This paper is a combinatorial and computational study of the moduli space of tropical curves of genus g, the moduli space of principally polarized tropical abelian varieties, and the tropical Torelli map. These objects were introduced recently by Brannetti, Melo, and Viviani. Here, we give a new definition of the category of stacky fans, of which the aforementioned moduli spaces are objects and the Torelli map is a morphism. We compute the poset of cells of tropical M_g and of the tropical Schottky locus for genus at most 5. We show that tropical A_g is Hausdorff, and we also construct a finite-index cover for A_3 which satisfies a tropical-type balancing condition. Many different combinatorial objects, including regular matroids, positive semidefinite forms, and metric graphs, play a role.
We construct the moduli spaces of tropical curves and tropical principally polarized abelian varieties, working in the category of (what we call) stacky fans. We define the tropical Torelli map between these two moduli spaces and we study the fibers (tropical Torelli theorem) and the image of this map (tropical Schottky problem). Finally we determine the image of the planar tropical curves via the tropical Torelli map and we use it to give a positive answer to a question raised by Namikawa on the compactified classical Torelli map.
Algebraic curves have a discrete analogue in finite graphs. Pursuing this analogy we prove a Torelli theorem for graphs. Namely, we show that two graphs have the same Albanese torus if and only if the graphs obtained from them by contracting all separating edges are 2-isomorphic. In particular, the strong Torelli theorem holds for 3-connected graphs. Next, using the correspondence between compact tropical curves and metric graphs, we prove a tropical Torelli theorem giving necessary and sufficient conditions for two tropical curves to have the same principally polarized tropical Jacobian. Fina…
We give a description of the tropical variety of univariate polynomials of degree n having two double roots. As a set, it is given as the union of three types of maximal cones of dimension n-1, where only cones of two of these types are cones of the secondary fan of {0,...,n}. Through Kapranov's theorem, this goal is achieved by a careful study of the possible valuations of the elementary symmetric functions of the roots of a polynomial with two double root. Despite its apparent simplicity, the computation of the tropical Severi variety has both combinatorial and arithmetic ingredients.
Let $g_1, ..., g_k$ be tropical polynomials in $n$ variables with Newton polytopes $P_1, ..., P_k$. We study combinatorial questions on the intersection of the tropical hypersurfaces defined by $g_1, ..., g_k$, such as the $f$-vector, the number of unbounded faces and (in case of a curve) the genus. Our point of departure is Vigeland's work who considered the special case $k=n-1$ and where all Newton polytopes are standard simplices. We generalize these results to arbitrary $k$ and arbitrary Newton polytopes $P_1, ..., P_k$. This provides new formulas for the number of faces and the genus in t…
We investigate the combinatorics of real double Hurwitz numbers with real positive branch points using the symmetric group. Our main focus is twofold. First, we prove correspondence theorems relating these numbers to counts of tropical real covers and study the structure of real double Hurwitz numbers with the help of the tropical count. Second, we express the numbers as counts of paths in a subgraph of the Cayley graph of the symmetric group. By restricting to real double Hurwitz numbers with real positive branch points, we obtain a concise translation of the counting problem in terms of tupl…
The tropical Stiefel map associates to a tropical matrix A its tropical Pluecker vector of maximal minors, and thus a tropical linear space L(A). We call the L(A)s obtained in this way Stiefel tropical linear spaces. We prove that they are dual to certain matroid subdivisions of polytopes of transversal matroids, and we relate their combinatorics to a canonically associated tropical hyperplane arrangement. We also explore a broad connection with the secondary fan of the Newton polytope of the product of all maximal minors of a matrix. In addition, we investigate the natural parametrization of …
The Dressian Dr(k,n) parametrizes all tropical linear spaces, and it carries a natural fan structure as a subfan of the secondaryfan of the hypersimplex Δ(k,n). We explore the combinatorics of the rays of Dr(k,n), that is, the most degenerate tropical planes, for arbitrary k and n. This is related to a new rigidity concept for configurations of n-k points in the tropical (k-1)-torus. Additional conditions are given for k=3. On the way, we compute the entire fan Dr(3,8).
