This paper is a continuation of the paper (A.G.Ramm, Amer. Math. Monthly, 108, N 9, (2001), 855-860), where bounded Fredholm operators are studied. The theory of bounded linear Fredholm-type operators is presented in many texts. This paper is written for a broad audience and the author tries to give simple and short arguments.
We discuss several natural metrics on spaces of unbounded self--adjoint operators and their relations, among them the Riesz and the graph metric. We show that the topologies of the spaces of Fredholm operators resp. invertible operators depend heavily on the metric. Nevertheless we prove that in all cases the spectral flow is up to a normalization the only integer invariant of non-closed paths which is path additive and stable under homotopies with endpoints varying in the space of invertible self-adjoint operators. Furthermore we show that for certain Riesz continuous paths of self--adjoint F…
We prove that a first order linear differential operator G with unbounded operator coefficients is Fredholm on spaces of functions on the real line with values in a reflexive Banach space if and only if the corresponding strongly continuous evolution family has exponential dichotomies on both semiaxises and a pair of the ranges of the dichotomy projections is Fredholm, and that the Fredholm index of G is equal to the Fredholm index of the pair. The operator G is the generator of the evolution semigroup associated with the evolution family. In the case when the evolution family is the propagato…
In noncommutative geometry one is interested in invariants such as the Fredholm index or spectral flow and their calculation using cyclic cocycles. A variety of formulae have been established under side conditions called summability constraints. These can be formulated in two ways, either for spectral triples or for bounded Fredholm modules. We study the relationship between these by proving various properties of the map on unbounded self adjoint operators $D$ given by $f(D)=D(1+D^2)^{-1/2}$. In particular we prove commutator estimates which are needed for the bounded case. In fact our methods…
We study the gap (= "projection norm" = "graph distance") topology of the space of (not necessarily bounded) self--adjoint Fredholm operators in a separable Hilbert space by the Cayley transform and direct methods. In particular, we show that the space is connected contrary to the bounded case. Moreover, we present a rigorous definition of spectral flow of a path of such operators (actually alternative but mutually equivalent definitions) and prove the homotopy invariance. As an example, we discuss operator curves on manifolds with boundary.
We characterize lower semi-Fredholm and Fredholm of weighted composition operators on $C(K)$ in the case when the corresponding map is an open surjection of the compact space $K$ onto itself. The obtained criterions involve the notion of almost homeomorphisms of compact spaces.
In this paper we study the semi-Fredholm property of band-dominated operators $A$ and prove that it already implies the Fredholmness of $A$ in all cases where this is not disqualified by obvious reasons. Moreover, this observation is applied to show that the Fredholmness of a band-dominated operator already follows from the surjectivity of all its limit operators.
In this paper a definition is given for an unbounded Toeplitz-like operator with rational symbol which has poles on the unit circle. It is shown that the operator is Fredholm if and only if the symbol has no zeroes on the unit circle, and a formula for the index is given as well. Finally, a matrix representation of the operator is discussed.
Suppose $Γ$ is a Carleson Jordan curve with logarithmic whirl points, $\varrho$ is a Khvedelidze weight, $p:Γ\to(1,\infty)$ is a continuous function satisfying $|p(τ)-p(t)|\le -\mathrm{const}/\log|τ-t|$ for $|τ-t|\le 1/2$, and $L^{p(\cdot)}(Γ,\varrho)$ is a weighted generalized Lebesgue space with variable exponent. We prove that all semi-Fredholm operators in the algebra of singular integral operators with $N\times N$ matrix piecewise continuous coefficients are Fredholm on $L_N^{p(\cdot)}(Γ,\varrho)$.
For bounded right linear operators, in a right quaternionic Hilbert space with a left multiplication defined on it, we study the approximate $S$-point spectrum. In the same Hilbert space, then we study the Fredholm operators and the Fredholm index. In particular, we prove the invariance of the Fredholm index under small norm operator and compact operator perturbations. Finally, in association with Fredholm operators, we develop the theory of essential S-spectrum. We also characterize the $S$-spectrum in terms of the essential S-spectrum and Fredholm operators. In the sequel we study left and r…
We consider Toeplitz and Hankel operators with piecewise continuous generating functions on $l^p$-spaces and the Banach algebra generated by them. The goal of this paper is to provide a transparent symbol calculus for the Fredholm property and a handy formula for the Fredholm index for operators in this algebra.
