We define a new topology, weaker than the gap topology, on the space of selfadjoint unbounded operators on a separable Hilbert space. We show that the subspace of selfadjoint Fredholm operators represents the functor $K^1$ from the category of compact spaces to the category of abelian groups and prove a similar result for $K^0$. We define the spectral flow of a continuous path of selfadjoint Fredholm operators generalizing the approach of Booss-Bavnek--Lesch--Phillips.
We study spectral properties of one-dimensional singular perturbations of an unbounded selfadjoint operator and give criteria for the possibility to remove the whole spectrum by a perturbation of this type. A counterpart of our results for the case of bounded operators provides a complete description of compact selfadjoint operators whose rank one perturbation is a Volterra operator.
Kucerovsky's theorem provides a method for recognizing the interior Kasparov product of selfadjoint unbounded cycles. In this paper we extend Kucerovsky's theorem to the non-selfadjoint setting by replacing unbounded Kasparov modules with Hilsum's half-closed chains. On our way we show that any half-closed chain gives rise to a multitude of twisted selfadjoint unbounded cycles via a localization procedure. These unbounded modular cycles allow us to provide verifiable criteria avoiding any reference to domains of adjoints of symmetric unbounded operators.
We prove quantitative bounds on the eigenvalues of non-selfadjoint bounded and unbounded operators. We use the perturbation determinant to reduce the problem to one of studying the zeroes of a holomorphic function.
In this paper, we consider \emph{unbounded} weighted composition operators acting on Fock space, and investigate some important properties of these operators, such as $\calC$-selfadjoint (with respect to weighted composition conjugations), Hermitian, normal, cohyponormal, and invertible. In addition, the paper shows that unbounded normal weighted composition operators are contained properly in the class of $\calC$-selfadjoint operators with respect to weighted composition conjugations. The computation of the spectrum is carried out in detail.
The aim of this paper is to extend the notion of the spectral order for finite families of pairwise commuting bounded and unbounded selfadjoint operators in Hilbert space. It is shown that the multidimensional spectral order $\preccurlyeq$ is preserved by transformations represented by spectral integrals of separately increasing Borel functions on $\mathbb{R}^κ$. In particular, the $κ$-dimensional spectral order is the restriction of product of $κ$ spectral orders for selfadjoint operators. If $\mathbf{A}$ and $\mathbf{B}$ are positive $κ$-tuples of pairwise commuting selfadjoint operators, th…
Let $H_1$ and $H_2$ be selfadjoint operators or relations (multivalued operators) acting on a separable Hilbert space and assume that the inequality $H_1 \leq H_2$ holds. Then the validity of the inequalities $-H_1^{-1} \leq -H_2^{-1}$ and $H_2^{-1} \leq H_1^{-1}$ is characterized in terms of the inertia of $H_1$ and $H_2$. Such results are known for matrices and boundedly invertible operators. In the present paper those results are extended to selfadjoint, in general unbounded, not necessarily boundedly invertible, operators and, more generally, for selfadjoint relations in separable Hilbert …
In this paper we discuss the relationship between the numerical range of an extensive class of unbounded operator functions and the joint numerical range of the operator coefficients. Furthermore, we derive methods on how to find estimates of the joint numerical range. Those estimates are used to obtain explicitly computable enclosures of the numerical range of the operator function and resolvent estimates. The enclosure and upper estimate of the norm of the resolvent are optimal given the estimate of the joint numerical range.
For a wide class of pairs of unbounded selfadjoint operators with bounded commutator we construct a K-theoretical integer invariant which is continuous, is equal to zero for commuting operators and is equal to one for the pair (x, i d/dx).
We discuss Laplacians on graphs in a framework of regular Dirichlet forms. We focus on phenomena related to unboundedness of the Laplacians. This includes (failure of) essential selfadjointness, absence of essential spectrum and stochastic incompleteness.
