We discuss several natural metrics on spaces of unbounded self--adjoint operators and their relations, among them the Riesz and the graph metric. We show that the topologies of the spaces of Fredholm operators resp. invertible operators depend heavily on the metric. Nevertheless we prove that in all cases the spectral flow is up to a normalization the only integer invariant of non-closed paths which is path additive and stable under homotopies with endpoints varying in the space of invertible self-adjoint operators.
Furthermore we show that for certain Riesz continuous paths of self--adjoint Fredholm operators the spectral flow can be expressed in terms of the index of the pair of positive spectral projections at the endpoints.
Finally we review the Cordes--Labrousse theorem on the stability of the Fredholm index with respect to the graph metric in a modern language and we generalize it to the Clifford index and to the equivariant index.
This paper is a continuation of the paper (A.G.Ramm, Amer. Math. Monthly, 108, N 9, (2001), 855-860), where bounded Fredholm operators are studied. The theory of bounded linear Fredholm-type operators is presented in many texts. This paper is written for a broad audience and the author tries to give simple and short arguments.
An analytic definition of a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-valued spectral flow for paths of real skew-adjoint Fredholm operators is given. It counts the parity of the number of changes in the orientation of the eigenfunctions at eigenvalue crossings through $0$ along the path. The $\mathbb{Z}_2$-valued spectral flow is shown to satisfy a concatenation property and homotopy invariance, and it provides an isomorphism on the fundamental group of the real skew-adjoint Fredholm operators. Moreover, it is connected to a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-index pairing for suitable paths. Applications concern the zero energy bound sta…
One may trace the idea that spectral flow should be given as the integral of a one form back to the 1974 Vancouver ICM address of I.M. Singer. Our main theorem gives analytic formulae for the spectral flow along a norm differentiable path of self-adjoint bounded Breuer-Fredholm operators in a semi-finite von Neumann algebra. These formulae have a geometric interpretation which derives from the proof. Namely we define a family of Banach submanifolds of all bounded self-adjoint Breuer-Fredholm operators and on each submanifold define global one forms whose integral on a norm differentiable path …
In this article, we prove and disprove several generalizations of unbounded versions of the Fuglede-Putnam theorem. As applications, we give conditions guaranteeing the commutativity of a bounded self-adjoint operator with an unbounded closed symmetric operator.
In this paper we consider A-Fredholm and semi-A-Fredholm operators on Hilbert C*-modules over a W*-algebra A defined in [3],[10]. Using the assumption that A is a W*-algebra (and not an arbitrary C*-algebra), we obtain several results such as generalization of Schechter-Lebow characterization of semi-Fredholm operators and generalization of "punctured neighbourhood" theorem, as well as some other results that generalize their classical counterparts. We consider both adjointable and non adjointable semi-Fredholm operators over W*-algebras. Moreover, we also work with general bounded, adjointabl…
We prove that a first order linear differential operator G with unbounded operator coefficients is Fredholm on spaces of functions on the real line with values in a reflexive Banach space if and only if the corresponding strongly continuous evolution family has exponential dichotomies on both semiaxises and a pair of the ranges of the dichotomy projections is Fredholm, and that the Fredholm index of G is equal to the Fredholm index of the pair. The operator G is the generator of the evolution semigroup associated with the evolution family. In the case when the evolution family is the propagato…
In this article we give a comprehensive treatment of a `Clifford module flow' along paths in the skew-adjoint Fredholm operators on a real Hilbert space that takes values in KO${}_{*}(\mathbb{R})$ via the Clifford index of Atiyah-Bott-Shapiro. We develop its properties for both bounded and unbounded skew-adjoint operators including an axiomatic characterization. Our constructions and approach are motivated by the principle that \[ \text{spectral flow} = \text{Fredholm index}. \] That is, we show how the KO--valued spectral flow relates to a KO-valued index by proving a Robbin-Salamon type resu…
In this note, we mainly investigate the validity of the identities $(TT^*)^*=TT^*$ and $(T^*T)^*=T^*T$, where $T$ is a densely defined closable (or symmetric) operator.
Starting from the definition of A-Fredholm and semi-A-Fredholm operator on the standard module over a unital C*- algebra A, introduced in [8] and [4], we construct various generalizations of these operators and obtain several results as an analogue or a generalization of the results in [1], [2], [3],[7]. Moreover, we study also non-adjointable semi-A-Fredholm operators as a natural continuation of the work in [6] on non-adjointable A-Fredholm operators and obtain an analogue or a generalization in this setting of the results in [4], [5].
