Let k be an algebraically closed field, let R be an associative k-algebra, and let F = {M_a: a in I} be a family of orthogonal points in R-Mod such that End_R(M_a) = k for all a in I. Then Mod(F), the minimal full sub-category of R-Mod which contains F and is closed under extensions, is a full exact Abelian subcategory of R-Mod and a length category in the sense of Gabriel.
In this paper, we use iterated extensions to relate the length category Mod(F) to noncommutative deformations of modules, and use some new methods to study Mod(F) via iterated extensions. In particular, we give a new proof of the characterization of uniserial length categories, which is constructive. As an application, we give an explicit description of some categories of holonomic and regular holonomic D-modules on curves which are uniserial length categories.
In this paper, we study length categories using iterated extensions. We consider the problem of classifying all indecomposable objects in a length category, and the problem of characterizing those length categories that are uniserial. We solve the last problem, and obtain a necessary and sufficient criterion for uniseriality under weak assumptions. This criterion turns out to be known by Amdal and Ringdal already in 1968; we give a new proof that is both elementary and constructive. The first problem is the most fundamental one, and its general solution is "the main and perhaps hopeless purpos…
Recollements of triangulated categories may be seen as exact sequences of such categories. Iterated recollements of triangulated categories are analogues of geometric or topological stratifications and of composition series of algebraic objects. We discuss the question of uniqueness of such a stratification, up to ordering and derived equivalence, for derived module categories. The main result is a positive answer in the form of a Jordan Hölder theorem for derived module categories of hereditary artin algebras. We also provide examples of derived simple rings.
We prove that some subquotient categories of one-sided triangulated categories are abelian. This unifies a result by Iyama-Yoshino in the case of triangulated categories and a result by Demonet-Liu in the case of exact categories.
A Jordan Hölder theorem is established for derived module categories of piecewise hereditary algebras. The resulting composition series of derived categories are shown to be independent of the choice of bounded or unbounded derived module categories, and also of the choice of finitely generated or arbitrary modules.
We classify integrable irreducible $\hat{g}[σ]$-modules in categories E and C, where E is proved to contain the well known evaluation modules and C to unify highest weight modules, evaluation modules and their tensor product modules.
Let $H$ be a Hopf algebra. We consider $H$-equivariant modules over a Hopf module category $\mathcal C$ as modules over the smash extension $\mathcal C\# H$. We construct Grothendieck spectral sequences for the cohomologies as well as the $H$-locally finite cohomologies of these objects. We also introduce relative $(\mathcal D,H)$-Hopf modules over a Hopf comodule category $\mathcal D$. These generalize relative $(A,H)$-Hopf modules over an $H$-comodule algebra $A$. We construct Grothendieck spectral sequences for their cohomologies by using their rational $Hom$ objects and higher derived func…
In this paper, by using functor rings and functor categories, we study finiteness and purity of subcategories of the module categories. We give a characterisation of contravariantly finite resolving subcategories of the module category of finite representation type in terms of their functor rings. We also characterize contravariantly finite resolving subcategories of the module category $Λ${\rm -mod} that contain the Jacobson radical of $Λ$ of finite type, by their functor categories. We study the pure semisimplicity conjecture for a locally finitely presented category ${\underrightarrow{\lim}…
We establish a correspondence between recollements of abelian categories up to equivalence and certain TTF-triples. For a module category we show, moreover, a correspondence with idempotent ideals, recovering a theorem of Jans. Furthermore, we show that a recollement whose terms are module categories is equivalent to one induced by an idempotent element, thus answering a question by Kuhn.
A finite directed category is a $k$-linear category with finitely many objects and an underlying poset structure, where $k$ is an algebraically closed field. This concept unifies structures such as $k$-linerizations of posets and finite EI categories, quotient algebras of finite-dimensional hereditary algebras, triangular matrix algebras, etc. In this paper we study representations of finite directed categories, discuss their stratification properties, and show the existence of generalized APR tilting modules for triangular matrix algebras under some assumptions.
A TTF-triple $(\mathcal{C},\mathcal{T},\mathcal{F})$ in an abelian category is called 'one-sided split' in case either $(\mathcal{C},\mathcal{T})$ or $(\mathcal{T},\mathcal{F})$ is a split torsion theory. In this paper we classify one-sided split TTF-triples in module categories, thus completing Jans' classification of two-sided split TTF-triples and answering a question that has remained open for almost forty years.
We prove that a certain eventually homological isomorphism between module categories induces a triangle equivalence between their singularity categories, Gorenstein defect categories and the stable categories of Gorenstein projective modules. Further, we show that Auslander-Reiten conjecture and Gorenstein symmetry conjecture can be reduced by eventually homological isomorphisms. Applying the results to arrow removal and vertex removal, we describe the Gorenstein projective modules over some non-monomial algebras, and we verify the Auslander-Reiten conjecture for certain algebras.
