Let ${\cal M}_{g,n}$, for $2g-2+n>0$, be the moduli stack of $n$-pointed, genus $g$, smooth curves. For a family $C\to S$ of such curves over a connected base and a geometric point $ξ$ on $S$, the associated monodromy representation is the induced homomorphism $π_1(S,ξ)\toπ_1({\cal M}_{g,n},[C_ξ])$ on algebraic fundamental groups. It is well known that, if $S$ is irreducible, reduced and locally of finite type over a field $k$ of characteristic zero, the fibre $C_ξ$ and the corresponding monodromy representation determine the relative isomorphism class of the family. In the first part of the paper, it is shown that suitable quotients of this representation suffice.
These results are then applied to show that the monodromy representation associated to a family $C\to S$ of $n$-pointed, genus $g$, stable curves of compact type, i.e. the induced homomorphism $π_1(S,ξ)\toπ_1(\widetilde{\cal M}_{g,n},[C_ξ])$ (where, $\widetilde{\cal M}_{g,n}$ denotes the moduli stack of $n$-pointed, genus $g$, stable curves of compact type), characterizes trivial and isotrivial families.
Let $U$ be an open subscheme of a normal, irreducible, locally noetherian scheme $S$ over a field $k$ of characteristic zero and let $C\ra U$ be a family of stable curves of compact type. In the second part of the paper, a monodromy criterion is given for extending $C\to U$ to a family of stable curves of compact type over $S$.
We speculate on the relationship between the solvable monodromy extension (SME) property and log canonical models. A motivating example is the moduli space of smooth curves which, by earlier work, is known to have this SME property. In this case the maximal SME compactification is the moduli space of stable nodal curves which coincides with its log canonical model.
Necessary and sufficient conditions are given (in terms of monodromy) for extending a family of smooth curves over an open subset U of S to a family of stable curves over S. More precisely, we introduce the abelian monodromy extension (AME) property and show that the standard Deligne-Mumford compactification is the unique, maximal AME compactification of the moduli space of curves. We also show that the Baily-Borel compactification is the unique, maximal projective AME compactification of the moduli space of abelian varieties.
We study tuples of matrices with rigidity index two in $\Sp_4(\mathbb{C})$, which are potentially induced by differential operators of Calabi-Yau type. The constructions of those monodromy tuples via algebraic operations and middle convolutions and the related constructions on the level differential operators lead to previously known and new examples.
We prove that in any characteristic the formation of the monodromy group of a $\mathscr{D}$-module commutes with the extension of the ground field, extending a result of Gabber for separable extensions.
In this paper, we give the rigidity theorem for a log morphism as an extension of a fixed scheme morphism. We also give several applications of the rigidity theorem.
Suslin proved that for an extension K/k of algebraically closed fields the induced maps K_m(k)[n] --> K_m(K)[n] and K_m(k)/n ---> K_m(K)/n for the higher K-groups are isomorphisms, where A[n] is the subgroup of n-torsion in an abelien group, and A/n = A/nA, by definition. In this paper we generalize this to other functors and other field extensions.
We use the mixed-twist construction of Doran and Malmendier to obtain a multi-parameter family of K3 surfaces of Picard rank $ρ\ge 16$. Upon identifying a particular Jacobian elliptic fibration on its general member, we determine the lattice polarization and the Picard-Fuchs system for the family. We construct a sequence of restrictions that lead to extensions of the polarization by two-elementary lattices. We show that the Picard-Fuchs operators for the restricted families coincide with known resonant hypergeometric systems. Second, for the one-parameter mirror families of deformed Fermat hyp…
Let K be a complete discrete valuation field of mixed characteristic (0,p) with algebraically closed residue field, and let f: Y --> P^1 be a three-point G-cover defined over K, where G has a cyclic p-Sylow subgroup P. We examine the stable model of f, in particular, the minimal extension K^{st}/K such that the stable model is defined over K^{st}. Our main result is that, if g(Y) \geq 2, the ramification indices of f are prime to p, and |P| = p^n, then the p-Sylow subgroup of Gal(K^{st}/K) has exponent dividing p^{n-1}. This extends work of Raynaud in the case that |P| = p.
