We construct operators which factorize the transfer function associated with a non-self-adjoint 2x2 operator matrix whose diagonal entries can have overlapping spectra and whose off-diagonal entries are unbounded operators.
This paper addresses two different but related questions regarding an unbounded symmetric tridiagonal operator: its self-adjointness and the approximation of its spectrum by the eigenvalues of its finite truncations. The sufficient conditions given in both cases improve and generalize previously known results. It turns out that, not only self-adjointness helps to study limit points of eigenvalues of truncated operators, but the analysis of such limit points is a key help to prove self-adjointness. Several examples show the advantages of these new results compared with previous ones. Besides, a…
The problem of approximating the discrete spectra of families of self-adjoint operators that are merely strongly continuous is addressed. It is well-known that the spectrum need not vary continuously (as a set) under strong perturbations. However, it is shown that under an additional compactness assumption the spectrum does vary continuously, and a family of symmetric finite-dimensional approximations is constructed. An important feature of these approximations is that they are valid for the entire family uniformly. An application of this result to the study of plasma instabilities is illustra…
We study the spectrum of unbounded J-self-adjoint block operator matrices. In particular, we prove enclosures for the spectrum, provide a sufficient condition for the spectrum being real and derive variational principles for certain real eigenvalues even in the presence of non-real spectrum. The latter lead to lower and upper bounds and asymptotic estimates for eigenvalues.
This is a continuation of our papers \cite{AP2} and \cite{AP3}. In those papers we obtained estimates for finite differences $(\D_Kf)(A)=f(A+K)-f(A)$ of the order 1 and $(\D_K^mf)(A)\df\sum\limits_{j=0}^m(-1)^{m-j}(m\j)f\big(A+jK\big)$ of the order $m$ for certain classes of functions $f$, where $A$ and $K$ are bounded self-adjoint operator. In this paper we extend results of \cite{AP2} and \cite{AP3} to the case of unbounded self-adjoint operators $A$. Moreover, we obtain operator Bernstein type inequalities for entire functions of exponential type. This allows us to obtain alternative proofs…
Given a locally finite simple graph so that its degree is not bounded, every self-adjoint realization of the adjacency matrix is unbounded from above. In this note we give an optimal condition to ensure it is also unbounded from below. We also consider the case of weighted graphs. We discuss the question of self-adjoint extensions and prove an optimal criterium.
Let $f$ be a function on ${\Bbb R}^2$ in the inhomogeneous Besov space $B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^2)$. For a pair $(A,B)$ of not necessarily bounded and not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators, we define the function $f(A,B)$ of $A$ and $B$ as a densely defined linear operator. We show that if $1\le p\le2$, $(A_1,B_1)$ and $(A_2,B_2)$ are pairs of not necessarily bounded and not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators such that both $A_1-A_2$ and $B_1-B_2$ belong to the Schatten--von Neumann class $\boldsymbol{S}_p$ and $f$ is in the above inhomogeneous Besov space, then the follow…
We consider the analytic continuation of the transfer function associated with a 2x2 operator matrix having unbounded couplings into unphysical sheets of its Riemann surface. We construct a family of non-selfadjoint operators which factorize the transfer function and reproduce certain parts of its spectrum including the nonreal (resonance) spectrum situated in the unphysical sheets neighboring the physical sheet.
For a pair $(A,B)$ of not necessarily bounded and not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators and for a function $f$ on the Euclidean space ${\Bbb R}^2$ that belongs to the inhomogeneous Besov class $B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^2)$, we define the function $f(A,B)$ of these operators as a densely defined operator. We consider the problem of estimating the functions $f(A,B)$ under perturbations of the pair $(A,B)$. It is established that if $1\le p\le2$, and $(A_1,B_1)$ and $(A_2,B_2)$ are pairs of not necessarily bounded and not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators such that the operat…
If $u\mapsto A(u)$ is a $C^{0,α}$-mapping, for $0< α\le 1$, having as values unbounded self-adjoint operators with compact resolvents and common domain of definition, parametrized by $u$ in an (even infinite dimensional) space, then any continuous (in $u$) arrangement of the eigenvalues of $A(u)$ is indeed $C^{0,α}$ in $u$.
