In this note, we propose the modular height of an abelian variety defined over a field of finite type over Q. Moreover, we prove its finiteness property.
A curve X over the field Q of rational numbers is modular if it is dominated by X_1(N) for some N; if in addition the image of its jacobian in J_1(N) is contained in the new subvariety of J_1(N), then X is called a new modular curve. We prove that for each integer g at least 2, the set of new modular curves over Q of genus g is finite and computable. For the computability result, we prove an algorithmic version of the de Franchis-Severi Theorem. Similar finiteness results are proved for new modular curves of bounded gonality, for new modular curves whose jacobian is a quotient of the new part …
Let K be a number field with ring of integers O, and let G be a finite-index subgroup of SL(n,O). Using a classical construction from the geometry of numbers and the theory of modular symbols, we exhibit a finite spanning set for the highest nonvanishing rational cohomology group of G.
We investigate certain finiteness questions that arise naturally when studying approximations modulo prime powers of p-adic Galois representations coming from modular forms. We link these finiteness statements with a question by K. Buzzard concerning p-adic coefficient fields of Hecke eigenforms. Specifically, we conjecture that for fixed N, m, and prime p with p not dividing N, there is only a finite number of reductions modulo p^m of normalized eigenforms on Γ_1(N). We consider various variants of our basic finiteness conjecture, prove a weak version of it, and give some numerical evidence.
We consider D-finite power series $f(z)=\sum a_n z^n$ with coefficients in a number field $K$. We show that there is a dichotomy governing the behaviour of $h(a_n)$ as a function of $n$, where $h$ is the absolute logarithmic Weil height. As an immediate consequence of our results, we have that either $f(z)$ is rational or $h(a_n)>[K:\mathbb{Q}]^{-1}\cdot \log(n)+O(1)$ for $n$ in a set of positive upper density and this is best possible when $K=\mathbb{Q}$.
Motivated by a result of van der Poorten and Shparlinski for univariate power series, Bell and Chen prove that if a multivariate power series over a field of characteristic 0 is D-finite and its coefficients belong to a finite set then it is a rational function. We extend and strengthen their results to certain power series whose coefficients may form an infinite set. We also prove that if the coefficients of a univariate D-finite power series `look like' the coefficients of a rational function then the power series is rational. Our work relies on the theory of Weil heights, the Manin-Mumford …
We study $p$-adic families of cohomological automorphic forms for ${\mathrm{GL}}(2)$ over imaginary quadratic fields and prove that families interpolating a Zariski-dense set of classical cuspidal automorphic forms only occur under very restrictive conditions. We show how to computationally determine when this is not the case and establish concrete examples of families interpolating only finitely many Bianchi modular forms.
We define modular equations in the setting of PEL Shimura varieties as equations describing Hecke correspondences, and prove upper bounds on their degrees and heights. This extends known results about elliptic modular polynomials, and implies complexity bounds for number-theoretic algorithms using these modular equations. In particular, we obtain tight degree bounds for modular equations of Siegel and Hilbert type for abelian surfaces.
We prove a rank-finiteness conjecture for modular categories: up to equivalence, there are only finitely many modular categories of any fixed rank. Our technical advance is a generalization of the Cauchy theorem in group theory to the context of spherical fusion categories. For a modular category $\mathcal{C}$ with $N=ord(T)$, the order of the modular $T$-matrix, the Cauchy theorem says that the set of primes dividing the global quantum dimension $D^2$ in the Dedekind domain $\mathbb{Z}[e^{\frac{2πi}{N}}]$ is identical to that of $N$.
In previous work, the first author, Ghioca, and the third author introduced a broad dynamical framework giving rise to many classical sequences from number theory and algebraic combinatorics. Specifically, these are sequences of the form $f(Φ^n(x))$, where $Φ\colon X\to X$ and $f\colon X\to\mathbb{P}^1$ are rational maps defined over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ and $x\in X(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})$ is a point whose forward orbit avoids the indeterminacy loci of $Φ$ and $f$. They conjectured that if the sequence is infinite, then $\limsup \frac{h(f(Φ^n(x)))}{\log n} > 0$. They also made a correspondi…
We study the finiteness of low degree points on certain modular curves and their Atkin--Lehner quotients, and, as an application, prove the modularity of elliptic curves over all but finitely many totally real fields of degree $5$. On the way, we prove a criterion for the finiteness of rational points of degree $5$ on a curve of large genus over a number field using the results of Abramovich--Harris and Faltings on subvarieties of Jacobians.
