We propose a theory of degenerations for derived module categories, analogous to degenerations in module varieties for module categories. In particular we define two types of degenerations, one algebraic and the other geometric. We show that these are equivalent, analogously to the Riemann-Zwara theorem for module varieties. Applications to tilting complexes are given, in particular that any two-term tilting complex is determined by its graded module structure.
We generalise Yoshino's definition of a degeneration of two Cohen Macaulay modules to a definition of degeneration between two objects in a triangulated category. We derive some natural properties for the triangulated category and the degeneration under which the Yoshino-style degeneration is equivalent to the degeneration defined by a specific distinguished triangle analogous to Zwara's characterisation of degeneration in module varieties.
In previous work, based on work of Zwara and Yoshino, we defined and studied degenerations of objects in triangulated categories analogous to degeneration of modules. In triangulated categories it is surprising that the zero object may degenerate. We study this systematically. In particular we show that the degeneration of the zero object actually induces all other degenerations by homotopy pullback, that degeneration of $0$ is closely linked, but not equivalent, to having zero image in the Grothendieck group.
This work reports on joint research with Manuel Saorin. For an algebra A over an algebraically closed field k the set of A-module structures on k d forms an affine algebraic variety. The general linear group Gl d (k) acts on this variety and isomorphism classes correspond to orbits under this action. A module M degenerates to a module N if N belongs to the Zariski closure of the orbit of M. Yoshino gave a scheme-theoretic characterisation, and Saorin and Zimmermann generalise this concept to general triangulated categories. We show that this concept has an interpretation in terms of distinguis…
Module structures of an algebra on a fixed finite dimensional vector space form an algebraic variety. Isomorphism classes correspond to orbits of the action of an algebraic group on this variety and a module is a degeneration of another if it belongs to the Zariski closure of the orbit. Riedtmann and Zwara gave an algebraic characterisation of this concept in terms of the existence of short exact sequences. Jensen, Su and Zimmermann, as well as independently Yoshino, studied the natural generalisation of the Riedtmann-Zwara degeneration to triangulated categories. The definition has an intrins…
In this paper we use A-infinity modules to study the derived category of a finite dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field. We study varieties parameterising A-infinity modules. These varieties carry an action of an algebraic group such that orbits correspond to quasi-isomorphism classes of complexes in the derived category. We describe orbit closures in these varieties, generalising a result of Zwara and Riedtmann for modules.
We prove that every finite dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field is either derived tame or derived wild. The proof is based on the technique of matrix problems (boxes and reduction algorithm). It implies, in particular, that any degeneration of a derived wild algebra is derived wild; respectively, any deformation of a derived tame algebra is derived tame.
We prove that the number of parameters defining a complex of projective modules over a finite dimensional algebra is upper semi-continuous in families of algebras. Supposing that every algebra is either derived tame or derived wild, we get that a degeneration of a derived wild algebra is derived wild too. We also explain why the so-called counter-example of Bruestle is in fact not a counter-example.
In this article we describe indecomposable objects of the derived categories of a branch class of associative algebras. To this class belong such known classes of algebras as gentle algebras, skew-gentle algebras and certain degenerations of tubular algebras.
In this paper, we introduce generalized quiver varieties which include as special cases classical and cyclic quiver varieties. The geometry of generalized quiver varieties is governed by a finitely generated algebra P: the algebra P is self-injective if the quiver Q is of Dynkin type, and coincides with the preprojective algebra in the case of classical quiver varieties. We show that in the Dynkin case the strata of generalized quiver varieties are in bijection with the isomorphism classes of objects in proj P, and that their degeneration order coincides with the Jensen-Su-Zimmermann's degener…
We show that for the path algebra $A$ of an acyclic quiver, the singularity category of the derived category $\mathsf{D}^{\rm b}(\mathsf{mod}\,A)$ is triangle equivalent to the derived category of the functor category of $\underline{\mathsf{mod}}\,A$, that is, $\mathsf{D}_{\rm sg}(\mathsf{D}^{\rm b}(\mathsf{mod}\,A))\simeq \mathsf{D}^{\rm b}(\mathsf{mod}(\underline{\mathsf{mod}}\,A))$. This extends a result of Iyama-Oppermann for the path algebra $A$ of a Dynkin quiver. An important step is to establish a functor category analog of Happel's triangle equivalence for repetitive algebras.
We determine the derived representation types of algebras with radical square zero and give a description of the indecomposable objects in their bounded derived categories.
We give a characterization of the sets of objects of the derived category of a block of a finite group algebra (or other symmetric algebra) that occur as the set of images of simple modules under an equivalence of derived categories. We give some applications to proving that certain blocks have equivalent derived categories.