If $A(t)$ is a $C^{1,\al}$-curve of unbounded self-adjoint operators with compact resolvents and common domain of definition, then the eigenvalues can be parameterized $C^1$ in $t$. If $A$ is $C^\infty$ then the eigenvalues can be parameterized twice differentiable.
We examine semiclassical magnetic Schrödinger operators with complex electric potentials. Under suitable conditions on the magnetic and electric potentials, we prove a resolvent estimate for spectral parameters in an unbounded parabolic neighborhood of the imaginary axis.
One may trace the idea that spectral flow should be given as the integral of a one form back to the 1974 Vancouver ICM address of I.M. Singer. Our main theorem gives analytic formulae for the spectral flow along a norm differentiable path of self-adjoint bounded Breuer-Fredholm operators in a semi-finite von Neumann algebra. These formulae have a geometric interpretation which derives from the proof. Namely we define a family of Banach submanifolds of all bounded self-adjoint Breuer-Fredholm operators and on each submanifold define global one forms whose integral on a norm differentiable path …
We consider the difference $f(H_1)-f(H_0)$ for self-adjoint operators $H_0$ and $H_1$ acting in a Hilbert space. We establish a new class of estimates for the operator norm and the Schatten class norms of this difference. Our estimates utilise ideas of scattering theory and involve conditions on $H_0$ and $H_1$ in terms of the Kato smoothness. They allow for a much wider class of functions $f$ (including some unbounded ones) than previously available results do. As an important technical tool, we propose a new notion of Schatten class valued smoothness and develop a new framework for double op…
Let $t\mapsto A(t)$ for $t\in T$ be a $C^M$-mapping with values unbounded operators with compact resolvents and common domain of definition which are self-adjoint or normal. Here $C^M$ stands for $C^\om$ (real analytic), a quasianalytic or non-quasianalytic Denjoy-Carleman class, $C^\infty$, or a Hölder continuity class $C^{0,\al}$. The parameter domain $T$ is either $\mathbb R$ or $\mathbb R^n$ or an infinite dimensional convenient vector space. We prove and review results on $C^M$-dependence on $t$ of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of $A(t)$.
Given an infinite graph $G$ on countably many vertices, and a closed, infinite set $Λ$ of real numbers, we prove the existence of an unbounded self-adjoint operator whose graph is $G$ and whose spectrum is $Λ$.
In this note self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators are investigated by using the abstract technique of quasi boundary triples and their Weyl functions. The main result is an extension of Theorem 2.6 in [5] which provides sufficient conditions on the parameter in the boundary space to induce self-adjoint realizations. As an example self-adjoint Robin Laplacians on the half-space with boundary conditions involving an unbounded coefficient are considered.
We study spectral properties of unbounded Jacobi matrices with periodically modulated or blended entries. Our approach is based on uniform asymptotic analysis of generalized eigenvectors. We determine when the studied operators are self-adjoint. We identify regions where the point spectrum has no accumulation points. This allows us to completely describe the essential spectrum of these operators.
We study asymptotics of generalized eigenvectors associated with Jacobi matrices. Under weak conditions on the coefficients we identify when the matrices are self-adjoint and show that they satisfy strong non-subordinacy condition.
Motivated by potential theory on discrete spaces, we study a family of unbounded Hermitian operators in Hilbert space which generalize the usual graph-theoretic discrete Laplacian. These operators are discrete analogues of the classical conformal Laplacians and Hamiltonians from statistical mechanics. For an infinite discrete set $X$, we consider operators acting on Hilbert spaces of functions on $X$, and their representations as infinite matrices; the focus is on $\ell^2(X)$, and the energy space $\mathcal{H}_{\mathcal E}$. In particular, we prove that these operators are always essentially s…
For a very general class of unbounded self-adjoint operator function we prove upper bounds for eigenvalues which lie within arbitrary gaps of the essential spectrum. These upper bounds are given by triple variations. Furthermore, we find conditions which imply that a point is in the resolvent set. For norm resolvent continuous operator functions we show that the variational inequality becomes an equality.
