Witten's gauged linear sigma model [Wi1] is one of the universal frameworks or structures that lie behind stringy dualities. Its A-twisted moduli space at genus 0 case has been used in the Mirror Principle [L-L-Y] that relates Gromov-Witten invariants and mirror symmetry computations. In this paper the A-twisted moduli stack for higher genus curves is defined and systematically studied. It is proved that such a moduli stack is an Artin stack. For genus 0, it has the A-twisted moduli space of [M-P] as the coarse moduli space. The detailed proof of the regularity of the collapsing morphism by Jun Li in [L-L-Y: I and II] can be viewed as a natural morphism from the moduli stack of genus 0 stable maps to the A-twisted moduli stack at genus 0.
Due to the technical demand of stacks to physicists and the conceptual demand of supersymmetry to mathematicians, a brief introduction of each topic that is most relevant to the main contents of this paper is given in the beginning and the appendix respectively. Themes for further study are listed in the end.
We give an introduction to moduli stacks of gauged maps satisfying a stability conditition introduced by Mundet and Schmitt, and the associated integrals giving rise to gauged Gromov-Witten invariants. We survey various applications to cohomological and K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants.
We construct a mathematical theory of Witten's Gauged Linear Sigma Model (GLSM). Our theory applies to a wide range of examples, including many cases with non-Abelian gauge group. Both the Gromov-Witten theory of a Calabi-Yau complete intersection X and the Landau-Ginzburg dual (FJRW-theory) of X can be expressed as gauged linear sigma models. Furthermore, the Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence can be interpreted as a variation of the moment map or a deformation of GIT in the GLSM. This paper focuses primarily on the algebraic theory, while a companion article will treat the analytic th…
The Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence claims that the Gromov-Witten invariant of the quintic Calabi-Yau 3-fold should be related to the Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten invariant of the associated Landau-Ginzburg model via wall crossings. In this paper, we consider the stack of quasi-maps with a cosection and introduce sequences of stability conditions which enable us to interpolate between the moduli stack for Gromov-Witten invariants and the moduli stack for Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten invariants.
We provide a definition of Vafa-Witten invariants for projective surface Deligne-Mumford stacks, generalizing the construction of Tanaka-Thomas on the Vafa-Witten invariants for projective surfaces inspired by the S-duality conjecture. We give calculations for a root stack over a general type quintic surface, and quintic surfaces with ADE singularities. The relationship between the Vafa-Witten invariants of quintic surfaces with ADE singularities and the Vafa-Witten invariants of their crepant resolutions is also discussed.
This is the third in a sequence of papers in which we construct a quantum version of the Kirwan map from the equivariant quantum cohomology of a smooth polarized complex projective variety with the action of a connected complex reductive group to the orbifold quantum cohomology of its geometric invariant theory quotient, and prove that it intertwines the genus zero gauged Gromov-Witten potential with the genus zero Gromov-Witten graph potential. We also give a formula for a solution to the quantum differential equation in terms of a localized gauged potential. These results overlap with those …
A smooth GKM stack is a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack equipped with an action of an algebraic torus $T$, with only finitely many zero-dimensional and one-dimensional orbits. (i) We define the stacky GKM graph of a smooth GKM stack, under the mild assumption that any one-dimensional $T$-orbit closure contains at least one $T$ fixed point. The stacky GKM graph is a decorated graph which contains enough information to reconstruct the $T$-equivariant formal neighborhood of the 1-skeleton (union of zero-dimensional and one-dimensional $T$-orbits) as a formal smooth DM stack equipped with a $T$-actio…
In \cite{TY18}, higher genus Gromov--Witten invariants of the stack of $r$-th roots of a smooth projective variety $X$ along a smooth divisor $D$ are shown to be polynomials in $r$. In this paper we study the degrees and coefficients of these polynomials.
Motivated by the S-duality conjecture of Vafa-Witten, Tanaka-Thomas have developed a theory of Vafa-Witten invariants for projective surfaces using the moduli space of Higgs sheaves. Their definition and calculation prove the S-duality prediction of Vafa-Witten in many cases in the side of gauge group $SU(r)$. In this survey paper for ICCM-2019 we review the S-duality conjecture in physics by Vafa-Witten and the definition of Vafa-Witten invariants for smooth projective surfaces and surface Deligne-Mumford stacks. We make a prediction that the Vafa-Witten invariants for Deligne-Mumford surface…
This is a survey article for the mathematical theory of Witten's Gauged Linear Sigma Model, as developed recently by the authors. Instead of developing the theory in the most general setting, in this paper we focus on the description of the moduli.
We study orbifold Gromov--Witten invariants of the $r$-th root stack $X_{D,r}$ with a pair of mid-ages when $r$ is sufficiently large. We prove that genus $g$ invariants with a pair of mid-ages $k_a/r$ and $1-k_a/r$ are polynomials in $k_a$ and the $k_a^i$-coefficients are polynomials in $r$ with degree bounded by $2g$. Moreover, genus zero invariants with a pair of mid-ages are independent of the choice of mid-ages. As an application, we obtain an identity for relative Gromov--Witten theory which can be viewed as a modified version of the usual loop axiom.
We describe supersymmetric A-branes and B-branes in open N=(2,2) dynamically gauged nonlinear sigma models (GNLSM), placing emphasis on toric manifold target spaces. For a subset of toric manifolds, these equivariant branes have a mirror description as branes in gauged Landau-Ginzburg models with neutral matter. We then study correlation functions in the topological A-twisted version of the GNLSM, and identify their values with open Hamiltonian Gromov-Witten invariants. Supersymmetry breaking can occur in the A-twisted GNLSM due to nonperturbative open symplectic vortices, and we canonically B…
We introduce the notion of log R-maps, and develop a proper moduli stack of stable log R-maps in the case of a hybrid gauged linear sigma model. Two virtual cycles (canonical and reduced) are constructed for these moduli stacks. The main results are two comparison theorems relating the reduced virtual cycle to the cosection localized virtual cycle, as well as the reduced virtual cycle to the canonical virtual cycle. This sets the foundation of a new technique for computing higher genus Gromov-Witten invariants of complete intersections.
