The notion of $m/Γ$-pointed stable curves is introduced. It should be viewed as a generalization of the notion of m-pointed stable curves of a given genus, where the labels of the marked points are only determined up to the action of a group of permutations $Γ$. The classical moduli spaces and moduli stacks are generalized to this wider setting. Finally, an explicit construction of the new moduli stack of $m/Γ$-pointed stable curves as a quotient stack is given.
The aim of the present paper is to study the (abstract) Picard group and the Picard group scheme of the moduli stack of stable pointed curves over an arbitrary scheme. As a byproduct, we compute the Picard groups of the moduli stack of stable or smooth pointed curves over a field of characteristic different from two.
In this paper we give a complete description of the integral Chow ring of the stack $\mathscr{H}_{g,1}$ of 1-pointed hyperelliptic curves, lifting relations and generators from the Chow ring of $\mathscr{H}_g$. We also give a geometric interpretation for the generators.
In the theory of the moduli-stacks of n-pointed stable curves, there are two fundamental functors, contraction and stabilization. These functors are constructed in [4], where they are used to show that the various \bar{M_{g,n}}'s are DM-stacks. We give here a more elementary and more complete proof of the fact that stabilization, as it is defined in [4], is a functor. The fact that contraction is a functor inverse to the stabilization-functor we think is satisfactorily treated in [4]. In a very recent publication [1] there is a proof based on the proof in [4], but it is adapted to the case of …
Starting with a vertex algebra $V$, a finite group $G$ of automorphisms of $V$, and a suitable collection of twisted $V$--modules, we construct (twisted) $D$--modules on the stack of pointed $G$--covers, introduced by Jarvis, Kaufmann, and Kimura. The fibers of these sheaves are spaces of orbifold conformal blocks defined in joint work with Edward Frenkel. The key ingredient is a $G$--equivariant version of the Virasoro uniformization theorem.
For any smooth connected linear algebraic group G over an algebraically closed field k, we describe the Picard group of the universal moduli stack of principal G-bundles over pointed smooth k-projective curves.
Here we calculate the Chern classes of ${\bar {\mathcal M}}_{g,n}$, the moduli stack of stable n-pointed curves. In particular, we prove that such classes lie in the tautological ring.
We classify the Deligne-Mumford stacks M compactifying the moduli space of smooth $n$-pointed curves of genus one under the condition that the points of M represent Gorenstein curves with distinct markings. This classification uncovers new moduli spaces $\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{1,n}(Q)$, which we may think of coming from an enrichment of the notion of level used to define Smyth's $m$-stable spaces. Finally, we construct a cube complex of Artin stacks interpolating between the $\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{1,n}(Q)$'s, a multidimensional analogue of the wall-and-chamber structure seen in the log minimal model …
This paper is a sequel to the paper by A. Losev and Yu. Manin [LoMa1], in which new moduli stacks $\bar{L}_{g,S}$ of pointed curves were introduced. They classify curves endowed with a family of smooth points divided into two groups, such that the points of the second group are allowed to coincide. The homology of these stacks form components of the extended modular operad whose combinatorial models are further studied in [LoMa2]. In this paper the basic geometric properties of $\bar{L}_{g,S}$ are established using the notion of weighted stable pointed curves introduced recently by B. Hassett.…
In this paper we study the moduli stack ${\mathcal U}_{1,n}^{ns}$ of curves of arithmetic genus 1 with n marked points, forming a nonspecial divisor. In arXiv:1511.03797 this stack was realized as the quotient of an explicit scheme $\widetilde{\mathcal U}_{1,n}^{ns}$, affine of finite type over ${\Bbb P}^{n-1}$, by the action of ${\Bbb G}_m^n$ . Our main result is an explicit description of the corresponding GIT semistable loci in $\widetilde{\mathcal U}_{1,n}^{ns}$. This allows us to identify some of the GIT quotients with some of the modular compactifications of ${\mathcal M}_{1,n}$ defined …
In this paper we give a construction of algebraic (Artin) stacks endowed with a modular map onto the moduli stack of n-pointed stable curves of genus g, for g greater than 2. These stacks are smooth, irreducible and have dimension 4g-3+n, yielding a geometrically meaningful compactification of the degree d universal Picard stack over the moduli stack of smooth curves with marked points.
We prove that given any $n$-pointed prestable curve $C$ of genus $g$ with linearly reductive automorphism group ${\rm Aut}(C)$, there exists an ${\rm Aut}(C)$-equivariant miniversal deformation of $C$ over an affine variety $W$. In other words, we prove that the algebraic stack $\mathfrak{M}_{g,n}$ parametrizing $n$-pointed prestable curves of genus $g$ has an étale neighborhood of $[C]$ isomorphic to the quotient stack $[W / {\rm Aut}(C)]$.
