A functional model for nondissipative unbounded perturbations of an unbounded self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space X is constructed. This model is analogous to the Nagy--Foias model of dissipative operators, but it is linearly similar and not unitarily equivalent to the operator. It is attached to a domain of parabolic type, instead of a half-plane. The transformation map from X to the model space and the analogue of the characteristic function are given explicitly.
All usual consequences of the Nagy--Foias construction (the H-infty calculus, the commutant lifting, etc.) hold true in our context.
A tuple of commuting Hilbert space operators $(S_1, \dots, S_{n-1}, P)$ having the closed symmetrized polydisc \[ Γ_n = \left\{ \left(\sum_{i=1}^{n}z_i, \sum\limits_{1\leq i<j\leq n} z_iz_j, \cdots, \prod_{i=1}^{n}z_i\right) : |z_i|\leq 1\,, \; \; \; 1\leq i \leq n-1 \right\} \] as a spectral set is called a $Γ_n$-contraction. From the literature we have that a point $(s_1, \dots , s_{n-1},p)$ in $Γ_n$ can be represented as $s_i=c_i+pc_{n-i}$ for some $(c_1, \dots, c_{n-1}) \in Γ_{n-1}$. We construct a minimal $Γ_n$-isometric dilation for a particular class of c.n.u. $Γ_n$-contractions $(S_1, …
The goal of the present paper is to push Sz.-Nagy--Foias model theory for a completely nonunitary Hilbert-space contraction operator $T$, to the case of a commuting pair of contraction operators $(T_1, T_2)$ having product $T = T_1 T_2$ which is completely nonunitary. The idea is to use the Sz.-Nagy-Foias functional model for $T$ as the model space also for the commutative tuple ($T_1, T_2)$ with $T = T_1 T_2$ equal to the usual Sz.-Nagy--Foias model operator, and identify what added structure is required to classify such commutative contractive factorizations $T = T_1 T_2$ up to unitary equiv…
Using the tools of Sz.-Nagy--Foias theory of contractions, we describe in detail the invariant subspaces of the operator $ S\oplus S^* $, where $ S $ is the unilateral shift on a Hilbert space. This answers a question of Câmara and Ross.
Using the Sz.-Nagy--Foias theory of contractions, we obtain general results about reducibility for a class of completely nonunitary contractions. These are applied to certain truncated Toeplitz operators, previously considered by Li--Yang--Lu and Gu. In particular, a negative answer is given to a conjecture stated by the latter.
We develop a Sz.-Nagy--Foias-type functional model for a commutative contractive operator tuple $\underline{T} = (T_1, \dots, T_d)$ having $T = T_1 \cdots T_d$ equal to a completely nonunitary contraction. We identify additional invariants ${\mathbb G}_\sharp, {\mathbb W}_\sharp$ in addition to the Sz.-Nagy--Foias characteristic function $Θ_T$ for the product operator $T$ so that the combined triple $({\mathbb G}_\sharp, {\mathbb W}_\sharp, Θ_T)$ becomes a complete unitary invariant for the original operator tuple $\underline{T}$. For the case $d \ge 3$ in general there is no commutative isome…
This dissertation summarizes my investigations in operator theory during my PhD studies. The first chapter is an introduction to that field of operator theory which was developed by B. Sz.-Nagy and C. Foias, the theory of power-bounded Hilbert space operators. In the second and third chapter I characterize operators which arise from power-bounded operators asymptotically. Chapter 4 is devoted to provide a possible generalization of (the necessity part of) Sz.-Nagy's famous similarity theorem. In Chapter 5 I collected my results concerning the commutant mapping of asymptotically non-vanishing c…
This paper generalizes the classical Sz.-Nagy--Foias $H^{\infty}(\mathbb{D})$ functional calculus for Hilbert space contractions. In particular, we replace the single contraction $T$ with a tuple $T=(T_1, \dots, T_d)$ of commuting bounded operators on a Hilbert space and replace $H^{\infty}(\mathbb{D})$ with a large class of multiplier algebras of Hilbert function spaces on the unit ball in $\mathbb C^d$.
