We study a double cover $ψ:X\to V\subset\mathbb{P}^{n}$ branched over a smooth divisor $R\subset V$ such that $R$ is cut on $V$ by a hypersurface of degree $2(n-\mathrm{deg}(V))$, where $n\geqslant 8$ and $V$ is a smooth hypersurface of degree 3 or 4. We prove that $X$ is nonrational and birationally superrigid.
In this paper, we develop a new method to classify abelian automorphism groups of hypersurfaces. We use this method to classify (Theorem 4.2) abelian groups that admit a liftable action on a smooth cubic fourfold. A parallel result (Theorem 5.1) is obtained for quartic surfaces.
We construct families of quartic and cubic hypersurfaces through a canonical curve, which are parametrized by an open subset in a Grassmannian and a Flag variety respectively. Using G. Kempf's cohomological obstruction theory, we show that these families cut out the canonical curve and that the quartics are birational (via a blowing-up of a linear subspace) to quadric bundles over the projective plane, whose Steinerian curve equals the canonical curve.
A polynomial transformation of the real plane $\Bbb R^2$ is a mapping $\Bbb R^2\to\Bbb R^2$ given by two polynomials of two variables. Such a transformation is called cubic if the degrees of its polynomials are not greater than three. It turns out that cubic transformations are associated with some binary and quaternary quartic forms. In the present paper these forms are defined and studied.
We study certain moduli spaces of stable vector bundles of rank two on cubic and quartic threefolds. In many cases under consideration, it turns out that the moduli space is complete and irreducible and a general member has vanishing intermediate cohomology. In one case, all except one component of the moduli space has such vector bundles.
We shall show the existence of 15 automorphic forms of weight 8 on the moduli space of marked Hessian quartic surfaces of cubic surfaces. These automorphic forms can be interpreted in terms of the coefficients of the Sylvester form of a general cubic surface.
For the general monic cubic and quartic with real coefficients, polynomial conditions on the coefficients are derived as directly and as simply as possible from the Sturm sequence that will determine the real and complex root multiplicities together with the order of the real roots with respect to multiplicity.
In 1899, Hutchinson presented a way to obtain a three-parameter family of Hessians of cubic surfaces as blowups of Kummer surfaces. We show that this family consists of those Hessians containing an extra class of conic curves. Based on this, we find the invariant of a cubic surface C in pentahedral form that vanishes if its Hessian is in Hutchinson's family, and we give an explicit map between cubic surfaces in pentahedral form and blowups of Kummer surfaces.
We give a bijection between binary quartic forms and quartic rings with a monogenic cubic resolvent ring, relating the rings associated to binary quartic forms with Bhargava's cubic resolvent rings. This gives a parametrization of quartic rings with monogenic cubic resolvents. We also give a geometric interpretation of this parametrization.
We study the rationality problem for nodal quartic double solids. In particular, we prove that nodal quartic double solids with at most six singular points are irrational, and nodal quartic double solids with at least eleven singular points are rational.
We study the mixed Hodge structure on the third homology group of a threefold which is the double cover of projective three-space ramified over a quartic surface with a double conic. We deal with the Torelli problem for such threefolds.
The aim of this short note is to give a simple proof of the non-rationality of the double cover of the three-dimensional projective space branched over a sufficiently general quartic.
For each $n \geq 3$ the authors provide an $n$-dimensional rigid compact complex manifold of Kodaira dimension $1$. First they construct a series of singular quotients of products of $(n-1)$ Fermat curves with the Klein quartic, which are rigid. Then using toric geometry a suitable resolution of singularities is constructed and the deformation theories of the singular model and of the resolutions are compared, showing the rigidity of the resolutions.
In this paper we investigate the divisor $\mathcal C_{14}$ inside the moduli space of smooth cubic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb P^5$, whose generic element is a smooth cubic containing a smooth quartic scroll. Using the fact that all degenerations of quartic scrolls in $\mathbb P^5$ contained in a smooth cubic hypersurface are surfaces with one apparent double point, we conclude that every cubic hypersurface belonging to $\mathcal C_{14}$ is rational. As an application of our results and of the construction of some explicit examples contained in the Appendix, we also prove that the Pfaffian locus…
We prove that the dimension of a quartic symmetroid singular along a quadric of codimension 1 is at most 4, if it is not a cone. In the maximal case, the quadric is reducible and consists of rank-3-points. If the quadric is irreducible, it consists of rank-2-points and the symmetroid is at most 3-dimensional.
This article focuses on the study of toric algebraic statistical models which correspond to toric Del Pezzo surfaces with Du Val singularities. A closed-form for the Maximum Likelihood Estimate of algebraic statistical models which correspond to cubic and quartic toric Del Pezzo surfaces with Du Val singular points is given. Also, we calculate the ML degrees of some toric Del Pezzo surfaces of degree less than or equal to six, which equals the degree of the surface in all the case but one, namely the quintic with two points of type $\mathbb{A}_1$.
