We consider relationships between families of K3 surfaces, in the context of string theory. An important ingredient of string theory also of interest in algebraic geometry is T-duality. Donagi and Pantev have extended the original duality on genus one fibred K3 surfaces with a section to the case of any genus one fibration, via a Fourier-Mukai transform. We investigate possibilities of extending this result to the more general case of non fibred K3s, in the context of Caldararu's conjecture.
We also provide an explicit construction of a quasi-universal sheaf associated to the classical Mukai correspondence.
Let $f:S \fr B$ be a surface fibration with fibres of genus 5. We find a linear relation between the fundamental invariants of the surface. Namely $K_f^2=χ_f+N$ where $N$ is the number of trigonal fibres. Our proof is based on the analysis of the relative canonical algebra $\cal{R}(f)$.
We generalise a method of Xiao Gang to construct 'prototypes' of fibred surfaces with maximal irregularity without being a product. This enables us, in the case of fibre genus g=3 to describe the possible singular fibres and to calculate the invariants of these surfaces. We also prove structure theorems on the moduli space for fibred surfaces with fibre genus g=2 and g=3.
This note aims to improve known numerical bounds proved earlier by Chen \cite{PAMS} and Chen-Hacon \cite{Chen-Hacon} and to present some new examples of smooth minimal 3-folds canonically fibred by surfaces (resp. curves) of geometric genus as large as 19 (resp. 13). As an interesting by-product, we present a new class of general type surfaces which are canonically fibred by curves of genus 13.
We consider a rational surface with a relatively minimal fibration. Picard number of a such fibred surface is bounded in terms of the genus of a general fibre. When Picard number is the maximum for any given genus, we characterize a such fibred surface whose Mordell-Weil group is trivial by singular fibres. Furthermore, we describe the defining equation explicitly.
We prove that the genus $g$, the relative irregularity $q_f$ and the Clifford index $c_f$ of a non-isotrivial fibration $f$ satisfy the inequality $q_f \leq g - c_f$. This gives in particular a proof of Xiao's conjecture for fibrations whose general fibres have maximal Clifford index.
Let $f:\,S \to B$ be a locally non-trivial relatively minimal fibration of genus $g\geq 2$ with relative irregularity $q_f$. It was conjectured by Barja and Stoppino that the slope $λ_f\geq \frac{4(g-1)}{g-q_f}$. We prove the conjecture when $q_f$ is small with respect to $g$; we also construct counterexamples when $g$ is odd and $q_f=(g+1)/2$.
We consider relatively minimal fibrations of curves of genus two on rational surfaces whose Picard numbers are not maximal. By birational morphisms, such fibred surfaces are interpreted as pencils of plane curves. We show that only four are canonical, among a variety of possible models. For each canonical pencil, we give an example with trivial Mordell-Weil group.
Let f: X->B be a fibred surface of genus g whose general fibre is a double cover of a smooth curve of genus gamma. We show that, for g > 4gamma+1, the number 4(g-1)/(g-gamma) is a sharp lower bound for the slope of f, proving a conjecture of Barja. Moreover, we give a characterisation of the fibred surfaces that reach the bound. In the case g = 4gamma+1 we obtain the same sharp bound under the assumption that the involutions on the general fibres glue to a global involution on X.
K. Konno proved a slope equality for fibred surfaces with fibres of odd genus and general fibre of maximal gonality. More precisely he found a relation between the invariants of the fibration and certain weights of special fibres (called the Horikawa numbers). We give an alternative and more geometric proof in the case of a genus 5 fibration, under generality assumptions. In our setting we are able to prove that the fibre with positive Horikawa numbers are precisely the trigonal ones, we compute their weights explicitly and thus we exhibit explicit examples of regular surfaces with assigned in…
We describe the minimal number of critical points and the minimal number $s$ of singular fibres for a non isotrivial fibration of a surface $S$ over a curve $B$ of genus $1$, constructing a fibration with $s=1$ and irreducible singular fibre with $4$ nodes. Then we consider the associated factorizations in the mapping class group and in the symplectic group. We describe explicitly which products of transvections on homologically independent and disjoint circles are a commutator in the Symplectic group $Sp (2g, \mathbb{Z})$.
In this note we prove the genus 3 case of a conjecture of G. Farkas and A. Verra on the limit of the Scorza correspondence for curves with a theta-null. Specifically, we show that the limit of the Scorza correspondence for a hyperelliptic genus 3 curve C is the union of the curve ${x,σ(x))$ (where $σ$ is the hyperelliptic involution), and twice the diagonal. Our proof uses the geometry of the subsystem Γ_{00} of the linear system 2Θ, and Riemann identities for theta constants.
