If $u\mapsto A(u)$ is a $C^{0,α}$-mapping, for $0< α\le 1$, having as values unbounded self-adjoint operators with compact resolvents and common domain of definition, parametrized by $u$ in an (even infinite dimensional) space, then any continuous (in $u$) arrangement of the eigenvalues of $A(u)$ is indeed $C^{0,α}$ in $u$.
We study spectral properties of one-dimensional singular perturbations of an unbounded selfadjoint operator and give criteria for the possibility to remove the whole spectrum by a perturbation of this type. A counterpart of our results for the case of bounded operators provides a complete description of compact selfadjoint operators whose rank one perturbation is a Volterra operator.
Let $t\mapsto A(t)$ for $t\in T$ be a $C^M$-mapping with values unbounded operators with compact resolvents and common domain of definition which are self-adjoint or normal. Here $C^M$ stands for $C^\om$ (real analytic), a quasianalytic or non-quasianalytic Denjoy-Carleman class, $C^\infty$, or a Hölder continuity class $C^{0,\al}$. The parameter domain $T$ is either $\mathbb R$ or $\mathbb R^n$ or an infinite dimensional convenient vector space. We prove and review results on $C^M$-dependence on $t$ of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of $A(t)$.
If $A(t)$ is a $C^{1,\al}$-curve of unbounded self-adjoint operators with compact resolvents and common domain of definition, then the eigenvalues can be parameterized $C^1$ in $t$. If $A$ is $C^\infty$ then the eigenvalues can be parameterized twice differentiable.
A regular symmetric operator on a Hilbert module is self-adjoint whenever there exists a suitable approximate identity. We say an operator is 'locally bounded' if the composition of the operator with each element in the approximate identity is bounded. We prove that the perturbation of a regular self-adjoint operator by a locally bounded symmetric operator is again regular and self-adjoint. We use this result to show that the Kasparov class represented by an unbounded Kasparov module is stable under locally bounded perturbations. As an application, we show that we obtain a converse to the 'dou…
We consider dynamical semigroups with unbounded Kossakowski-Lindblad-Davies generators which are related to evolution of an open system with a tuned repeated harmonic perturbation. Our main result is the proof of existence of uniquely determined minimal trace-preserving strongly continuous dynamical semigroups on the space of density matrices. The corresponding dual W *-dynamical system is shown to be unital quasi-free and completely positive automorphisms of the CCR-algebra. We also comment on the action of dynamical semigroups on quasi-free states.
The problem of approximating the discrete spectra of families of self-adjoint operators that are merely strongly continuous is addressed. It is well-known that the spectrum need not vary continuously (as a set) under strong perturbations. However, it is shown that under an additional compactness assumption the spectrum does vary continuously, and a family of symmetric finite-dimensional approximations is constructed. An important feature of these approximations is that they are valid for the entire family uniformly. An application of this result to the study of plasma instabilities is illustra…
For a pair $(A,B)$ of not necessarily bounded and not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators and for a function $f$ on the Euclidean space ${\Bbb R}^2$ that belongs to the inhomogeneous Besov class $B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^2)$, we define the function $f(A,B)$ of these operators as a densely defined operator. We consider the problem of estimating the functions $f(A,B)$ under perturbations of the pair $(A,B)$. It is established that if $1\le p\le2$, and $(A_1,B_1)$ and $(A_2,B_2)$ are pairs of not necessarily bounded and not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators such that the operat…
We introduce the concept of essential numerical range $W_{\!e}(T)$ for unbounded Hilbert space operators $T$ and study its fundamental properties including possible equivalent characterizations and perturbation results. Many of the properties known for the bounded case do \emph{not} carry over to the unbounded case, and new interesting phenomena arise which we illustrate by some striking examples. A key feature of the essential numerical range $W_{\!e}(T)$ is that it captures spectral pollution in a unified and minimal way when approximating $T$ by projection methods or domain truncation metho…
For p-subordinate perturbations of unbounded normal operators, the change of the spectrum is studied and spectral criteria for the existence of a Riesz basis with parentheses of root vectors are established. A Riesz basis without parentheses is obtained under an additional a priori assumption on the spectrum of the perturbed operator. The results are applied to two classes of block operator matrices.
We present a perturbation result for generators of $C_0$-semigroups which can be considered as an operator theoretic version of the Weiss-Staffans perturbation theorem for abstract linear systems. The result are illustrated by applications to the Desch-Schappacher, the Miyadera Voigt perturbation theorems, and to unbounded perturbations of the boundary conditions of a generator.
We prove quantitative bounds on the eigenvalues of non-selfadjoint bounded and unbounded operators. We use the perturbation determinant to reduce the problem to one of studying the zeroes of a holomorphic function.
We compute the Fredholm index, ${\rm ind}(D_A)$, of the operator $D_A = (d/dt) + A$ on $L^2(\mathbb{R};\mathcal{H})$ associated with the operator path $\{A(t)\}_{t=-\infty}^{\infty}$, where $(A f)(t) = A(t) f(t)$ for a.e. $t\in\mathbb{R}$, and appropriate $f \in L^2(\mathbb{R};\mathcal{H})$, via the spectral shift function $ξ(\, \cdot \,;A_+,A_-)$ associated with the pair $(A_+, A_-)$ of asymptotic operators $A_{\pm}=A(\pm\infty)$ on the separable complex Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ in the case when $A(t)$ is generally an unbounded (relatively trace class) perturbation of the unbounded self-ad…
A functional model for nondissipative unbounded perturbations of an unbounded self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space X is constructed. This model is analogous to the Nagy--Foias model of dissipative operators, but it is linearly similar and not unitarily equivalent to the operator. It is attached to a domain of parabolic type, instead of a half-plane. The transformation map from X to the model space and the analogue of the characteristic function are given explicitly. All usual consequences of the Nagy--Foias construction (the H-infty calculus, the commutant lifting, etc.) hold true in our c…
In this paper we give sufficient conditions on $α\geq 0$ and $c\in \mathbb{R}$ ensuring that the space of test functions $C_c^\infty(\mathbb{R}^N)$ is a core for the operator $$L_0u=(1+|x|^α)Δu+\frac{c}{|x|^2}u=:Lu+\frac{c}{|x|^2}u,$$ and $L_0$ with suitable domain generates a quasi-contractive and positivity preserving $C_0$-semigroup in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^N),\,1<p<\infty$. The proofs are based on some $L^p$-weighted Hardy's inequality and perturbation techniques.