The spectral properties of non-self-adjoint extensions $A_{[B]}$ of a symmetric operator in a Hilbert space are studied with the help of ordinary and quasi boundary triples and the corresponding Weyl functions. These extensions are given in terms of abstract boundary conditions involving an (in general non-symmetric) boundary operator $B$. In the abstract part of this paper, sufficient conditions for sectoriality and m-sectoriality as well as sufficient conditions for $A_{[B]}$ to have a non-empty resolvent set are provided in terms of the parameter $B$ and the Weyl function. Special attention…
A famous theorem due to Weyl and von Neumann asserts that two bounded self-adjoint operators are unitarily equivalent modulo the compacts, if and only if their essential spectrum agree. The above theorem does not hold for unbounded operators. Nevertheless, there exist closed subsets $M$ of $\mathbb{R}$ on which the Weyl--von Neumann Theorem hold: all (not necessarily bounded) self-adjoint operators with essential spectrum $M$ are unitarily equivalent modulo the compacts. In this paper, we determine exactly which $M$ satisfies this property.
In this paper the spectral and scattering properties of a family of self-adjoint Dirac operators in $L^2(Ω; \mathbb{C}^4)$, where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ is either a bounded or an unbounded domain with a compact $C^2$-smooth boundary, are studied in a systematic way. These operators can be viewed as the natural relativistic counterpart of Laplacians with Robin boundary conditions. Among the Dirac operators treated here is also the so-called MIT bag operator, which has been used by physicists and more recently was discussed in the mathematical literature. Our approach is based on abstract bound…
We prove the absence of eigenvaues of the three-dimensional Dirac operator with non-Hermitian potentials in unbounded regions of the complex plane under smallness conditions on the potentials in Lebesgue spaces. Our sufficient conditions are quantitative and easily checkable.
We study the gap (= "projection norm" = "graph distance") topology of the space of (not necessarily bounded) self--adjoint Fredholm operators in a separable Hilbert space by the Cayley transform and direct methods. In particular, we show that the space is connected contrary to the bounded case. Moreover, we present a rigorous definition of spectral flow of a path of such operators (actually alternative but mutually equivalent definitions) and prove the homotopy invariance. As an example, we discuss operator curves on manifolds with boundary.
In this paper we prove the spectral theorem for quaternionic unbounded normal operators using the notion of $S$-spectrum. The proof technique consists of first establishing a spectral theorem for quaternionic bounded normal operators and then using a transformation which maps a quaternionic unbounded normal operator to a quaternionic bounded normal operator. With this paper we complete the foundation of spectral analysis of quaternionic operators. The $S$-spectrum has been introduced to define the quaternionic functional calculus but it turns out to be the correct object also for the spectral …
We present a survey of some recent results concerning the location and the Weyl formula for the complex eigenvalues of two non self-adjoint operators. We study the eigenvalues of the generator $G$ of the contraction semigroup $e^{tG}, \: t \geq 0,$ related to the wave equation in an unbounded domain $Ω$ with dissipative boundary conditions on $\partial Ω$. Also one examines the interior transmission eigenvalues (ITE) in a bounded domain $K$ obtaining a Weyl formula with remainder for the counting function $N(r)$ of complex (ITE). The analysis is based on a semi-classical approach.