In this survey, we first present basic facts on A-infinity algebras and modules including their use in describing triangulated categories. Then we describe the Quillen model approach to A-infinity structures following K. Lefevre's thesis. Finally, starting from an idea of V. Lyubashenko's, we give a conceptual construction of A-infinity functor categories using a suitable closed monoidal category of cocategories. In particular, this yields a natural construction of the bialgebra structure on the bar construction of the Hochschild complex of an associative algebra.
This note describes an application of the theory of generalised Burnside rings to algebraic representation theory. Tables of marks are given explicitly for the groups $S_4$ and $S_5$ which are of particular interest in the context of reductive algebraic groups. As an application, the base sets for the nilpotent element $F_4 (a_3)$ are computed.
In this paper, we use basic formal variable techniques to study certain categories of modules for the toroidal Lie algebra $τ$. More specifically, we define and study two categories $\mathcal{E}_τ$ and $\mathcal{C}_τ$ of $τ$-modules using generating functions, where $\mathcal{E}_τ$ is proved to contain the evaluation modules while $\mathcal{C}_τ$ contains certain restricted $τ$-modules, the evaluation modules, and their tensor product modules. Furthermore, we classify the irreducible integrable modules in categories $\mathcal{E}_τ$ and $\mathcal{C}_τ$.
For any ring R we construct two triangulated categories, each admitting a functor from R-modules that sends projective and injective modules to 0. When R is a quasi-Frobenius or Gorenstein ring, these triangulated categories agree with each other and with the usual stable module category. Our stable module categories are homotopy categories of Quillen model structures on the category of R-modules. These model categories involve generalizations of Gorenstein projective and injective modules that we derive by replacing finitely presented modules by modules of type FP-infinity. Along the way, we …
We classify all triangulated orbit categories of path-algebras of Dynkin diagrams that are triangle equivalent to a stable module category of a representation-finite self-injective standard algebra. For each triangulated orbit category T we give an explicit description of a representation-finite self-injective standard algebra with stable module category triangle equivalent to T.
In this article, we generalize the concept of torsion pairs and study its structure. As a trial of obtaining all torsion pairs, we decompose torsion pairs by projective modules and injective modules. Then we calculate torsion pairs on the algebra KAn and tub categories. At last we try to find all torsion pairs on the module categories of finite dimensional hereditary algebras.
We describe the structure of module categories of finite dimensional algebras over an algebraically closed field for which the cycles of nonzero nonisomorphisms between indecomposable finite dimensional modules are finite (do not belong to the infinite Jacobson radical of the module category). Moreover, geometric and homological properties of these module categories are exhibited.
We prove that the categories of Gelfand-Zeitlin modules of $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{gl}_n$ and Whittaker modules associated with a semi-simple complex finite-dimensional algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ are extension full in the category of all $\mathfrak{g}$-modules. This is used to estimate and in some cases determine the global dimension of blocks of the categories of Gelfand-Zeitlin and Whittaker modules.
We show that the stable module categories of certain selfinjective algebras of finite representation type having tree class A_n, D_n, E_6, E_7 or E_8 are triangulated equivalent to u-cluster categories of the corresponding Dynkin type. The proof relies on the 'Morita' theorem for u-cluster categories by Keller and Reiten, along with the recent computation of Calabi-Yau dimensions of stable module categories by Dugas.
Let $X$ be a variety with an action by an algebraic group $G$. In this paper we discuss various properties of $G$-equivariant $D$-modules on $X$, such as the decompositions of their global sections as representations of $G$ (when $G$ is reductive), and descriptions of the categories that they form. When $G$ acts on $X$ with finitely many orbits, the category of equivariant $D$-modules is isomorphic to the category of finite-dimensional representations of a finite quiver with relations. We describe explicitly these categories for irreducible $G$-modules $X$ that are spherical varieties, and sho…
Following analogous constructions for Lie algebras, we define Whittaker modules and Whittaker categories for finite-dimensional simple Lie superalgebras. Results include a decomposition of Whittaker categories for a Lie superalgebra according to the action of an appropriate sub-superalgebra; and, for basic classical Lie superalgebras of type I, a description of the strongly typical simple Whittaker modules.