We show that non-round boundary points of the numerical range of an unbounded operator (i.e. points where the boundary has infinite curvature) are contained in the spectrum of the operator. Moreover, we show that non-round boundary points, which are not corner points, lie in the essential spectrum. This generalizes results of Hübner, Farid, Spitkovsky and Salinas and Velasco for the case of bounded operators. We apply our results to non-selfadjoint Schrödinger operators, showing that in this case the boundary of the numerical range can be non-round only at points where it hits the essential sp…
In this article, we give a general construction of spectral triples from certain Lie group actions on unital C*-algebras. If the group G is compact and the action is ergodic, we actually obtain a real and finitely summable spectral triple which satisfies the first order condition of Connes' axioms. This provides a link between the "algebraic" existence of ergodic action and the "analytic" finite summability property of the unbounded selfadjoint operator. More generally, for compact G we carefully establish that our (symmetric) unbounded operator is essentially selfadjoint. Our results are illu…
We study spectral properties of nonselfadjoint rank one perturbations of compact selfadjoint operators. The problems under consideration include completeness of eigenvectors, relations between completeness of the perturbed operator and its adjoint, and the spectral synthesis problem. We obtain new criteria for completeness and spectral synthesis in this class as well as a series of counterexamples which show that the spectral structure of rank one perturbations is, in general, unexpectedly rich and complicated. A parallel spectral theory is developed for one-dimensional singular perturbations …
We provide sufficient and necessary conditions guaranteeing equations $(A+B)^*=A^*+B^*$ and $(AB)^*=B^*A^*$ concerning densely defined unbounded operators $A,B$ between Hilbert spaces. We also improve the perturbation theory of selfadjoint and essentially selfadjoint operators due to Nelson, Kato, Rellich, and Wüst. Our method involves the range of two-by-two matrices of the form $M_{S,T}=\left(\begin{array}{cc}\!\! I & -T\!\!\\ \!\! S& I\!\!\end{array}\right)$ that makes it possible to treat real and complex Hilbert spaces jointly.
Consider a selfadjoint unbounded operator D on a Hilbert space H and a one parameter norm continuous family of selfadjoint bounded operators {A(t)} parametrized by the real line. Then under certain conditions \cite{RS95} that include the assumption that the operators {D(t)= D+A(t)} all have discrete spectrum then the spectral flow along the path { D(t)} can be shown to be equal to the index of d/dt+D(t) when the latter is an unbounded Fredholm operator on L^2(R, H). In \cite{GLMST11} an investigation of the index=spectral flow question when the operators in the path may have some essential spe…
Our main theorem is in the generality of the axioms of Hilbert space, and the theory of unbounded operators. Consider two Hilbert spaces such that their intersection contains a fixed vector space D. It is of interest to make a precise linking between such two Hilbert spaces when it is assumed that D is dense in one of the two; but generally not in the other. No relative boundedness is assumed. Nonetheless, under natural assumptions (motivated by potential theory), we prove a theorem where a comparison between the two Hilbert spaces is made via a specific selfadjoint semibounded operator. Appli…
We consider the analytic continuation of the transfer function associated with a 2x2 operator matrix having unbounded couplings into unphysical sheets of its Riemann surface. We construct a family of non-selfadjoint operators which factorize the transfer function and reproduce certain parts of its spectrum including the nonreal (resonance) spectrum situated in the unphysical sheets neighboring the physical sheet.
We study and compare the gap and the Riesz topologies of the space of all unbounded regular operators on Hilbert C*-modules. We show that the space of all bounded adjointable operators on Hilbert C*-modules is an open dense subset of the space of all unbounded regular operators with respect to the gap topology. The restriction of the gap topology on the space of all bounded adjointable operators is equivalent with the topology which is generated by the usual operator norm. The space of regular selfadjoint Fredholm operators on Hilbert C*-modules over the C*-algebra of compact operators is path…
A general integral formula for the spectral flow of a path of unbounded selfadjoint Fredholm operators subject to certain summability conditions is derived from the interpretation of the spectral flow as a winding number.
In this paper, having introduced a convergence of a series on the root vectors in the Abel-Lidskii sense, we present a valuable application to the evolution equations. The main issue of the paper is an approach allowing us to principally broaden conditions imposed upon the right-hand side of the evolution equation in the abstract Hilbert space. In this way, we come to the definition of the function of an unbounded non-selfadjoint operator. Meanwhile, considering the main issue we involve an additional concept that is a generalization of the spectral theorem for a non-selfadjoint operator.
In general, it is a non trivial task to determine the adjoint $S^*$ of an unbounded operator $S$ acting between two Hilbert spaces. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a given operator $T$ to be identical with $S^*$. In our considerations, a central role is played by the operator matrix $M_{S,T}=\left(\begin{array}{cc} I & -T\\ S & I\end{array}\right)$. Our approach has several consequences such as characterizations of closed, normal, skew- and selfadjoint, unitary and orthogonal projection operators in real or complex Hilbert spaces. We also give a self-contained proof of the f…
In this paper, we study $un$-dual (in symbol, $\ud{E}$) of Banach lattice $E$ and compare it with topological dual $E^*$. If $E^*$ has order continuous norm, then $E^* = \ud{E}$. We introduce and study weakly unbounded norm topology ($wun$-topology) on Banach lattices and compare it with weak topology and $uaw$-topology. In the final, we introduce and study $wun$-Dunford-Pettis opertors from a Banach lattice $E$ into Banach space $X$ and we investigate some of its properties and its relationships with others known operators.
