras of integer level associated to the affine Lie algebra $A_{\ell}^{(1)}$. These vertex operator algebras are constructed by using the explicit construction of certain singular vectors in the universal affine vertex operator algebra $N(n-2,0)$ at the integer level. In the case $n=1$ or $l=2$, we explicitly determine Zhu's algebras and classify all irreducible modules in the category $\mathcal{O}$. In the case $l=2$, we show that the vertex operator algebra $N(n-2,0)$ contains two linearly independent singular vectors of the same conforma…
The rationality of the parafermion vertex operator algebra associated to any finite dimensional simple Lie algebra and any nonnegative integer is established and the irreducible modules are determined.
For every partition of a positive integer $n$ in $k$ parts and every point of an infinite Grassmannian we obtain a solution of the $k$ component differential-difference KP hierarchy and a corresponding Baker function. A partition of $n$ also determines a vertex operator construction of the fundamental representations of the infinite matrix algebra $gl_\infty$ and hence a $τ$ function. We use these fundamental representations to study the Gauss decomposition in the infinite matrix group $Gl_\infty$ and to express the Baker function in terms of $τ$-functions. The reduction to loop algebras is di…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero. This paper studies a problem proposed by Joseph F. Ritt in 1950. Precisely, we prove that (1) If $p\geq 2$ is an integer, for every integer $i\in\mathbb{N}$, the nilpotency index of the image of $T_i$ in the ring $k\{T\}/[T^p]$ equals $(i+1)p-i$. (2) For every pair of integers $(i,j)$, the nilpotency index of the image of $T_iU_j$ in the ring $k\{T\}/[TU]$ equals $i+j+1$.
We consider the Whittaker modules $M_{1}(λ,μ)$ for the Weyl vertex algebra $M$, constructed in arXiv:1811.04649, where it was proved that these modules are irreducible for each finite cyclic orbifold $M^{\Bbb Z_n}$. In this paper, we consider the modules $M_{1}(λ,μ)$ as modules for the ${\Bbb Z}$-orbifold of $M$, denoted by $M^0$. $M^0$ is isomorphic to the vertex algebra $\mathcal W_{1+\infty, c=-1} = \mathcal M(2) \otimes M_1(1)$ which is the tensor product of the Heisenberg vertex algebra $M_1(1)$ and the singlet algebra $\mathcal M(2)$. Furthermore, these modules are also modules of the Li…
We show that the vertex algebra W{1+ \infty} with central charge -1 is isomorphic to a tensor product of the simple W_3 algebra with central charge -2 and a Heisenberg vertex algebra generated by a free bosonic field. We construct a family of irreducible modules of the W_3 algebra with central charge -2 in terms of free fields and calculate the full character formulas of these modules with respect to the full Cartan subalgebra of the W_3 algebra.
For every positive integer $n$, the quantum integer $[n]_q$ is the polynomial $[n]_q = 1 + q + q^2 + ... + q^{n-1}.$ A quadratic addition rule for quantum integers consists of sequences of polynomials $\mathcal{R}' = \{r'_n(q)\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$, $\mathcal{S}' = \{s'_n(q)\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$, and $\mathcal{T}' = \{t'_{m,n}(q)\}_{m,n=1}^{\infty}$ such that $[m+n]_q = r'_n(q)[m]_q + s'_m(q)[n]_q + t'_{m,n}(q)[m]_q[n]_q$ for all $m$ and $n.$ This paper gives a complete classification of quadratic addition rules, and also considers sequences of polynomials \polf that satisfy the associated functional…
The irreducible modules for the parafermion vertex operator algebra associated to any finite dimensional Lie algebra and any positive integer are identified, the quantum dimensions are computed and the fusion rules are determined.