We establish a necessary and sufficient criterion for the Fredholmness of a general locally compact band-dominated operator $A$ on $L^p(R)$ and solve the long-standing problem of computing its Fredholm index in terms of the limit operators of $A$. The results are applied to operators of convolution type with almost periodic symbol.
In this paper, first we investigate closed range multiplication conditional type operators between two Lp-spaces. Then we characterize Fredholm ones when the underlying measure space is non-atomic. Finally we give some examples.
In this expository note, we present a simple proof of the Fredholm Alternative for compact operators that are norm limits of finite rank operators. We also prove a Fredholm Alternative for pseudodifferential operators of order < 0.
We define a new topology, weaker than the gap topology, on the space of selfadjoint unbounded operators on a separable Hilbert space. We show that the subspace of selfadjoint Fredholm operators represents the functor $K^1$ from the category of compact spaces to the category of abelian groups and prove a similar result for $K^0$. We define the spectral flow of a continuous path of selfadjoint Fredholm operators generalizing the approach of Booss-Bavnek--Lesch--Phillips.
Toeplitz operators on spaces $H^p(G)\ (1< p<\infty)$ associated with compact connected Abelian group $G$ with ordered dual are considered and the generalization of the classical Gohberg-Krein theorem on the Fredholm index of such operators with continuous symbols is proved. Applications to spectral theory of Toeplitz operators are given and examples of evident computation of index have been considered.
In this work it is introduced the notion of regular Fredholm pair, i.e. a Fredholm pair whose operators are regular. The main properties of these objects are studied, and what is more, they are entirely classified. Furthermore, the index of a Fredholm pair turns out to be an extremely useful tool in the description of the aforementioned objects. Finally, regular Fredholm pairs are characterized in terms of regular Fredholm symmetrical pairs, exact chains of multiplication operators, and invertible Banach space operators.
We develop a complete Fredholm and invertibility theory for Toeplitz+Hankel operators $T(a)+H(b)$ on the Hardy space $H^p$, $1<p<\infty$, with piecewise continuous functions $a,b$ defined on the unit circle which are subject to the condition $a(t)a(t^{-1})=b(t)b(t^{-1})$, $|t|=1$. In particular, in the case of Fredholmness, formulas for the defect numbers are established. The results are applied to several important examples.
This paper concerns the analysis of an unbounded Toeplitz-like operator generated by a rational matrix function having poles on the unit circle T. It extends the analysis of such operators generated by scalar rational functions with poles on T found in [11,12,13]. A Wiener-Hopf type factorization of rational matrix functions with poles and zeroes on T is proved and then used to analyze the Fredholm properties of such Toeplitz-like operators. A formula for the index, based on the factorization, is given. Furthermore, it is shown that the determinant of the matrix function having no zeroes on T …
In this paper we show the invariance of the Fredholm index of non-smooth pseudodifferential operators with coefficients in Hölder spaces. By means of this invariance we improve previous spectral invariance results for non-smooth pseudodifferential operators $P$ with coefficients in Hölder spaces. For this purpose we approximate $P$ with smooth pseudodifferential operators and use a spectral invariance result of smooth pseudodifferential operators. Then we get the spectral invariance result in analogy to a proof of the spectral invariance result for non-smooth differential operators by Rabier.
Consider a selfadjoint unbounded operator D on a Hilbert space H and a one parameter norm continuous family of selfadjoint bounded operators {A(t)} parametrized by the real line. Then under certain conditions \cite{RS95} that include the assumption that the operators {D(t)= D+A(t)} all have discrete spectrum then the spectral flow along the path { D(t)} can be shown to be equal to the index of d/dt+D(t) when the latter is an unbounded Fredholm operator on L^2(R, H). In \cite{GLMST11} an investigation of the index=spectral flow question when the operators in the path may have some essential spe…
Let $X$ a Banach space and $T$ a bounded linear operator on $X.$ We denote by $S(T)$ the set of all $λ\in \cit$ such that $T$ does not have the single-valued extension property at $λ$. In this note we prove equality up to $S(T)$ between the left Drazin spectrum and the left B-Fredholm spectrum and between the semi-essential approximate point spectrum and the left Drazin spectrum. As applications we investigate generalized Weyl's theorem for operator matrices and multipliers operators.