The paper is devoted to study some of the questions arises naturally in connection to the notion of relative derived categories. In particular, we study invariants of recollements involving relative derived categories, generalise two results of Happel by proving the existence of AR-triangles in Gorenstein derived categories, provide situations for which relative derived categories with respect to Gorenstein projective and Gorenstein injective modules are equivalent and finally study relations between the Gorenstein derived category of a quiver and its image under a reflection functor. Some int…
We study composition series of derived module categories in the sense of Angeleri Hügel, König & Liu for quasi-hereditary algebras. More precisely, we show that having a composition series with all factors being derived categories of vector spaces does not characterise derived categories of quasi-hereditay algebras. This gives a negative answer to a question of Liu & Yang and the proof also confirms part of a conjecture of Bobiński & Malicki. In another direction, we show that derived categories of quasi-hereditary algebras can have composition series with lots of different lengths and composi…
We study generic objects in triangulated categories and characterize the finite dimensional algebras $A$ such that the derived categories $D(\Mod A)$ are generically trivial. This is an analogue of a result of Crawley-Boevey for module categories. As a consequence, we show that $D(\Mod A)$ is generically trivial if and only if the category of perfect complexes $K^b(\proj A)$ is locally finite.
Let $A$ be a graded algebra. It is shown that the derived category of dg modules over $A$ (viewed as a dg algebra with trivial differential) is a triangulated hull of a certain orbit category of the derived category of graded $A$-modules. This is applied to study derived categories of graded gentle one-cycle algebras.
Recollements of derived module categories are investigated, using a new technique, ladders of recollements, which are mutation sequences. The position in the ladder is shown to control whether a recollement restricts from unbounded to another level of derived category. Ladders also turn out to control derived simplicity on all levels. An algebra is derived simple if its derived category cannot be deconstructed, that is, if it is not the middle term of a non-trivial recollement whose outer terms are again derived categories of algebras. Derived simplicity on each level is characterised in terms…
Using the relative derived categories, we prove that if an Artin algebra $A$ has a module $T$ with ${\rm inj.dim}T<\infty$ such that $^\perp T$ is finite, then the bounded derived category $D^b({\rm mod}A)$ admits a categorical resolution; and that for CM-finite Gorenstein algebra, such a categorical resolution is weakly crepant.
In this paper, we discuss a relationship between representation theory of graded self-injective algebras and that of algebras of finite global dimension. For a positively graded self-injective algebra $A$ such that $A_0$ has finite global dimension, we construct two types of triangle-equivalences. First we show that there exists a triangle-equivalence between the stable category of $\mathbb{Z}$-graded $A$-modules and the derived category of a certain algebra $Γ$ of finite global dimension. Secondly we show that if $A$ has Gorenstein parameter $\ell$, then there exists a triangle-equivalence be…
Let $\Mod \CS$ denote the category of $\CS$-modules, where $\CS$ is a small category. In the first part of this paper, we provide a version of Rickard's theorem on derived equivalence of rings for $\Mod \CS$. This will have several interesting applications. In the second part, we apply our techniques to get some interesting recollements of derived categories in different levels. We specialize our results to path rings as well as graded rings.
Relations between Gorenstein derived categories, Gorenstein defect categories and Gorenstein stable categories are established. Using these, the Gorensteinness of an algebra $A$ and invariants with respect to recollements of the bounded Gorenstein derived category $D^{b}_{gp}(A\mbox{-}{\rm mod})$ of $A$ are investigated. Specifically, the Gorensteinness of $A$ is characterized in three ways: the existence of Auslander-Reiten triangles in $D^{b}_{gp}(A\mbox{-}{\rm mod})$; recollements of $D^{b}_{gp}(A\mbox{-}{\rm mod})$; and also Gorenstein derived equivalences. It is shown that the finiteness …
We study the homotopy category $ K(\Inj A)$ of all injective modules over a finite dimensional algebra $A$ with discrete derived category. We give a classification of the indecomposable objects of $ K(\Inj A)$ for any radical square zero self-injective algebra $A$. In particular, every indecomposable object is endofinite.
By using the relative derived categories, we prove that if an Artin algebra $A$ has a module $T$ with ${\rm inj.dim}T<\infty$ such that $^\perp T$ is finite, then the bounded derived category $D^b(A\mbox{-}{\rm mod})$ admits a categorical resolution in the sense of [Kuz], and a categorical desingularization in the sense of [BO]. For CM-finite Gorenstein algebra, such a categorical resolution is weakly crepant. The similar results hold also for $D^b(A\mbox{-}{\rm Mod})$.