The moduli stack of Deligne-Mumford stable curves of genus g admits a stratification, so that the number of nodes of the curves belonging to one stratum is constant. The irreducible components of the stratum corresponding to curves with exactly 3g-4 nodes are one-dimensional substacks. We show how they can be related to moduli stacks of (permutation classes of) pointed stable curves. Using this, we construct all components of this stratum in a new way as quotient stacks.
We investigate moduli stacks of pointed chains of projective lines related to the Losev-Manin moduli spaces and show that these moduli stacks coincide with certain toric stacks which can be described in terms of the Cartan matrices of root systems of type A. We also consider variants of these stacks related to root systems of type B and C.
There is a well-known stratification of the moduli space $M_g$ of Deligne-Mumford stable curves of genus $g$ by the loci of stable curves with a fixed number $i$ of nodes, where $i \le 3g-3$. The associated moduli stack ${\cal M}_g$ admits an analogous stratification. Our main objects of study are those one-dimensional substacks of the moduli stack, which are the irreducible components of the stratum corresponding to stable curves with exactly $3g-4$ nodes. We describe these substacks explicitely as quotient stacks, and relate them to other, and simpler, moduli stacks of (permutation classes o…
In this short note, we propose a definition of complete Hurwitz schemes (and stacks) in mixed characteristic. We follow an idea of R. Pandharipande, and define the complete Hurwitz stack as a substack of stable maps of degree d of nodal pointed curves of genus g to the universal curve over the moduli stack of stable pointed curves of genus h. This substack is simply the closure of the locus of Hurwitz covers in characteristic 0. We describe in detail the reduction modulo 2 of the complete Hurwitz stack of genus 1 double covers of the projective line. The result is wilder than you would imagine…
The goal of the present paper is to construct a smooth compactification of the moduli superstack classifying pointed $\mathcal{N} =1$ SUSY (= $\text{SUSY}_1$) curves. This construction is based on the Abramovich-Jarvis-Chiodo compactification of the moduli stack classifying spin curves. First, we give a general framework of a theory of log superschemes (or more generally, log superstacks). Then, we introduce the notion of a pointed (stable) log twisted $\text{SUSY}_1$ curve; it may be thought of as a logarithmic and twisted generalization of the classical notion of a pointed $\text{SUSY}_1$ cu…
We study new effective curve classes on the moduli space of stable pointed rational curves given by the fixed loci of subgroups of the permutation group action. We compute their numerical classes and provide a strategy for writing them as effective linear combinations of F-curves, using Losev-Manin spaces and toric degeneration of curve classes.
In this paper we study fiber type morphisms between moduli spaces of pointed rational curves. Via Kapranov's description we are able to prove that the only such morphisms are forgetful maps. This allow us to show that the Automorphism group of $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ is the permutation group on $n$ elements as soon as $n\geq 5$.
We introduce a sequence of isolated curve singularities, the elliptic m-fold points, and an associated sequence of stability conditions, generalizing the usual definition of Deligne-Mumford stability. For every pair of integers 0<m<n, we prove that the moduli problem of n-pointed m-stable curves of arithmetic genus one is representable by a proper irreducible Deligne-Mumford stack. We also consider weighted variants of these stability conditions, and construct the corresponding moduli stacks. In forthcoming work, we will prove that these stacks have projective coarse moduli and use the resulti…
In this paper I present a new geometric approach to the factorization rule for generalised theta functions. Let $X$ be an irreducible projective nodal curve with one singularity and let $Y$ be its normalization. Recently I have constructed the moduli stack $GVB(X)$ of rank $n$ Gieseker vector bundles on $X$ and have shown that its normalization is a locally trivial fibration over the moduli stack $VB(Y)$ of vector bundles on $Y$, where the fibre is a canonical compactification of $Gl_n$. In this paper I prove a canonical direct sum decomposition of the space of global sections of a power of th…
In this work we describe the Chen-Ruan cohomology of the moduli stacks of smooth and stable genus 2 pointed curves, and its algebraic counterpart: the stringy Chow ring. In the first half of the paper we compute the additive structure of the Chen-Ruan cohomology ring for the moduli stack of stable pointed genus 2 curves, describing it as a rationally graded vector space. In the second part we give generators for the even Chen--Ruan cohomology ring as an algebra on the ordinary cohomology.
This paper is the first in a series of four papers aiming to describe the (almost integral) Chow ring of $\bar{\mathcal{M}}_3$, the moduli stack of stable curves of genus $3$. In this paper, we introduce the moduli stack $\tilde{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}^r$ of $n$-pointed $A_r$-stable curves and extend some classical results about $\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ to $\tilde{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}^r$, namely the existence of the contraction morphism. Moreover, we describe the normalization of the locally closed substack of $\tilde{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}^r$ parametrizing curves with $A_h$-singularities for a fixed $h…
We construct a new compactification of the moduli space of maps from pointed nonsingular projective stable curves to a nonsingular projective variety with prescribed ramification indices at the points. It is shown to be a proper Deligne-Mumford stack equipped with a natural virtual fundamental class.