In this paper, we construct certain algebraic correspondences between genus three curves and certain type of Calabi-Yau threefolds which is double coverings of three dimensional projective space. Via this correspondences, the first cohomology groups of the curves can be embedded into the third cohomology groups of the Calabi-Yau three folds. Moreover we prove that the cokernel of this inclusion of variations ofHodge structures can not be a factor of any variations of Hodge structures comming from polarized abelian schemes.
The Katz-Klemm-Vafa conjecture expresses the Gromov-Witten theory of K3 surfaces (and K3-fibred 3-folds in fibre classes) in terms of modular forms. Its recent proof gives the first non-toric geometry in dimension greater than 1 where Gromov-Witten theory is exactly solved in all genera. We survey the various steps in the proof. The MNOP correspondence and a new Pairs/Noether-Lefschetz correspondence for K3-fibred 3-folds transform the Gromov-Witten problem into a calculation of the full stable pairs theory of a local K3-fibred 3-fold. The stable pairs calculation is then carried out via degen…
We discuss an algebro-geometric description of Witten's phases of N=2 theories and propose a definition of their elliptic genus provided some conditions on singularities of the phases are met. For Landau-Ginzburg phase one recovers elliptic genus of LG models proposed in physics literature in early 90s. For certain transitions between phases we derive invariance of elliptic genus from an equivariant form of McKay correspondence for elliptic genus. As special cases one obtains Landau-Giznburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence for elliptic genus of weighted homogeneous potentials as well as certain hybr…
Let f:S ->B be a relatively minimal fibred surface. In this note we give a partial affirmative answer to a conjecture of Xiao, proving that the direct image of the relative dualizing sheaf of $f$ is ample when the slope of the fibration is less than 4, if the general fibre of $f$ is non-hyperelliptic or the genus of the fibre or of the base curve is low.
We define the singular orbifold elliptic genus and $E$-function for all normal surfaces without strictly log-canonical singularities, and prove the analogue of the McKay correspondence in this setting. Our invariants generalize the stringy invariants defined by Willem Veys for this class of singularities. We show that the ability to define these invariants is closely linked to rigidity phenomena associated to the elliptic genus.
By associating to a curve C of genus g=2k and a pencil of degree d=k+1 the so-called trace curve (resp. the reduced trace curve) we define a rational map from the Hurwitz space of admissible covers of genus g=2k and degree d=k+1 to a moduli space of stable curves. We study the induced map between the divisor class groups of these moduli spaces of curves.
We prove an equivariant version of the McKay correspondence for the elliptic genus on open varieties with a torus action. As a consequence, we will prove the equivariant DMVV formula for the Hilbert scheme of points on $\C^2$.
We present a method of obtaining a Belyi map on an elliptic curve from that on the Riemann sphere. This is done by writing the former as a radical of the latter, which we call a quadratic correspondence, with the radical determining the elliptic curve. With a host of examples of various degrees we demonstrate that the correspondence is an efficient way of obtaining genus one Belyi maps. As applications, we find the Belyi maps for the dessins d'enfant which have arisen as brane-tilings in the physics community, including ones, such as the so-called suspended pinched point, which have been a sta…
In this paper we present an algorithm for computing Hecke eigensystems of Hilbert-Siegel cusp forms over real quadratic fields of narrow class number one. We give some illustrative examples using the quadratic field $\Q(\sqrt{5})$. In those examples, we identify Hilbert-Siegel eigenforms that are possible lifts from Hilbert eigenforms.
We prove the Abelian/non-Abelian Correspondence with bundles for target spaces that are partial flag bundles, combining and generalising results by Ciocan-Fontanine-Kim-Sabbah, Brown, and Oh. From this we deduce how genus-zero Gromov-Witten invariants change when a smooth projective variety X is blown up in a complete intersection defined by convex line bundles. In the case where the blow-up is Fano, our result gives closed-form expressions for certain genus-zero invariants of the blow-up in terms of invariants of X. We also give a reformulation of the Abelian/non-Abelian Correspondence in ter…
We prove the genus-one restriction of the all-genus Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau conjecture of Chiodo and Ruan, stated in terms of the geometric quantization of an explicit symplectomorphism determined by genus-zero invariants. This provides the first evidence supporting the higher-genus Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence for the quintic threefold, and exhibits the first instance of the "genus zero controls higher genus" principle, in the sense of Givental's quantization formalism, for non-semisimple cohomological field theories.
