Let K be a function field, let f be a rational function of degree d at least 2 defined over K, and suppose that f is not isotrivial. In this paper, we show that a point P in P^1(Kbar) has f-canonical height zero if and only if P is preperiodic for f. This answers affirmatively a question of Szpiro and Tucker, and generalizes a recent result of Benedetto from polynomials to rational functions. We actually prove the following stronger result, which is a variant of the Northcott finiteness principle: there exists epsilon > 0 such that the set of points P in P^1(K) with f-canonical height at most epsilon is finite. Our proof is essentially analytic, making use of potential theory on Berkovich spaces to prove some new results about the dynamical Green's functions g_v(x,y) attached to f at each place v of K. For example, we show that every conjugate of f has bad reduction at v if and only if g_v(x,x) > 0 for all x in the Berkovich projective line over the completion of the algebraic closure of K_v. In an appendix, we show how a similar method can be used to give a new proof of the Mordell-Weil theorem for elliptic curves over K.
In this note, we propose the modular height of an abelian variety defined over a field of finite type over Q. Moreover, we prove its finiteness property.
We show that the set of complex points in the moduli space of polynomials of degree d corresponding to post-critically finite polynomials is a set of algebraic points of bounded height. It follows that for any B, the set of conjugacy classes of post-critically finite polynomials of degree d with coefficients of algebraic degree at most B is a finite and effectively computable set. In the case d=3 and B=1 we perform this computation. The proof of the main result comes down to finding a relation between the "naive" height on the moduli space, and Silverman's critical height.
We show that the canonical height function defined by Silverman does not have the Northcott finiteness property in general. We develop a new canonical height function for monomial maps. In certain cases, this new canonical height function has nice properties.
We consider D-finite power series $f(z)=\sum a_n z^n$ with coefficients in a number field $K$. We show that there is a dichotomy governing the behaviour of $h(a_n)$ as a function of $n$, where $h$ is the absolute logarithmic Weil height. As an immediate consequence of our results, we have that either $f(z)$ is rational or $h(a_n)>[K:\mathbb{Q}]^{-1}\cdot \log(n)+O(1)$ for $n$ in a set of positive upper density and this is best possible when $K=\mathbb{Q}$.
We prove the finiteness of Selmer groups attached to lifts of certain 2-dimensional mod p representations of the absolute Galois group of Q. The mod p representation can be either even or odd. The lifts considered are the ones that were proven to exist by the seond named author.
Motivated by a result of van der Poorten and Shparlinski for univariate power series, Bell and Chen prove that if a multivariate power series over a field of characteristic 0 is D-finite and its coefficients belong to a finite set then it is a rational function. We extend and strengthen their results to certain power series whose coefficients may form an infinite set. We also prove that if the coefficients of a univariate D-finite power series `look like' the coefficients of a rational function then the power series is rational. Our work relies on the theory of Weil heights, the Manin-Mumford …
In previous work, the first author, Ghioca, and the third author introduced a broad dynamical framework giving rise to many classical sequences from number theory and algebraic combinatorics. Specifically, these are sequences of the form $f(Φ^n(x))$, where $Φ\colon X\to X$ and $f\colon X\to\mathbb{P}^1$ are rational maps defined over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ and $x\in X(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})$ is a point whose forward orbit avoids the indeterminacy loci of $Φ$ and $f$. They conjectured that if the sequence is infinite, then $\limsup \frac{h(f(Φ^n(x)))}{\log n} > 0$. They also made a correspondi…
We construct height functions defined stochastically on projective varieties equipped with endomorphisms, and we prove that these functions satisfy analogs of the usual properties of canonical heights. Moreover, we give a dynamical interpretation of the kernel of these stochastic height functions, and in the case of the projective line, we relate the size of this kernel to the Julia sets of the original maps. Finally, as an application, we establish the finiteness of some generalized Zsigmondy sets over global fields.
We define the height of a motive over a number field. We show that if we assume the finiteness of motives of bounded height, Tate conjecture for the $p$-adic Tate module can be proved for motives with good reduction at $p$.
We discuss and relate finiteness conditions for certain field invariants which are studied in quadratic form theory. This includes the $u$-invariant, the reduced stability index and the symbol lengths for Galois cohomology groups with coefficients in $μ_2=\{+1,-1\}$, as well as a new invariant called the splitting height.
We continue with our study of the non-critical exceptional zeros of Katz' $p$-adic $L$-functions attached to a CM field $K$, following two threads. In the first thread, we redefine our (group-ring-valued) $\mathcal{L}$-invariant associated to each $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-extension $K_Γ$ of $K$ in terms of $p$-adic height pairings and interpolate them as $K_Γ$ varies to a universal (multivariate) group-ring-valued $\mathcal{L}$-invariant. In the second thread, we use our results to study the exceptional zeros of the non-genuine Rankin--Selberg $p$-adic $L$-functions attached to the self-products of ne…
Given a family of abelian varieties over a quasiprojective smooth curve $T^0$ over a global field and a point $P$ on the generic fiber, we show that the Néron-Tate canonical height $h_{X_t}(P_t)$ of $P_t$ along each fiber is exactly equal to a Weil height $h_{\overline M}(t)$ given by an adelic metrized line bundle $\overline M$ on the unique smooth projective curve $T$ containing $T^0$. As a consequence, we show that a conjecture of Zhang on the finiteness of small-height specializations of $P$ is equivalent to $\overline M$ being big.