We prove that up to scaling there are only finitely many integral lattices L of signature (2,n) with n>20 or n=17 such that the modular variety defined by the orthogonal group of L is not of general type. In particular, when n>107, every modular variety defined by an arithmetic group for a rational quadratic form of signature (2,n) is of general type. We also obtain similar finiteness in n>8 for the stable orthogonal groups. As a byproduct we derive finiteness of lattices admitting reflective modular form of bounded vanishing order, which proves a conjecture of Gritsenko and Nikulin.
In this paper we study the Coleman-Oort conjecture for superelliptic curves, i.e., curves defined by affine equations $y^n=F(x)$ with $F$ a separable polynomial. We prove that up to isomorphism there are at most finitely many superelliptic curves of fixed genus $g\geq 8$ with CM Jacobians. The proof relies on the geometric structures of Shimura subvarieties in Siegel modular varieties and the stability properties of Higgs bundles associated to fibred surfaces.
We show that the set of complex points in the moduli space of polynomials of degree d corresponding to post-critically finite polynomials is a set of algebraic points of bounded height. It follows that for any B, the set of conjugacy classes of post-critically finite polynomials of degree d with coefficients of algebraic degree at most B is a finite and effectively computable set. In the case d=3 and B=1 we perform this computation. The proof of the main result comes down to finding a relation between the "naive" height on the moduli space, and Silverman's critical height.
We define the height of a motive over a number field. We show that if we assume the finiteness of motives of bounded height, Tate conjecture for the $p$-adic Tate module can be proved for motives with good reduction at $p$.
Let K be a function field, let f be a rational function of degree d at least 2 defined over K, and suppose that f is not isotrivial. In this paper, we show that a point P in P^1(Kbar) has f-canonical height zero if and only if P is preperiodic for f. This answers affirmatively a question of Szpiro and Tucker, and generalizes a recent result of Benedetto from polynomials to rational functions. We actually prove the following stronger result, which is a variant of the Northcott finiteness principle: there exists epsilon > 0 such that the set of points P in P^1(K) with f-canonical height at most …
We develop a strategy for bounding from above the height of rational points of modular curves with values in number fields, by functions which are polynomial in the curve's level. Our main technical tools come from effective Arakelov descriptions of modular curves and jacobians. We then fulfill this program in the following particular case: If $p$ is a not-too-small prime number, let $X_0 (p )$ be the classical modular curve of level $p$ over $\bf Q$. Assume Brumer's conjecture on the dimension of winding quotients of $J_0 (p)$. We prove that there is a function $b(p)=O(p^{5} \log p )$ (depend…
We discuss and relate finiteness conditions for certain field invariants which are studied in quadratic form theory. This includes the $u$-invariant, the reduced stability index and the symbol lengths for Galois cohomology groups with coefficients in $μ_2=\{+1,-1\}$, as well as a new invariant called the splitting height.
A modular form for an even lattice L of signature (2,n) is said to be 2-reflective if its zero divisor is set-theoretically contained in the Heegner divisor defined by the (-2)-vectors in L. We prove that there are only finitely many even lattices with n>6 which admit 2-reflective modular forms. In particular, there is no such lattice in n>25 except the even unimodular lattice of signature (2,26). This proves a conjecture of Gritsenko and Nikulin in the range n>6.
We show that the canonical height function defined by Silverman does not have the Northcott finiteness property in general. We develop a new canonical height function for monomial maps. In certain cases, this new canonical height function has nice properties.