In this paper, we introduce modular polynomials for the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(M)$ when $ X_0(M) $ has genus zero and therefore the polynomials are defined by a Hauptmodul of $ X_0(M) $. We show that the intersection number of two curves defined by two modular polynomials can be expressed as the sum of the numbers of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-equivalence classes of positive definite binary quadratic forms over $\mathbb{Z}$. We also show that the intersection numbers can be also combinatorially written by Fourier coefficients of the Siegel Eisenstein series of degree 2, weight 2 with respec…
We compute Gromov-Witten (GW) and Donaldson-Thomas (DT) invariants (and also descendant invariants) for local CY 4-folds over Fano 3-folds, V_5 and V_22 up to degree 3. We use torus localization for GW invariants computation, and use classical results for Hilbert schemes on V_5 and V_22 for DT invariants computation. From these computations, one can check correspondence between DT and Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) invariants conjectured by Cao-Maulik-Toda in genus 0. Also we can compute genus 1 GV invariants via the conjecture of Cao-Toda, which turned out to be 0. These fit into the fact that there are…
Using degeneration techniques, we prove the correspondence of tropical curve counts and log Gromov-Witten invariants with general incidence and psi-class conditions in toric varieties for genus zero curves and all non-superabundant higher-genus situations. We also relate the log invariants to the ordinary ones, in particular explaining the appearance of negative multiplicities in the descendant correspondence result of Mark Gross.
We establish a genus zero correspondence between the equivariant Gromov-Witten theory of the Deligne-Mumford stack $[\mathbb{C}^N/G]$ and its blowup at the origin. The relationship generalizes the crepant transformation conjecture of Coates-Iritani-Tseng and Coates-Ruan to the discrepant (non-crepant) setting using asymptotic expansion. Using this result together with quantum Serre duality and the MLK correspondence we prove LG/Fano and LG/general type correspondences for hypersurfaces.
In this paper we show that there is a correspondence between some $K3$ surfaces with non-isometric transcendental lattices constructed as a twist of the transcendental lattice of the Jacobian of a generic genus 2 curve. Moreover, we show the existence of a correspondence between a general $K3$ surface with $ρ=17$ and a Kummer surface having transcendental lattices $\QQ$-Hodge isomorphic.
The abelian-nonabelian correspondence outlined by Bertram, Ciocan-Fontanine, and Kim gives a broad conjectural relationship between (twisted) Gromov-Witten invariants of related GIT quotients. This paper proves a case of the correspondence explicitly relating genus zero m-pointed Gromov-Witten invariants of Grassmannians Gr(2,n) and products of projective space $\PP^{n-1} \times \PP^{n-1}$. Localization is used to compute twisted Gromov-Witten invariants of $\PP^{n-1} \times \PP^{n-1}$, and comparison of the moduli spaces of stable maps completes the proof.
We use the BGG-correspondence to show that there are at most three possible Hilbert functions for smooth rational surfaces of degree 11 and sectional genus 11. Surfaces with one of these Hilbert functions have been classified by Popescu. The classification for a second one is done in this paper. For the third Hilbert function the classification is still open.
Bloch's conjecture for a surface $X$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ states that every homologically trivial correspondence $Γ$ acts as 0 on the Albanese kernel $T(X_Ω)$, where $Ω$ is a universal domain containing $k$. Here we prove that, for a complex K3 surface $X$, Bloch's conjecture is equivalent to the existence of a valence for every correspondence. We also give applications of this result to the case of a correspondence associated to an automorphisms of finite order and to the existence of constant cycle curves on $X$. Finally we show that Franchetta's conjecture, as stated by K.…
We exhibit new examples of double Kodaira fibrations by using finite Galois covers of a product $Σ_b \times Σ_b$, where $Σ_b$ is a smooth projective curve of genus $b \geq 2$. Each cover is obtained by providing an explicit group epimorphism from the pure braid group $\mathsf{P}_2(Σ_b)$ to some finite Heisenberg group. In this way, we are able to show that every curve of genus $b$ is the base of a double Kodaira fibration; moreover, the number of pairwise non-isomorphic Kodaira fibred surfaces fibering over a fixed curve $Σ_b$ is at least $\boldsymbolω(b+1)$, where $\boldsymbolω \colon \mathbb…
This research monograph focuses on the arithmetic, over number fields, of surfaces fibred into curves of genus 1 over the projective line, and of intersections of two quadrics in projective space. The first half takes up and develops further the technique initiated by Swinnerton-Dyer in 1993, and later generalised by Colliot-Thélène, Skorobogatov and Swinnerton-Dyer, for studying rational points on pencils of curves of genus 1. The second half, which builds upon the first, is devoted to quartic del Pezzo surfaces and to higher-dimensional intersections of two quadrics. Conditionally on two wel…