We study a variant of the Neron models over curves which is recently found by the second named author in a more general situation using the theory of Hodge modules. We show that its identity component is a certain open subset of an iterated blow-up along smooth centers of the Zucker extension of the family of intermediate Jacobians and that the total space is a complex Lie group over the base curve and is Hausdorff as a topological space. In the unipotent monodromy case, the image of the map to the Clemens extension coincides with the Neron model defined by Green, Griffiths and Kerr. In the ca…
Jun-Muk Hwang and Ngaiming Mok have proved the rigidity of irreducible Hermitian symmetric spaces of compact type under Kaehler degeneration. I adapt their argument to the algebraic setting in positive characteristic, where cominuscule homogeneous varieties serve as an analogue of Hermitian symmetric spaces. The main result gives an explicit (computable in terms of Schubert calculus) lower bound on the characteristic of the base field, guaranteeing that a smooth projective family with cominuscule homogeneous generic fibre is isotrivial. The bound depends only on the type of the generic fibre, …
Let D be a central division algebra over a field F. We study in this note the rigidity of the motivic decompositions of the Severi-Brauer varieties of D, with respect to the ring of coefficients and to the base field. We first show that if the ring of coefficient is a field, these decompositions only depend on its characteristic. In a second part we show that if D remains division over a field extension E/F, the motivic decompositions of several Severi-Brauer varieties of D remain the same when extending the scalars to E.
In this article we prove that the numerical Grothendieck group of every smooth proper dg category is invariant under primary field extensions, and also that the mod-n algebraic K-theory of every dg category is invariant under extensions of separably closed fields. As a byproduct, we obtain an extension of Suslin's rigidity theorem, as well as of Yagunov-Ostvaer's equivariant rigidity theorem, to singular varieties. Among other applications, we show that base-change along primary field extensions yields a faithfully flat morphism between noncommutative motivic Galois groups. Finally, along the …
Let $(K,v)$ be a valued field and let $(K^h,v^h)$ be the henselization determined by the choice of an extension of $v$ to an algebraic closure of $K$. Consider an embedding $v(K^*)\hookrightarrowΛ$ of the value group into a divisible ordered abelian group. Let $T(K,Λ)$, $T(K^h,Λ)$ be the trees formed by all $Λ$-valued extensions of $v$, $v^h$ to the polynomial rings $K[x]$, $K^h[x]$, respectively. We show that the natural restriction mapping $T(K^h,Λ)\to T(K,Λ)$ is an isomorphism of posets. As a consequence, the restriction mapping $T_v\to T_{v^h}$ is an isomorphism of posets too, where $T_v$,…
We study horizontal semistable and horizontal de Rham representations of the absolute Galois group of a certain smooth affinoid over a p-adic field. In particular, we prove that a horizontal de Rham representation becomes horizontal semistable after a finite extension of the base field. As an application, we show that every de Rham local system on a smooth rigid analytic variety becomes horizontal semistable etale locally around every classical point. We also discuss potentially crystalline loci of de Rham local systems and cohomologically potentially good reduction loci of smooth proper morph…
Let $X$ be a geometrically irreducible smooth projective curve defined over a field $k$. Assume that $X$ has a $k$-rational point; fix a $k$-rational point $x\in X$. From these data we construct an affine group scheme ${\mathcal G}_X$ defined over the field $k$ as well as a principal ${\mathcal G}_X$-bundle $E_{{\mathcal G}_X}$ over the curve $X$. The group scheme ${\mathcal G}_X$ is given by a ${\mathbb Q}$--graded neutral Tannakian category built out of all strongly semistable vector bundles over $X$. The principal bundle $E_{{\mathcal G}_X}$ is tautological. Let $G$ be a linear algebraic gr…
Let $ϕ$ be a non-isotrivial family of Drinfeld A-modules of rank r in generic characteristic with a suitable level structure over a connected smooth algebraic variety X. Suppose that the endomorphism ring of $ϕ$ is equal to A. Then we show that the closure of the analytic fundamental group of X in $SL_r(\mathbb{A}_F^f)$ is open, where $\mathbb{A}_F^f$ denotes the ring of finite adeles of the quotient field F of A. From this we deduce two further results: (1) If X is defined over a finitely generated field extension of F, the image of the arithmetic étale fundamental group of X on the adelic Ta…
Given a projective surface and a generic projection to the plane, the braid monodromy factorization (and thus, the braid monodromy type) of the complement of its branch curve is one of the most important topological invariants, stable on deformations. From this factorization, one can compute the fundamental group of the complement of the branch curve, either in C^2 or in CP^2. In this article, we show that these groups, for the Hirzebruch surface F_{1,(a,b)}, are almost-solvable. That is - they are an extension of a solvable group, which strengthen the conjecture on degeneratable surfaces.