We study IE-closed subcategories of a module category, subcategories which are closed under taking Images and Extensions. We investigate the relation between IE-closed subcategories and torsion pairs, and characterize $τ$-tilting finite algebras using IE-closed subcategories. For the hereditary case, we show that IE-closed subcategories can be classified by twin rigid modules, pairs of rigid modules satisfying some homological conditions. Moreover, we introduce mutation of twin rigid modules analogously to tilting modules, which gives a way to calculate all twin rigid modules for the represent…
It is a result of Gabriel that hereditary torsion pairs in categories of modules are in bijection with certain filters of ideals of the base ring, called Gabriel filters or Gabriel topologies. A result of Jans shows that this bijection restricts to a correspondence between (Gabriel filters that are uniquely determined by) idempotent ideals and TTF triples. Over the years, these classical results have been extended in several different directions. In this paper we present a detailed and self-contained exposition of an extension of the above bijective correspondences to additive functor categori…
The category of modules over the endomorphism algebra of a rigid object in a Hom-finite triangulated category C has been given two different descriptions: On the one hand, as shown by Osamu Iyama and Yuji Yoshino, it is equivalent to an ideal quotient of a subcategory of C. On the other hand, Aslak Buan and Robert Marsh proved that this module category is also equivalent to some localisation of C. In this paper, we give a conceptual interpretation, inspired from homotopical algebra, of this double description. Our main aim, yet to be acheived, is to generalise Buan-Marsh's result to the case o…
Let $H$ be a finite dimensional hereditary algebra over an algebraically closed field, and let $\mathcal{C}_{H}$ be the corresponding cluster category. We give a description of the (standard) fundamental domain of $\mathcal{C}_{H} $ in the bounded derived category $\mathcal{D}^{b}(H)$, and of the cluster-tilting objects, in terms of the category $\modΓ$\ of finitely generated modules over a suitable tilted algebra $% Γ.$ Furthermore, we apply this description to obtain (the quiver of) an arbitrary cluster-tilted algebra.
We propose a theory of degenerations for derived module categories, analogous to degenerations in module varieties for module categories. In particular we define two types of degenerations, one algebraic and the other geometric. We show that these are equivalent, analogously to the Riemann-Zwara theorem for module varieties. Applications to tilting complexes are given, in particular that any two-term tilting complex is determined by its graded module structure.
Simple-minded systems in stable module categories are defined by orthogonality and generating properties so that the images of the simple modules under a stable equivalence form such a system. Simple-minded systems are shown to be invariant under stable equivalences; thus the set of all simple-minded systems is an invariant of a stable module category. The simple-minded systems of several classes of algebras are described and connections to the Auslander-Reiten conjecture are pointed out.
We give a result of Auslander-Ringel-Tachikawa type for Gorenstein-projective modules over a complete Gorenstein order. In particular, we prove that a complete Gorenstein order is of finite Cohen-Macaulay representation type if and only if every indecomposable pure-injective object in the stable category of Gorenstein-projective modules is compact.
We prove that some subquotient categories of exact categories are abelian. This generalizes a result by Koenig-Zhu in the case of (algebraic) triangulated categories. As a particular case, if an exact category B with enough projectives and injectives has a cluster tilting subcategory M, then B/M is abelian. More precisely, it is equivalent to the category of finitely presented modules over the stable category of M.
This survey article is intended as an introduction to the recent categorical classification theorems of the three authors, restricting to the special case of the category of modules for a finite group.
We show that the category of finite-dimensional modules over the endomorphism algebra of a rigid object in a Hom-finite triangulated category is equivalent to the Gabriel-Zisman localisation of the category with respect to a certain class of maps. This generalises the 2-Calabi-Yau tilting theorem of Keller-Reiten, in which the module category is obtained as a factor category, to the rigid case.
We study the homotopy category $ K(\Inj A)$ of all injective modules over a finite dimensional algebra $A$ with discrete derived category. We give a classification of the indecomposable objects of $ K(\Inj A)$ for any radical square zero self-injective algebra $A$. In particular, every indecomposable object is endofinite.
We develop the theory dg algebras with enough idempotents and their dg modules and show their equivalence with that of small dg categories and their dg modules. We introduce the concept of dg adjunction and show that the classical covariant tensor-Hom and contravariant Hom-Hom adjunctions of modules over associative unital algebras are extended as dg adjunctions between categories of dg bimodules. The corresponding adjunctions of the associated triangulated functors are studied, and we investigate when they are one-sided parts of bifunctors which are triangulated on both variables. We finally …
This paper builds on earlier work, where the authors described Whittaker modules for the Virasoro algebra. Using a framework of Batra and Mazorchuk, the current paper investigates a category of Virasoro algebra modules that includes Whittaker modules. Results in this paper include a classification of the simple modules in the category and a description of certain induced modules that are a natural generalization of simple Whittaker modules.