A new geometric proof of the spectral theorem for unbounded self-adjoint operators A in a Hilbert space H is given based on a splitting of A in positive and negative parts A+ and A-. For both operators A+ and A- the spectral family can be defined immediately and then put together to become the spectral family of A.
In noncommutative geometry one is interested in invariants such as the Fredholm index or spectral flow and their calculation using cyclic cocycles. A variety of formulae have been established under side conditions called summability constraints. These can be formulated in two ways, either for spectral triples or for bounded Fredholm modules. We study the relationship between these by proving various properties of the map on unbounded self adjoint operators $D$ given by $f(D)=D(1+D^2)^{-1/2}$. In particular we prove commutator estimates which are needed for the bounded case. In fact our methods…
Let $L$ be a self-adjoint invertible operator in a Hilbert space such that $L^{-1}$ is $p$-summable. Under a certain discrete dimension spectrum assumption on $L$, we study the relation between the (regularized) Fredholm determinant, $\det_{p}(I+z\cdot L^{-1})$, on the one hand and the zeta regularized determinant, $\det_ζ(L+z)$, on the other. One of the main results is the formula \begin{equation*} \frac{\det_ζ (L + z)}{\det_ζ (L)} = \exp \left( \sum_{j=1}^{p-1} \frac{z^j}{j!} \cdot \frac{d^j}{dz^j} \log \det\nolimits_ζ (L+z) |_{z=0} \right) \cdot \det\nolimits_{p}(I + z \cdot L^{-1} ). \end{…
We study the gap (= "projection norm" = "graph distance") topology of the space of (not necessarily bounded) self--adjoint Fredholm operators in a separable Hilbert space by the Cayley transform and direct methods. In particular, we show that the space is connected contrary to the bounded case. Moreover, we present a rigorous definition of spectral flow of a path of such operators (actually alternative but mutually equivalent definitions) and prove the homotopy invariance. As an example, we discuss operator curves on manifolds with boundary.
We study adjointable, bounded operators on the direct sum of two copies of the standard Hilbert C*-module over a unital C*-algebra A that are given by upper triangular 2 by 2 operator matrices. Using the definition of A-Fredholm and semi-A-Fredholm operators given in [3], [4], we obtain conditions relating semi-A-Fredholmness of these operators and that of their diagonal entries, thus generalizing the results in [1], [2]. Moreover, we generalize the notion of the spectra of operators by replacing scalars by the center of the C*-algebra A denoted by Z(A).Considering these new spectra in Z(A) of…
In this paper a definition is given for an unbounded Toeplitz-like operator with rational symbol which has poles on the unit circle. It is shown that the operator is Fredholm if and only if the symbol has no zeroes on the unit circle, and a formula for the index is given as well. Finally, a matrix representation of the operator is discussed.
We define a new topology, weaker than the gap topology, on the space of selfadjoint unbounded operators on a separable Hilbert space. We show that the subspace of selfadjoint Fredholm operators represents the functor $K^1$ from the category of compact spaces to the category of abelian groups and prove a similar result for $K^0$. We define the spectral flow of a continuous path of selfadjoint Fredholm operators generalizing the approach of Booss-Bavnek--Lesch--Phillips.
An adjoint pair is a pair of densely defined linear operators $A, B$ on a Hilbert space such that $\langle Ax,y\rangle=\langle x,By\rangle$ for $x\in \cD(A), y \in \cD(B).$ We consider adjoint pairs for which $0$ is a regular point for both operators and associate a boundary triplet to such an adjoint pair. Proper extensions of the operator $B$ are in one-to-one correspondence $T_\cC\leftrightarrow \cC $ to closed subspaces $\cC$ of $\cN(A^*)\oplus\cN(B^*)$. In the case when $B$ is formally normal and $\cD(A)=\cD(B)$, the normal operators $T_\cC$ are characterized. Next we assume that $B$ has …
This paper concerns the analysis of an unbounded Toeplitz-like operator generated by a rational matrix function having poles on the unit circle T. It extends the analysis of such operators generated by scalar rational functions with poles on T found in [11,12,13]. A Wiener-Hopf type factorization of rational matrix functions with poles and zeroes on T is proved and then used to analyze the Fredholm properties of such Toeplitz-like operators. A formula for the index, based on the factorization, is given. Furthermore, it is shown that the determinant of the matrix function having no zeroes on T …
Devinatz, Nussbaum and von Neumann established some important results on the strong commutativity of self-adjoint and normal unbounded operators. In this paper, we prove results in the same spirit.
