Moduli of vector bundles on stacky curves behave similarly to moduli of vector bundles on curves, except there are additional numerical invariants giving many different notions of stability. We apply the existence criterion for good moduli spaces of stacks to show that the moduli stack of semistable vector bundles on a stacky curve has a proper good moduli space. We moduli-theoretically prove that a natural determinantal line bundle on this moduli space is ample, thus proving this moduli space is projective. Our methods give effective bounds for when a power of this line bundle is basepoint-free. As a special case, we obtain new and effective constructions of moduli spaces of parabolic bundles.
By means of analytic methods the quasi-projectivity of the moduli space of algebraically polarized varieties with a not necessarily reduced complex structure is proven including the case of non-uniruled polarized varieties.
We prove that every proper subspace of the moduli space of stable surfaces with fixed volume over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>5 is projective. As a consequence we also deduce that the same moduli space is projective over Z[1/30] modulo two conjectural local properties of the moduli functor.
We prove a strengthening of Kollár's Ampleness Lemma and use it to prove that any proper coarse moduli space of stable log-varieties of general type is projective. We also prove subadditivity of log-Kodaira dimension for fiber spaces whose general fiber is of log general type.

We prove that, for a natural class of Bridgeland stability conditions on $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ and the blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^2$ at a point, the moduli spaces of Bridgeland semistable objects are projective. Our technique is to find suitable regions of stability conditions with hearts that are (after "rotation") equivalent to representations of a quiver. The helix and tilting theory is well-behaved on Del Pezzo surfaces and we conjecture that this program (begun in arXiv:1203.0316) runs successfully for all Del Pezzo surfaces, and the analogous Bridgeland moduli spaces are projectiv…
We investigate geometric embeddings among several classes of stacky fans and algorithms, e.g., to compute their homology. Interesting cases arise from moduli spaces of tropical curves. Specifically, we show that the tropical honeycomb curves form a contractible sub-locus in the moduli of all tropical $K_4$-curves.
The purpose of this paper and its sequel (Toric Stacks II) is to introduce and develop a theory of toric stacks which encompasses and extends the notions of toric stacks defined in [Laf02, BCS05, FMN10, Iwa09, Sat12, Tyo12], as well as classical toric varieties. In this paper, we define a \emph{toric stack} as a quotient of a toric variety by a subgroup of its torus (we also define a generically stacky version). Any toric stack arises from a combinatorial gadget called a \emph{stacky fan}. We develop a dictionary between the combinatorics of stacky fans and the geometry of toric stacks, stress…
We construct moduli spaces of semistable objects on an Enriques surface for generic Bridgeland stability condition and prove their projectivity. We further generalize classical results about moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on an Enriques surface to their Bridgeland counterparts. Using Bayer and Macrì's construction of a natural nef divisor varying with the stability condition, we begin a systematic exploration of the relation between wall-crossing on the Bridgeland stability manifold and the minimal model program for these moduli spaces. We give three applications of our machinery to obtai…
The moduli space of Higgs bundles can be defined as a quotient of an infinite-dimensional space. Moreover, by the Kuranishi slice method, it is equipped with the structure of a normal complex space. In this paper, we will use analytic methods to show that the moduli space is quasi-projective. In fact, following Hausel's method, we will use the symplectic cut to construct a normal and projective compactification of the moduli space, and hence prove the quasi-projectivity. The main difference between this paper and Hausel's is that the smoothness of the moduli space is not assumed.
We construct a family of nef divisor classes on every moduli space of stable complexes in the sense of Bridgeland. This divisor class varies naturally with the Bridgeland stability condition. For a generic stability condition on a K3 surface, we prove that this class is ample, thereby generalizing a result of Minamide, Yanagida, and Yoshioka. Our result also gives a systematic explanation of the relation between wall-crossing for Bridgeland-stability and the minimal model program for the moduli space. We give three applications of our method for classical moduli spaces of sheaves on a K3 surfa…
We give a moduli-theoretic treatment of the existence and properties of moduli spaces of semistable quiver representations, avoiding methods from geometric invariant theory. Using the existence criteria of Alper--Halpern-Leistner--Heinloth, we show that for many stability functions, the stack of semistable representations admits an adequate moduli space, and prove that this moduli space is proper over the moduli space of semisimple representations. We construct a natural determinantal line bundle that descends to a semiample line bundle on the moduli space and provide new effective bounds for …
In this note, we prove that there is a canonical continuous Hermitian metric on the CM line bundle over the proper moduli space $\bar{\mathcal{M}}$ of smoothable Kahler-Einstein Fano varieties. The curvature of this metric is the Weil-Petersson current, which exists as a positive (1,1)-current on $\bar{\mathcal{M}}$ and extends the canonical Weil-Petersson current on the moduli space parametrizing smooth Kahler-Einstein Fano manifolds $\mathcal{M}$. As a consequence, we show that the CM line bundle is nef and big on $\bar{\mathcal{M}}$ and its restriction on $\mathcal{M}$ is ample.
