We establish a necessary and sufficient criterion for the Fredholmness of a general locally compact band-dominated operator $A$ on $L^p(R)$ and solve the long-standing problem of computing its Fredholm index in terms of the limit operators of $A$. The results are applied to operators of convolution type with almost periodic symbol.
In this paper we study the semi-Fredholm property of band-dominated operators $A$ and prove that it already implies the Fredholmness of $A$ in all cases where this is not disqualified by obvious reasons. Moreover, this observation is applied to show that the Fredholmness of a band-dominated operator already follows from the surjectivity of all its limit operators.
This paper presents the Fredholm theory on l^p-spaces for band-dominated operators and important subclasses, such as operators in the Wiener algebra. It particularly closes several gaps in the previously known results for the case p=\infty and addresses the open questions raised in a paper by Chandler-Wilde and Lindner. The main tools are provided by the limit operator method and an algebraic framework for the description and adaption of Fredholmness and convergence. A comprehensive overview of this approach is given.
Withdrawn due to a likely error with the homeomorphism at line (4). Old abstract: In the monograph 'Limit Operators and their Applications in Operator Theory', the authors define the operator spectrum of a band-dominated operator T and prove that T is Fredholm if and only if all of the operators in its operator spectrum are invertible with uniformly bounded inverses. They also ask whether the uniform boundedness condition can in fact be dispensed with. In this note we answer this question affirmatively.
In the context of an infinite locally finite weighted graph, we give a necessary and sufficientcondition for semi-Fredholmness of the Gauss-Bonnet operator. This result is a discrete version of thetheorem of Gilles Carron in the continuous case [5]. In addition, using a criterion of Anghel [2], we givea sufficient condition to have an operator of Gauss-Bonnet with closed range. Finally, this work can beconsidered as an extension of the work of Colette Anné and Nabila Torki-Hamza [3].
We study bounded operators defined in terms of the regular representations of the $C^*$-algebra of an amenable, Hausdorff, second countable locally compact groupoid endowed with a continuous $2$-cocycle. We concentrate on spectral quantities associated to natural quotients of this twisted algebra, such as the essential spectrum, the essential numerical range, and Fredholm properties. We obtain decompositions for the regular representations associated to units of the groupoid belonging to a free locally closed orbit, in terms of spectral quantities attached to points (or orbits) in the boundary…
An operator on an $l^{p}$-space is called band-dominated if it can be approximated, in the operator norm, by operators with a banded matrix representation. It is known that a rich band-dominated operator is $\mathcal{P}$-Fredholm (which is a generalization of the classical Fredholm property) if and only if all of its so-called limit operators are invertible and their inverses are uniformly bounded. We show that the condition on uniform boundedness is redundant in this statement.
An operator $A$ on an $l^p$-space is called band-dominated if it can be approximated, in the operator norm, by operators with a banded matrix representation. The coset of $A$ in the Calkin algebra determines, for example, the Fredholmness of $A$, the Fredholm index, the essential spectrum, the essential norm and the so-called essential pseudospectrum of $A$. This coset can be identified with the collection of all so-called limit operators of $A$. It is known that this identification preserves invertibility (hence spectra). We now show that it also preserves norms and in particular resolvent no…
A version of Arzelà-Ascoli theorem for $X$ being $σ$-locally compact Hausdorff space is proved. The result is used in proving compactness of Fredholm, Hammerstein and Urysohn operators. Two fixed point theorems, for Hammerstein and Urysohn operator, are derived on the basis of Schauder theorem.
The main aim of the paper is Fredholm properties of a class of bounded linear operators acting on weighted Lebesgue spaces on an infinite metric graph $Γ$ which is periodic with respect to the action of the group ${\mathbb Z}^n$. The operators under consideration are distinguished by their local behavior: they act as (Fourier) pseudodifferential operators in the class $OPS^0$ on every open edge of the graph, and they can be represented as a matrix Mellin pseudodifferential operator on a neighborhood of every vertex of $Γ$. We apply these results to study the Fredholm property of a class of sin…
We study band-dominated operators on (subspaces of) $L_p$-spaces over metric measure spaces of bounded geometry satisfying an additional property. We single out core assumptions to obtain, in an abstract setting, definitions of limit operators, characterizations of compactness and Fredholmness using limit operators; and thus also spectral consequences. In this way, we recover and unify the classical and recent results on limit operator techniques, but also gain new insights and are able to treat further applications.