In this paper, we establish results about operators similar to their adjoints. This is carried out in the setting of bounded and also unbounded operators on a Hilbert space. Among the results, we prove that an unbounded closed operator similar to its adjoint, via a cramped unitary operator, is self-adjoint. The proof of this result works also as a new proof of the celebrated result by Berberian on the same problem in the bounded case. Other results on similarity of hyponormal unbounded operators and their self-adjointness are also given, generalizing famous results by Sheth and Williams.
Consider a selfadjoint unbounded operator D on a Hilbert space H and a one parameter norm continuous family of selfadjoint bounded operators {A(t)} parametrized by the real line. Then under certain conditions \cite{RS95} that include the assumption that the operators {D(t)= D+A(t)} all have discrete spectrum then the spectral flow along the path { D(t)} can be shown to be equal to the index of d/dt+D(t) when the latter is an unbounded Fredholm operator on L^2(R, H). In \cite{GLMST11} an investigation of the index=spectral flow question when the operators in the path may have some essential spe…
Let $B$ be a bounded self-adjoint operator and let $A$ be a nonnegative self-adjoint unbounded operator. It is shown that if $BA$ is normal, it must be self-adjoint and so must be $AB$. Commutativity is necessary and sufficient for this result. If $AB$ is normal, it must be self-adjoint and $BA$ is essentially self-adjoint. Although the two problems seem to be alike, two different and quite interesting approaches are used to tackle each one of them.
We describe two topologies on the space of unbounded Fredholm operators and we explain their K-theoretic relevance. In the process we also prove a very general result concerning the continuity of families of first order, elliptic boundary value problems.
In this paper we {\em discuss} diverse aspects of mutual relationship between adjoints and formal adjoints of unbounded operators bearing a matrix structure. We emphasize on the behaviour of row and column operators as they turn out to be the germs of an arbitrary matrix operator, providing most of the information about the latter {as it is the troublemaker}.
In this paper we give and prove a criterion for the normality of unbounded closed operators, which is a sort of a maximality result which will be called "double maximality". As applications, we show, under some assumptions, that the sum of two symmetric operators is essentially self-adjoint; and that the sum of two unbounded normal operators is essentially normal. Some other important results are also established.
We construct operators which factorize the transfer function associated with a non-self-adjoint 2x2 operator matrix whose diagonal entries can have overlapping spectra and whose off-diagonal entries are unbounded operators.
Define $ A $ a unbounded self-adjoint operator on Hilbert space $ X $. Let $ \{ A_n \} $ be its resolvent approximation sequence with closed range $ \mathcal{R}(A_n) (n \in \mathrm{N}) $, that is, $ A_n (n \in \mathrm{N}) $ are all self-adjoint on Hilbert space $ X $ and \begin{equation*} \hbox{ \raise-2mm\hbox{$\textstyle s-\lim \atop \scriptstyle {n \to \infty}$}} R_λ(A_n) = R_λ(A)\quad (λ\in \mathrm{C} \setminus \mathrm{R}), \ \textrm{where} \ R_ λ(A) := (λI-A)^{-1}. \end{equation*} The Moore-Penrose inverse $ A^\dagger_n \in \mathcal{B}(X) $ is a natural approximation to the Moore-Penrose …
We shall consider a double infinite, hermitian, complex entry matrix $A=[a_{x,y}]_{x,y\in\mathbb Z}$, with $a_{x,y}^*=a_{y,x}$, $x,y\in\mathbb Z$. Assuming that the matrix is almost of a finite bandwidth, i.e. there exists an integer $n> 0$ and exponent $γ\in[0,1)$ such that $ a_{x,x+z}=0$ for all $z>n\langle x\rangle^γ$ and the growth of the $\ell_1$ norm of a row is slower than $|x|^{1-γ}$ for $|x|\gg1$, i.e. $\lim_{|x|\to+\infty}| x|^{γ-1}\sum_{y}|a_{xy}|=0$ we prove that the corresponding symmetric operator, defined on compactly supported sequences, is essentially self-adjoint in $\ell_2(\…
In the present paper we give results on the closedness and the self-adjointness of the sum of two unbounded operators. We present a new approach to these fundamental questions in operator theory. We also prove a new version of the Fuglede theorem where the operators involved are all unbounded. This new Fuglede theorem allows us to prove (under extra conditions) that the sum of two unbounded normal operators remains normal. Also a result on the normality of the unbounded product of two normal operators is obtained as a consequence of this new "Fuglede theorem". Some interesting examples are als…
In this paper the concept of unbounded Fredholm operators on Hilbert C*- modules over an arbitrary C*-algebra is discussed and the Atkinson theorem is generalized for bounded and unbounded Feredholm operators on Hilbert C*-modules over C*-algebras of compact operators. In the framework of Hilbert C*-modules over C*-algebras of compact operators, the index of an unbounded Fredholm operator and the index of its bounded transform are the same.