We study distances on zigzag persistence modules from the viewpoint of derived categories and Auslander--Reiten quivers. The derived category of ordinary persistence modules is derived equivalent to that of arbitrary zigzag persistence modules, depending on a classical tilting module. Through this derived equivalence, we define and compute distances on the derived category of arbitrary zigzag persistence modules and prove an algebraic stability theorem. We also compare our distance with the distance for purely zigzag persistence modules introduced by Botnan--Lesnick and the sheaf-theoretic con…
Auslander and Bridger introduced the notions of n-spherical modules and n-torsionfree modules. In this paper, we construct an equivalence between the stable category of n-spherical modules and the category of modules of grade at least n, and provide its Gorenstein analogue. As an application, we prove that if R is a Gorenstein local ring of Krull dimension d>0, then there exists a stable equivalence between the category of (d-1)-torsionfree R-modules and the category of d-spherical modules relative to the local cohomology functor.
We examine various triangulated quotients of the module category of a finite group. We demonstrate that these are not compactly generated by the simple modules and present a modification of Rickard's Idempotent Module construction that accounts for this. When the localizing subcategories are sufficiently nice we give an explicit description of the objects in the Bousfield triangles for modules that are direct limits of sequences of finite dimensional modules in terms of homotopy colimits.
We prove in full generality that the generalized quantum affine Schur-Weyl duality functor, introduced by Kang-Kashiwara-Kim, gives an equivalence between the category of finite-dimensional modules over a quiver Hecke algebra and a certain full subcategory of finite-dimensional modules over a quantum affine algebra which is a generalization of the Hernandez-Leclerc's category $\mathcal{C}_Q$. This was previously proved in untwisted $ADE$ types by Fujita using the geometry of quiver varieties, which is not applicable in general. Our proof is purely algebraic, and so can be extended uniformly to…
We introduce the notion of mutation of $n$-cluster tilting subcategories in a triangulated category with Auslander-Reiten-Serre duality. Using this idea, we are able to obtain the complete classifications of rigid Cohen-Macaulay modules over certain Veronese subrings.
This article investigates duals for bimodule categories over finite tensor categories. We show that finite bimodule categories form a tricategory and discuss the dualities in this tricategory using inner homs. We consider inner-product bimodule categories over pivotal tensor categories with additional structure on the inner homs. Inner-product module categories are related to Frobenius algebras and lead to the notion of $*$-Morita equivalence for pivotal tensor categories. We show that inner-product bimodule categories form a tricategory with two duality operations and an additional pivotal st…
Given a weight-one element $u$ of a vertex operator algebra $V$, we construct an automorphism of the category of generalized $g$-twisted modules for automorphisms $g$ of $V$ fixing $u$. We apply this construction to the case that $V$ is an affine vertex operator algebra to obtain explicit results on these automorphisms of categories. In particular, we give explicit constructions of certain generalized twisted modules from generalized twisted modules associated to diagram automorphisms of finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras and generalized (untwisted) modules.
The goal of this paper is to compute the supports of simple modules in the categories $\mathcal{O}$ for the rational Cherednik algebras associated to groups $G(\ell,1,n)$. For this we compute some combinatorial maps on the set of simples: wall-crossing bijections and a certain $\mathfrak{sl}_\infty$-crystal associated to a Heisenberg algebra action on a Fock space.
We show that the quotient of a Hom-finite triangulated category C by the kernel of the functor Hom(T, -), where T is a rigid object, is preabelian. We further show that the class of regular morphisms in the quotient admit a calculus of left and right fractions. It follows that the Gabriel-Zisman localisation of the quotient at the class of regular morphisms is abelian. We show that it is equivalent to the category of finite dimensional modules over the endomorphism algebra of T in C.
This work clarifies the relationship between the openness of the regular locus of a commutative Noetherian ring R and the existence of generators for the category of finitely generated R-modules, the corresponding bounded derived category, and for the singularity category of R.
The categorical formulation of the Eilenberg-Watts calculus relates, for any pair of finite categories M and N, the finite categories Fun^{le}(N,M) and Fun^{re}(N,M) of linear left or right exact functors and the Deligne product \bar N \boxtimes M by adjoint equivalences. We establish a variant of this calculus for the case that the finite categories M and N are module categories over a finite tensor category. This provides in particular canonical and explicitly computable equivalences between categories of left or right exact module functors (or, more generally, balanced functors) and certain…
Huang, Lepowsky and Zhang have developed a module theory for vertex operator algebras that endows suitably chosen module categories with the structure of braided monoidal categories. Included in the theory is a functor which assigns to discretely strongly graded modules a contragredient module, obtained as a gradewise dual. In this paper, we show that this gradewise dual endows the module category with the structure of a ribbon Grothendieck-Verdier category. This duality structure is more general than that of a rigid monoidal category; in contrast to rigidity, it naturally accommodates the fac…