This paper is an attempt to find large classes of noncommutative multivariable functions $g:Ω\subset [B(\cH)^n]_1^-\to B(\cH)^n$ for which a reasonable operator model theory and dilation theory can be developed for the noncommutative domain $g(Ω)$. In other words, we want to transfer the free analogue of Nagy-Foias theory from the unit ball $[B(\cH)^n]_1$ to other noncommutative domains, using appropriate maps.
For an invertible linear operator $T$ on a Hilbert space $H$, put \[ α(T^*,T) := -T^{*2}T^2 + (1+r^2) T^* T - r^2 I, \] where $I$ stands for the identity operator on $H$ and $r\in (0,1)$; this expression comes from applying Agler's hereditary functional calculus to the polynomial $α(t)=(1-t) (t-r^2)$. We give a concrete unitarily equivalent functional model for operators satisfying $α(T^*,T)\ge0$. In particular, we prove that the closed annulus $r\le |z|\le 1$ is a complete $K$-spectral set for $T$. We explain the relation of the model with the Sz.-Nagy--Foias one and with the observability gr…
One can view contraction operators given by a canonical model of Sz.-Nagy and Foias as being defined by a quotient module where the basic building blocks are Hardy spaces. In this note we generalize this framework to allow the Bergman and weighted Bergman spaces as building blocks, but restricting attention to the case in which the operator obtained is in the Cowen-Douglas class and requiring the multiplicity to be one. We view the classification of such operators in the context of complex geometry and obtain a complete classification up to unitary equivalence of them in terms of their associa…
A particular case of results from [K2] is as follows. Let the unitary asymptote of a contraction $T$ contain the bilateral shift (of finite or infinite multiplicity). Then there exists an invariant subspace $\mathcal M$ of $T$ such that $T|_{\mathcal M}$ is similar to the unilateral shift of the same multiplicity. The proof is based on the Sz.-Nagy--Foias functional model for contractions. In the present paper this result is generalized to polynomially bounded operators, but in the simplest case. Namely, it is proved that if the unitary asymptote of a polynomially bounded operator $T$ contains…
We obtain intertwining dilation theorems for noncommutative regular domains D_f and noncommutative varieties V_J of n-tuples of operators, which generalize Sarason and Sz.-Nagy--Foias commutant lifting theorem for commuting contractions. We present several applications including a new proof for the commutant lifting theorem for pure elements in the domain D_f (resp. variety V_J) as well as a Schur type representation for the unit ball of the Hardy algebra associated with the variety V_J. We provide Ando type dilations and inequalities for bi-domains D_f \times D_g and bi-varieties V_J \times V…
The goal of the present paper is to introduce and study noncommutative Hardy spaces associated with the regular $Λ$-polyball, to develop a functional calculus on noncommutative Hardy spaces for the completely non-coisometric (c.n.c.) $k$-tuples in ${\bf B}_Λ(H)$, and to study the characteristic functions and the associated multi-analytic models for the c.n.c. elements in the regular $Λ$-polyball. In addition, we show that the characteristic function is a complete unitary invariant for the class of c.n.c. $k$-tuples in ${\bf B}_Λ(H)$. These results extend the corresponding classical results of …
Let $T$ be a bounded linear operator on a Hilbert space $H$ such that \[ α[T^*,T]:=\sum_{n=0}^\infty α_n T^{*n}T^n\ge 0. \] where $α(t)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty α_n t^n$ is a suitable analytic function in the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ with real coefficients. We prove that if $α(t) = (1-t) \tildeα (t)$, where $\tildeα$ has no roots in $[0,1]$, then $T$ is similar to a contraction. Operators of this type have been investigated by Agler, Müller, Olofsson, Pott and others, however, we treat cases where their techniques do not apply. We write down an explicit Nagy-Foias type model of an operator in this clas…