Let $A$ and $B$ be two densely defined unbounded closeable operators in a Hilbert space such that their unbounded operator products $AB$ and $BA$ are also densely defined. Then all four operators possess adjoints and we obtain new inclusion bounds for the operator product closures $\bar{A} \bar{B}$ and $\bar{AB}$ in terms of new relations among the operator adjoints. These in turn lead to sharpened understandings for when products of unbounded self-adjoint and unbounded normal operators are self-adjoint and normal. They also clarify certain operator-product issues for Dirac operators.
In a previous paper, the authors introduced the idea of a symmetric pair of operators as a way to compute self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators. In brief, a symmetric pair consists of two densely defined linear operators $A$ and $B$, with $A \subseteq B^\star$ and $B \subseteq A^\star$. In this paper, we will show by example that symmetric pairs may be used to deduce closability of operators and sometimes even compute adjoints. In particular, we prove that the Malliavin derivative and Skorokhod integral of stochastic calculus are closable, and the closures are mutually adjoint. We als…
This paper addresses two different but related questions regarding an unbounded symmetric tridiagonal operator: its self-adjointness and the approximation of its spectrum by the eigenvalues of its finite truncations. The sufficient conditions given in both cases improve and generalize previously known results. It turns out that, not only self-adjointness helps to study limit points of eigenvalues of truncated operators, but the analysis of such limit points is a key help to prove self-adjointness. Several examples show the advantages of these new results compared with previous ones. Besides, a…
We generalize Moore's nonstandard proof of the Spectral theorem for bounded self-adjoint operators to the case of unbounded operators. The key step is to use a definition of the nonstandard hull of an internally bounded self-adjoint operator due to Raab.
In the classical operator theory, there are several versions of spectra, related to special classes of operators (Fredholm, semi-Fredholm, upper/lower semi-Fredholm,etc.). We generalize these notions for adjointable operators on Hilbert C*-modules replacing scalars by the center of the algebra, and show that most relations between these spectra are still true for these generalized versions. The relation between these spectra of an operator and those of its compressions is also transferred to the case of Hilbert C*-modules.
If a Banach-space operator has a complemented range, then its normed-space adjoint has a complemented kernel and the converse holds on a reflexive Banach space. It is also shown when complemented kernel for an operator is equivalent to complemented range for its normed-space adjoint. This is applied to compact operators and to compact perturbations. In particular, compact perturbations of semi-Fredholm operators have complemented range and kernel for both the perturbed operator and its normed-space adjoint
Let $A$ be a linear bounded operator in a Hilbert space $H$, $N(A)$ and $R(A)$ its null-space and range, and $A^*$ its adjoint. The operator $A$ is called Fredholm iff $dim N(A)= dim N(A^*):=n<\infty$ and $R(A)$ and $R(A^*)$ are closed subspaces of $H$. A simple and short proof is given of the following known result: $A$ is Fredholm iff $A=B+F$, where $B$ is an isomorphism and $F$ is a finite-rank operator. The proof consists in reduction to a finite-dimensional linear algebraic system which is equivalent to the equation $Au=f$ in the case of Fredholm operators.

The problem of approximating the discrete spectra of families of self-adjoint operators that are merely strongly continuous is addressed. It is well-known that the spectrum need not vary continuously (as a set) under strong perturbations. However, it is shown that under an additional compactness assumption the spectrum does vary continuously, and a family of symmetric finite-dimensional approximations is constructed. An important feature of these approximations is that they are valid for the entire family uniformly. An application of this result to the study of plasma instabilities is illustra…
In this paper, we give an example of a closed unbounded operator whose square's domain and adjoint's square domain are equal and trivial. Then, we come up with an essentially self-adjoint whose square has a trivial domain.