We define an "ample canonical height" for an endomorphism on a projective variety, which is essentially a generalization of the canonical heights for polarized endomorphisms introduced by Call--Silverman. We formulate a dynamical analogue of the Northcott finiteness theorem for ample canonical heights as a conjecture, and prove it for endomorphisms on varieties of small Picard numbers, abelian varieties, and surfaces. As applications, for the endomorphisms which satisfy the conjecture, we show the non-density of the set of preperiodic points over a fixed number field, and obtain a dynamical Mo…
The asymptotic behaviour of the Neron-Tate height of Heegner points on a rational elliptic curve attached to an arithmetically normalized new cusp form f of weight 2, level N and trivial character is studied in this paper. By Gross-Zagier formula, this height is related to the special value at the critical point for the derivative of the Rankin-Selberg convolution of f with a certain weight one theta series attached to some ideal class of some imaginary quadratic field. Asymptotic formula for the first moments asociated to these Dirichlet series are proved and experimental results are carefull…
Let $f: \mathbb{A}^2 \to \mathbb{A}^2$ be a polynomial automorphism of dynamical degree $δ\geq 2$ over a number field $K$. (This is equivalent to say that $f$ is a polynomial automorphism that is not triangularizable.) Then we construct canonical height functions defined on $\mathbb{A}^2(\bar{K})$ associated with $f$. These functions satisfy the Northcott finiteness property, and an $\bar{K}$-valued point on $\mathbb{A}^2(\bar{K})$ is $f$-periodic if and only if its height is zero. As an application of canonical height functions, we give an estimate on the number of points with bounded height …
We give a new proof of Howard's $Λ$-adic Gross-Zagier formula, which we extend to the context of indefinite Shimura curves over $\mathbf{Q}$ attached to nonsplit quaternion algebras. This formula relates the cyclotomic derivative of a two-variable $p$-adic $L$-function restricted to the anticyclotomic line to the cyclotomic $p$-adic heights of Heegner points over the anticyclotomic tower, and our proof, rather than inspired by the original approaches of Gross-Zagier and Perrin-Riou, is via Iwasawa theory, based on the connection between Heegner points, Beilinson-Flach elements, and their expli…
Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field K, and consider the canonical height function attached to a symmetric ample line bundle L on A. We prove that there is a positive lower bound C (depending on A, K, and L) for the canonical height of non-torsion points on A defined over the maximal abelian extension K^ab of K.
If E is an elliptic curve defined over a number field and p is a prime of good ordinary reduction for E, a theorem of Rubin relates the p-adic height pairing on the p-power Selmer group of E to the first derivative of a cohomologically defined p-adic L-function attached to E. Bertolini and Darmon have defined a sequence of "derived" p-adic heights. In this paper we give an alternative definition of the p-adic height pairing and prove a generalization of Rubin's result, relating the derived heights to higher derivatives of p-adic L-functions. We also relate degeneracies in the derived heights t…
We establish the finiteness of periodic points, that we called Geometric Dynamical Northcott Property, for regular polynomials automorphisms of the affine plane over a function field $\mathbf{K}$ of characteristic zero, improving results of Ingram. For that, we show that when $\mathbf{K}$ is the field of rational functions of a smooth complex projective curve, the canonical height of a subvariety is the mass of an appropriate bifurcation current and that a marked point is stable if and only if its canonical height is zero. We then establish the Geometric Dynamical Northcott Property using a si…
Let f: A^N \to A^N be a regular polynomial automorphism defined over a number field K. For each place v of K, we construct the v-adic Green functions G_{f,v} and G_{f^{-1},v} (i.e., the v-adic canonical height functions) for f and f^{-1}. Next we introduce for f the notion of good reduction at v, and using this notion, we show that the sum of v-adic Green functions over all v gives rise to a canonical height function for f that satisfies the Northcott-type finiteness property. Using previous results, we recover results on arithmetic properties of f-periodic points and non f-periodic points. We…
Runge's method is a tool to figure out integral points on curves effectively in terms of height. This method has been generalised to varieties of any dimension, unfortunately its conditions of application are often too restrictive. In this paper, we provide a further generalisation intended to be more flexible while still effective, and exemplify its applicability by giving finiteness results for integral points on some Siegel modular varieties. As a special case, we obtain a totally explicit finiteness result for integral points on the Siegel modular variety $A_2(2)$.