In this paper, we continue the investigation of topological properties of unbounded norm (un-)topology in normed lattices. We characterize separability and second countability of un-topology in terms of properties of the underlying normed lattice. We apply our results to prove that an order continuous Banach function space $X$ over a semi-finite measure space is separable if and only if it has a $σ$-finite carrier and is separable with respect to the topology of local convergence in measure. We also address the question when a normed lattice is a normal space with respect to the un-topology.
The Kasparov absorption (or stabilization) theorem states that any countably generated Hilbert C*-module is isomorphic to a direct summand in the standard module of square summable sequences in the base C*-algebra. In this paper, this result will be generalized by incorporating a densely defined derivation on the base C*-algebra. This leads to a differentiable version of the Kasparov absorption theorem. The extra compatibility assumptions needed are minimal: It will only be required that there exists a sequence of generators with mutual inner products in the domain of the derivation. The diffe…
We introduce a new topology, weaker than the gap topology, on the space of selfadjoint operators affiliated to a semifinite von Neumann algebra. We define the real-valued spectral flow for a continuous path of selfadjoint Breuer-Fredholm operators in terms of a generalization of the winding number. We compare our definition with Phillips' analytical definition and derive integral formulas for the spectral flow for certain paths of unbounded operators with common domain, generalizing those of Carey--Phillips. Furthermore we prove the homotopy invariance of the real-valued index. As an example w…
In this article we investigate the disjointly non-singular (DNS) operators. Following [8] we say that an operator $T$ from a Banach lattice $F$ into a Banach space $E$ is DNS, if no restriction of $T$ to a subspace generated by a disjoint sequence is strictly singular. We partially answer a question from [8] by showing that this class of operators forms an open subset of $L\left(F,E\right)$ as soon as $F$ is order continuous. Moreover, we show that in this case $T$ is DNS if and only if the norm topology is the minimal topology which is simultaneously stronger than the unbounded norm topology …
In 1987, I. Labuda proved a general representation theorem that, as a special case, shows that the topology of local convergence in measure is the minimal topology on Orlicz spaces and $L_{\infty}$. Minimal topologies connect with the recent, and actively studied, subject of "unbounded convergences". In fact, a Hausdorff locally solid topology $τ$ on a vector lattice $X$ is minimal iff it is Lebesgue and the $τ$ and unbounded $τ$-topologies agree. In this paper, we study metrizability, submetrizability, and local boundedness of the unbounded topology, $uτ$, associated to $τ$ on $X$. Regarding …
Several recent papers investigated unbounded and statistical versions of order convergence and topology convergence in locally solid Riesz space. In this papers, we study the statistical unbounded order and topology convergence in Riesz spaces and Banach lattices. In particular, we study the relationship of those convergence and characterize order continuous, KB, reflexive Banach lattices in terms of these convergence.
A net $(x_α)$ in a Banach lattice $X$ is said to un-converge to a vector $x$ if $\bigl\lVert\lvert x_α-x\rvert\wedge u\bigr\rVert\to 0$ for every $u\in X_+$. In this paper, we investigate un-topology, i.e., the topology that corresponds to un-convergence. We show that un-topology agrees with the norm topology iff $X$ has a strong unit. Un-topology is metrizable iff $X$ has a quasi-interior point. Suppose that $X$ is order continuous, then un-topology is locally convex iff $X$ is atomic. An order continuous Banach lattice $X$ is a KB-space iff its closed unit ball $B_X$ is un-complete. For a Ba…
In this paper, we generalize the concept of unbounded norm (un) convergence: let $X$ be a normed lattice and $Y$ a vector lattice such that $X$ is an order dense ideal in $Y$; we say that a net $(y_α)$ un-converges to $y$ in $Y$ with respect to $X$ if $\Bigl\lVert\lvert y_α-y\rvert \wedge x\Bigr\rVert\to 0$ for every $x\in X_+$. We extend several known results about un-convergence and un-topology to this new setting. We consider the special case when $Y$ is the universal completion of $X$. If $Y=L_0(μ)$, the space of all $μ$-measurable functions, and $X$ is an order continuous Banach function …
We study properties of the topological space of composition operators on the Banach algebra of bounded functions on an unbounded, locally finite metric space in the operator norm topology and essential norm topology. Moreover, we characterize the compactness of differences of two such composition operators.
A net $(x_γ)_{γ\inΓ}$ in a locally solid Riesz space $(X,τ)$ is said to be unbounded $τ$-convergent to $x$ if $|x_γ-x|\wedge u\mathop{\oversetτ{\longrightarrow}} 0$ for all $u\in X_+$. We recall that there is a locally solid linear topology $\mathfrak{u}τ$ on $X$ such that unbounded $τ$-convergence coincides with $\mathfrak{u}τ$-convergence, and moreover, $\mathfrak{u}τ$ is characterised as the weakest locally solid linear topology which coincides with $τ$ on all order bounded subsets. It is with this motivation that we introduce, for a uniform lattice $(L,u)$, the weakest lattice uniformity $…
In this paper, we introduce and study a new classes of operators, named AM-unbounded norm compact operators. We study the the basic properties of the new operator and we investigate the lattice-order and topology property of the operator space of AM-unbounded norm compact operator.
