This is the first in a series of papers math.AG/0503029, math.AG/0410267, math.AG/0410268 on "configurations" in an abelian category A. Given a finite partially ordered set (I,<), an (I,<)-configuration (σ,ι,π) is a finite collection of objects σ(J) and morphisms ι(J,K) or π(J,K) : σ(J) --> σ(K) satisfying some axioms, where J,K are subsets of I. Configurations describe how an object X in A decomposes into subobjects, and are especially useful for studying stability conditions on A.
This paper defines and motivates the idea of configurations, and explains some natural operations upon them -- subconfigurations, quotient configurations, refinements, improvements and substitution. Then we study moduli spaces of (I,<)-configurations in A, using the theory of Artin stacks. We prove well-behaved moduli stacks exist when A is an abelian category of coherent sheaves or vector bundles on a projective K-scheme P, or of representations of a quiver Q. We define many natural 1-morphisms between the moduli stacks, some of which are representable or of finite type.
The sequels will apply these results to construct and study infinite-dimensional algebras associated to a quiver Q, and to define systems of invariants of a projective K-scheme P that "count" (semi)stable coherent sheaves and satisfy interesting identities.
This paper has been withdrawn, because I have merged it with paper I of the series, math.AG/0312190. The main results of this paper now appear in sections 7-9 of the revised version of math.AG/0312190, with shortened and improved proofs.
This note is a survey on the basic aspects of moduli theory along with some examples. In that respect, one of the purposes of this current document is to understand how the introduction of stacks circumvents the non-representability problem of the corresponding moduli functor $\mathcal{F}$ by using the 2-category of stacks. To this end, we shall briefly revisit the basics of 2-category theory and present a 2-categorical version of Yoneda's lemma.
Witten's gauged linear sigma model [Wi1] is one of the universal frameworks or structures that lie behind stringy dualities. Its A-twisted moduli space at genus 0 case has been used in the Mirror Principle [L-L-Y] that relates Gromov-Witten invariants and mirror symmetry computations. In this paper the A-twisted moduli stack for higher genus curves is defined and systematically studied. It is proved that such a moduli stack is an Artin stack. For genus 0, it has the A-twisted moduli space of [M-P] as the coarse moduli space. The detailed proof of the regularity of the collapsing morphism by Ju…
We attempt to develop a general algebro-geometric study of the moduli stack of commutative, 1-parameter formal Lie groups. We emphasize the pro-algebraic structure of this stack: it is the inverse limit, over varying n, of moduli stacks of n-buds, and these latter stacks are algebraic. Our main results pertain to aspects of the height stratification relative to fixed prime p on the stacks of buds and formal Lie groups. We conclude with a largely expository account of some foundational material on limits in bicategories.
We define the moduli problem of Hitchin pairs over Deligne-Mumford Stack and prove this moduli problem is represented by a separated and locally finitely presented algebraic space, which is considered as the moduli space of Hitchin pairs over Deligne-Mumford stack.
We give an explicit groupoid presentation of certain stacks of vector bundles on formal neighborhoods of rational curves inside algebraic surfaces. The presentation involves a Möbius type action of an automorphism group on a space of extensions.
In this paper we give a construction of algebraic (Artin) stacks endowed with a modular map onto the moduli stack of n-pointed stable curves of genus g, for g greater than 2. These stacks are smooth, irreducible and have dimension 4g-3+n, yielding a geometrically meaningful compactification of the degree d universal Picard stack over the moduli stack of smooth curves with marked points.
We develop the theory of associating moduli spaces with nice geometric properties to arbitrary Artin stacks generalizing Mumford's geometric invariant theory and tame stacks.
We generalize the construction of M. Lieblich for the compactification of the moduli stack of $\PGL_r$-bundles on algebraic spaces to the moduli stack of Tanaka-Thomas $\PGL_r$-Higgs bundles on algebraic schemes. The method we use is the moduli stack of Higgs version of Azumaya algebras. In the case of smooth surfaces, we obtain a virtual fundamental class on the moduli stack of $\PGL_r$-Higgs bundles. An application to the Vafa-Witten invariants is discussed.
We determine the Artin-Mazur étale homotopy types of moduli stacks of polarised abelian schemes using transcendental methods and derive some arithmetic properties of the étale fundamental groups of these moduli stacks. Finally we analyse the Torelli morphism between the moduli stacks of algebraic curves and principally polarised abelian schemes from an étale homotopy point of view.