Runge's method is a tool to figure out integral points on curves effectively in terms of height. This method has been generalised to varieties of any dimension, unfortunately its conditions of application are often too restrictive. In this paper, we provide a further generalisation intended to be more flexible while still effective, and exemplify its applicability by giving finiteness results for integral points on some Siegel modular varieties. As a special case, we obtain a totally explicit finiteness result for integral points on the Siegel modular variety $A_2(2)$.
We construct an integral model for Lubin-Tate curves as moduli of finite subgroups of formal deformations over complete Noetherian local rings. They are p-adic completions of the modular curves X_0(p) at a mod-p supersingular point. Our model is semistable in the sense that the only singularities of its special fiber are normal crossings. Given this model, we obtain a uniform presentation for the Dyer-Lashof algebra of Morava E-theories at height 2 as local moduli of power operations in elliptic cohomology.
We investigate modularity of elliptic curves over a general totally real number field, establishing a finiteness result for the set non-modular $j$-invariants. By analyzing quadratic points on some modular curves, we show that all elliptic curves over certain real quadratic fields are modular.
Let f: A^N \to A^N be a regular polynomial automorphism defined over a number field K. For each place v of K, we construct the v-adic Green functions G_{f,v} and G_{f^{-1},v} (i.e., the v-adic canonical height functions) for f and f^{-1}. Next we introduce for f the notion of good reduction at v, and using this notion, we show that the sum of v-adic Green functions over all v gives rise to a canonical height function for f that satisfies the Northcott-type finiteness property. Using previous results, we recover results on arithmetic properties of f-periodic points and non f-periodic points. We…
In this paper, we prove an explicit arithmetic intersection formula between arithmetic Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors and arithmetic CM cycles in a Hilbert modular surface over $\mathbb Z$. As applications, we obtain the first `non-abelian' Chowla-Selberg formula, which is a special case of Colmez's conjecture; an explicit arithmetic intersection formula between arithmetic Humbert surfaces and CM cycles in the arithmetic Siegel modular variety of genus two; Lauter's conjecture about the denominators of CM values of Igusa invariants; and a result about bad reductions of CM genus two curves.
For a prime m, let Phi_m be the classical modular polynomial, and let h(Phi_m) denote its logarithmic height. By specializing a theorem of Cohen, we prove that h(Phi_m) <= 6 m log m + 16 m + 14 sqrt m log m. As a corollary, we find that h(Phi_m) <= 6 m log m + 18 m also holds. A table of h(Phi_m) values is provided for m <= 3607.
We construct height functions defined stochastically on projective varieties equipped with endomorphisms, and we prove that these functions satisfy analogs of the usual properties of canonical heights. Moreover, we give a dynamical interpretation of the kernel of these stochastic height functions, and in the case of the projective line, we relate the size of this kernel to the Julia sets of the original maps. Finally, as an application, we establish the finiteness of some generalized Zsigmondy sets over global fields.
Given a family of abelian varieties over a quasiprojective smooth curve $T^0$ over a global field and a point $P$ on the generic fiber, we show that the Néron-Tate canonical height $h_{X_t}(P_t)$ of $P_t$ along each fiber is exactly equal to a Weil height $h_{\overline M}(t)$ given by an adelic metrized line bundle $\overline M$ on the unique smooth projective curve $T$ containing $T^0$. As a consequence, we show that a conjecture of Zhang on the finiteness of small-height specializations of $P$ is equivalent to $\overline M$ being big.
We give an asymptotic formula for the number of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ with bounded Faltings height. Silverman has shown that the Faltings height for elliptic curves over number fields can be expressed in terms of modular functions and the minimal discriminant of the elliptic curve. We use this to recast the problem as one of counting lattice points in a particular region in $\mathbb{R}^2$.