Given a smooth projective variety $X$ with a smooth nef divisor $D$ and a positive integer $r$, we construct an $I$-function, an explicit slice of Givental's Lagrangian cone, for Gromov--Witten theory of the root stack $X_{D,r}$. As an application, we also obtain an $I$-function for relative Gromov--Witten theory following the relation between relative and orbifold Gromov--Witten invariants.
We introduce a geometric completion of the stack of maps from stable marked curves to the quotient stack [point/GL(1)], and use it to construct some gauge-theoretic analogues of the Gromov-Witten invariants. We also indicate the generalization of these invariants to the quotient stacks [X/GL(1)], where X is a smooth proper complex algebraic variety.

We record an observation about the Witten indices in two families of gauged linear sigma models: the U(2) model for linear sections of Grassmannians, and the U(1) model for quadric complete intersections. We describe how the Witten indices are related to the Euler characteristics of the singular skew-symmetric or symmetric determinantal varieties featuring in the analysis of their opposite phases, and we discuss the extent to which these relationships can be reconciled with standard Born-Oppenheimer arguments.
We consider the question of how geometric structures of a Deligne-Mumford stack affect its Gromov-Witten invariants. The two geometric structures studied here are {\em gerbes} and {\em root constructions}. In both cases, we explain conjectures on Gromov-Witten theory for these stacks and survey some recent progress on these conjectures.
We examine a class of Calabi-Yau varieties of the determinantal type in Grassmannians and clarify what kind of examples can be constructed explicitly. We also demonstrate how to compute their genus-0 Gromov-Witten invariants from the analysis of the Givental $I$-functions. By constructing $I$-functions from the supersymmetric localization formula for the two dimensional gauged linear sigma models, we describe an algorithm to evaluate the genus-0 A-model correlation functions appropriately. We also check that our results for the Gromov-Witten invariants are consistent with previous results for …
We study open-closed orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau smooth toric Deligne-Mumford (DM) stacks (with possibly non-trivial generic stabilizers and semi-projective coarse moduli spaces) relative to Lagrangian branes of Aganagic-Vafa type. We present foundational materials of enumerative geometry of stable holomorphic maps from bordered orbifold Riemann surfaces to a 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau smooth toric DM stack with boundaries mapped into a Aganagic-Vafa brane. All genus open-closed Gromov-Witten invariants are defined by torus localization and depend on the choice …
We introduce a global Landau-Ginzburg model which is mirror to several toric Deligne-Mumford stacks and describe the change of the Gromov-Witten theories under discrepant transformations. We prove a formal decomposition of the quantum cohomology D-modules (and of the all-genus Gromov-Witten potentials) under a discrepant toric wall-crossing. In the case of weighted blowups of weak-Fano compact toric stacks along toric centres, we show that an analytic lift of the formal decomposition corresponds, via the $\widehatΓ$-integral structure, to an Orlov-type semiorthogonal decomposition of topologic…
This is the first in a sequence of papers in which we construct a quantum version of the Kirwan map from the equivariant quantum cohomology $QH_G(X)$ of a smooth complex projective variety X with the action of a connected complex reductive group $G$ to the orbifold quantum cohomology $QH(X//G)$ of its geometric invariant theory quotient $X//G$, and prove that it intertwines the genus zero gauged Gromov-Witten potential of X with the genus zero Gromov-Witten graph potential of $X//G$.
Given a smooth target curve $X$, we explore the relationship between Gromov-Witten invariants of $X$ relative to a smooth divisor and orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of the $r$-th root stack along the divisor. We proved that relative invariants are equal to the $r^0$-coefficient of the corresponding orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of $r$-th root stack for $r$ sufficiently large. Our result provides a precise relation between relative and orbifold invariants of target curves generalizing the result of Abramovich-Cadman-Wise to higher genus invariants of curves. Moreover, when $r$ is suffici…
We give an algebraic proof of properness of moduli stacks of gauged maps satisfying a stability conditition introduced by Mundet and Schmitt. The proof combines a git construction of Schmitt, properness for twisted stable maps by Abramovich-Vistoli, a variation of a boundedness argument due to Ciocan-Fontanine-Kim-Maulik, and a removal of singularities for bundles on surfaces in Colliot-Thélène-Sansuc.
Toroidal 3-orbifolds $(S^1)^6/G$, for $G$ a finite group, were some of the earliest examples of Calabi-Yau 3-orbifolds to be studied in string theory. While much mathematical progress towards the predictions of string theory has been made in the meantime, most of it has dealt with hypersurfaces in toric varieties. As a result, very little is known about curve-counting theories on toroidal orbifolds. In this paper, we initiate a program to study mirror symmetry and the Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau (LG/CY) correspondence for toroidal orbifolds. We focus on the simplest example $[E^3/μ_3],$ where $…
We generalize the construction of M. Lieblich for the compactification of the moduli stack of $\PGL_r$-bundles on algebraic spaces to the moduli stack of Tanaka-Thomas $\PGL_r$-Higgs bundles on algebraic schemes. The method we use is the moduli stack of Higgs version of Azumaya algebras. In the case of smooth surfaces, we obtain a virtual fundamental class on the moduli stack of $\PGL_r$-Higgs bundles. An application to the Vafa-Witten invariants is discussed.