We consider the moduli problem of stable maps from a Riemann surface into a supermanifold; in twistor-string theory, this is the instanton moduli space. By developing the algebraic geometry of supermanifolds to include a treatment of superstacks we prove that such moduli problems, under suitable conditions, give rise to Deligne-Mumford superstacks (where all of these objects have natural definitions in terms of supergeometry). We make some observations about the properties of these moduli superstacks, as well as some remarks about their application in physics and their associated Gromov-Witten…
We give an alternate formulation of pseudo-coherence over an arbitrary derived stack X. The full subcategory of pseudo-coherent objects forms a stable sub-infinity-category of the derived category associated to X. Using relative Tor-amplitude we define a derived stack classifying pseudo-coherent objects. For reasonable base schemes, this classifies the bounded derived category. In the case that X is a projective derived scheme flat over the base, we show the moduli is locally geometric and locally of almost finite type. Using this result, we prove the existence of a derived motivic Hall algebr…
In this paper, we define $Λ$-quot-functors on Deligne-Mumford stacks. We prove that the $Λ$-quot-functor is representable by an algebraic space. Then, we construct the moduli space of $Λ$-modules on a projective Deligne-Mumford stack. We prove that this moduli space is a quasi-projective scheme.
Here we calculate the Chern classes of ${\bar {\mathcal M}}_{g,n}$, the moduli stack of stable n-pointed curves. In particular, we prove that such classes lie in the tautological ring.
We construct explicitly a finite cover of the moduli stack of compact Riemann surfaces with a given group of symmetries by a smooth quasi-projective variety.
We show the equivalence between two notions of log moduli stacks which appear in literatures. In particular, we generalize M.Olsson's theorem of representation of log algebraic stacks and answer a question posted by him (\cite{Ol4} 3.5.3). As an application, we obtain several fundamental results of algebraic log stacks which resemble to those in algebraic stacks.
We introduce a new moduli stack, called the Serre stable moduli stack, which corresponds to studying families of point objects in an abelian category with a Serre functor. This allows us in particular, to re-interpret the classical derived equivalence between most concealed-canonical algebras and weighted projective lines by showing they are induced by the universal sheaf on the Serre stable moduli stack. We explain why the method works by showing that the Serre stable moduli stack is the tautological moduli problem that allows one to recover certain nice stacks such as weighted projective lin…
We view the moduli space of semistable sheaves on a K3 surface as a global quotient stack, and compute its cotangent complex in terms of the universal sheaf on the Quot scheme. Relevant facts on the classical and reduced Atiyah classes are reviewed. We also define the notion of a symplectic stack, and show that it includes all moduli stacks of semistable sheaves on K3 surfaces.
The notion of $m/Γ$-pointed stable curves is introduced. It should be viewed as a generalization of the notion of m-pointed stable curves of a given genus, where the labels of the marked points are only determined up to the action of a group of permutations $Γ$. The classical moduli spaces and moduli stacks are generalized to this wider setting. Finally, an explicit construction of the new moduli stack of $m/Γ$-pointed stable curves as a quotient stack is given.
Recent results in geometric invariant theory (GIT) for non-reductive linear algebraic group actions allow us to stratify quotient stacks of the form [X/H], where X is a projective scheme and H is a linear algebraic group with internally graded unipotent radical acting linearly on X, in such a way that each stratum [S/H] has a geometric quotient S/H. This leads to stratifications of moduli stacks (for example, sheaves over a projective scheme) such that each stratum has a coarse moduli space.
There is a well-known stratification of the moduli space $M_g$ of Deligne-Mumford stable curves of genus $g$ by the loci of stable curves with a fixed number $i$ of nodes, where $i \le 3g-3$. The associated moduli stack ${\cal M}_g$ admits an analogous stratification. Our main objects of study are those one-dimensional substacks of the moduli stack, which are the irreducible components of the stratum corresponding to stable curves with exactly $3g-4$ nodes. We describe these substacks explicitely as quotient stacks, and relate them to other, and simpler, moduli stacks of (permutation classes o…
In this paper, we study the geometric invariant theory on algebraic spaces, and construct te moduli spaces of $\mathcal{H}$-semistable sheaves on projective Deligne-Mumford stacks over algebraic spaces $S$. We prove that this moduli space is projective over $S$ as an algebraic space.