This paper is about the combinatorics of finite point configurations in the tropical projective space or, dually, of arrangements of finitely many tropical hyperplanes. Moreover, arrangements of finitely many tropical halfspaces can be considered via coarsenings of the resulting polyhedral decompositions of $\mathbb{R}^d$. This leads to natural cell decompositions of the tropical projective space $\mathbb{TP}_{\min}^{d-1}$. Our method is to employ a known class of ordinary convex polyhedra naturally associated with weighted digraphs. This way we can relate to and use results from combinatorics…
We define tropical analogues of the notions of linear space and Plucker coordinate and study their combinatorics. We introduce tropical analogues of intersection and dualization and define a tropical linear space built by repeated dualization and transverse intersection to be constructible. Our main result that all constructible tropical linear spaces have the same f-vector and are ``series-parallel''. We conjecture that this f-vector is maximal for all tropical linear spaces with equality precisely for the series-parallel tropical linear spaces. We present many partial results towards this co…
Given integers $g \geq 0$, $n \geq 1$, and a vector $w \in (\mathbb{Q} \cap (0, 1])^n$ such that ${2g - 2 + \sum w_i > 0}$, we study the topology of the moduli space $Δ_{g, w}$ of $w$-stable tropical curves of genus $g$ with volume 1. The space $Δ_{g, w}$ is the dual complex of the divisor of singular curves in Hassett's moduli space of $w$-stable genus $g$ curves $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g, w}$. When $g \geq 1$, we show that $Δ_{g, w}$ is simply connected for all values of $w$. We also give a formula for the Euler characteristic of $Δ_{g, w}$ in terms of the combinatorics of $w$.
Speyer recognized that matroids encode the same data as a special class of tropical linear spaces and Shaw interpreted tropically certain basic matroid constructions; additionally, Frenk developed the perspective of tropical linear spaces as modules over an idempotent semifield. All together, this provides bridges between the combinatorics of matroids, the algebra of idempotent modules, and the geometry of tropical linear spaces. The goal of this paper is to strengthen and expand these bridges by systematically developing the idempotent module theory of matroids. Applications include a geometr…
We establish a fundamental connection between the geometric RSK correspondence and GL(N,R)-Whittaker functions, analogous to the well known relationship between the RSK correspondence and Schur functions. This gives rise to a natural family of measures associated with GL(N,R)-Whittaker functions which are the analogues in this setting of the Schur measures on integer partitions. The corresponding analogue of the Cauchy-Littlewood identity can be seen as a generalisation of an integral identity for GL(N,R)-Whittaker functions due to Bump and Stade. As an application, we obtain an explicit integ…
Finding the so-called characteristic numbers of the complex projective plane ${\mathbb C}P^2$ is a classical problem of enumerative geometry posed by Zeuthen more than a century ago. For a given $d$ and $g$ one has to find the number of degree $d$ genus $g$ curves that pass through a certain generic configuration of points and at the same time are tangent to a certain generic configuration of lines. The total number of points and lines in these two configurations is $3d-1+g$ so that the answer is a finite integer number. In this paper we translate this classical problem to the corresponding en…
In this paper we develop a combinatorial abstraction of tropical linear programming. This generalizes the search for a feasible point of a system of min-plus-inequalities. It is based on the polyhedral properties of triangulations of the product of two simplices and the combinatorics of the associated set of bipartite graphs with an additional sign information which we call a signed tropical matroid. We demonstrate the connections with the classical simplex method, mean payoff games and scheduling.
Tropical geometry with the max-plus algebra has been applied to statistical learning models over tree spaces because geometry with the tropical metric over tree spaces has some nice properties such as convexity in terms of the tropical metric. One of the challenges in applications of tropical geometry to tree spaces is the difficulty interpreting outcomes of statistical models with the tropical metric. This paper focuses on combinatorics of tree topologies along a tropical line segment, an intrinsic geodesic with the tropical metric, between two phylogenetic trees over the tree space and we sh…
Phylogenetic trees are the fundamental mathematical representation of evolutionary processes in biology. They are also objects of interest in pure mathematics, such as algebraic geometry and combinatorics, due to their discrete geometry. Although they are important data structures, they face the significant challenge that sets of trees form a non-Euclidean phylogenetic tree space, which means that standard computational and statistical methods cannot be directly applied. In this work, we explore the statistical feasibility of a pure mathematical representation of the set of all phylogenetic tr…
Higher Auslander algebras were introduced by Iyama generalizing classical concepts from representation theory of finite dimensional algebras. Recently these higher analogues of classical representation theory have been increasingly studied. Cyclic polytopes are classical objects of study in convex geometry. In particular, their triangulations have been studied with a view towards generalizing the rich combinatorial structure of triangulations of polygons. In this paper, we demonstrate a connection between these two seemingly unrelated subjects. We study triangulations of even-dimensional cycli…