We generalize a compactification technique due to C. Simpson in the context of $\mathbb{G}_m$-actions over the ground field of complex numbers, to the case of a universally Japanese base ring. We complement this generalized compactification technique so that it can sometimes yield projectivity results for these compactifications. We apply these projectivity results to the Hodge, de Rham, and Dolbeault moduli spaces for curves, with special regards to ground fields of positive characteristic.
We perform a study of the moduli space of framed torsion-free sheaves on Hirzebruch surfaces by using localization techniques. We discuss some general properties of this moduli space by studying it in the framework of Huybrechts-Lehn theory of framed modules. We classify the fixed points under a toric action on the moduli space, and use this to compute the Poincare polynomial of the latter. This will imply that the moduli spaces we are considering are irreducible. We also consider fractional first Chern classes, which means that we are extending our computation to a stacky deformation of a Hir…
Let H be a semisimple algebaric group and let X be a smooth projective curve defined over an algebraically closed field k. In the first part of this paper we show that the moduli of semistable principal H-bundles exists once given a "low-height" representation of H. We also show the projectivity of the moduli space if p > ψ, where ψis a representation theoritic index. The projectivity is a consequence of a semistable reduction theorem. The irreducibility of the moduli space of semistable H-bundles for simple and simply connected group is obtained as a consequence.
The central result of this paper is an identification of the shifted Cartier dual of the moduli stack $\mathcal{M}_{\mathfrak{g}}(C)$ of $\widetilde{G}$-Higgs bundles on $C$ of arbitrary degree (modulo shifts by $Z(\widetilde{G})$) with a quotient of the Langlands dual stack $\mathcal{M}_{^L\mathfrak{g}}(C)$. Via hyperkähler rotation, this may equivalently be viewed as the identification of an SYZ fibration relating Hitchin systems for arbitrary Langlands dual semisimple groups, coupled to nontrivial finite $B$-fields. As a corollary certain self-dual stacks $\frac{\mathcal{M}_{\mathfrak{g}}(C…
We show that every smooth toric variety (and many other algebraic spaces as well) can be realized as a moduli space for smooth, projective, polarized varieties. Some of these are not quasi--projective. This contradicts a recent paper (Quasi--projectivity of moduli spaces of polarized varieties, Ann. of Math. 159 (2004) 597--639.).
We study birational projective models of ${\mathcal M}_{2,2}$ obtained from the moduli space of curves with nonspecial divisors. We describe geometrically which singular curves appear in these models and show that one of them is obtained by blowing down the Weierstrass divisor in the moduli stack of ${\mathcal Z}$-stable curves $\overline{\mathcal M}_{2,2}({\mathcal Z})$ defined by Smyth. As a corollary, we prove projectivity of the coarse moduli space $\overline{M}_{2,2}({\mathcal Z})$.
We generalize the notion of multi-Gieseker semistability for coherent sheaves, introduced by Greb, Ross, and Toma, to quiver sheaves for a quiver $Q$. We construct coarse moduli spaces for semistable quiver sheaves using a functorial method that realizes these as subschemes of moduli spaces of representations of a twisted quiver, depending on $Q$, with relations. We also show the projectivity of the moduli space in the case when $Q$ has no oriented cycles. Finally, we investigate the parameter dependence of the moduli.
We study the geometry of the moduli stack of vector bundles of fixed rank and degree over an algebraic curve by introducing a filtration made of open substacks build from $(k, l)$-stable vector bundles. $(k, l)$-stability was introduced by Narasimhan and Ramanan to study the geometry of the coarse moduli space of stable bundles. We will exhibit the stacky picture and analyse the geometric and cohomological properties of the moduli stacks of $(k, l)$-stable vector bundles. For particular pairs $(k, l) $ of integers we also show that these moduli stacks admit coarse moduli spaces and we discuss …
In this paper, we examine stacky structures in Einstein's theory of gravity. In brief, we first give a construction of the moduli stack of solutions to (vacuum) Einstein field equations on $n$-dimensional spacetimes, with vanishing cosmological constant. Using a similar approach, we also study Einstein's gravity on families of manifolds and define another stack encoding this situation as well. Secondly, we focus on the gauge theoretical interpretation of 3D gravity and the concept of equivalence of 3D quantum gravity with gauge theory. By equivalence, we essentially mean the existence of an is…
Given a linear category over a finite field such that the moduli space of its objects is a smooth Artin stack (and some additional conditions) we give formulas for an exponential sum over the set of absolutely indecomposable objects and a stacky sum over the set of all objects of the category, respectively, in terms of the geometry of the cotangent bundle on the moduli stack. The first formula was inspired by the work of Hausel, Letellier, and Rodriguez-Villegas. It provides a new approach for counting absolutely indecomposable quiver representations, vector bundles with parabolic structure on…
The cherry on top of this stacky paper is the following: for any g>1 we give a finite group G such that the moduli space of connected admissible G-covers of genus g is a smooth, fine moduli space, which is a Galois cover of the moduli space of stable curves. The proof relies on methods introduced by Looijenga and Pikaart-De Jong, and on the theory of twisted G-covers, a theory announced without proofs in math.AG/9811059, section 3, and developed in the first few sections of this paper. This includes a moduli description of the normalization of the Harris-Mumford space of admissible covers, and…
We study the moduli space of metric graphs that arise from tropical plane curves. There are far fewer such graphs than tropicalizations of classical plane curves. For fixed genus $g$, our moduli space is a stacky fan whose cones are indexed by regular unimodular triangulations of Newton polygons with $g$ interior lattice points. It has dimension $2g+1$ unless $g \leq 3$ or $g = 7$. We compute these spaces explicitly for $g \leq 5$.
