6pp, a selfcontained, short and simple proof of the Freholm alternative and of a characterization of Fredholm operators. The paper is written for broad audience. It is of expository nature and does not contain new results
Let $A$ be a linear bounded operator in a Hilbert space $H$, $N(A)$ and $R(A)$ its null-space and range, and $A^*$ its adjoint. The operator $A$ is called Fredholm iff $dim N(A)= dim N(A^*):=n<\infty$ and $R(A)$ and $R(A^*)$ are closed subspaces of $H$.
A simple and short proof is given of the following known result: $A$ is Fredholm iff $A=B+F$, where $B$ is an isomorphism and $F$ is a finite-rank operator. The proof consists in reduction to a finite-dimensional linear algebraic system which is equivalent to the equation $Au=f$ in the case of Fredholm operators.
In this expository note, we present a simple proof of the Fredholm Alternative for compact operators that are norm limits of finite rank operators. We also prove a Fredholm Alternative for pseudodifferential operators of order < 0.
In this paper we study the existence of solutions to the following generalized nonlinear two-parameter problem \begin{equation*} a(u, v) \; =\; λ\, b(u, m) + μ\, m(u, v) + \varepsilon\, F(u, v), \end{equation*} for a triple $(a, b, m)$ of continuous, symmetric bilinear forms on a real separable Hilbert space $V$ and nonlinear form $F$. This problem is a natural abstraction of nonlinear problems that occur for a large class of differential operators, various elliptic pde's with nonlinearities in either the differential equation and/or the boundary conditions being a special subclass. First, a F…
We apply a recent result of Borichev-Golinskii-Kupin on the Blaschke-type conditions for zeros of analytic functions on the complex plane with a cut along the positive semi-axis to the problem of the eigenvalues distribution of the Fredholm-type analytic operator-valued functions.
One may trace the idea that spectral flow should be given as the integral of a one form back to the 1974 Vancouver ICM address of I.M. Singer. Our main theorem gives analytic formulae for the spectral flow along a norm differentiable path of self-adjoint bounded Breuer-Fredholm operators in a semi-finite von Neumann algebra. These formulae have a geometric interpretation which derives from the proof. Namely we define a family of Banach submanifolds of all bounded self-adjoint Breuer-Fredholm operators and on each submanifold define global one forms whose integral on a norm differentiable path …
In this work characterizations of Fredholm pairs and chains of Hilbert space operators are given. Following a well-known idea of several variable operator theory in Hilbert spaces, the aforementioned objects are characterized in terms of Fredholm linear and bounded maps. Furthermore, as an application of the main results of this work, direct proofs of the stability properties of Fredholm pairs and chains in Hilbert spaces are obtained.
In this paper we prove sufficient conditions for the Fredholm property of a non-smooth pseudodifferential operator $P$ which symbol is in a Hölder space with respect to the spatial variable. As a main ingredient for the proof we use a suitable symbol-smoothing.
We study the gap (= "projection norm" = "graph distance") topology of the space of (not necessarily bounded) self--adjoint Fredholm operators in a separable Hilbert space by the Cayley transform and direct methods. In particular, we show that the space is connected contrary to the bounded case. Moreover, we present a rigorous definition of spectral flow of a path of such operators (actually alternative but mutually equivalent definitions) and prove the homotopy invariance. As an example, we discuss operator curves on manifolds with boundary.
In this paper we show the invariance of the Fredholm index of non-smooth pseudodifferential operators with coefficients in Hölder spaces. By means of this invariance we improve previous spectral invariance results for non-smooth pseudodifferential operators $P$ with coefficients in Hölder spaces. For this purpose we approximate $P$ with smooth pseudodifferential operators and use a spectral invariance result of smooth pseudodifferential operators. Then we get the spectral invariance result in analogy to a proof of the spectral invariance result for non-smooth differential operators by Rabier.
We prove the formula for the traces of certain class of operators in bosonic and fermionic Fock spaces. Vertex operators belong to this class. Traces of vertex operators can be used for calculation of correlation functions and formfactors of integrable models (XXZ, Sine-Gordon, etc.), that is why we are interested in this problem. Also we show that Fredholm's minor and determinant can be expressed by such traces. We obtain a short proof of the Fredholm's formula for the solution of an integral equation. Analogue of Fredholm's formula in terms of permanents is obtained.
We classify the homotopy classes of proper Fredholm maps from an infinite dimensional Hilbert manifold into its model space in terms of a suitable version of framed cobordism. Our construction is an alternative approach to the classification introduced by Elworthy and Tromba in 1970 and does not make use of further structures on the ambient manifold, such as Fredholm structures. In the special case of index zero, we obtain a complete classification involving the Caccioppoli-Smale mod 2 degree and the absolute value of the oriented degree.