In this paper, we study the deformation theory of degenerate algebraic curves on singular varieties which appear as the degenerate limit of families of varieties. For this purpose, we systematically develop a new method to calculate the obstruction cohomology class of degenerate algebraic curves. This enables us to judge whether a given degenerate curve can be deformed to a smooth curve or not in variety of situations. In this paper, we apply it to curves of genus one on degeneration of toric varieties. In particular, we obtain the necessary and sufficient condition for the realizability of tr…
We compute the recently introduced Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten theory of W-curves in genus zero for quintic polynomials in five variables and we show that it matches the Gromov-Witten genus-zero theory of the quintic three-fold via a symplectic transformation. More specifically, we show that the J-function encoding the Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten theory on the A-side equals via a mirror map the I-function embodying the period integrals at the Gepner point on the B-side. This identification inscribes the physical Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence within the enumerative geometry of moduli of curve…
We introduce a tropical geometric framework that allows us to define $ψ$ classes for moduli spaces of tropical curves of arbitrary genus. We prove correspondence theorems between algebraic and tropical $ψ$ classes for some one-dimensional families of genus-one tropical curves.
We study threefolds $Y$ fibred by $A_m$-surfaces over a curve $S$ of positive genus. An ideal triangulation of $S$ defines, for each rank $m$, a quiver $Q(Δ_m)$, hence a $CY_3$-category $(C,W)$ for any potential $W$ on $Q(Δ_m)$. We show that for $ω$ in an open subset of the Kähler cone, a subcategory of a sign-twisted Fukaya category of $(Y,ω)$ is quasi-isomorphic to $(C,W_{[ω]})$ for a certain generic potential $W_{[ω]}$. This partially establishes a conjecture of Goncharov concerning `categorifications' of cluster varieties of framed $PGL_{m+1}$-local systems on $S$, and gives a symplectic g…
We define a generalization of Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten theory, a "hybrid" model associated to a collection of quasihomogeneous polynomials of the same weights and degree, which is expected to match the Gromov-Witten theory of the Calabi-Yau complete intersection cut out by the polynomials. In genus zero, we prove that the correspondence holds for any such complete intersection of dimension three in ordinary, rather than weighted, projective space. These results generalize those of Chiodo-Ruan for the quintic threefold, and as in that setting, Givental's quantization can be used to yield a conjec…
We show that, for each $n>0$, there is a family of elliptic surfaces which are covered by the square of a curve of genus $2n+1$, and whose Hodge structures have an action by ${\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{-n})$. By considering the case $n=3$, we show that one particular family of K3 surfaces are covered by the square of genus $7$. Using this, we construct a correspondence between the square of a curve of genus $7$ and a general K3 surface in ${\mathbb P}^4$ with $15$ ordinary double points up to isogeny. This gives an explicit proof of the Kuga-Satake-Deligne correspondence for these K3 surfaces and any K…
We compute equations for real multiplication on the divisor classes of genus two curves via algebraic correspondences. We do so by implementing van Wamelen's method for computing equations for endomorphisms of Jacobians on examples drawn from the algebraic models for Hilbert modular surfaces computed by Elkies and Kumar. We also compute a correspondence over the universal family for the Hilbert modular surface of discriminant 5 and use our equations to prove a conjecture of A. Wright on dynamics over the moduli space of Riemann surfaces.
Computation of Gauss's arithmetic-geometric mean involves iteration of a simple step, whose algebro-geometric interpretation is the construction of an elliptic curve isogenous to a given one, specifically one whose period is double the original period. A higher genus analogue should involve the explicit construction of a curve whose jacobian is isogenous to the jacobian of a given curve. The doubling of the period matrix means that the kernel of the isogeny should be a lagrangian subgroup of the group of points of order 2 in the jacobian. In genus 2 such a construction was given classically by…
We describe explicit formulas relevant to the F-theory/heterotic string duality that reconstruct from a specific Jacobian elliptic fibration on the Shioda-Inose surface covering a generic Kummer surface the corresponding genus-two curve using the level-two Satake coordinate functions. We derive explicitly the rational map on the moduli space of genus-two curves realizing the algebraic correspondence between a sextic curve and its Satake sextic. We will prove that it is not the original sextic defining the genus-two curve, but its corresponding Satake sextic which is manifest in the F-theory mo…