We give an upper bound on the dimension of the bounded derived category of an abelian category. We show that if $\CX$ is a sufficiently nice subcategory of an abelian category, then derived dimension of $\CA$ is at most $\CX$-dim$\CA$, provided $\CX$-dim$\CA$ is greater than one. We provide some applications.
We classify the thick subcategories of discrete derived categories. To do this we introduce certain generating sets called arc-collections which correspond to configurations of non-crossing arcs on a geometric model. We show that every thick subcategory is generated by an arc-collection, each thick subcategory is determined by the topology of the corresponding configuration, and we describe a version of mutation which acts transitively on the set of arc-collections generating a given thick subcategory.
Inspired by recent work of Hernandez-Leclerc and Leclerc-Plamondon we investigate the link between Nakajima's graded affine quiver varieties associated with an acyclic connected quiver Q and the derived category of Q. As Leclerc-Plamondon have shown, the points of these varieties can be interpreted as representations of a category, which we call the (singular) Nakajima category S. We determine the quiver of S and the number of minimal relations between any two given vertices. We construct a delta-functor Phi taking each finite-dimensional representation of S to an object of the derived categor…
For any positive integer $n$, $n$-derived-simple derived discrete algebras are classified up to derived equivalence. Furthermore, the Jordan-Hölder theorems for all kinds of derived categories of derived discrete algebras are obtained.
A Jordan Hölder theorem is established for derived module categories of piecewise hereditary algebras. The resulting composition series of derived categories are shown to be independent of the choice of bounded or unbounded derived module categories, and also of the choice of finitely generated or arbitrary modules.
Recollements of triangulated categories may be seen as exact sequences of such categories. Iterated recollements of triangulated categories are analogues of geometric or topological stratifications and of composition series of algebraic objects. We discuss the question of uniqueness of such a stratification, up to ordering and derived equivalence, for derived module categories. The main result is a positive answer in the form of a Jordan Hölder theorem for derived module categories of hereditary artin algebras. We also provide examples of derived simple rings.
We study the derived categories of small categories over commutative noetherian rings. Our main result is a parametrization of the localizing subcategories in terms of the spectrum of the ring and the localizing subcategories over residue fields. In the special case of representations of Dynkin quivers over a commutative noetherian ring we give a complete description of the localizing subcategories of the derived category, a complete description of the thick subcategories of the perfect complexes and show the telescope conjecture holds. We also present some results concerning the telescope con…
Discrete derived categories were studied initially by Vossieck and later by Bobiński, Geiß, Skowroński. In this article, we describe the homomorphism hammocks and autoequivalences on these categories. We classify silting objects and bounded t-structures.
For a recollement $(\mathcal{D}B,\mathcal{D}A,\mathcal{D}C)$ of derived categories of algebras, we investigate when the functor $j^*:\mathcal{D}A\rightarrow\mathcal{D}C$ is an eventually homological isomorphism. In this context, we compare the algebras $A$ and $C$ with respect to Gorensteinness, singularity categories and the finite generation condition Fg for the Hochschild cohomology. The results are applied to stratifying ideals, triangular matrix algebras and derived discrete algebras.
We associate a t-structure to a family of objects in D(A), the derived category of a Grothendieck category A. Using general results on t-structures, we give a new proof of Rickard's theorem on equivalence of bounded derived categories of modules. Also, we extend this result to bounded derived categories of quasi-coherent sheaves on separated divisorial schemes obtaining, in particular, Beilinson's equivalences.
We investigate the properties of pure derived categories of module categories, and show that pure derived categories share many nice properties of classical derived categories. In particular, we show that bounded pure derived categories can be realized as certain homotopy categories. We introduce the pure projective (resp. injective) dimension of complexes in pure derived categories, and give some criteria for computing these dimensions in terms of the properties of pure projective (resp. injective) resolutions and pure derived functors. As a consequence, we get some equivalent characterizatio…

We study two constructions related to the intervals of finite posets. The first one is a poset. The second one is more complicated. Loosely speaking it can be seen as a poset with some extra zero-relations. As main result, we show that these two constructions are equivalent at the level of derived categories.
We study semiorthogonal decompositions of bounded derived categories of gentle algebras and how they are manifested in the geometric model of these categories as constructed by Opper, Plamondon and Schroll. We prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between such semiorthogonal decompositions and suitable cuts of the marked surface underlying the geometric model. Our main tool is the characterization of basis morphisms between indecomposable objects due to Arnesen, Laking and Pauksztello.