Let X be a projective integral normal scheme over a number field F; let L be a ample line bundle on X together with a semi-positive adelic metric in the sense of Zhang. The main results of this article are 1) A formula which computes the height (relative to L) of a Cartier divisor D on X as generalized "Mahler measures", i.e. by integrating Green functions for D against measures attached to L. 2) a theorem of equidistribution of points of "small" height valid for functions with logarithmic singularities along a divisor D, provided the height of D is "minimal". In the context of algebraic dynam…
We give a formula for the values of automorphic Green functions on the special rational 0-cycles (big CM points) attached to certain maximal tori in the Shimura varieties associated to rational quadratic spaces of signature (2d,2). Our approach depends on the fact that the Green functions in question are constructed as regularized theta lifts of harmonic weak Mass forms, and it involves the Siegel-Weil formula and the central derivatives of incoherent Eisenstein series for totally real fields. In the case of a weakly holomorphic form, the formula is an explicit combination of quantities obtain…
Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 that is complete with respect to a non-archimedean absolute value. We establish a locally uniform approximation formula of the Lyapunov exponent of a rational map $f$ of $\mathbb{P}^1$ of degree $d>1$ over $K$, in terms of the multipliers of $n$-periodic points of $f$, with an explicit control in terms of $n$, $f$ and $K$. As an immediate consequence, we obtain an estimate for the blow-up of the Lyapunov exponent near a pole in one-dimensional families of rational maps over $K$. Combined with our former archimedean version, this non-…
Let $A$ be an $n \times n$ matrix with rational entries and let \[ \mathbb{Z}^n[A] := \bigcup_{k=1}^{\infty} \left( \mathbb{Z}^n + A\mathbb{Z}^n + \dots + A^{k-1}\mathbb{Z}^n\right) \] be the minimal $A$-invariant $\mathbb{Z}$-module containing the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^n$. If $\mathcal{D}\subset\mathbb{Z}^n[A]$ is a finite set we call the pair $(A,\mathcal{D})$ a digit system. We say that $(A,\mathcal{D})$ has the finiteness property if each $\mathbf{z} \in \mathbb{Z}^n[A]$ can be written in the form \[ \mathbf{z} = \mathbf{d}_0 + A\mathbf{d}_1 + \dots + A^k\mathbf{d}_k, \] with $k\in\mathbb{N}…
We generalize the explicit quadratic Chabauty techniques for integral points on odd degree hyperelliptic curves and for rational points on genus 2 bielliptic curves to arbitrary number fields using restriction of scalars. This is achieved by combining equations coming from Siksek's extension of classical Chabauty with equations defined in terms of p-adic heights attached to independent continuous idele class characters. We give several examples to show the practicality of our methods.
For $E/K$ an elliptic curve without complex multiplication we bound the index of the image of $\operatorname{Gal}(\bar{K}/K)$ in $\operatorname{GL}_2(\hat{\mathbb{Z}})$, the representation being given by the action on the Tate modules of $E$ at the various primes. The bound is effective and only depends on $[K:\mathbb{Q}]$ and on the stable Faltings height of $E$. We also prove a result relating the structure of subgroups of $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z}_\ell)$ to certain Lie algebras naturally attached to them.
The Bogomolov Conjecture is a finiteness statement about algebraic points of small height on a smooth complete curve defined over a global field. We verify an effective form of the Bogomolov Conjecture for all curves of genus at most 4 defined over a function field of characteristic zero. We recover the known result for genus 2 curves and in many cases improve upon the known bound for genus 3 curves. For many curves of genus 4 with bad reduction, the conjecture was previously unproved.
This is a book about computational aspects of modular forms and the Galois representations attached to them. The main result is the following: Galois representations over finite fields attached to modular forms of level one can, in almost all cases, be computed in polynomial time in the weight and the size of the finite field. As a consequence, coefficients of modular forms can be computed fast via congruences, as in Schoof's algorithm for the number of points of elliptic curves over finite fields. The most important feature of the proof of the main result is that exact computations involving …
Let $A/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve with split multiplicative reduction at a prime $p$. We prove (an analogue of) a conjecture of Perrin-Riou, relating $p$-adic Beilinson$-$Kato elements to Heegner points in $A(\mathbb{Q})$, and a large part of the rank-one case of the Mazur$-$Tate$-$Teitelbaum exceptional zero conjecture for the cyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-function of $A$. More generally, let $f$ be the weight-two newform associated with $A$, let $f_{\infty}$ be the Hida family of $f$, and let $L_{p}(f_{\infty},k,s)$ be the Mazur$-$Kitagawa two-variable $p$-adic $L$-function attached to $f_{\…
We shall consider sections of an elliptic scheme $\mathcal{E}$ over a(n affine) base curve $B$, and study the points of $B$ where the section takes a torsion value. In particular, we shall relate the distribution in $B$ of these points with the canonical height of the section, proving an integral formula involving a measure on $B$ coming from the so-called Betti map of the section. We shall show that this measure is the same appearing in dynamical issues related to the section. This analysis will also involve the multiplicity with which a torsion value is attained, which is an independent prob…