Let $x_α$ be a net in a locally solid vector lattice $(X,τ)$; we say that $x_α$ is unbounded $τ$-convergent to a vector $x\in X$ if $\lvert x_α-x \rvert\wedge w \xrightarrowτ 0$ for all $w\in X_+$. In this paper, we study general properties of unbounded $τ$-convergence (shortly, $uτ$-convergence). $uτ$-Convergence generalizes unbounded norm convergence and unbounded absolute weak convergence in normed lattices that have been investigated recently. Besides, we introduce $uτ$-topology and study briefly metrizabililty and completeness of this topology.
Given a C*-algebra A with a semicontinuous semifinite trace tau acting on the Hilbert space H, we define the family R of bounded Riemann measurable elements w.r.t. tau as a suitable closure, a la Dedekind, of A, in analogy with one of the classical characterizations of Riemann measurable functions, and show that R is a C*-algebra, and tau extends to a semicontinuous semifinite trace on R. Then, unbounded Riemann measurable operators are defined as the closed operators on H which are affiliated to A'' and can be approximated in measure by operators in R, in analogy with unbounded Riemann integr…
We investigate the Dolbeault operator on a pair of pants, i.e., an elementary cobordism between a circle and the disjoint union of two circles. This operator induces a canonical selfadjoint Dirac operator $D_t$ on each regular level set $C_t$ of a fixed Morse function defining this cobordism. We show that as we approach the critical level set $C_0$ from above and from below these operators converge in the gap topology to (different) selfadjoint operators $D_\pm$ that we describe explicitly. We also relate the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index of the Dolbeault operator on the cobordism to the spectral…
Jordan operator algebras are norm-closed spaces of operators on a Hilbert space with $a^2 \in A$ for all $a \in A$. We study noncommutative topology, noncommutative peak sets and peak interpolation, and hereditary subalgebras of Jordan operator algebras. We show that Jordan operator algebras present perhaps the most general setting for a `full' noncommutative topology in the C*-algebraic sense of Akemann, L. G. Brown, Pedersen, etc, and as modified for not necessarily selfadjoint algebras by the authors with Read, Hay and other coauthors. Our breakthrough relies in part on establishing several…
Generally-unbounded infinitesimal generators are studied in the context of operator topology. Beginning with the definition of seminorm, the concept of locally convex topological vector space is introduced as well as the concept of Fr{é}chet space. These are the basic concepts for defining an operator topology. Consequently, by associating the topological concepts with the convergence of sequence, a suitable mathematical framework for obtaining the logarithmic representation of infinitesimal generators is presented.
The wave operators $W_\pm(H_1,H_0)$ of two selfadjoint operators $H_0$ and $H_1$ are analyzed at asymptotic spectral values. Sufficient conditions for $\|(W_\pm(H_1,H_0)-P_{1}^\mathrm{ac}P_{0}^\mathrm{ac})f(H_0)\| <\infty$ are given, where $P_{j}^\mathrm{ac}$ projects onto the subspace of absolutely continuous spectrum of $H_j$ and $f$ is an unbounded function ($f$-boundedness), both in the case of trace-class perturbations and in terms of the high-energy behaviour of the boundary values of the resolvent of $H_0$ (smooth method). Examples include $f$-boundedness for the perturbed polyharmonic …
We study the gap (= "projection norm" = "graph distance") topology of the space of (not necessarily bounded) self--adjoint Fredholm operators in a separable Hilbert space by the Cayley transform and direct methods. In particular, we show that the space is connected contrary to the bounded case. Moreover, we present a rigorous definition of spectral flow of a path of such operators (actually alternative but mutually equivalent definitions) and prove the homotopy invariance. As an example, we discuss operator curves on manifolds with boundary.
We study two extension problems, and their interconnections: (i) extension of positive definite (p.d.) continuous functions defined on subsets in locally compact groups $G$; and (ii) (in case of Lie groups $G$) representations of the associated Lie algebras $La\left(G\right)$, i.e., representations of $La\left(G\right)$ by unbounded skew-Hermitian operators acting in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\mathscr{H}_{F}$ (RKHS). Our analysis is non-trivial even if $G=\mathbb{R}^{n}$, and even if $n=1$. If $G=\mathbb{R}^{n}$, (ii), we are concerned with finding systems of strongly commuting selfa…
In this note, we consider the space of all continuous operators with respect to the unbounded topology on locally solid vector lattices. We investigate whether this space forms a band. In addition, we look into some situations under which, the modulus of a continuous operator has the same property. Some examples are given to make the context more understandable.