We describe two topologies on the space of unbounded Fredholm operators and we explain their K-theoretic relevance. In the process we also prove a very general result concerning the continuity of families of first order, elliptic boundary value problems.
We prove that a (bounded linear) operator acting on an infinite-dimensional, separable, complex Hilbert space can be written as a product of two quasi-nilpotent operators if and only if it is not a semi-Fredholm operator. This solves the problem posed by Fong and Sourour in 1984. We also consider some closely related questions. In particular, we show that an operator can be expressed as a product of two nilpotent operators if and only if its kernel and co-kernel are both infinite-dimensional. This answers the question implicitly posed by Wu in 1989.
Schur coupling (SC) and equivalence after extension (EAE) are important relations for bounded operators on Banach spaces. It has been known for 30 years that the former implies the latter, but only recently Ter Horst, Messerschmidt, Ran and Roelands disproved the converse by constructing a pair of Fredholm operators which are EAE, but not SC. Motivated by this result, we investigate when EAE and SC coincide for Fred\-holm operators. Fredholm operators which are EAE have the same Fredholm index. Surprisingly, we find that for each integer $k$ and every pair of Banach spaces $(\mathcal{X},\mathc…
We will give a complete description of $\mathcal{I}$, the set of invertible quasicontinuous functions on the unit circle. After doing this, we will then classify the path-connected components of $\mathcal{I}$ and show that $\mathcal{I}$ has uncountably many path-connected components. We will then use the above classifications to characterize $\mathcal{F}$, the set of Fredholm operators of the C$^*$-algebra generated by the Toeplitz operators $T_ϕ$ with quasicontinuous symbols $ϕ$. Then we will classify the path-connected components of $\mathcal{F}$ and show that $\mathcal{F}$ also has uncounta…
We prove novel results on interpolation of Fredholm operators including an abstract factorization theorem. The main result of this paper provides sufficient conditions on the parameters $θ\in (0,1)$ and $q\in \lbrack 1,\infty ]$ under which an operator $A$ is a Fredholm operator from the real interpolation space $(X_{0},X_{1})_{θ,q}$ to $(Y_{0},Y_{1})_{θ,q} $ for a given operator $A\colon (X_{0},X_{1})\rightarrow (Y_{0},Y_{1})$ between compatible pairs of Banach spaces such that its restrictions to the endpoint spaces are Fredholm operators. These conditions are expressed in terms of the corre…
In this paper the concept of unbounded Fredholm operators on Hilbert C*- modules over an arbitrary C*-algebra is discussed and the Atkinson theorem is generalized for bounded and unbounded Feredholm operators on Hilbert C*-modules over C*-algebras of compact operators. In the framework of Hilbert C*-modules over C*-algebras of compact operators, the index of an unbounded Fredholm operator and the index of its bounded transform are the same.
In this work characterizations of Fredholm pairs and chains of Hilbert space operators are given. Following a well-known idea of several variable operator theory in Hilbert spaces, the aforementioned objects are characterized in terms of Fredholm linear and bounded maps. Furthermore, as an application of the main results of this work, direct proofs of the stability properties of Fredholm pairs and chains in Hilbert spaces are obtained.
We study adjointable, bounded operators on the direct sum of two copies of the standard Hilbert C*-module over a unital C*-algebra A that are given by upper triangular 2 by 2 operator matrices. Using the definition of A-Fredholm and semi-A-Fredholm operators given in [3], [4], we obtain conditions relating semi-A-Fredholmness of these operators and that of their diagonal entries, thus generalizing the results in [1], [2]. Moreover, we generalize the notion of the spectra of operators by replacing scalars by the center of the C*-algebra A denoted by Z(A).Considering these new spectra in Z(A) of…
The index of a pseudo B-Fredholm operator will be defined and generalize the usual index of a B-Fredholm operator. This concept will be used to extend some known results in Fredholm's theory. Among other results, the nullity, the deficiency, the ascent and the descent will be extended and defined for a pseudo-Fredholm operator.