We study the geometry of the moduli stack of vector bundles of fixed rank and degree over an algebraic curve by introducing a filtration made of open substacks build from $(k, l)$-stable vector bundles. $(k, l)$-stability was introduced by Narasimhan and Ramanan to study the geometry of the coarse moduli space of stable bundles. We will exhibit the stacky picture and analyse the geometric and cohomological properties of the moduli stacks of $(k, l)$-stable vector bundles. For particular pairs $(k, l) $ of integers we also show that these moduli stacks admit coarse moduli spaces and we discuss …
The aim of the present paper is to study the (abstract) Picard group and the Picard group scheme of the moduli stack of stable pointed curves over an arbitrary scheme. As a byproduct, we compute the Picard groups of the moduli stack of stable or smooth pointed curves over a field of characteristic different from two.
We consider the stack of stable curves of genus g with a given dual graph and we give an explicit desingularization of its closure in the moduli stack of stable curves. We study in particular the one-dimensional substack of curves with at least 3g-4 nodes.
We compute the Picard group of the moduli stack of stable hyperelliptic curves of any genus, exhibiting explicit and geometrically meaningful generators and relations.
We prove a representability theorem for moduli functors of framed torsion-free sheaves on nonsingular complex projective surfaces, using formal geometry along a curve in the surface. This has as a consequence that a certain restriction morphism for moduli stacks of sheaves has fibers that are schemes.
Let X be a geometrically irreducible smooth projective curve over a field k. We describe the algebra of endomorphisms of indecomposable unstable vector bundles over X of rank 2 and degree d. Fixing some numerical invariants, namely the Harder-Narasimhan type and the dimension of the algebra of endomorphisms, we construct algebraic stacks and moduli schemes for such bundles.
We define Reichstein transforms to be certain birational transformations of Artin stacks with good moduli spaces. Our main technical result is that the Reichstein transform of an Artin toric stack is again an Artin toric stack. This leads to our main theorem which states that for Artin toric stacks there is a canonical sequence of Reichstein transforms which produces a Deligne-Mumford toric stack. When the good moduli space of an Artin toric stack is projective our procedure can be interpreted in terms of Kirwan's partial desingularization of geometric invariant theory quotients.
We find upper bounds for the essential dimension of various moduli stacks of $\sln$-bundles over a curve. When $n$ is a prime power, our calculation computes the essential dimension of the stack of stable bundles exactly and the essential dimension is not equal to the dimension in this case.
We show that the moduli stacks of semistable sheaves on smooth projective varieties are analytic locally on their coarse moduli spaces described in terms of representations of the associated Ext-quivers with convergent relations. When the underlying variety is a Calabi-Yau 3-fold, our result describes the above moduli stacks as critical locus analytic locally on the coarse moduli spaces. The results in this paper will be applied to the wall-crossing formula of Gopakumar-Vafa invariants defined by Maulik and the author.
The moduli stack of Deligne-Mumford stable curves of genus g admits a stratification, so that the number of nodes of the curves belonging to one stratum is constant. The irreducible components of the stratum corresponding to curves with exactly 3g-4 nodes are one-dimensional substacks. We show how they can be related to moduli stacks of (permutation classes of) pointed stable curves. Using this, we construct all components of this stratum in a new way as quotient stacks.
This mainly expository text translates into stack language the proof of King and Schofield for the rationality of moduli schemes of vector bundles on a curve in the coprime case. An appendix summarizes some basic properties of the relevant moduli stacks.
In this article, we classify the irreducible components of moduli stacks of torsion free sheaves of rank 2 on K3 surfaces of Picard number 1. For ruled surfaces, the components of moduli stacks of torsion free sheaves were classified by C.Walter. Moreover, by virtue of our result, we classify the irreducible components of Brill-Noether loci of Hilbert schemes of points on K3 surfaces.
We generalize Luna's fundamental lemma to smooth morphisms between stacks with good moduli spaces. We also give a precise condition for when it holds for non-smooth morphisms and versions for coherent sheaves and complexes. This generalizes earlier results by Alper, Abramovich--Temkin, Edidin and Nevins.
Let X be an irreducible affine T-variety. We consider families of affine stable toric T-varieties over X and give a description of the corresponding moduli space as the quotient stack of an open subscheme in a certain toric Hilbert scheme under the action of a torus.