Starting from a collection of line bundles on a projective toric orbifold X, we introduce a stacky analogue of the classical linear series. Our first main result extends work of King by building moduli stacks of refined representations of labelled quivers. We associate one such stack to any collection of line bundles on X to obtain our notion of a stacky linear series; as in the classical case, X maps to the ambient stack by evaluating sections of line bundles in the collection. As a further application, we describe a finite sequence of GIT wall crossings between [A^n/G] and G-Hilb(A^n) for a …
This paper lays the foundation for determining the Kodaira dimension of the projectivized strata of Abelian differentials with prescribed zero and pole orders in large genus. We work with the moduli space of multi-scale differentials constructed in [BCGGM2] which provides an orbifold compactification of these strata. We establish the projectivity of the moduli space of multi-scale differentials, describe the locus of canonical singularities, and compute a series of effective divisor classes. Moreover, we exhibit a perturbation of the canonical class which allows the corresponding pluri-canonic…
We construct a canonical Hausdorff complex analytic moduli space of Fano manifolds with Kähler-Ricci solitons. This naturally enlarges the moduli space of Fano manifolds with Kähler-Einstein metrics, which was constructed by Odaka and Li-Wang-Xu. We discover a moment map picture for Kähler-Ricci solitons, and give complex analytic charts on the topological space consisting of Kähler-Ricci solitons, by studying differential geometric aspects of this infinite dimensional moment map. Some stacky words and arguments on Gromov-Hausdorff convergence help to glue them together in the holomorphic mann…
We establish P=W and PI=WI conjectures for character varieties with structural group $\mathrm{GL}_n$ and $\mathrm{SL}_n$ which admit a symplectic resolution, i.e. for genus 1 and arbitrary rank, and genus 2 and rank 2. We formulate the P=W conjecture for resolution, and prove it for symplectic resolutions. We exploit the topology of birational and quasi-étale modifications of Dolbeault moduli spaces of Higgs bundles. To this end, we prove auxiliary results of independent interest, like the construction of a relative compactification of the Hodge moduli space for reductive algebraic groups, and…
We show that pairs $(X,Y)$ of 1-spherical objects in $A_\infty$-categories, such that the morphism space ${\rm Hom}(X,Y)$ is concentrated in degree 0, can be described by certain noncommutative orders over (possibly stacky) curves. In fact, we establish a more precise correspondence at the level of isomorphism of moduli spaces which we show to be affine schemes of finite type over ${\Bbb Z}$.
We construct the moduli spaces of tropical curves and tropical principally polarized abelian varieties, working in the category of (what we call) stacky fans. We define the tropical Torelli map between these two moduli spaces and we study the fibers (tropical Torelli theorem) and the image of this map (tropical Schottky problem). Finally we determine the image of the planar tropical curves via the tropical Torelli map and we use it to give a positive answer to a question raised by Namikawa on the compactified classical Torelli map.
This paper is a combinatorial and computational study of the moduli space of tropical curves of genus g, the moduli space of principally polarized tropical abelian varieties, and the tropical Torelli map. These objects were introduced recently by Brannetti, Melo, and Viviani. Here, we give a new definition of the category of stacky fans, of which the aforementioned moduli spaces are objects and the Torelli map is a morphism. We compute the poset of cells of tropical M_g and of the tropical Schottky locus for genus at most 5. We show that tropical A_g is Hausdorff, and we also construct a finit…
We compute the (stable) étale cohomology of $\mathrm{Hom}_{n}(C, \mathcal{P}(\vecλ))$, the moduli stack of degree $n$ morphisms from a smooth projective curve $C$ to the weighted projective stack $\mathcal{P}(\vecλ)$, the latter being a stacky quotient defined by $\mathcal{P}(\vecλ) := \left[\mathbb{A}^N-\{0\}/\mathbb{G}_m\right]$, where $\mathbb{G}_m$ acts by weights $\vecλ = (λ_0, \cdots, λ_N) \in \mathbb{Z}^N_{+}$. Our key ingredient is formulating and proving the étale cohomological descent over the category $ΔS$, the symmetric (semi)simplicial category. An immediate arithmetic consequence…