In the present article, it is proved that every nuclear operator in a locally convex space E has a well-defined trace if E possesses the approximation property. However, even if a space possesses the approximation property this still does not guarantee a positive solution of A. Grothendieck's uniqueness problem for this space. Below, we present an example of a quasi-complete space with the approximation property in which it is not possible to define the trace for all Fredholm operators (in the sense of A. Grothendieck). We prove that the uniqueness problem has a positive solution if E possesse…
In the setting of several commuting operators on a Hilbert space one defines the notions of invertibility and Fredholmness in terms of the associated Koszul complex. The index problem then consists of computing the Euler characteristic of such a special type of Fredholm complex. In this paper we investigate transformation rules for the index under the holomorphic functional calculus. We distinguish between two different types of index results: 1) A global index theorem which expresses the index in terms of the degree function of the "symbol" and the locally constant index function of the "coor…
If $G$ is a locally compact group, $CD(G)$ the algebra of convolution dominated operators on $L^2(G)$ then an important question is: Is $\mathbb{C}1+CD(G)$ (respectively $CD(G)$ if $G$ is discrete) inverse-closed in the bounded operators on $L^2(G)$? In this note we answer this question in the affirmative provided $G$ is such that one of the following properties is fulfilled (1) There is a discrete, rigidly symmetric, and amenable subgroup $H\subset G$ and a (measurable) relatively compact neighbourhood of the identity $U$ invariant under conjugation by elements of $H$ such that $\{hU\;:\;h\in…
The goal of this paper is to study band-dominated operators on Banach spaces with Schauder basis with respect to uniformly locally finite metric spaces as well as the Banach algebras generated by them: the so called uniform Roe algebras. We investigate several kinds of isomorphisms between those Banach spaces (e.g., isomorphisms preserving norm, order, algebraic structure, etc) and prove several rigidity results on when a certain kind of isomorphism between the uniform Roe algebras implies that the base metric spaces are (bijectively) coarsely equivalent.
This paper is a follow-up to a recent article about the essential spectrum of Toeplitz operators acting on the Bergman space over the unit ball. As mentioned in the said article, some of the arguments can be carried over to the case of bounded symmetric domains and some cannot. The aim of this paper is to close the gaps to obtain comparable results for general bounded symmetric domains. In particular, we show that a Toeplitz operator on the Bergman space $A^p_ν$ is Fredholm if and only if all of its limit operators are invertible. Even more generally, we show that this is in fact true for all …
For a locally compact group $G$ we consider the algebra $CD(G)$ of convolution dominated operators on $L^{2}(G)$: An operator $A:L^2(G)\to L^2(G)$ is called convolution dominated if there exists $a\in L^1(G)$ such that for all $f \in L^2(G)$ $ |Af(x)| \leq a * |f| (x)$, for almost all $x \in G$. In the case of discrete groups those operators can be dealt with quite sufficiently if the group in question is rigidly symmetric. For non-discrete groups we investigate the subalgebra of regular convolution dominated operators $CD_{reg}(G)$. For amenable $G$ which is rigidly symmetric as a discrete gr…
Let $G$ and $H$ be locally compact groups with fixed two-side-invariant Haar measures. A polyhomomorphism $G\to H$ is a closed subgroup $R\subset G\times H$ with a fixed Haar measure, whose marginals on $G$ and $H$ are dominated by the Haar measures on $G$ and $H$. A polyhomomorphism can be regarded as a multi-valued map sending points to sets equipped with 'uniform' measures. For polyhomomorphsisms $G\to H$, $H\to K$ there is a well-defined product $G\to K$. The set of polyhomomorphisms $G\to H$ is a metrizable compact space with respect to the Chabauty--Bourbaki topology and the product is s…
In the first half of this text we explore the interrelationships between the abstract theory of limit operators (see e.g. the recent monographs of Rabinovich, Roch & Silbermann and Lindner) and the concepts and results of the generalised collectively compact operator theory introduced by Chandler-Wilde and Zhang. We build up to results obtained by applying this generalised collectively compact operator theory to the set of limit operators of an operator $A$. In the second half of this text we study bounded linear operators on the generalised sequence space $\ell^p(\Z^N,U)$, where $p\in [1,\inf…