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ denote the finite field with $q$ elements. In this work, we use characters to give the number of rational points on suitable curves of low degree over $\mathbb{F}_q$ in terms of the number of rational points on elliptic curves. In the case where $q$ is a prime number, we give a way to calculate these numbers. As a consequence of these results, we characterize maximal and minimal curves given by equations of the forms $ax^3+by^3+cz^3=0$ and $ax^4+by^4+cz^4=0$.
Three-dimensional del Pezzo varieties of degree 2 are double covers of projective space $\mathbb{P}^{3}$ branced in a quadric. In this paper we prove that if a del Pezzo variety of degree 2 has exactly 15 nodes then the corresponding quadric is a hyperplane section of the Igusa quartic or, equivalently, all such del Pezzo varieties are members of one particular linear system on the Coble fourfold. Their automorphism groups are induced from the automorphism group of Coble fourfold. Also we classify all $G$-birationally rigid varieties of such type.
We consider the class of singular double coverings $X \to \PP^3$ ramified in the degeneration locus $D$ of a family of 2-dimensional quadrics. These are precisely the quartic double solids constructed by Artin and Mumford as examples of unirational but nonrational conic bundles. With such quartic surface $D$ one can associate an Enriques surface $S$ which is the factor of the blowup of $D$ by a natural involution acting without fixed points (such Enriques surfaces are known as nodal Enriques surfaces or Reye congruences). We show that the nontrivial part of the derived category of coherent she…

The Segre cubic and Castelnuovo-Richmond quartic are two projectively dual hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^4$, with a long and rich history starting in the 19th century. We will explain how Kuznetsov's theory of homological projective duality lifts this projective duality to a relationship between the derived category of a small resolution of the Segre cubic and a small resolution of the Coble fourfold, the double cover of $\mathbb{P}^4$ ramified along the Castelnuovo-Richmond quartic. Homological projective duality then provides a description of the derived categories of linear sections, which w…
The characteristic numbers of smooth plane quartics are computed using intersection theory on a component of the moduli space of stable maps. This completes the verification of Zeuthen's prediction of characteristic numbers of smooth plane curves. A short sketch of a computation of the characteristic numbers of plane cubics is also given as an illustration.
We study quartic double fivefolds from the perspective of Fano manifolds of Calabi-Yau type and that of exceptional quaternionic representations. We first prove that the generic quartic double fivefold can be represented, in a finite number of ways, as a double cover of P^5 ramified along a linear section of the Sp 12-invariant quartic in P^31. Then, using the geometry of the Vinberg's type II decomposition of some exceptional quaternionic representations, and backed by some cohomological computations performed by Macaulay2, we prove the existence of a spherical rank 6 vector bundle on such a …
The Abel-Jacobi maps of the families of elliptic quintics and rational quartics lying on a smooth cubic threefold are studied. It is proved that their generic fiber is the 5-dimensional projective space for quintics, and a smooth 3-dimensional variety birational to the cubic itself for quartics. The paper is a continuation of the recent work of Markushevich-Tikhomirov, who showed that the first Abel-Jacobi map factors through the moduli component of stable rank 2 vector bundles on the cubic threefold with Chern numbers $c_1=0, c_2=2$ obtained by Serre's construction from elliptic quintics, and…
The Hessian of a general cubic surface is a nodal quartic surface, hence its desingularisation is a K3 surface. We determine the transcendental lattice of the Hessian K3 surface for various cubic surfaces (with nodes and/or Eckardt points for example). Classical invariant theory shows that the moduli space of cubic surfaces is a weighted projective space. We describe the singular locus and some other subvarieties of the moduli space.
It is shown that a smooth global deformation of quartic double solids, i.e. double covers of $\mathbb P^3$ branched along smooth quartics, is again a quartic double solid without assuming the projectivity of the global deformation. The analogous result for smooth intersections of two quadrics in $\mathbb P^ 5$ is also shown, which is, however, much easier. In a weak form this extends results of J. Kollár and I. Nakamura on Moishezon manifolds that are homeomorphic to certain Fano threefolds and it gives some further evidence for the question whether global deformations of Fano manifolds of Pic…
Let ${\mathcal Q}_n^d$ be the vector space of forms of degree $d\ge 3$ on ${\mathbb C}^n$, with $n\ge 2$. The object of our study is the map $Φ$, introduced in papers [EI], [AI1], that assigns every nondegenerate form in ${\mathcal Q}_n^d$ the so-called associated form, which is an element of ${\mathcal Q}_n^{n(d-2)*}$. We focus on two cases: those of binary quartics ($n=2$, $d=4$) and ternary cubics ($n=3$, $d=3$). In these situations the map $Φ$ induces a rational equivariant involution on the projectivized space ${\mathbb P}({\mathcal Q}_n^d)$, which is in fact the only nontrivial rational …
The hypersurface of Luroth quartic curves inside the projective space of plane quartics has degree 54. We give a proof of this fact along the lines outlined in a paper by Morley, published in 1919. Another proof has been given by Le Potier and Tikhomirov in 2001, in the setting of moduli spaces of vector bundles on the projective plane. Morley's proof uses the description of plane quartics as branch curves of Geiser involutions and gives new geometrical interpretations of the 36 planes associated to the Cremona hexahedral representations of a nonsingular cubic surface.