Some preliminaries and basic facts regarding unbounded Wiener-Hopf operators (WH) are provided. WH with rational symbols are studied in detail showing that they are densely defined closed and have finite dimensional kernels and deficiency spaces. The latter spaces as well as the domains and ranges are explicitly determined. A further topic concerns semibounded WH. Expressing a semibounded WH by a product of a closable operator and its adjoint this representation allows for a natural self-adjoint extension. It is shown that it coincides with the Friedrichs extension. Polar decomposition gives r…
The Evans function is a well known tool for locating spectra of differential operators in one spatial dimension. In this paper we construct a multidimensional analogue as the modified Fredholm determinant of a ratio of Dirichlet-to-Robin operators on the boundary. This gives a tool for studying the eigenvalue counting functions of second-order elliptic operators that need not be self-adjoint. To do this we use local representation theory for meromorphic operator-valued pencils, and relate the algebraic multiplicities of eigenvalues of elliptic operators to those of the Robin-to-Robin and Robin…
We are interested in an open question raised by Fong-Tsui (dating back to the beginning of the eighties of last century) as to whether a bounded operator whose absolute value is less than the absolute value of its real part is self-adjoint. The analogue in the unbounded operators setting is also treated.
We produce a variety of odd bounded Fredholm modules and odd spectral triples on Cuntz-Krieger algebras by means of realizing these algebras as "the algebra of functions on a non-commutative space" coming from a sub shift of finite type. We show that any odd $K$-homology class can be represented by such an odd bounded Fredholm module or odd spectral triple. The odd bounded Fredholm modules that are constructed are finitely summable. The spectral triples are $θ$-summable although their bounded transform, when constructed using the sign-function, will already on the level of analytic $K$-cycles …
In the paper we consider self-adjoint partial integral operators of Fredholm type $T$ with a degenerate kernel on the space $L_2([a,b]\times[c,d]).$ Essential and discrete spectra of $T$ are described.
The primary purpose of the present paper is to investigate when relations of the types $|AB|=|A||B|$, $|A\pm B|\leq |A|+|B|$, $||A|-|B||\leq |A\pm B|$ and $|\overline{\text{Re} A}|\leq |A|$ (among others) hold in an unbounded operator setting. As interesting consequences, we obtain a characterization of (unbounded) self-adjointness as well as a characterization of invertibility for the class of unbounded normal operators.
We discuss the essential self-adjointness of wave operators, as well as the limiting absorption principle, in generalizations of asymptotically Minkowski settings. This is obtained via using a Fredholm framework for inverting the spectral family first, and then refining its conclusions to show its dense range in L^2 when acting on an appropriate subdomain.
We show that a densely defined closable operator $A$ such that the resolvent set of $A^2$ is not empty is necessarily closed. This result is then extended to the case of a polynomial $p(A)$. We also generalize a recent result by Sebestyén-Tarcsay concerning the converse of a result by J. von Neumann. Other interesting consequences are also given, one of them being a proof that if $T$ is a quasinormal (unbounded) operator such that $T^n$ is normal for some $n\geq2$, then $T$ is normal. By a recent result by Pietrzycki-Stochel, we infer that a closed subnormal operator such that $T^n$ is normal,…
Symplectic self-adjointness of Hamiltonian operator matrices is studied, which arises in symplectic elasticity and optimal control. For the cases of diagonal domain and off-diagonal domain, necessary and sufficient conditions are shown. The proofs use Frobenius-Schur fractorizations of unbounded operator matrices. Under additional assumptions, sufficient conditions based on perturbation method are obtained. The theory is applied to a problem in symplectic elasticity.
The quantum Ito formula has so far been proved for regular (bounded) quantum semimartingales We give three different extensions to classes of essentially self-adjoint (unbounded) quantum semimartingales. The first extension is to quantum semimartingales whose integrands have chaos matrices controlled by certain scalar matrices The second extension is to perturbations of classical, possibly unbounded, quantum semimartingales by bounded quantum semimartingales The third extension is obtained by perturbing an essentially self-adjoint quantum semimartingale satisfying the quantum Duhamel formula b…
General approach to the multiplication or adjoint operation of $2\times 2$ block operator matrices with unbounded entries are founded. Furthermore, criteria for self-adjointness of block operator matrices based on their entry operators are established.
This is a continuation of our papers \cite{AP2} and \cite{AP3}. In those papers we obtained estimates for finite differences $(\D_Kf)(A)=f(A+K)-f(A)$ of the order 1 and $(\D_K^mf)(A)\df\sum\limits_{j=0}^m(-1)^{m-j}(m\j)f\big(A+jK\big)$ of the order $m$ for certain classes of functions $f$, where $A$ and $K$ are bounded self-adjoint operator. In this paper we extend results of \cite{AP2} and \cite{AP3} to the case of unbounded self-adjoint operators $A$. Moreover, we obtain operator Bernstein type inequalities for entire functions of exponential type. This allows us to obtain alternative proofs…