We define an "ample canonical height" for an endomorphism on a projective variety, which is essentially a generalization of the canonical heights for polarized endomorphisms introduced by Call--Silverman. We formulate a dynamical analogue of the Northcott finiteness theorem for ample canonical heights as a conjecture, and prove it for endomorphisms on varieties of small Picard numbers, abelian varieties, and surfaces. As applications, for the endomorphisms which satisfy the conjecture, we show the non-density of the set of preperiodic points over a fixed number field, and obtain a dynamical Mo…
We provide explicit bounds on the difference of heights of the $j$-invariants of isogenous elliptic curves defined over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$. The first one is reminiscent of a classical estimate for the Faltings height of isogenous abelian varieties, which is indeed used in the proof. We also use an explicit version of Silverman's inequality and isogeny estimates by Gaudron and Rémond. We give applications to the study of Vélu's formulas and of modular polynomials.
For $N\geq 3$, we show Tate's conjecture for the elliptic modular surface $E(N)$ of level $N$ over $\mathbb{F}_p$ for a prime $p$ satisfying $p\equiv 1\mod N$ outside of a set of primes of density zero. We also prove a strong form of Tate's conjecture for $E(N)$ over any finite field of characteristic $p$ prime to $N$ under the assumption that the formal Brauer group of $E(N)$ is of finite height.
Given a one-dimensional formal group of height 2, let E be the Morava E-theory spectrum associated to its universal deformation over the Lubin-Tate ring. By computing with moduli spaces of elliptic curves, we give an explicitation for an algebra of Hecke operators acting on E-cohomology. This leads to a vanishing result for Rezk's logarithmic cohomology operation on the units of E. It identifies a family of elements in the kernel with meromorphic modular forms whose Serre derivative is zero. Our calculation finds a connection to logarithms of modular units. In particular, we work out an action…
We extend the Faltings modular heights of abelian varieties to general arithmetic varieties and show direct relations with the Kahler-Einstein geometry, the Minimal Model Program, heights of Bost and Zhang, and give some applications. Along the way, we propose arithmetic Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture, an equivalence of a purely arithmetic property of variety and its metrical property, and partially confirm it.
In this paper, we give an explicit bound for the height of integral points on $X_0(p)$ by using a very explicit version of the Chevalley-Weil principle. We improve the bound given by Sha in \cite{sha2014bounding1}.
We give an effective proof of Faltings' theorem for curves mapping to Hilbert modular stacks over odd-degree totally real fields. We do this by giving an effective proof of the Shafarevich conjecture for abelian varieties of $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type over an odd-degree totally real field. We deduce for example an effective height bound for $K$-points on the curves $C_a : x^6 + 4y^3 = a^2$ ($a\in K^\times$) when $K$ is odd-degree totally real. (Over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ all hyperbolic hyperelliptic curves admit an étale cover dominating $C_1$.)
A formalism of arithmetic partial differential equations (PDEs) is being developed in which one considers several arithmetic differentiations at one fixed prime. In this theory solutions can be defined in algebraically closed p-adic fields. As an application we show that for at least two arithmetic directions every elliptic curve possesses a non-zero arithmetic PDE Manin map of order 1; such maps do not exist in the arithmetic ODE case. Similarly we construct and study "genuinely PDE" differential modular forms. As further applications we derive a Theorem of the Kernel and a Reciprocity Theore…

Given an elliptic curve with supersingular reduction at an odd prime p, Iovita and Pollack have generalised results of Kobayashi to define even and odd Coleman maps at p over Lubin-Tate extensions given by a formal group of height 1. We generalise this construction to modular forms of higher weights.
This is a book about computational aspects of modular forms and the Galois representations attached to them. The main result is the following: Galois representations over finite fields attached to modular forms of level one can, in almost all cases, be computed in polynomial time in the weight and the size of the finite field. As a consequence, coefficients of modular forms can be computed fast via congruences, as in Schoof's algorithm for the number of points of elliptic curves over finite fields. The most important feature of the proof of the main result is that exact computations involving …
Let K be a number field, let M be the Hilbert modular orbifold of K, and let m(q) be the probability measure uniformly supported on the cusp cross sections of M at height q. We generalize a method of Zagier and show that m(q) distributes uniformly with respect to the normalized Haar measure m on M as q tends to zero, and relate the rate by which m(q) approaches m to the Riemann hypothesis for the Dedekind zeta function of K.