As we knew, study the perturbation theory of spectra of operator is a very important project in mathematics physics, in particular, in quantum mechanics. In this paper, we characterize the Fredholm perturbation for the Weyl spectrum, essential spectrum, spectrum, left spectrum, right spectrum, lower semi-Fredholm spectrum, upper semi-Weyl spectrum and lower semi-Weyl spectrum of upper triangular operator matrix $M_{C}=({cc} A&C 0&B)$.
This note relates the notion of a discrete-spectrum family of Fredholm operators, recently introduced by N. Ivanov in arXiv:2111.15081, with the classical continuity properties in the space of operators.
Starting from the definition of A-Fredholm and semi-A-Fredholm operator on the standard module over a unital C*- algebra A, introduced in [8] and [4], we construct various generalizations of these operators and obtain several results as an analogue or a generalization of the results in [1], [2], [3],[7]. Moreover, we study also non-adjointable semi-A-Fredholm operators as a natural continuation of the work in [6] on non-adjointable A-Fredholm operators and obtain an analogue or a generalization in this setting of the results in [4], [5].
We consider special elliptic operators in functional spaces on manifolds with a boundary which has some singular points. Such an operator can be represented by a sum of operators, and for a Fredholm property of an initial operator one needs a Fredholm property for an each operator from this sum.
Let $A$ be a linear bounded operator in a Hilbert space $H$, $N(A)$ and $R(A)$ its null-space and range, and $A^*$ its adjoint. The operator $A$ is called Fredholm iff $dim N(A)= dim N(A^*):=n<\infty$ and $R(A)$ and $R(A^*)$ are closed subspaces of $H$. A simple and short proof is given of the following known result: $A$ is Fredholm iff $A=B+F$, where $B$ is an isomorphism and $F$ is a finite-rank operator. The proof consists in reduction to a finite-dimensional linear algebraic system which is equivalent to the equation $Au=f$ in the case of Fredholm operators.
The aim of this note is to generalize the notion of Fredholm operator to an arbitrary $C^*$-algebra. Namely, we define "finite type" elements in an axiomatic way, and also we define Fredholm type element $a$ as such element of a given $C^*$-algebra for which there are finite type elements $p$ and $q$ such that $(1-q)a(1-p)$ is "invertible". We derive index theorem for such operators. In applications we show that classical Fredholm operators on a Hilbert space, Fredholm operators in the sense of Breuer, Atiyah and Singer on a properly infinite von Neumann algebra, and Fredholm operators on Hilb…
In this paper we consider A-Fredholm and semi-A-Fredholm operators on Hilbert C*-modules over a W*-algebra A defined in [3],[10]. Using the assumption that A is a W*-algebra (and not an arbitrary C*-algebra), we obtain several results such as generalization of Schechter-Lebow characterization of semi-Fredholm operators and generalization of "punctured neighbourhood" theorem, as well as some other results that generalize their classical counterparts. We consider both adjointable and non adjointable semi-Fredholm operators over W*-algebras. Moreover, we also work with general bounded, adjointabl…
One may trace the idea that spectral flow should be given as the integral of a one form back to the 1974 Vancouver ICM address of I.M. Singer. Our main theorem gives analytic formulae for the spectral flow along a norm differentiable path of self-adjoint bounded Breuer-Fredholm operators in a semi-finite von Neumann algebra. These formulae have a geometric interpretation which derives from the proof. Namely we define a family of Banach submanifolds of all bounded self-adjoint Breuer-Fredholm operators and on each submanifold define global one forms whose integral on a norm differentiable path …
The Fredholm property of Toeplitz operators on the $p$-Fock spaces $F_α^p$ on $\mathbb{C}^n$ is studied. A general Fredholm criterion for arbitrary operators from the Toeplitz algebra $\mathcal{T}_{p,α}$ on $F_α^p$ in terms of the invertibility of limit operators is derived. This paper is based on previous work, which establishes corresponding results on the unit balls $\mathbb{B}^n$.
In this paper we prove sufficient conditions for the Fredholm property of a non-smooth pseudodifferential operator $P$ which symbol is in a Hölder space with respect to the spatial variable. As a main ingredient for the proof we use a suitable symbol-smoothing.