In analogy to what happens in finite dimensions we state the Normal Form Theorem for k-singularities, introduced in the previous paper of the series. By means of that we study the local behaviour near a singularity i.e. we deduce local results of existence and multiplicity of solutions for the equation F(x) = y where F is a 0-Fredholm map and x belongs to a suitable neighbourhood of a singular point x_(o), once x_(o) is identified as one of the three kinds of singularities defined in the first paper. To this end we also start to seek alternative strategies for the determination of the type of …
We consider homoclinic solutions for Hamiltonian systems in symplectic Hilbert spaces and generalise spectral flow formulas that were proved by Pejsachowicz and the author in finite dimensions some years ago. Roughly speaking, our main theorem relates the spectra of infinite dimensional Hamiltonian systems under homoclinic boundary conditions to intersections of their stable and unstable spaces. Our proof has some interest in its own. Firstly, we extend a celebrated theorem by Cappell, Lee and Miller about the classical Maslov index in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ to symplectic Hilbert spaces. Secondly, …
We study the analog of semi-separable integral kernels in $\cH$ of the type {equation*} K(x,x')={cases} F_1(x)G_1(x'), & a<x'< x< b, \\ F_2(x)G_2(x'), & a<x<x'<b, {cases} {equation*} where $-\infty\leq a<b\leq \infty$, and for a.e.\ $x \in (a,b)$, $F_j (x) \in \cB_2(\cH_j,\cH)$ and $G_j(x) \in \cB_2(\cH,\cH_j)$ such that $F_j(\cdot)$ and $G_j(\cdot)$ are uniformly measurable, and {equation*} \|F_j(\cdot)\|_{\cB_2(\cH_j,\cH)} \in L^2((a,b)), \; \|G_j (\cdot)\|_{\cB_2(\cH,\cH_j)} \in L^2((a,b)), \quad j=1,2, {equation*} with $\cH$ and $\cH_j$, $j=1,2$, complex, separable Hilbert spaces. Assuming…
We give alternative proofs to (block case versions of) some formulas for Toeplitz and Fredholm determinants established recently by the authors of the title. Our proof of the Borodin-Okounkov formula is very short and direct. The proof of the Baik-Deift-Rains formulas is based on standard manipulations with Wiener-Hopf factorizations.

Let $Γ$ be a compact group acting on a smooth, compact manifold $M$, let $P \in ψ^m(M; E_0, E_1)$ be a $Γ$-invariant, classical pseudodifferential operator acting between sections of two equivariant vector bundles $E_i \to M$, $i = 0,1$, and let $α$ be an irreducible representation of the group $Γ$. Then $P$ induces a map $π_α(P) : H^s(M; E_0)_α\to H^{s-m}(M; E_1)_α$ between the $α$-isotypical components of the corresponding Sobolev spaces of sections. When $Γ$ is finite, we explicitly characterize the operators $P$ for which the map $π_α(P)$ is Fredholm in terms of the principal symbol of $P$…
We answer the question of when an invariant pseudodifferential operator is Fredholm on a fixed, given isotypical component. More precisely, let $Γ$ be a compact group acting on a smooth, compact, manifold $M$ without boundary and let $P \in ψ^m(M; E_0, E_1)$ be a $Γ$-invariant, classical, pseudodifferential operator acting between sections of two $Γ$-equivariant vector bundles $E_0$ and $E_1$. Let $α$ be an irreducible representation of the group $Γ$. Then $P$ induces by restriction a map $π_α(P) : H^s(M; E_0)_α\to H^{s-m}(M; E_1)_α$ between the $α$-isotypical components of the corresponding S…
This note is about the topology of the path space of linear Fredholm operators on a real Hilbert space. Fitzpatrick and Pejsachowicz introduced the parity of such a path, based on the Leray-Schauder degree of a path of parametrices. Here an alternative analytic approach is presented which reduces the parity to the ${\mathbb Z}_2$-valued spectral flow of an associated path of chiral skew-adjoints. Furthermore the related notion of ${\mathbb Z}_2$-index of a Fredholm pair of chiral complex structures is introduced and connected to the parity of a suitable path. Several non-trivial examples are p…
This is an expository article. It discusses an approach to hypoelliptic Fredholm index theory based on noncommutative methods (groupoids, C*-algebras, K-theory). The paper starts with an explicit index theorem for scalar second order differential operators on 3-manifolds that are Fredholm but not elliptic. This low-brow index formula is expressed in terms of winding numbers. We then proceed to show how this theorem is a special case of a much more general index theorem for subelliptic operators on contact manifolds. Finally we discuss the noncommutative topology that is employed in the proof o…
We present two alternative proofs of Mandrekar's theorem, which states that an invariant subspaces of the Hardy space on the bidisc is of Beurling type precisely when the shifts satisfy a doubly commuting condition. The first proof uses properties of Toeplitz operators to derive a formula for the reproducing kernel of certain shift invariant subspaces, which can then be used to characterize them. The second proof relies on the reproducing property in order to show that the reproducing kernel at the origin must generate the entire shift invariant subspace.
In 2010, Invent. Math., Ershov and Jaikin-Zapirain proved Kazhdan's property (T) for elementary groups. This expository article focuses on presenting an alternative simpler proof of that. Unlike the original one, our proof supplies no estimate of Kazhdan constants. It may be regarded as a specific example of the results in the paper "Upgrading fixed points without bounded generation" (arXiv:1505.06728, forthcoming version) by the author.