We define and construct the real analytic moduli stack of pluriharmonic bundles on a compact Kaehler manifold X, and show how this is equipped with Hodge and quaternionic structures. This stack maps to the de Rham moduli stack, giving rise to preferred sections of the Deligne-Hitchin twistor stack. We then show how the non-abelian mixed Hodge structures on Malcev homotopy types X can be extended to objects over the pluriharmonic moduli stack.
We construct certain rational functions (modular units) on the moduli stack of Drinfeld shtukas. The divisors of these rational functions are supported on horospherical divisors of the moduli stack. The key to our construction is a vanishing theorem for shtukas with zeros and poles satisfying certain conditions. Using deformation theory, we calculate the divisors of these rational functions.
This is the first in a projected series of three papers in which we construct the second flip in the log minimal model program for $\bar{M}_g$. We introduce the notion of a weakly proper algebraic stack, which may be considered as an abstract characterization of those mildly non-separated moduli problems encountered in the context of Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT), and develop techniques for proving that a stack is weakly proper without the usual semistability analysis of GIT. We define a sequence of moduli stacks of curves involving nodes, cusps, tacnodes, and ramphoid cusps, and use the af…
This survey discusses hyperbolicity properties of moduli stacks and generalisations of the Shafarevich Hyperbolicity Conjecture to higher dimensions. It concentrates on methods and results that relate moduli theory with recent progress in higher dimensional birational geometry.
We introduce frameworks for constructing global derived moduli stacks associated to a broad range of problems, bridging the gap between the concrete and abstract conceptions of derived moduli. Our three approaches are via differential graded Lie algebras, via cosimplicial groups, and via quasi-comonoids, each more general than the last. Explicit examples of derived moduli problems addressed here are finite schemes, polarised projective schemes, torsors, coherent sheaves, and finite group schemes.
We describe the moduli stack of Gushel-Mukai varieties as a global quotient stack and its coarse moduli space as the corresponding GIT quotient. The construction is based on a comprehensive study of the relation between this stack and the stack of Lagrangian data; roughly speaking, we show that the former is a generalized root stack of the latter. As an application, we define the period map for Gushel-Mukai varieties and construct some complete nonisotrivial families of smooth Gushel-Mukai varieties. In an appendix, we describe a generalization of the root stack construction used in our approa…
Let $\clX$ a projective stack over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic 0. Let $\clE$ be a generating sheaf over $\clX$ and $\clO_X(1)$ a polarization of its coarse moduli space $X$. We define a notion of pair which is the datum of a non vanishing morphism $Γ\otimes\clE\to \clF$ where $Γ$ is a finite dimensional $k$ vector space and $\clF$ is a coherent sheaf over $\clX$. We construct the stack and the moduli space of semistable pairs. The notion of semistability depends on a polynomial parameter and it is dictated by the GIT construction of the moduli space.
Generalizing the well-known Shafarevich hyperbolicity conjecture, it has been conjectured by Viehweg that a quasi-projective manifold that admits a generically finite morphism to the moduli stack of canonically polarized varieties is necessarily of log general type. Given a quasi-projective surface that maps to the moduli stack, we employ extension properties of logarithmic pluri-forms to establish a strong relationship between the moduli map and the minimal model program of the surface. As a result, we can describe the fibration induced by the moduli map quite explicitly. A refined affirmativ…
We establish that the geometric action of the absolute Galois group on the étale fundamental group of moduli spaces of curves induces a Galois action on its stack inertia subgroups, and that this action is given by cyclotomy conjugacy. This result extends the special case of inertia without étale factorisation previously established by the authors. It is here obtained in the general case by comparing deformations of Galois actions. Since the stack inertia corresponds to the first level of the stack stratification of the space, this results, by analogy with the arithmetic of the Deligne-Mumford…
This paper is the second in a series of four papers aiming to describe the (almost integral) Chow ring of $\Mbar_3$, the moduli stack of stable curves of genus $3$. In this paper, we introduce the moduli stack $\Htilde_g^r$ of hyperelliptic $A_r$-stable curves and generalize the theory of hyperelliptic stable curves to hyperelliptic $A_r$-stable curves. In particular, we prove that $\Htilde_g^r$ is a smooth algebraic stacks which can be described using cyclic covers of twisted curves of genus $0$ and it embeds in $\Mtilde_g^r$ (the moduli stack of $A_r$-stable curves) as the closure of the mod…