By a result of Orlov there always exists an embedding of the derived category of a finite-dimensional algebra of finite global dimension into the derived category of a high-dimensional smooth projective variety. In this article we give some restrictions on those algebras whose derived categories can be embedded into the bounded derived category of a smooth projective surface. This is then applied to obtain explicit results for hereditary algebras.
In this paper, we prove Faltings' annihilator theorem for complexes over a CM-excellent ring. As an application, we give a complete classification of the t-structures of the bounded derived category of finitely generated modules over a CM-excellent ring of finite Krull dimension.
We study distances on zigzag persistence modules from the viewpoint of derived categories and Auslander--Reiten quivers. The derived category of ordinary persistence modules is derived equivalent to that of arbitrary zigzag persistence modules, depending on a classical tilting module. Through this derived equivalence, we define and compute distances on the derived category of arbitrary zigzag persistence modules and prove an algebraic stability theorem. We also compare our distance with the distance for purely zigzag persistence modules introduced by Botnan--Lesnick and the sheaf-theoretic con…
Derived decompositions of abelian categories are introduced in internal terms of abelian subcategories to construct semi-orthogonal decompositions (or Bousfield localizations, or hereditary torsion pairs) in various derived categories of abelian categories. We give a sufficient condition for arbitrary abelian categories to have such derived decompositions and show that it is also necessary for abelian categories with enough projectives and injectives. For bounded derived categories, we describe which semi-orthogonal decompositions are determined by derived decompositions. The necessary and suf…
In this article we classify indecomposable objects of the derived categories of finitely-generated modules over certain infinite-dimensional algebras. The considered class of algebras (which we call nodal algebras) contains such well-known algebras as the complete ring of a double nodal point $\kk[[x,y]]/(xy)$ and the completed path algebra of the Gelfand quiver. As a corollary we obtain a description of the derived category of Harish-Chandra modules over $SL_{2}({\mathbb R})$. We also give an algorithm, which allows to construct projective resolutions of indecomposable complexes. In the appen…
In general, representation rings are well-known as Green rings from module categories of Hopf algebras. In this paper, we study Green rings in the context of monoidal categories such that representations of Hopf algebras can be investigated through Green rings of various levels from module categories to derived categories in the unified view-point. Firstly, as analogue of representation rings of Hopf algebras, we set up the so-called Green rings of monoidal categories, and then list some such categories including module categories, complex categories, homotopy categories, derived categories an…
Discrete derived categories were studied initially by Vossieck \cite{Vossieck} and later by Bobiński, Geiß, Skowroński \cite{BGS}. In this article, we define the CW complex of silting pairs for a triangulated category and show that it is contractible in the case of discrete derived categories. We provide an explicit embedding from the silting CW complex into the stability manifold. By work of Qiu and Woolf, there is a deformation retract of the stability manifold onto the silting pairs CW complex. We obtain that the space of stability conditions of discrete derived categories is contractible.
We give two proofs to the following theorem and its generalization: if a finite dimensional algebra $A$ is derived equivalent to a smooth projective scheme, then any derived equivalence between $A$ and another algebra $B$ is standard, that is, isomorphic to the derived tensor functor by a two-sided tilting complex. The main ingredients of the proofs are as follows: (1) between the derived categories of two module categories, liftable functors coincide with standard functors; (2) any derived equivalence between a module category and an abelian category is uniquely factorized as the composition …
We introduce syzygies for derived categories and study their properties. Using these, we prove the derived invariance of the following classes of artin algebras: (1) syzygy-finite algebras, (2) Igusa-Todorov algebras, (3) AC algebras, (4) algebras satisfying the finitistic Auslander conjecture, and (5) algebras satisfying the generalized Auslander-Reiten conjecture. In particular, Gorenstein CM-finite algebras are derived invariants.
We study two kinds of categorical traces of (monoidal) dg categories, with particular interest in categories of Soergel bimodules. First, we explicitly compute the usual Hochschild homology, or derived vertical trace, of the category of Soergel bimodules in arbitrary types. Secondly, we introduce the notion of derived horizontal trace of a monoidal dg category and compute the derived horizontal trace of Soergel bimodules in type A. As an application we obtain a derived annular Khovanov-Rozansky link invariant with an action of full twist insertion, and thus a categorification of the HOMFLY-PT …
It is proved that an element $r$ in the center of a coherent ring $Λ$ annihilates $\mathrm{Ext}^{n}_Λ(M,N)$, for some positive integer $n$ and all finitely presented $Λ$-modules $M$ and $N$, if and only if the bounded derived category of $Λ$ is an extension of the subcategory consisting of complexes annihilated by $r$ and those obtained as $n$-fold extensions of $Λ$. This has applications to finiteness of dimension of derived categories.