In this paper, we give generating functions for the Betti numbers of $\bar{M}_{0,0}({G}(k,n),d)$, the moduli stack of zero pointed genus zero degree $d$ stable maps to the Grassmannian ${G}(k,n)$ for $d=2$ and 3.
We study the singular homology (with field coefficients) of the moduli stack of stable n-pointed complex curves of genus g (the Deligne-Mumford compactification). Each of its irreducible boundary components determines via the Pontrjagin-Thom construction a map to a certain infinite loop space whose homology is well understood. We show that these maps are surjective on homology in a range of degrees proportional to the genus. This implies the existence of many new torsion classes in the homology of the moduli stack.
Let ${\cal M}_{g,n}$, for $2g-2+n>0$, be the moduli stack of $n$-pointed, genus $g$, smooth curves. For a family $C\to S$ of such curves over a connected base and a geometric point $ξ$ on $S$, the associated monodromy representation is the induced homomorphism $π_1(S,ξ)\toπ_1({\cal M}_{g,n},[C_ξ])$ on algebraic fundamental groups. It is well known that, if $S$ is irreducible, reduced and locally of finite type over a field $k$ of characteristic zero, the fibre $C_ξ$ and the corresponding monodromy representation determine the relative isomorphism class of the family. In the first part of the p…
This article treats various aspects of the geometry of the moduli of r-spin curves and its compactification. Generalized spin curves, or r-spin curves, are a natural generalization of 2-spin curves (algebraic curves with a theta-characteristic), and have been of interest lately because of the similarities between the intersection theory of these moduli spaces and that of the moduli of stable maps. In particular, these spaces are the subject of a remarkable conjecture of E. Witten relating their intersection theory to the Gelfand-Dikii (rth KdV) heirarchy. There is also a W-algebra conjecture f…
Let $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,A[n]}$ be the Hassett moduli stack of weighted stable curves, and let $\overline{M}_{g,A[n]}$ be its coarse moduli space. These are compactifications of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ and $M_{g,n}$ respectively, obtained by assigning rational weights $A = (a_{1},...,a_{n})$, $0< a_{i} \leq 1$ to the markings; they are defined over $\mathbb{Z}$, and therefore over any field. We study the first order infinitesimal deformations of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,A[n]}$ and $\overline{M}_{g,A[n]}$. In particular, we show that $\overline{M}_{0,A[n]}$ is rigid over any field, if $g\ge…
Let $\widetilde{\cal M}_{g,n}$, for $2g-2+n>0$, be the moduli stack of $n$-pointed, genus $g$, stable complex curves of compact type. Various characterizations and properties are obtained of both the algebraic and topological fundamental groups of the stack $\widetilde{\cal M}_{g,n}$. Let $Γ_{g,n}$, for $2g-2+n>0$, be the Teichmüller group associated with a compact Riemann surface of genus $g$ with $n$ points removed $S_{g,n}$, i.e. the group of homotopy classes of diffeomorphisms of $S_{g,n}$ which preserve the orientation of $S_{g,n}$ and a given order of its punctures. Let $K_{g,n}$ be the …
Let G be a split reductive group. We introduce the moduli problem of "bundle chains" parametrizing framed principal G-bundles on chains of lines. Any fan supported in a Weyl chamber determines a stability condition on bundle chains. Its moduli stack provides an equivariant toroidal compactification of G. All toric orbifolds may be thus obtained. Moreover, we get a canonical compactification of any semisimple G, which agrees with the wonderful compactification in the adjoint case, but which in other cases is an orbifold. Finally, we describe the connections with Losev-Manin's spaces of weighted…
This paper presents a survey on formal moduli problems. It starts with an introduction to pointed formal moduli problems and a sketch of proof of a Theorem (independently proven by Lurie and Pridham) which gives a precise mathematical formulation for Drinfeld's derived deformation theory philosophy, which gives a correspondence between formal moduli problems and differential graded Lie algebras. The second part deals with Lurie's general theory of deformation contexts, which we present in a slightly different way than the original paper, emphasising the (more symmetric) notion of Koszul dualit…
In his fundamental work on the stack of stable n-pointed genus g curves, Finn F. Knudsen introduced the concept of a stably reflexive module in order to prove a key technical lemma. We propose an alternative definition and generalise the results in the appendix to his article. Then we give a `coordinate free' generalisation of his lemma, generalise a construction used in Knudsen's proof concerning versal families of pointed algebras, and show that Knudsen's stabilisation construction works for plane curve singularities. In addition we prove approximation theorems generalising Cohen-Macaulay ap…
We construct certain orbifold compactifications of the moduli stack of pointed stable curves over $\mathbb C$ and study their fundamental groups by means of their quantum representations. This enables to construct interesting Kähler groups and to settle most of the candidates for a counter-example to the Shafarevich conjecture on holomorphic convexity proposed in 1998 by Bogomolov and Katzarkov, using TQFT representations of the mapping class groups.