Let K be a field of characteristic p>0, and let q be a power of p. We determine all polynomials f in K[t]\K[t^p] of degree q(q-1)/2 such that the Galois group of f(t)-u over K(u) has a transitive normal subgroup isomorphic to PSL_2(q), subject to a certain ramification hypothesis. As a consequence, we describe all polynomials f in K[t], of degree not a power of p, such that f is functionally indecomposable over K but f decomposes over an extension of K. Moreover, except for one ramification setup (which is treated in the companion paper arxiv:0707.1837), we describe all indecomposable polynomi…
Let X be a smooth curve over a finite field of characteristic p, let E be a number field, and consider an E-compatible system of lisse sheaves on the curve X. For each place lambda of E not lying over p, the lambda-component of the system is a lisse E_lambda-sheaf on X, whose associated arithmetic monodromy group is an algebraic group over the local field E_lambda. We use Serre's theory of Frobenius tori and Lafforgue's proof of Deligne's conjecture to show that when the E-compatible system is semisimple and pure of some integer weight, the isomorphism type of the identity component of these m…
For a strictly semistable log scheme $Y$ over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p$ we investigate the canonical Čech spectral sequence $(C)_T$ abutting to the Hyodo-Kato (log crystalline) cohomology $H_{crys}^*(Y/T)_{\mathbb{Q}}$ of $Y$ and beginning with the log convergent cohomology of its various component intersections $Y^i$. We compare the filtration on $H_{crys}^*(Y/T)_{\mathbb{Q}}$ arising from $(C)_T$ with the monodromy operator $N$ on $H_{crys}^*(Y/T)_{\mathbb{Q}}$. We also express $N$ through residue maps and study relations with singular cohomology. If $Y$ lifts to a proper str…
Using the sieve for Frobenius, we show that, in a certain sense, the roots of the L-functions of "most" algebraic curves over finite fields do not satisfy any non-trivial (linear or multiplicative) rational dependency relations. This can be seen as an analogue of conjectures of linear independence among ordinates of zeros of L-functions over number fields. As a corollary, we find, for "most" pairs of distinct algebraic curves over a finite field, the limiting distribution of the (suitably normalized) difference between the number of rational points over extensions of the ground field. The meth…
In this paper, we establish a criterion for an overconvergent isocrystal on a smooth variety over a field of characteristic $p>0$ to extend logarithmically to its smooth compactification whose complement is a strict normal crossing divisor. This is a generalization of a result of Kedlaya, who treated the case of unipotent monodromy. Our result is regarded as a $p$-adic analogue of the theory of canonical extension of regular singular integrable connections on smooth varieties of characteristic 0.
Let $R$ be a complete discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ with field of fractions $K$ containing the $p$-th roots of unity. This paper is concerned with semi-stable models of $p$-cyclic covers of the projective line $C \la \PK$. We start by providing a new construction of a semi-stable model of $C$ in the case of an equidistant branch locus. If the cover is given by the Kummer equation $Z^p=f(X_0)$ we define what we called the monodromy polynomial ${\mathcal L}(Y)$ of $f(X_0)$; a polynomial with coefficients in $K$. Its zeros are key to obtaining a semi-stable model of $C$.…
Let $R$ be a complete discrete valuation ring with perfect residue field $k$ of positive characteristic $p$ and field of fractions $K$ of characteristic 0. In this paper we consider a $K$-1-motive $M_K$ as in [Ra] and its associated Barsotti-Tate group. This last does not in general extend to a Barsotti-Tate group over $R$. However, with some assumptions, it extends to a logarithmic Barsotti-Tate group over $R$. This follows from [Ra] and Kato's results on finite logarithmic group schemes. Once chosen a uniformizing parameter $π$ of $R$, any logarithmic Barsotti-Tate group over $R$ is describe…