In this paper we establish the semi-Fredholm theory on Hilbert C*-modules as a continuation of Fredholm theory on Hilbert C*-modules established by Mishchenko and Fomenko. We give a definition of a semi-Fredholm operator on Hilbert C*-module and prove that these semi-Fredholm operators are those that are one-sided invertible modulo compact operators, that the set of proper semi-Fredholm operators is open and many other results that generalize their classical counterparts.
This paper presents the Fredholm theory on l^p-spaces for band-dominated operators and important subclasses, such as operators in the Wiener algebra. It particularly closes several gaps in the previously known results for the case p=\infty and addresses the open questions raised in a paper by Chandler-Wilde and Lindner. The main tools are provided by the limit operator method and an algebraic framework for the description and adaption of Fredholmness and convergence. A comprehensive overview of this approach is given.
The index of a selfadjoint Fredholm operator is zero by the well-known fact that the kernel of a selfadjoint operator is perpendicular to its range. The Fredholm index was generalised to families by Atiyah and Jänich in the sixties, and it is readily seen that on complex Hilbert spaces this so called index bundle vanishes for families of selfadjoint Fredholm operators as in the case of a single operator. The first aim of this note is to point out that for every real Hilbert space and every compact topological space $X$ there is a family of selfadjoint Fredholm operators parametrised by $X\time…
Operators possessing analytic generalized inverses satisfying the resolvent identity are studied. Several characterizations and necessary conditions are obtained. The maximal radius of regularity for a Fredholm operator T is computed in terms of the spectral radius of a generalized inverse of T. This provides a partial answer to a conjecture of J. Zemánek.
We define classes of pseudodifferential operators on $G$-bundles with compact base and give a generalized $L^2$ Fredholm theory for invariant operators in these classes in terms of von Neumann's $G$-dimension. We combine this formalism with a generalized Paley-Wiener theorem, valid for bundles with unimodular structure groups, to provide solvability criteria for invariant operators. This formalism also gives a basis for a $G$-index for these operators. We also define and describe a transversal dimension and its corresponding Fredholm theory in terms of anisotropic Sobolev estimates, valid also…
Withdrawn due to a likely error with the homeomorphism at line (4). Old abstract: In the monograph 'Limit Operators and their Applications in Operator Theory', the authors define the operator spectrum of a band-dominated operator T and prove that T is Fredholm if and only if all of the operators in its operator spectrum are invertible with uniformly bounded inverses. They also ask whether the uniform boundedness condition can in fact be dispensed with. In this note we answer this question affirmatively.
We study the composition of time-ffrequency localization operators (wavepacket operators) and develop a symbolic calculus of such operators on modulation spaces. The use of time-frequency methods (phase space methods) allows the use of rough symbols of ultra-rapid growth in place of smooth symbols in the standard classes. As the main application it is shown that, in general, a localization operators possesses the Fredholm property, and thus its range is closed in the target space.
We produce a variety of odd bounded Fredholm modules and odd spectral triples on Cuntz-Krieger algebras by means of realizing these algebras as "the algebra of functions on a non-commutative space" coming from a sub shift of finite type. We show that any odd $K$-homology class can be represented by such an odd bounded Fredholm module or odd spectral triple. The odd bounded Fredholm modules that are constructed are finitely summable. The spectral triples are $θ$-summable although their bounded transform, when constructed using the sign-function, will already on the level of analytic $K$-cycles …
We consider bisingular pseudodifferential operators which are pseudodifferential operators of tensor product type. These operators are defined on the product manifold $M_1 \times M_2$, for closed manifolds $M_1$ and $M_2$. We prove a topological index theorem of product type. In addition, we show that the Fredholm index of elliptic bisingular operators equals the topological index, whenever the operator takes the form of an external tensor product of pseudodifferential operators, up to equivalence. To this end we construct a suitable double deformation groupoid and a Poincaré duality type homo…
This paper concerns Fredholm theory in several variables, and its applications to Hilbert spaces of analytic functions. One feature is the introduction of ideas from commutative algebra to operator theory. Specifically, we introduce a method to calculate the Fredholm index of a pair of commuting operators. To achieve this, we define and study the Hilbert space analogs of Samuel multiplicities in commutative algebra. Then the theory is applied to the symmetric Fock space. In particular, our results imply a satisfactory answer to Arveson's program on developing a Fredholm theory for pure $d$-con…