Weyl-von Neumann Theorem asserts that two bounded self-adjoint operators $A,B$ on a Hilbert space $H$ are unitarily equivalent modulo compacts, i.e., $uAu^*+K=B$ for some unitary $u\in \mathcal{U}(H)$ and compact self-adjoint operator $K$, if and only if $A$ and $B$ have the same essential spectra: $σ_{\rm{ess}}(A)=σ_{\rm{ess}}(B)$. In this paper we consider to what extent the above Weyl-von Neumann's result can(not) be extended to unbounded operators using descriptive set theory. We show that if $H$ is separable infinite-dimensional, this equivalence relation for bounded self-adjoin operators…
Given a self-adjoint involution J on a Hilbert space H, we consider a J-self-adjoint operator L=A+V on H where A is a possibly unbounded self-adjoint operator commuting with J and V a bounded J-self-adjoint operator anti-commuting with J. We establish optimal estimates on the position of the spectrum of L with respect to the spectrum of A and we obtain norm bounds on the operator angles between maximal uniformly definite reducing subspaces of the unperturbed operator A and the perturbed operator L. All the bounds are given in terms of the norm of V and the distances between pairs of disjoint s…
We construct higher order spectral shift functions, which represent the remainders of Taylor-type approximations for the value of a function at a perturbed self-adjoint operator by derivatives of the function at an initial unbounded operator. In the particular cases of the zero and the first order approximations, the corresponding spectral shift functions have been constructed by M. G. Krein and L. S. Koplienko, respectively. The higher order spectral shift functions obtained in this paper can be expressed recursively via the lower order ones, in particular, Krein's and Koplienko's spectral sh…
We prove and apply two theorems: First, a quantitative, scale-free unique continuation estimate for functions in a spectral subspace of a Schrödinger operator on a bounded or unbounded domain, second, a perturbation and lifting estimate for edges of the essential spectrum of a self-adjoint operator under a semi-definite perturbation. These two results are combined to obtain lower and upper Lipschitz bounds on the function parametrizing locally a chosen edge of the essential spectrum of a Schrödinger operator in dependence of a coupling constant. Analogous estimates for eigenvalues, possibly in…
We present pretty detailed spectral analysis of Jacobi matrices with periodically modulated entries in the case when $0$ lies on the soft edge of the spectrum of the corresponding periodic Jacobi matrix. In particular, we show that the studied operators are always self-adjoint irrespective of the modulated sequence. Moreover, if the growth of the modulated sequence is superlinear, then the spectrum of the considered operators is always discrete. Finally, we study regular perturbations of this class in the linear and the sublinear cases. We impose conditions assuring that the spectrum is absolu…
In the framework of inverse linear problems on infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, we prove the convergence of the conjugate gradient iterates to an exact solution to the inverse problem in the most general case where the self-adjoint, non-negative operator is unbounded and with minimal, technically unavoidable assumptions on the initial guess of the iterative algorithm. The convergence is proved to always hold in the Hilbert space norm (error convergence), as well as at other levels of regularity (energy norm, residual, etc.) depending on the regularity of the iterates. We also discuss, both …
We survey the notion of the spectral shift function of a pair of self-adjoint operators and recent progress on its connection with the Witten index. We also describe a proof of Krein's Trace Theorem that does not use complex analysis [53] and develop its extension to general $σ$-finite von Neumann algebras $\mathcal{M}$ of type II and unbounded perturbations from the predual of $\mathcal{M}$. We also discuss the connection between the theory of the spectral shift function and index theory for certain model operators. We start by introducing various definitions of the Witten index, (an extensio…
In this note we consider the self-adjoint Schrödinger operator $\mathsf{A}_α$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, $d\geq 2$, with a $δ$-potential supported on a Lipschitz hypersurface $Σ\subseteq\mathbb{R}^d$ of strength $α\in L^p(Σ)+L^\infty(Σ)$. We show the uniqueness of the ground state and, under some additional conditions on the coefficient $α$ and the hypersurface $Σ$, we determine the essential spectrum of $\mathsf{A}_α$. In the special case that $Σ$ is a hyperplane we obtain a Birman-Schwinger principle with a relativistic Schrödinger operator as Birman-Schwinger operator. As an application we pro…