The admissible modules for $\hat{sl}_2$ are studied from the point of view of vertex operator algebra. If $l$ is rational such that $l+2={p\over q}$ for some coprime positive integers $p\ge 2$ and $q$, Kac and Wakimoto found finitely many distinguished irreducible representations for $\hat{sl}_2$, called admissible representations. In this paper we prove that the vertex operator algebra $L(l,0)$ associated to irreducible highest weight representation of $l$ is not rational if $l$ is not a positive integer. However if we change the Virasoro algebra in certain way, $L(l,0)$ becomes a rational ve…
In this paper, we explore natural connections among trigonometric Lie algebras, (general) affine Lie algebras, and vertex algebras. Among the main results, we obtain a realization of trigonometric Lie algebras as what were called the covariant algebras of the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathcal{A}}$ of Lie algebra $\mathcal{A}=\frak{gl}_{\infty}\oplus\frak{gl}_{\infty}$ with respect to certain automorphism groups. We then prove that restricted modules of level $\ell$ for trigonometric Lie algebras naturally correspond to equivariant quasi modules for the affine vertex algebras $V_{\widehat{\…
We study relationships between spinor representations of certain Lie algebras and Lie superalgebras of differential operators on the circle and values of $ζ$--functions at the negative integers. By using formal calculus techniques we discuss the appearance of values of $ζ$--functions at the negative integers underlying the construction. In addition we provide a conceptual explanation of this phenomena through several different notions of normal ordering via vertex operator algebra theory. We also derive a general Jacobi--type identity generalizing our previous construction. At the end we discu…
In this paper we prove the fusion rules of $L(c_{1,q},0)$ for all $q\geq1$. Roughly speaking, we consider $L(c_{1,q},0)$ as the limitation of $L(c_{n,nq-1},0)$, where $n\rightarrow\infty$, and the fusion rules of $L(c_{1,q},0)$ follow as the limitation of the fusion rules of $L(c_{n,nq-1},0)$.
Using the Zhu algebra for a certain category of $\mathbb{C}$-graded vertex algebras $V$, we prove that if $V$ is finitely $Ω$-generated and satisfies suitable grading conditions, then $V$ is rational, i.e. has semi-simple representation theory, with one dimensional level zero Zhu algebra. Here $Ω$ denotes the vectors in $V$ that are annihilated by lowering the real part of the grading. We apply our result to the family of rank one Weyl vertex algebras with conformal element $ω_μ$ parameterized by $μ\in \mathbb{C}$, and prove that for certain non-integer values of $μ$, these vertex algebras, wh…
In this paper, we prove the categories of lower bounded twisted modules of positive integer levels for simple vertex operator algebras associated with affine Lie algebras and general automorphisms are semisimple, using the twisted generalization of Zhu's algebra for these vertex operator algebras, constructed in \cite{HY}. We also show that the category of lower bounded twisted modules for a general automorphism is equivalent to the category of lower bounded twisted modules for the corresponding diagram automorphism.
The Lie superalgebra SD of regular differential operators on the super circle has a universal central extension \hat{SD}. For each c\in C, the vacuum module M_c(\hat{SD}) of central charge c admits a vertex superalgebra structure, and M_c(\hat{SD}) \cong M_{-c}(\hat{SD}). The irreducible quotient V_c(\hat{SD}) of the vacuum module is known as the super W_{1+\infty} algebra. We show that for each integer n>0, V_n(\hat{SD}) has a minimal strong generating set consisting of 4n fields, and we identify it with a W-algebra associated to the purely odd simple root system of gl(n|n). Finally, we reali…
We construct the unique two-parameter vertex algebra which is freely generated of type ${\mathcal W}(2,4,6,\dots)$, and generated by the weights $2$ and $4$ fields. Subject to some mild constraints, all vertex algebras of type ${\mathcal W}(2,4,\dots, 2N)$ for some $N$, can be obtained as quotients of this universal algebra. This includes the $B$ and $C$ type principal ${\mathcal W}$-algebras, the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-orbifolds of the $D$ type principal ${\mathcal W}$-algebras, and many others which arise as cosets of affine vertex algebras inside larger structures. As an application, we classify al…
We introduce a cohomology theory of grading-restricted vertex algebras. To construct the {\it correct} cohomologies, we consider linear maps from tensor powers of a grading-restricted vertex algebra to "rational functions valued in the algebraic completion of a module for the algebra," instead of linear maps from tensor powers of the algebra to a module for the algebra. One subtle complication arising from such functions is that we have to carefully address the issue of convergence when we compose these linear maps with vertex operators. In particular, for each $n\in \mathbb{N}$, we have an in…
We announce a new type of "Jacobi identity" for vertex operator algebras, incorporating values of the Riemann zeta function at negative integers. Using this we "explain" and generalize some recent work of S. Bloch's relating values of the zeta function with the commutators of certain operators and Lie algebras of differential operators.
We give a general criterion for conformal embeddings of vertex operator algebras associated to affine Lie algebras at arbitrary levels. Using that criterion, we construct new conformal embeddings at admissible rational and negative integer levels. In particular, we construct all remaining conformal embeddings associated to automorphisms of Dynkin diagrams of simple Lie algebras. The semisimplicity of the corresponding decompositions is obtained by using the concept of fusion rules for vertex operator algebras.
We explain how to use a certain new "Jacobi identity" for vertex operator algebras, announced in a previous paper (math.QA/9909178), to interpret and generalize recent work of S. Bloch's relating values of the Riemann zeta function at negative integers with a certain Lie algebra of operators.