Operators on unbounded domains may acquire eigenvalues that are embedded in the essential spectrum. Determining the fate of these embedded eigenvalues under small perturbations of the underlying operator is a challenging task, and the persistence properties of such eigenvalues is linked intimately to the multiplicity of the essential spectrum. In this paper, we consider the planar bilaplacian with potential and show that the set of potentials for which an embedded eigenvalue persists is locally an infinite-dimensional manifold with infinite codimension in an appropriate space of potentials.
We consider perturbations of dynamical semigroups on the algebra of all bounded operators in a Hilbert space generated by covariant completely positive measures on the semi-axis. The construction is based upon unbounded linear perturbations of generators of the preadjoint semigroups on the space of nuclear operators. As an application we construct a perturbation of the semigroup of non-unital *-endomorphisms on the algebra of canonical anticommutation relations resulting in the flow of shifts.
In a recent paper we presented a general perturbation result for generators of $C_0$-semigroups. The aim of the present paper is to replace, in case the unperturbed semigroup is analytic, the various conditions appearing in this result by simpler assumptions on the domain and range of the operators involved. The power of our result to treat classes of PDE's systematically is illustrated by considering a generic example, a degenerate differential operator with generalized Wentzell boundary conditions and a reaction diffusion equation subject to Neumann boundary conditions with distributed unbou…
We study spectral properties of nonselfadjoint rank one perturbations of compact selfadjoint operators. The problems under consideration include completeness of eigenvectors, relations between completeness of the perturbed operator and its adjoint, and the spectral synthesis problem. We obtain new criteria for completeness and spectral synthesis in this class as well as a series of counterexamples which show that the spectral structure of rank one perturbations is, in general, unexpectedly rich and complicated. A parallel spectral theory is developed for one-dimensional singular perturbations …
The quantum Ito formula has so far been proved for regular (bounded) quantum semimartingales We give three different extensions to classes of essentially self-adjoint (unbounded) quantum semimartingales. The first extension is to quantum semimartingales whose integrands have chaos matrices controlled by certain scalar matrices The second extension is to perturbations of classical, possibly unbounded, quantum semimartingales by bounded quantum semimartingales The third extension is obtained by perturbing an essentially self-adjoint quantum semimartingale satisfying the quantum Duhamel formula b…
For an unbounded operator $S$ on a Banach space the existence of invariant subspaces corresponding to its spectrum in the left and right half-plane is proved. The general assumption on $S$ is the uniform boundedness of the resolvent along the imaginary axis. The projections associated with the invariant subspaces are bounded if $S$ is strictly dichotomous, but may be unbounded in general. Explicit formulas for these projections in terms of resolvent integrals are derived and used to obtain perturbation theorems for dichotomy. All results apply, with certain simplifications, to bisectorial oper…
This paper is devoted to the study of $L^p$-maximal regularity for non-autonomous linear evolution equations of the form \begin{equation*}\label{Multi-pert1-diss-non} \dot u(t)+A(t)B(t)u(t)=f(t)\ \ t\in[0,T],\ \ u(0)=u_0. \end{equation*} where $\{A(t),\ t\in [0,T]\}$ is a family of linear unbounded operators whereas the operators $\{B(t),\ t\in [0,T]\}$ are bounded and invertible. In the Hilbert space situation we consider operators $A(t), \ t\in[0,T],$ which arise from sesquilinear forms. The obtained results are applied to parabolic linear differential equations in one spatial dimension.
Let $A,C,P:D(A)\subset X\to X$ be linear operators on a Banach space $X$ such that $-A$ generates a strongly continuous semigroup on $X$, and $F:X\to X$ be a globally Lipschitz function. We study the well-posedness of semilinear equations of the form $\dot{u}(t)=G(u(t))$, where $G:D(A)\to X$ is a nonlinear map defined by $G=-A+C+F\circ P$. In fact, using the concept of maximal $L^p$-regularity and a fixed point theorem, we establish the existence and uniqueness of a strong solution for the above-mentioned semilinear equation. We illustrate our results by applications to nonlinear heat equation…
Let $E \ni x\mapsto A(x)$ be a $\mathscr{C}$-mapping with values unbounded normal operators with common domain of definition and compact resolvent. Here $\mathscr{C}$ stands for $C^\infty$, $C^ω$ (real analytic), $C^{[M]}$ (Denjoy--Carleman of Beurling or Roumieu type), $C^{0,1}$ (locally Lipschitz), or $C^{k,α}$. The parameter domain $E$ is either $\mathbb R$ or $\mathbb R^n$ or an infinite dimensional convenient vector space. We completely describe the $\mathscr{C}$-dependence on $x$ of the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors of $A(x)$. Thereby we extend previously known results for self-adjoin…