The spectral and scattering properties of non-selfadjoint problems pose a mathematical challenge. Apart from exceptional cases, the well-developed methods used to examine the spectrum of selfadjoint problems are not applicable. One of the tools to attack non-selfadjoint problems are functional models. A drawback of many functional models is that their constructions require objects which may be difficult to describe explicitly, such as operator square roots, making it hard to apply the results to specific examples. We develop a functional model for the case when the non-selfadjointness arises b…
A commuting tuple of $n$ operators $(S_1, \dots, S_{n-1}, P)$ defined on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, for which the closed symmetrized polydisc \[ Γ_n = \left\{ \left(\sum_{i=1}^{n}z_i, \sum\limits_{1\leq i<j\leq n}z_iz_j, \dots, \prod_{i=1}^{n}z_i \right) : |z_i|\leq 1, i=1, \dots, n \right\} \] is a spectral set is called a $Γ_n$-contraction. Also a triple of commuting operators $(A,B,P)$ for which the closed tetrablock $\overline{\mathbb E}$ is a spectral set is called an $\mathbb E$-contraction, where \[ \mathbb E = \{ (x_1,x_2,x_3)\in\mathbb C^3\,:\, 1-zx_1-wx_2+zwx_3 \neq 0 \quad \fora…
All unitary perturbations of a given unitary operator $U$ by finite rank $d$ operators with fixed range can be parametrized by $(d\times d)$ unitary matrices $Γ$; this generalizes unitary rank one ($d=1$) perturbations, where the Aleksandrov--Clark family of unitary perturbations is parametrized by the scalars on the unit circle $\mathbb{T}\subset\mathbb{C}$. For a purely contractive $Γ$ the resulting perturbed operator $T_Γ$ is a contraction (a completely non-unitary contraction under the natural assumption about cyclicity of the range), so they admit the functional model. In this paper we in…
A commuting pair of operators (S, P) on a Hilbert space H is said to be a Gamma-contraction if the symmetrized bidisc is a spectral set of the tuple (S, P). In this paper we develop some operator theory inspired by Agler and Young's results on a model theory for Gamma-contractions. We prove a Beurling-Lax-Halmos type theorem for Gamma-isometries. Along the way we solve a problem in the classical one-variable operator theory. We use a "pull back" technique to prove that a completely non-unitary Gamma-contraction (S, P) can be dilated to a direct sum of a Gamma-isometry and a Gamma-unitary on th…
It is known that (i) a subspace ${\mathcal N}$ of the Hardy space $H^2$ which is invariant under the backward shift operator can be represented as the range of the observability operator of a conservative discrete-time linear system, (ii) the transfer-function of this conservative linear system in turn is the inner Beurling-Lax representer for the forward-shift invariant subspace ${\mathcal M} : = {\mathcal N}^\perp$, and (iii) this transfer function also serves as the Sz.-Nagy-Foias characteristic function of the pure contraction operator $T$ given by $T = P_{\mathcal N} M_z |_{\mathcal N}$. …
For a unitary operator the family of its unitary perturbations by rank one operators with fixed range is parametrized by a complex parameter $γ, |γ|=1$. Namely all such unitary perturbations are $U_γ:=U+(γ-1) (., b_1)_{\mathcal H} b$, where $b\in\mathcal H, \|b\|=1, b_1=U^{-1} b, |γ|=1$. For $|γ|<1$ operators $U_γ$ are contractions with one-dimensional defects. Restricting our attention on the non-trivial part of perturbation we assume that $b$ is cyclic for $U$. Then the operator $U_γ$, $|γ|<1$ is a completely non-unitary contraction, and thus unitarily equivalent to its functional model $\ma…
A commuting tuple of operators $(S_1,\dots, S_{n-1},P)$, defined on a Hilbert space $\mathcal H$, for which the closed symmetrized polydisc \[ Γ_n =\left\{ \left(\sum_{1\leq i\leq n} z_i,\sum_{1\leq i<j\leq n}z_iz_j,\dots, \prod_{i=1}^n z_i \right): \,|z_i|\leq 1, i=1,\dots,n \right \} \] is a spectral set, is called a $Γ_n$-\textit{contraction}. A $Γ_n$-contraction is said to be \textit{pure} or $C._0$ if $P$ is $C._0$, that is, if ${P^*}^n \rightarrow 0$ strongly as $n \rightarrow \infty$. We show that for any $Γ_n$-contraction $(S_1,\dots, S_{n-1},P)$, there is a unique operator tuple $(A_1…