Let M(2;0,3) be the moduli space of rank-2 stable vector bundles with Chern classes c_1=0, c_2=3 on the Fano threefold X, the double solid of index two. We prove that the vector bundles obtained by Serre's construction from smooth elliptic quintic curves on X form an open part of an irreducible component M' of M(2;0,3) and that the Abel-Jacobi map F:M'-->J(X) into the intermediate Jacobian J(X) defined by the second Chern class is generically finite of degree 84 onto a translate of the theta divisor. We also prove that the family of elliptic quintics on a general X is irreducible and of dimens…
We prove the relation between the Hodge structure of the double cover of a nonsingular cubic surface branched along its Hessian and the Hodge structure of the triple cover of the ambient projective space branched along the cubic surface. And we introduce a method to study the infinitesimal variations of Hodge structure of the double cover of the cubic surface. Using these results, we compute the Néron-Severi lattices for the double cover of a generic cubic surface and the Fermat cubic surface.
We classify all possible automorphism groups of smooth cubic surfaces over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. As an intermediate step we also classify automorphism groups of quartic del Pezzo surfaces. We show that the moduli space of smooth cubic surfaces is rational in every characteristic, determine the dimensions of the strata admitting each possible isomorphism class of automorphism group, and find explicit normal forms in each case. Finally, we completely characterize when a smooth cubic surface in positive characteristic, together with a group action, can be lift…
We use the cut and paste relation $[Y^{[2]}] = [Y][\mathbb{P}^m] + \mathbb{L}^2 [F(Y)]$ in $K_0(\text{Var}_k)$ of Galkin--Shinder for cubic hypersurfaces arising from projective geometry to characterize cubic hypersurfaces of sufficiently high dimension under certain numerical or genericity conditions. Removing the conditions involving the middle Betti number from the numerical conditions used extends the possible $Y$ to cubic hypersurfaces, complete intersections of two quadric hypersurfaces, or complete intersections of two quartic hypersurfaces. The same method also gives a family of other …
We study the discriminant of a degree 4 extension given by a deformed bidouble cover, i.e., by equations z^2= u + a w, w^2= v + bz. We first show that the discriminant surface is a quartic which is cuspidal on a twisted cubic, i.e.,is the discriminant of the general equation of degree 3. We then take a(u,v), b(u,v) and get a 3-cuspidal affine quartic curve whose braid monodromy we compute. This calculation of the local braid monodromy is a step towards the determination of global braid monodromies, e.g. for the (a,b,c) surfaces previously considered by the authors. In the revision we fill a ga…
For a smooth plane cubic $B$, we count curves $C$ of degree $d$ such that the normalizations of $C\backslash B$ are isomorphic to $\Bbb A^1$, for $d\leq7$ (for $d=7$ under some assumption). We also count plane rational quartic curves intersecting $B$ at only one point.
Let $X_4\subset\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ be a quartic hypersurface of dimension $n\geq 4$ over an infinite field $k$. We show that if either $X_4$ contains a linear subspace $Λ$ of dimension $h\geq \max\{2,\dim(Λ\cap \text{Sing}(X_4))-2\}$ or has double points along a linear subspace of dimension $h\geq 3$, a smooth $k$-rational point and is otherwise general, then $X_4$ is unirational over $k$. This improves previous results by A. Predonzan and J. Harris, B. Mazur, R. Pandharipande for quartics. We also provide a density result for the $k$-rational points of quartic $3$-folds with a double plane over…
Recent work of Kass--Wickelgren gives an enriched count of the $27$ lines on a smooth cubic surface over arbitrary fields. Their approach using $\mathbb{A}^1$-enumerative geometry suggests that other classical enumerative problems should have similar enrichments, when the answer is computed as the degree of the Euler class of a relatively orientable vector bundle. Here, we consider the closely related problem of the $28$ bitangents to a smooth plane quartic. However, it turns out the relevant vector bundle is not relatively orientable and new ideas are needed to produce enriched counts. We int…
